Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | LA Times "Movie" Critic: Terminator Dark Fate is Great Because There's Gender and Race Parity and They Speak Spanish and Because The Movie Hates Trump's Immigration PolicyThis piece of shit, despite all the pandering to #Woke feminist/pro-trans movie critics, is just barley above the 65% "fresh" line on Rotten Tomatoes. How low would it be if movie reviewers actually reviewed movies, rather than just reporting whether or not a movie flatters your pre-conceived political biases? Look at this positive review from this joker at the LA Times:Wammen are (fierce fingersnaps) more than their genitals! Except when feminists want to be nothing but their genitals. Don't try to understand it, Oppressor. In time, the action shifts to a train carrying Mexican sojourners toward the border with Texas, with a crucial stopover at a detention center where Grace pointedly identifies her fellow detainees as "prisoners" -- and then does precisely what a hero would do in that particular situation. I don't mean to oversell the political subversiveness of "Terminator: Dark Fate," whose real-world reference points are nothing if not calculated -- which doesn't, of course, make them any less meaningful or sincere. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to revitalize a dead intellectual property. Sometimes all it takes is a movie in which "Hasta la vista, baby" isn't the extent of the characters' Spanish. We're now saying "all it takes" to give a movie a positive rating is to have an actress speak Spanish?!? Wow. That's pretty much admitting the game right there, isn't it? So the Xerminator, also known as LGBT-1000, is exactly what you thought it was -- #Woke crap produced for an audience that doesn't like science fiction or action, but hates the idea that heterosexual men are enjoying something that they're "excluded" from. I imagine this review is based more on the actual movie than on virtue signalling to #Woke Twitter NPCs: Despite being the sixth installment of a franchise that hasn't really been relevant since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tim Miller's competent but coma-inducing "Terminator: Dark Fate" has no reason to feel this far past its expiration date. In a studio age of intellectual property where nostalgia and innovation are tugging us so hard in either direction that it doesn't seem to matter what happens right here, nothing this side of a "live-action" Disney remake could possibly be more "now" than an unsolicited $150 million sequel in which the present is literally reduced to a turf war between the past and the future. And "Dark Fate" does everything in its power to embrace the 2019 of it all; from its self-congratulatory emphasis on strong female characters and (far more graceful) focus on people of color, to its pandering fan service and soul-numbing parade of weightless special effects, this isn't just another mega-budget "requel" that nobody asked for, it's all of them. And even though it's overall very negative, that review still has to give Dark Fate #Woke points for Hispanic Reparations. Below, a couple of vids. First, Dave Cullen points out some curious repeated language from the #Woke critics trying to give this newest #Woke bomb a push, and then, Critical Drinker's old but still funny reviews of this plop's trailers. What is infuriating about this is that Sarah Connor, at least in the first two Terminator movies, is a legit badass.
In the first movie, she is wildly unprepared for the situation in which she is thrust but through sheer stubbornness pulls through. The not really a joke about T2 is that the best special effect in the movie is Linda Hamilton's biceps. T2 shows the effort, and the brutal costs, to turning herself into the weapon she believes she needs to be. Sarah Connor was *already* one of the strongest female characters in sci-fi. This? This spits in the face of all of that. It is utterly maddening. Posted by: alexthechick - Ragebunny. Hopping all around. at October 24, 2019 04:14 PM (GbPPJ) 28

"Hispanic Reparations." Wait, I'm confused. The descendants of the Conquistadors need reparations now? Weren't they the ones committing the genocide? About 70% of Hispanics are "mestizos" -- i.e. "mixed" descendants of both the conquerors (the European Conquistadors) and their rape victims, the conquered (central American tribes like Toltecs and Aztecs). They're oppressor and victims simultaneously. And of the remaining 30% (in Mexico, at least), approximately half are 100% Connquistador and the other half are 100% "Indio" (what we would call "Native American"). The very concept of "reparations" in Hispanic North America is an impossibility. Posted by: zombie at October 24, 2019 04:18 PM (PsL+s) 53

