Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionThe fact that the protests lack a guiding hand, or any discernible leadership, not to mention any defined goals aside from vague slogans calling for "change to the system in Lebanon," is making it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's also safe to assume that the bitterness, frustrations and anger harbored by the youth for politics and politicians, the same cohort of corrupt hedonists who have brought Lebanon to the precipice of economic ruin, will continue fuelling the protests.Simon Bolívar said it best when he described the struggle for freedom in South America... He Who Serves a Revolution Plows the SeaHe despaired of what he saw as the immutable character of the people, and I wonder whether that applies to the Arab world as well. In fact, Western political philosophy relies on a mindset that is rare, and getting rarer. Every idiot Millennial who waxes poetic about a socialist paradise, and every politician who chips away at free speech, and every soccer mom who embraces socialist policies because "it's for the children," erodes the 2,500 year-old bedrock of freedom and liberty and self determination. Are we becoming like the rest of the world? America was blissfully free of the sort of violent but pointless protest that much of the world favors. Sure, we have had our share, but for the most part, when Americans protested we had some sort of concrete goal in mind. But that seems to be changing, and the free-floating aggression that we see in most of the world has been embraced by the current crop of violent protesters. But what are they protesting? "We don't like the status quo?" Sounds rather 3rd-worldish to me. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Among the more naive notions put forward by our last Republican President is the notion that everyone, universally, yearns for "freedom". That may (and I'm being kind here) be true on some level, but the first problem with this notion is that nobody seems to be able to agree on what "freedom" actually is. The other problem, as a practical matter, is that if you believe in this "universal" "yearning", AND you perceive that you're in a position to "help", well you end up with the Iraq War.
Humanity's experiment (and that's precisely what it is) with "freedom" is a principally if not uniquely Western enlightenment phenomenon that, from the looks of the West these days, is coming to an end. Actually, there is a defined goal - to get rid of the inbred families in Lebanon that pass on high political office to their family members as inheritances from generation to generation. It's even worse than Illinois. Narsallah (the head of Hezbollah) does not like this, because all the inbred political families serve as political cover for the fact that Hezbollah has turned Lebanon into an Iranian colony. Heck, we still give military aid to the Lebanese army, pretending that Lebanon and Hezbollah are somehow different. So, Hezbollah has started beating demonstrators - they like the current political system just fine, and don't want it changed. Posted by: The ARC of History! at October 29, 2019 11:13 AM (I2/tG) 58

2019 is looking a lot like 1848 or 1968.
unz.com/pbuchanan/is-trump-facing-a-1960s-style-revolt/ The argument here is that we have a baby-boom across the world, grown up disillusioned by normal politics as young people usually are. Here "normal politics" means Trump, and the standard Republocrat line about a modest social-network with capitalism... for the rich, old, and/or white. Capitalism does nothing for those without capital, like youngsters born to low-to-middle class parents and to immigrants. That Trump and the Republocrats aren't the same thing doesn't matter to them. In the Near East, "normal politics" means fascism with an Islamic facade, against ISIS. The youth in the Near East hate both. In 1848 the reactionary governments (or neoreactionaries like Napoleon III) successfully squashed the revolts. In 1968, America capitulated and handed over its universities to the Left. I'm not taking sides on what Trump or others of the good guys should do. I'm just sketching out what we're in for. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at October 29, 2019 11:15 AM (ykYG2) 68

