Mark Hemingway: Is the Anti-Trump "Resistance" Just the Attempt of the Ruling Class/Establishment/Managerial Class to Give Legitimacy to Their Worldview of Socially-Favored Fictions?

Interesting ideas.

Also, it starts off with a nice little story about a young Mark Hemingway discovering the world is often corrupt and filled with self-dealers. (He learned this at a baseball card shop.)

For some time, I have been trying to articulate a specific idea about how various elites and institutions cover for the political class and how the Trump-era "resistence" was the antithesis of this. Then a very smart friend of mine, thinking along nearly identical lines, blurted this out over email:

I think the world generally, and the world of the powerful in particular, is far less lucid and more incoherent than most assume. The main difference between Trump and his predecessors is that the professional class / deep state / neoliberal order / whatever-you-want-to-call-it is fluent in a language that imposes a kind of regulative fiction on that chaos. Their fluency gives them gives them a patina of legitimacy and not a little power over the less fluent, which comforts some normies but also drives conspiratorial thinking. Trump and a lot of the people around him lack this fluency and have no interest in cultivating it.

I think the term "regulative fiction" is misleading. Those fluent in Nietzsche's writings might get it, but I don't think it's a good word for a general audience, as it suggests this has to do with government regulation.

It doesn't. It is meant to mean that the Ruling Caste has created a simplified story --- a mythology, we could say, a mythos -- which simplifies the unruly chaos of the real world into a more easily-grasped (and very untrue) vision of the world and teaches certain morals and virtues (claimed morals and virtues, anyway) based upon that mythology.

This mythos just coincidentally also happens to justify why they are the only ones Fit to Rule. All aspects of the mythos are designed to, or by happy accident, identify problems (or fictionalized, simplified versions of problems) which the Ruling Caste is uniquely able to solve, due to (here are sub-myths that support the overarching Ur-Myth) of their education, their good taste and judgment their (they never say this but it's obvious that they think it) breeding, etc.

For what it's worth, the phrase "regulative fiction" is borrowed from Nietzsche, or at least his translator.

I think this desperate need to maintain the regulative fiction in Washington is the whole ballgame for understanding what is going on with the Trump administration. For a very long time before Trump, the "regulative fiction" was getting very, very discordant with reality.

Again, feel free to substitute "mythology" or "mythos" or even "Creation myth" or "self-justifying, egocentric personal mythology" for "regulative fiction."

Certainly, the WMD issue and poorly planned wars in the Bush administration soured even conservative voters. And then the Obama administration happened and things got a million times worse, because while the media are as invested in maintaining the regulative fiction generally, they are very interested in it as a partisan and specifically ideological matter.

...

I think voters in no small part voted for Trump because they were sick of being told rosy stories about how the government operates.

He notes that the current project of the beltway priests maintaining belief in their increasingly-bizarre mythos is to paint Trump as a clown who shouldn't be supported, so that their religion has no loud, popular apostate challenging it.

Except they can't do that without asking voters to choose between Trump's behavior and Washington’s preferred narrative of how things are supposed to work, and Beltway types still haven’t grasped that voters decided long before Trump arrived on the political scene that most of what passes for standard operating procedure in D.C. is just as farcical.

Hemingway goes into that, noting, for example, that the public does not credit Pierre Delecto and the rest of the High Priests of the Pro-Government Mythology who are always screaming about Trump violating "norms," because they've known for a long, long time that those claiming to be custodians of our precious "norms" are violating those norms all the time, and often more egregiously than Trump does.

Read the whole thing. It's interesting. I have a point I'd like to make that jogs along with Hemingway's, but it's not quite the same (I don't think), and I'll save that for later.

It just so happens that Victor Davis Hanson also writes about the "norms" the Norms-Defenders claim are so precious to them -- alleged norms which they're viciously abusing every single day.

But, of course, those norms must be sacrificed -- along with actual conservative governance -- to save these supposed norms.

We had to burn the norms to save them, it turns out.