Oh yes, those poor "Mexican sojourners" at the detention center. Cry me a f--king river.
Read Gail Heriot's dissenting opinion to the so-called Civil Rights Commission that was railing about the horrible conditions in the detention centers -- without ever visiting one of the detention centers before writing this shit. Heriot actually went to one of the centers, and she interviewed some detainees. Turns out that they were being treated so well that some of them said they'd be willing to stay there permanently. They had game rooms, and video rooms, and class rooms, and three hot meals a day. There were "free" (as in, paid for by stupid U.S. taxpayers) dental and medical clinics where they could stop in to get their teeth or whatever fixed (bet some poor Americans would like to have that luxury). There was also a room where they could go to get new clothes. They get to choose six outfits for themselves, brand new, and again, all paid for courtesy of U.S. taxpayers. But these poor, poor foreign "sojourners," on whom U.S. taxpayers are spending billions of dollars every year, providing for their every need so that they can then leave the detention centers (after their "free" lawyers have gotten them refugee status) and sign up for food stamps and welfare and Medicaid and all the other "free" shit that American taxpayers are paying out the wazoo for. Yeah, we should all feel sorry for them. Not for ourselves, and our $22 trillion in debt, and our yearly trillion-dollar deficits. We're just not doing enough for these poor mistreated migrants coming here by the millions to screw us over. When is somebody going to make a movie about the real victims: U.S. taxpayers. They're xenophiles in the sense that they choose and prefer LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE to what we had here. So, we're a white Christian nation (well, 25 years ago) with certain values. T2 is a space opera but on Earth. The only thing good about T3 was the ending and going through with blowing up the world. I agree with this analysis. Terminator 1 works so well because its so cheap, they couldn't be fancy. T2 was more what Cameron wanted to do and still works because of the amazing spectacle, but wasn't as tight and enjoyable. 3 kinda dragged until the end when it was a perfect sci fi ending. Part of the reason to make this movie at all is for the studio to try and maintain the rights.
There are legal battles going on where the people who originated characters are suing to get full control of them outside of the studio. The time around it is something like 35 years, so the 80s properties are being brought into court by the individuals who created them. Making more movies with those characters is one way the studios are trying to fight back, saying that they are actively using the properties instead of letting them languish. It's unclear how successful these suits will be, but I'm hoping for their success. Getting IP into the hands of individuals instead of corporations feels like a move in the right direction for copyright. Speaking of classics turned to crap, it boggles my mind how badly Disney screwed up Star Wars.
A sequel can be horrid, but the one thing it absolutely cannot do is spit in the face of the source material. Star Wars survived the prequels because it basically left the beloved characters untouched. Then Disney came along and said 'lol GF.' The movies still made a ton of money, but apparently the new park areas are a disaster, so hopefully Disney is feeling some negative impact from their decisions. >>>145 Part of the reason to make this movie at all is for the studio to try and maintain the rights.
There are legal battles going on where the people who originated characters are suing to get full control of them outside of the studio. The time around it is something like 35 years, so the 80s properties are being brought into court by the individuals who created them. Making more movies with those characters is one way the studios are trying to fight back, saying that they are actively using the properties instead of letting them languish. ... are you sure that has to do with whether an IP is being used? I didn't get that sense. Based on what I know about the Friday the 13th dispute, whether the IP is in current use was immaterial; the law just says that someone can reclaim their copyright after 35 years. There is something about keeping a TRADEMARK in use to show that it has not been abandoned (that is why Marvel was able to steal the unused "Captain Marvel" trademark, which was originally Shazam's actual name and trademark), and why Marvel will always keep rebooting this POS, just to keep the name. PS, the original writer of friday the 13th is in a dispute with Sean Cunningham and his prodco over who owns Jason Vorhees/the Friday the 13th name and IP.
He went through the steps to reclaim his copyright. Current rights holder says that that reclaming power doesn't apply because he was always work-for-hire, and work-for-hires don't have this right. He says he sold it to them as an independent contractor (who would have the right). Now, the killer in the first movie was actually Jason Vorhees' *mother*, not Jason Vorhees, but Jason Vorhees was *named,* so he's claiming he has the rights to that character. Jason also showed up in a dream sequence as a stinger ending but I don't know if that was in the original script or added later. Posted by: ace at October 24, 2019 04:43 PM (PbpT7) 224