Posted by: Cheriebebe at October 29, 2019 11:08 AM (KA5Fy) Tucker had a segment the other night in which he proposed that the embrace of socialism by so many of today's young adults is a result of demanding that HS grads MUST attend college and then end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, often for degrees in which they cannot find a job, or the job pays 1/10th of what they need to pay it back. They blame it on capitalism, because the college is the one making huge amounts of money on them, and in exchange get nothing in return. So they believe capitalism must be replaced by a fairer system. Sorry Tucker, how about placing the blame where it belongs, on the parents of said people who paraded their kids to schools of outrageous expense because they wanted to brag about their kid's degree from super special U of $$. English Speaking peoples, due to their unique history and unique cultural development, blending many different sources, had created an absolutely unique culture that favors Liberty. They rubbed off a bit on Continental Europe, but even Europe has always been far more authoritarian. I wouldn't say that Arab culture "wants" authoritarian rule as much as they "need" it. The Franco-German Rhineland (Charlemagne's base) didn't evolve democracy as such, but it developed a system of mostly-peaceful feudalism 800-1200 AD. They hashed out their differences at tournament. The real nasty happened over at France with the 100 Years War, and in Germany. The Hajnal Line is a knock-on from that. The Rhineland, Benelux, northern Italy, and northern France is prosperous. a profound difference between the West (or at least some of us) and the Arab/Muslim world
I read an article by a F-15 instructor pilot who had trained both Israelis and Saudis. If an Israeli washes out of F-15 training, he washes out - it doesn't matter if he is the nephew of the Prime Minister, or the son of a powerful businessman. Israel is acutely aware that a large chunk of its security is based on the quality of a few hundred fighter pilots, so they don't let other considerations affect who gets to be a fighter pilot. But in Saudi, if you want to wash a pilot out of the F-15 program, you have to worry about what tribe the pilot belongs to, whether the tribe can be compensated if you wash a tribal member out of the F-15 program, and a lot of other considerations that have nothing to do with the quality of the pilot. Guess which country has the better fighter pilots? Posted by: The ARC of History! at October 29, 2019 11:22 AM (I2/tG) 102

The argument here is that we have a baby-boom across the world, grown up
disillusioned by normal politics as young people usually are. Any baby boom is pretty much limited to Africa and the Muslim world now, and even the Muzzie birth rate is falling dramatically. Obviously the people rioting and breaking things now were born before rates plunged, but at least that's hopeful for the future. Africa is really a special case. Charles Murray was on Hoover Institute regarding his book "Coming Apart" ... good video. He says the founders agreed that the US constitution was designed for a Christian public ... it was not just one founder's statement, they pretty much all agreed on that. "A republic, if you can keep it" requires a diligent public united in culture. Neighborhoods looked out for each other's kids, richer class mingled and married with poorer class. (looking mostly at whites, to not become confused with other issues)
As we see now, Hillary isolated the deplorables from the elitist coastals ... and indeed, the cocktail party does consider themselves the entitled ruling class, especially the inside beltway special ones that are above the law. Once we move into mutli-culti diversity as a priority in hiring and even in law, or in opening borders ... all is lost. Or at least that is the eventual road to ruin. And at the beginning, responsible land owners were voting ... not masses voting for free stuff, and foreign masses invading for infinite welfare. youtube.com/watch?v=6q3zy4NRzz4 Posted by: illiniwek at October 29, 2019 11:29 AM (Cus5s) 127

The lesson I've drawn from the past nearly 20 years of wars is that the concept of the "nation-state" is a Western invention.
Expecting traditionally tribal societies, which most of the Arab world is, to adapt to that model is forcing a square peg through a round hole. It only really works with an authoritarian central government. The best you can really hope for from an Arab country is an authoritarian leader who is fairly benign and pro-Western, such as the Jordanian royals. I can kind of see why bringing democracy to the Middle East seemed like a good idea circa 2003, but if you still think it's a good idea today, then you are no different from the people who claim that "real socialism hasn't been tried yet." Tucker had a segment the other night in which he proposed that the embrace of socialism by so many of today's young adults is a result of demanding that HS grads MUST attend college and then end up with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, often for degrees in which they cannot find a job, or the job pays 1/10th of what they need to pay it back. America was a great Darwinian experiment in genetics.
We opened up the country to those who were self reliant, and wanted freedom. We GAVE away land in the West. Those who could not make it either dies, or went back home (there were whole groups of people who headed back East). And it was the culture of the people who stayed, who made the fabric of America, which due to those attitudes, became a great Nation. We have diluted that DNA whoever. Now most are reliant on the State, and we see it in the voting patterns, where they vote Safety of Freedom. Add in that we no longer teach that those America attitudes are superior, or even GOOD? (hell, the denigrate those attitudes in school at every opportunity). We had a good run, but without a return to American values? we're done. Posted by: Don Q at October 29, 2019 11:35 AM (NgKpN) 158