The so-called deep state detests him. An anonymous op-ed writer in the September 5, 2018 New York Times bragged about the bureaucracy's successful efforts to ignore Trump’s legal mandates--a sort of more methodical version of the comical Rosenstein-McCabe attempt to stage a palace coup and remove Trump, or the Democrats efforts to invoke the 25th Amendment and declare Trump crazy, bolstered by an array of Ivy League psychiatrists who had neither met nor examined him.

...

Most of the prominent New York-Washington, D.C. insider Republican pundits abhor him. The creed of a NeverTrumper is that it is well worth the effort to see the current Republican president removed, and his administration imploded--even if that means four or eight years of an Elizabeth Warren, a Bernie Sanders, or a Joe Biden agenda as voiced in the debates. That would likely mean Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, slavery reparations, permissible infanticide in the case of late-term abortions, a wealth tax, and a generally socialist platform, from renouncing student debts to veritable open borders.

Only amid the ashes of Trump's destruction do sober and judicious conservative intellectuals, writers, pundits, think-tankers, and establishment Republican grandees believe they can step in to rebirth the Republican Phoenix, nurturing the rising new party with its once hallowed traditions as exemplified by George H.W. Bush, John McCain, and [Pierre Delecto, scrub-boy and butter-captain at the French "Follies Bourgeiois" bath-house].

...

The Left detests Trump for a lot of reasons besides winning the 2016 election and aborting the progressive project. But mostly they hate his guts because he is trying and often succeeding to restore a conservative America at a time when his opponents thought that the mere idea was not just impossible but unhinged.

And that is absolutely unforgivable.

There's a great more to that essay too.

12 Ace, the term you're looking for is "Myth of Legitimacy." It's the story the elites tell that justifies their elitism. In early civilizations they were connected to the gods; later they had a mandate of some kind from heaven or from the people; then our modern masters' myth of legitimacy was The Competent People, the ones who would handle things so we wouldn't be troubled by a complex world.

At the most basic level, Trump refises to use their language.

They scoff at his simpleton vocabulary, or brand it a "hate" and white nationalism, but. . . he says abortion is killing a baby, not "reproductive health." He says illegal immigration is law-breaking and that it is mostly criminals, not "dreamers."

He slays their myths ever time he uses plain, descriptive language in place of the agreed upon euphemisms.

45 Thanks Ace. I am thinking our public institutions are not the problem, but our quality of citizenry, from elites on down, has really gone down hill. Easy life, poor education, yes those are all factors, but the real problem is the weak-assed unwillingness to forcibly oust evil leftists from polite society. One example: Bill Ayers should still be asking for parole and not spending a rich pension every year. More pertinent examples are people Lois Lernor, Jim Comey or Andrew McCabe.

If Bill Barr lets these people get off, or slaps them around a little without real and serious penalties (should Brennan face a firing squad? Inquiring minds want to know...), well then I mourn for future Americans. This is tough stuff to resolve but we need to fucking man-up.

It's more than that, it is a psychological wound, a grave insult that needs to be replied to. That's where the real rage is coming from, a sense of worth that has been shown to be false. People can stand most anything but not a threat to their psychological base, their sense of self-worth.

Pride and wounded vanity and all of that fuels the insanity.

51 This is a very good piece, full of insight. This exactly describes what I've been watching with amazement for several days, the absolute Outrage that all Right-Thinking People are expressing about Syria - even though the situation is being resolved without much fighting, with few atrocities, with NO American Casualties, and with wide support from the American People.

And yet the response is OUTRAGE!!!! Why? Because to do it, he had to violate the "regulative fiction" (operating Mythology) of what we're doing in the Middle East. Not to mention upsetting a bunch of pork barrel applecarts.

I realized Sunday that to make the critics case, one had to assume that it was in America's Interest to guarantee a a strip of Syrian land to a small faction of Kurds, to the point that we would physically Go To War against Turkey, even though Turkey's primary goal was to provide a space for Syrian refugees to go back to Syria, and also noting that the Kurds had no real claim to the land themselves.

I suppose it makes sense if you think it's outrageous to ask Mexican refugees to ever go back to Mexico.

53 I've had thoughts along similar lines: that Trump is the rectification of names. The language that we use to describe the world no longer matches reality, and the professional class knows this. In fact, they count on it. Trump is an attempt by the voters to bring how we describe the world and how it actually is back into alignment, and that terrifies the professional class.