Yeah but she also didn't age as well as some women do. Not that this is a knock against her, just saying she didn't have those genetics and it showed even in T2. The problem I saw with the previews to this wasn't grrl power (I mean, there's always been strong women in the franchise), it was that it looks derivative and dull. And the new super terminator looks ridiculous, very complex, but pointlessly so. Like they couldn't figure out if she was supposed to be liquid or made of machinery, so they did both. Looks like they couldn't figure out if the character was supposed to be male or female either. So they did both. Yeah. well she was legitimately the main character -- the one with an arc, the viewpoint character -- in the first movie.
She was more of a secondary character in the second. === dammit. right. Sara connor was buffetted by several forces in the first, 1. reese 2. the police 3. the terminator. she had to deal with the guidance and loss of 1 and 2 in order to overcome 3. in T2, she and arnold were there to buddy buddy with the kid as they dealt with the t1000. But the kid was the morals and brains, arnold the muscle and naive person being learned to be human, and linda was the reese of the movie, someone who had to be calmed down and deal with the terror of what might be. The first Black Widow thing in Iron Man 2. She was a spy, and had loads of weapons and gadgets that made her cool. She used her skill, and all that stuff, to win. best part of the movie. Note how during the marvel movies we got less and less of this. She just became a brawler, like the rest. A weak one, who everyone pretended was their equal. Black Widow was criminally underused. Her interrogation while being tied up, and her interrogation of Loki. That was her at her best. Any feedback/dire warnings? Posted by: vmom happy to have read a good book! at October 24, 2019 04:52 PM (G546f) ++++++++++++++ I do the high-deductible plan at work, but you should know approximately what your normal medical service consumption is to figure out what it will cost you, and pay particular attention to coinsurance rates and out-of-pocket maximum - in-network and out - for the HDHP. If you are a modest or near-zero consumer of medical services, the HDHP is often the way to go but if you do get sick or injured, it's going to cost you. I think the HDHP is a lot closer to the idea of actual *insurance* as opposed to "medical cost-sharing" but whether it makes sense or not depends a lot on how much you use and what you can weather if something gets ugly during the year. I have seen HDHPs with the minimum deductible to be considered "high deductible" - which isn't actually all that high - but with brutal coinsurance rates and five-figure out-of-pocket maximums. Read the fine print carefully. If you don't consume much in terms of medical services and could cut a check for the out-of-pocket maximum, then high-deductible plans often make sense. If you use a fair amount of medical services, you often end up coming out better with a traditional PPO-type plan once you compare co-pays and smaller deductibles along with higher premium verses the higher deductibles and lower premium. Bust out the calculator and look at what you spent last year, compare it to an estimate of what you expect this year (e.g., are you having or plan to have a baby? Imagine a movie where (gasp!) there are BOTH a strong male AND a strong female character. But, no. Binary twits that they are, one must diminish as the other advances. Okay then...
Anywho, that's what made the Angry Gal-Death Wish movie "Peppermint" - so good. Yeah, she's trained but they very very rarely have her trying to go toe to toe with some guy. She's always using an equalizer like a knife or gun or sucker-punching with brass knucks. Plus, the actress can act and does physical action well so the fight scene aren't a mess of shaky cam quick cuts and/or CGI. So, go rent "Peppermint" instead - BONUS! All the woke critics hated this movie cuz the villains are Mexican Drug Lords. Posted by: naturalfake at October 24, 2019 04:59 PM (XCfh1) 329

The big cheer about Frozen was that there was no love interest, because people were upset "Every princess has to have a boyfriend, that's her reason for doing everything, why does she have to have a love interest, you're reducing them to the girlfriend!!!!"

Yeah I think the MCU survived this far on momentum more than anything else. They started out brilliant but by the last two Avengers movies it was "well I like these guys so let's see how it ends up." They've done a pretty poor job with great characters all in the name of character arc or growth or something, not sure what. Maybe the actors were bored with their character (like Thor).
Spider-Man you can kind of explain though. I think they got the rights to do Spidey... but he couldn't be the real spidey. So MJ is a puerto rican hacker, Aunt May is a milfy 40 year old, Peter has a sidekick, Spider-Man wears iron man armor, etc. All of the elements are like 25 degrees off plumb, like an alternate universe Spider-Man. 262 Oh is THAT why they fired him? Because he yelled about how pumped he was that they got a great player that helped them win the championship?
I read the NY Post's version of this, and don't see what he did was so bad. "Thank God we got Osuna!" OK, he finished a 75-game suspension for violating baseball's domestic violence policy - but he finished in July 2018, over a year ago. And some reporterette - who IMO shouldn't be in the clubhouse in the first place - wore a purple bracelet recognizing domestic violence and often tweeted out the phone number for women's services when Osuna took the mound for the Astros last year. So what? In my view HER actions were wildly unprofessional. You're there to report on baseball, honey, not to push your personal agenda. I liked Princess and the Frog okay but really the last straight Disney film (non Pixar) I really enjoyed was Big Hero 6 Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 24, 2019 05:15 PM (KZzsI) 402