Also, remember that this is the story of one of the Antifa dudes who fired a handgun at the SUV - he naturally has an interest in claiming he was firing in self-defense. I recently did a proper study of Islam to make my own judgment and form my own opinion about it. The whole thing is rooted in authoritarianism and fear. The entire religion is based on because allah said so.
In Christianity we are free to ask questions about God. In Islam the answer is that you don't question allah. He will question you on your judgment day and if you have any questions of your own give it a shot then and see what it does for you and you bet your ass it won't be nice. It was all very eye opening, creepy and weird. I get that culture now better than ever. Posted by: ... at October 29, 2019 11:41 AM (/28Sz) 198
126,
The U.S. Constitution was designed for a republic and the idea of homogeneity of the populace was an old one which you can see in Montesquieu, Rousseau, etc. and even further back dating to the Reformation as even monarchs preferred to have all one religion versus a mixed population. Madison argued in No. 10 that a federal republic could encompass broader diversity but that only works if most decisions are made the state and local level rather than national. Where Madison goes wrong is that losers at the local and state level inevitably hookup with others across the U.S. and nationalize the issue--e.g. trans bathrooms for example. The wading of the U.S. courts to nationalize social situations has made things much worse. Madison's ideas work on economics but not so much on differing social ideals about what is a desirable society. These often have quasi-religious symbolisms to separate believers and non-believers and then the believers demand an inquisition to burn and punish the heretics. We haven't really changed all that much from history because of the idiotic concept that this time things will be different and appear destined to repeat some of the less desirable mistakes. The more prosperous we become the more pissed off a significant portion of the electorate becomes.
Some are highly educated. And the common thread is that they believe that the system is rigged. The trouble is is that they are correct just not quite the way they believe. It's rigged when Martha Stewart goes to jail but Hillary doesn't face charges. It's rigged when Epstein serves his time largely at home. It's rigged when Epstein is allowed to die without facing justice on the same beef he got away with before. It's rigged when an architect of terror hasn't been tried for his part in the murder of thousands for EIGHTEEN years. And it's rigged when you see DNA free framed convicts. But it is America and we have the ability to correct...to change...and to unrig things. We just need to roll back the intrusive state and let the economy hum with everyone enjoying low energy prices. Burn coal and oil. Build windmills. Build nukes...get energy cheaper. Don't allow Failfornia to control their energy prices. Use the Commerce Clause to the hilt. Early morning rant off. The power went out again this morning. Won't be back until late Wednesday or early Thursday. They promise TEN YEARS of this nonsense. I'm pissed. Sorry about that. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. at October 29, 2019 11:29 AM (d6Ksn) Exactly. A lot of endowment money is from rich donors, usually alums. Educational institutions are 501 non profits, although some are for profit schools. I don't know how, other than by changing tax code, you require a school to give refunds basically to former students. I don't know how you fix this. The politicians that claim they are going to make college free, or the government is going to cancel student debt( since most loans are now guaranteed by the federal government- Obama's takeover of school loans) seems like a more likely scenario than forcing colleges to pay back loans. And those politicians are going to be popular. That entire takeover was a setup for free college/indoctrination for all by the Dems to keep under 35 year olds voting for them. Politicians will say and do anything for votes, particularly the Dems. Right now, a bunch of idiot state and federal congress people are submitting bills to their respective legislature to force the NCAA to allow student athletes to be able to attract and accept endorsement money while in school. Which will essentially allow the better athletes to be owned by whatever syndicate, or big corporation or even Joe the Mattress Store owner to pay them to attend said advertiser's school of choice. They are hell bent of doing this, given courage by Gavin Newsome's stupid bill in CA. Government screws up everything. Posted by: Jen the original at October 29, 2019 11:41 AM (96m0f) 205

Culture is learned in childhood from those people that the child interacts with. It is emotion based and is hard to change once adulthood is reached. Religion, in this respect, is cultural.
The Left resembles a religion since they work at influencing people through the same cultural-emotional mechanisms. This is why the power obtained by the Left here has risen most since they took control of the education and entertainment systems. It is through these that a Left culture is being/has been implanted into young people. Put them into a group environment with carrot and stick based on what responses are deemed good and bad by the leaders and they will, over time, have those responses become automatic and not questioned. This means is wired into humans as a way to have groups (tribes) work together which in tribal times meant survival of the tribe. The chanted slogans, the SJW attacks, are part of both implanting the culture, reinforcing the implant, and signaling to all in the group what is "right" and "wrong." Think of Hatfields and McCoys feuding as an example.
People sick of the feuding then support a strong ruler, if not a total despot, to simply try to quash the side-effects on public order from tribal feuding. This works until the tribes have all been alienated by the harsh treatment and then combine to throw out the despot. Rinse and repeat. Posted by: whig at October 29, 2019 11:49 AM (MItID) 250

Carlson says that any presidential candidate who figures that out and puts the blame where it should go will win the election.
Actually doing anything about it would be another thing altogether. I can see leftist judges (all products of elite universities) siding with the administrators. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. at October 29, 2019 11:29 AM (d6Ksn) ----------------- The SCOAMF took over the student loan industry with the intention of having a future (D) preezy cancel all student loan debt, ensuring a permanent Democrat majority for the foreseeable future. Cankles' shocking incompetence as a Presidential candidate and the election of Donald J Trump PBUH is the only thing that saved this country from this and many other horrible outcomes.
It's rigged when Epstein didn't kill himself. Yeah, well this only description of the exchange so far is via the lawyer of the Antifa guy who did the shooting. His firearm is legal, per his lawyer, but I did wonder if that was one reason they initially refused to cooperate w/police.
It's interesting that the lawyer publicized this story now. One suspects that the Portland police are about to make some arrests and explain what happened, and the lawyer was trying to get out in front of that. In particular, the guy's story hinges on the claim that the SUV hit his friend, hit Democratic headquarters, started trying to reverse, at which point he opened fire. The police may indicate that the gunfire preceded the ramming. Trying to argue that you fired into a SUV filled with people in self-defense may be tricky. they initially refused to cooperate w/police I believe that the two Antifa guys are continuing to refuse to cooperate with police. Nothing in the lawyer's statement indicates that they are. Posted by: The ARC of History! at October 29, 2019 11:56 AM (I2/tG) 285