Saw "Zombieland: Double Tap" the other day -
Fun movie. Good comedy. Good action and acting. . Storyline.....ehhhhh. Basically, it's how they've learned to live in Zombieland. So, the problems are more or less personal ones. Not quite as good as the first one. Still, lots of good laughs. And BONUS!!! - Rednecks with guns are the Heroes! That's why it's receiving lots of grief from the Woketards. Check it out. 391 Each sequel must double the number of car chases and explosions . It's in the rules apparently.
Posted by: Easy Andy at October 24, 2019 05:13 PM (mesZS) Which is why Blues Brothers 2 bombed so badly. No WAY you could double the amount of car wrecks from the first movie! Posted by: The Duke at October 24, 2019 05:19 PM (NgKpN) 406

It is utterly maddening.
Posted by: alexthechick - Ragebunny. Hopping all around. at October 24, 2019 04:14 PM (GbPPJ) She was tough, but they didn't have her doing stupid things that no woman could do, even one in great shape. In other words, they kept her character realistic. Posted by: WOPR at October 24, 2019 05:25 PM (J70i0) 408
380 speaking of blaxploitation - I watched Sugar Hill on TCM recently (from 1974) and I think that is my favorite Zombie movie yet. and you can't get the theme song, "Super-Natural VooDoo Woman!" out of your head.
Plot - Whitey kills her Man! Sugar Wants Revenge! Sugar goes to Mother Maitresse and gets the VooDoo zombies going, and oh boy is Whitey gonna be sorry he ever messed with Sugar!!! Posted by: Tom Servo at October 24, 2019 05:11 PM (Kpl3J) One of my all-time favorite movies is Undercover Brother. It's kind of a comedic homage to blaxploitation movies, and much better than Austin Powers, IMHO - especially that execrescent sequel with Beyoncé. It's a shame it never became as successful. And then Terminator Salvation came along and sucked.
"Well, we can't do just the future. People didn't like that! People like this franchise for the time travel!" Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Facehugger at October 24, 2019 04:17 PM (q80AH) I know a lot of people hate T3 because it changed the ending logic of T2. However, it was more of a variation on T2. You can change the specifics of the future, but maybe not the general direction. So, you can prevent a Judgement Day, but not a war with the machines. As Taylor said above, it would have been a good follow up movie or movies with the actual war and a realization that nothing is set. Humanity can lose. Sorry...but I love fat Thor.
Look the guy fucked up and half the universe died. He personally caused that, and feels responsible for it. So he's on a drinking and eating binge. Checking out of the world. Friends hate you, make fun of you. Feeling unworthy. Finally sees his mother and start the journey back. End Game was a meditation on how people deal with the worst grief imaginable. People check out (Iron Man, and Thor), or focus on what is right in front of them (CA), or throw themselves into their work (BW, WM, and CM), get dark (hawkeye) or go on a self improvement binge (Hulk). It was a surprisingly realistic. Still a superhero flick, but there was more to it. Posted by: Inspector Kemp at October 24, 2019 05:47 PM (noE+3) 412

But the one weird moment when this chick says she is
a lesbo, which they just kind of threw in there while the other world monster and Russians! are trying to kill them. Seemed really out of place. Like an afterthought. Posted by: Guy Mohawk at October 24, 2019 04:37 PM (r+sAi) The theory is it was an afterthought and demanded by Netflix. Even a lot of homosexuals think it was just tacked on because she never gives any clues. She acts like she is normal. Plus, she still acts normal afterwards, especially at the video store. So, just accept she is hetero and she panicked in that one scene. Posted by: WOPR at October 24, 2019 06:02 PM (J70i0) 414

Prediction:
The Rise of Skywalker is going to make a shit ton of money. Pre-sales already broke Endgame's pre-sale record. Solo's financial failure will be seen as a fluke. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Facehugger at October 24, 2019 04:48 PM (q80AH) That's only based on pre-sales from one ticket vendor, which happens to be owned partially by Disney. It's going to make money. It's going to struggle and likely won't break 1 billion. The trailer has been met with "meh." Posted by: WOPR at October 24, 2019 06:15 PM (J70i0) 416
Just saw a screening of "Knives Out" a whodunit with a stellar cast, ruined because of a very heavy handed pro Illegal immigration subtheme and gratuitous Trump hatred. I told the reviewers/publicists that the political BS ruined the movie for me. Save your money.