I do think that the American experiment, including our Revolution, was extremely rare and possibly the result of a specific point in time where ideas of individual freedom, both in political philosophy and in religion *at the same time* were ascendant.
I think that even in Europe that revolution almost always ends in authoritarianism so it would be wrong to say that this group of people have different inherent characters than that group of people. A certain conformity makes life work smoothly, but it's near impossible to keep that truth from turning into "if only I can make those people behave properly, we'll all be happy." most individuals follow but prefer to move up the ladder. The US started with a structure to reward the ambitious and innovative and brave. The New Deal, Square Deal, LBJs Great Society ... then the diversity baloney leading to identity politics craziness.
imo the biggest change that lead America astray was the Soviet infiltration, funded from the outside, malicious insiders sold us out, and the institutions the conquered are now a powerful and corrupt monster, punishing the non-compliant, destroying our heritage. Commies conquered our skools. The masses fell asleep I suppose, but our leadership led the way down the commie path, and then perhaps the control by banking interests got out of hand in the mid 80s as corporate America went globalist. I joined the mutual fund road to riches starting in about 1982, and around 1999 observed the market corruption in the easy money manipulation of currency -- that was heading toward the infinite debt path we are now on. ... tick tock ... how many more trillions can they fleece from US? ... Reminds me of the story in the Old Testament when the Jewish people demand God appoint a king over them. He warns them of everything a king will demand of them and do, the point being living as a moral people under God's law makes a king irrelevant. They still demanded a king. They got a series of kings-- many of them corrupt or inept. I have combed the internet and talked with family and friends looking for a solution to my neighbor's loud bass and can't find any solutions. I'm very concerned about my husband's well being. I thought I'd come out of lurkdom to ask the intelligent crowd here if there are any ideas.
A month ago our neighbors woke us up at 1am with loud bass music. This has been going on for about 9 months. I never got a chance to call the police, for the 8th time, because my husband started grabbing his left side of his chest. Rushed him to the ER. He had a heart attack and had another while waiting on blood test results to come back to confirm whether had had one or not. Granted, he had blockages, stents put in and he's ok. But his main culprit to the problem is high blood pressure which his previous doctor did a piss poor job of helping him to control. We did diet, exercise, etc... but his bp was hard to control. New doctor now and blood pressure is still slightly high but nothing like it was. One of the top causes of high bp is getting upset. But for quite some time, we've been dealing with awfully loud neighbors. We moved away from a loud business that we could do nothing really about to now what seemed like a quieter neighborhood. But the guys across the street like to drink and get louder as they drink. Law has been called a number of times. I called over the weekend about the same thing. I told dispatch I want to speak to an officer because this has officially became very unhealthy for my husband. I waited outside. A county pd rolled by their place and mine really slow while the bass was really loud... but he kept going and no one paid me a visit at all. The next day they were booming again. This time my husband called and told dispatch they turn it up and turn it down alternately today. She said they would send a unit out. After 15 mins they turned it off completely and it stayed that way so hubby called them back and told dispatch. He feels the police have better things to do than show up where a problem has stopped. Plus, if the cops don't hear it, there's nothing they can do. Dispatch asked did he want to speak to an officer anyway. He said there's no point, he's called several times about the same people. We've talked to officers twice but it keeps happening. She asked him again and hubby said he'd think about it. Now, a neighbor down the road who did this earlier this year pushed things with his bass and an officer cited him a hefty fine. But these guys across the street must be special or something because absolutely nothing happens to these guys. One night when the cops showed up they couldn't get them to open the door no matter how hard they knocked. The music was blaring away as they tried. Every time the cops show up, these guys run off in the woods. That night they wouldn't come out of the house. Moving is not an option for a while. I'm having to work 3rd shift because we have extra medical bills to pay now and I really worry about husband being at home alone at night if it happens again. We've tried noise cancelling stuff, try to drown out the bass with noise through a subwoofer and all. Apparently it doesn't bother other people in the neighborhood because they don't live across from them and hear it like we do. I even talked to a guy who doesn't live there but claims he owns the place and explained to him my husband's health. He seemed confused, did not speak english well, but I finally got him to understand it's the bass, not the music, just tell them to keep the bass down and we have no problems. I even told him about my husband's health. This was recently. But the next day those guys were at it again. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them and if you're a praying person, prayers would be greatly appreciated too. It's not a distant thump you can hear indoors. It's a noise you can FEEL coming through the walls and overcomes the low frequency white noise we run through our subwoofer. And they're about 70 - 75 feet away. Yeah its one of the foundational principles of Christianity (and Judaism, for that matter) that you are not just able to, but strongly encouraged to debate, discuss, question, and study. "he explicitly acknowledge they are pagan fertility
symbols, something he tried to gloss over in past statements, he now says the dredged up statues (from where observant Catholics had thrown them into the Tiber) will be displayed at an upcoming Mass." good for the observant Catholic, but imo the Bible student should ask a lot of questions about their Christian heritage, and they should separate the traditions adopted from pagans but "Christianized" over the centuries. While most church goers are good people, they have been led into non-Christian tradition ... often in contradiction to scripture. Steeples are phallic ... bells to wake the gods ... the list is long. "The Church" itself, is nice as a building, but we moved to a spiritual body (ekklesia, often translated as "church") of Christ, with JC (or CJ actually) as our high priest forever. The true church is composed of all Christians ... regardless of whether they belong to any certain denomination or not. The Catholic denomination has been infiltrated, it would seem. Many "observant Catholics" seem to recognize this ... good for them. Posted by: illiniwek at October 29, 2019 12:17 PM (Cus5s) 356
10 a profound difference between the West (or at least some of us) and the Arab/Muslim world."
The key is in the opening statement - we're trying to foist a nation/state on tribal/ethnic alliances. Ain't gonna work. Posted by: Anon a mouse at October 29, 2019 11:04 AM (6qErC) ++++++++++++++ The only way it can possibly work is to attempt to place the state lines to approximate the tribal lines where they have traditionally been. Yes there will always be skirmishes along the border, this is to be expected as it has been this way for millennia, however there will be relative stability because each tribe will have its own space. Forcing Sunnis and Shiites to live together is like forcing oil and water to mix - it aint going to be stable for long. Posted by: Death to Rinos at October 29, 2019 12:18 PM (JNTt1) 357

Long observation of history leads me to believe that the natural human social model is "good czar/bad czar."
This is from the old Russian saying that the best form of government is a good czar, and the worst one a bad czar. Shame there are so few good czars. Middle Eastern governments, with one notable exception, fall into this category. That said, we see old photos of Afghanistan and Iran with women with uncovered heads and high heels. The states may have been authoritarian, but Islamism didn't always run the show either. Posted by: MW at October 29, 2019 12:22 PM (p6nh9) 361

8 The Iraq war taught me that most do not want freedom. Freedom is like weather, it doesn't last. What people really want is to be ruled by someone from their own tribe. A Zimbabwean king for Zimbabwe. A gay socialist for San Francisco.

We moved out into the country once. Rented a large place. Plenty of room around. Nothing but cows and horses around. Neighbor put in 6 chicken houses near us and ran them very poorly. He also liked to stand near our property and shoot guns for hours on weekends so he wouldn't bother his elderly neighbor on the other side of him. But at this point, I find I really miss that place. Lol. You just never know, ya know? The plan is to save up enough money to buy land and build a soundproof home. I'm amazed they haven't been cited yet. It's a 1500.00 fine. The guy down the road was cited for the same. Posted by: Janie Lee at October 29, 2019 12:30 PM (pIoAY) 364

The purpose of the protests/riots is never about freedom. It's about overthrowing the current people in power so that the leaders of the protests/riots become the new people in power. That's the only way power changes hands in places that aren't democratic republics. That's how it's been since forever before upstart white men in 13 British Colonies decided to try something different. Of course, they needed to protest/riot to get into power first.

For a long time I've thought about this general idea and have been saying for a while that either some cultures simply aren't predisposed toward freedom (in our ideal sense) or they simply don't know any different.I'm firmly in the middle of Gen-X so I have grown up with anti-soviet propaganda (errant or not), for good or ill. I say that to say what I think I know about Russian history shows that the Russians, unfortunately, went from a monarchical tyranny to a communist tyranny as the west was well into figuring out the modern/industrial era.70 years later they were left with nobody in charge after having way too many in charge. Such power vacuums typically allow for a new ruler that's the toughest SOB who beat the others...with the best or worst intentions.Despite whatever was happening in Britain in terms of monarchical overreach, they at least were experimenting with degrees of self rule. And frankly, I think these are big city problems. If you get far enough out there, anywhere, you'll find self-rule as things are taken care of locally.

John Derbyshire once observed that only about 5% of the human lives ever lived were under consensual forms of self-government, and that such a framework of God-given natural rights was the product of ONLY white Anglo-Saxon culture (not even including whites not in that category--Slavs, Mediterranean types, et al.) So let us admit that most of humanity is genetically-disposed to serfdom, and proceed from there.