I think it's bigger than that because it is happening elsewhere, such as in the UK with Brexit, or in Poland where their leaders are refusing to submit to the EU's demands. The Western world's governing class, made up of a lot of global elitists, has gone to far. People are waking up and fighting back. 81 "I think voters in no small part voted for Trump because they were sick of being told rosy stories about how the government operates."

That's certainly true. I'd come to the point where it was obvious that no matter how cynical you were about government (especially Federal government), you weren't cynical enough. And not enough by a long shot.

And that was the primary reason I voted Trump with enthusiasm. It was a "F*** ALL of you. You and your machine sucks and apparently has since before I was born. I've never experienced competent, uncorrupted government in my life and no matter what Trump does, it'll be better than I've ever experienced."

Trump was SMOD. And by the looks of the D.C. Deep State, academia, MFM, etc. response to him, he really is SMOD because he's blowing up all the fiefdoms just by continuing to expose them.

Trump needs 40 years to undo all that has been done.

84 At some point, hoping Bill Barr does his job is the kind of thinking that got us here in the first place. It would be nice, but by no means necessary, or even expected. Did anyone expect British governors to offer redress for far less vicious crimes in colonial America? Course not.

Yet you can't begin talking about legitimacy without noting that only the relentless and total suppression of speech online- functional monopoly- keeps the whole scam from completely imploding on itself. Speech in America is about as free as in Iran. More: Twitter even has the temerity to silence the President.

Not only does this silence normal people, it is a disturbing corroboration of the claim that a tiny minority have a monopoly over American media. The act of suppression justifies actual white supremacist propaganda, and pushes white Americans closer in that direction.

+++++++++++++
This is a very excellent post, Ace.

And their mythos is, fundamentally, "the government is a force for good and we run it as a priestly class for the benefit of our flocks." Trump is a heretic - as you say, an apostate - who is blowing their theology wide open. They aren't competent. They aren't helpful. They aren't good. The state is not a force for a good.

Conservatives remember that last point. The professional conservatives - the ones *in* the ruling class - have forgotten it or, more likely, never believed it.

Government operations should be a lot like how the Left used to describe abortion: "minimal, constitutional and rare" should be the underlying force of state action - not "the most good for most people" or "helping save people from themselves" or "maintaining my position because the rubes are too stupid to know that I ought to be where I am" or whatever else is worming its way through their high-density skulls.

I don't think so, at least not universally. Clinton might be - she's a gangster's gangster.

Most of them, I think, are motivated by money only insofar as they don't want to be poor or "working-class." A lot of these people probably don't earn more than a good plumber, but they feel better about their modest means because of the *status* that they get. And the power.

I think it is far more about belonging to the elite (status) and being able to impose their will (power) than it is about wealth.

I think Big Government wants to attain the same state of inaccessibility that happened in science and fine art early in the 20th century. You legitimately have to know stuff to understand the science, the art less so.

Is this also because government is so heavily populated with lawyers? God knows they love them some non-layman's vocabulary. (All moron lawyers are exceptions.)

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at October 21, 2019 05:04 PM (Xm5XV)

155 Well, this is the thing.

Trump is a flawed human being, for certain. He has his problems like we all do. But for a long time now people have been aware that the others in government are at least as flawed as he is, but are slicker about covering it up.

And if there's one thing that an American despises still, its a slick cheat. If you're up front and honest about your flaws, people tend to be ore forgiving, or at least cut you slack. But if you lie about them and cover them up, then people will despise you for it.

So continually trying to portray Trump as a flawed human being does not work. Yep, flawed. But so are you, and you're a hypocriate about it, plus you don't care about me or what I believe in or want to see done.

So the choice isn't between the noble elite and the knuckle dragging troglodyte. Its between two flawed choices, one of whom lies to me and treats me like trash.

157 yeah, well, it's not so much a confluence of elites or whatever, but a complete absence of oversight. The mainstream press, the ones that even the GOP pretends to accept as real news, simply ignores any story that doesn't support the present day's narrative.

We literally know nothing.

Well, not we. We're in a samizdat sort of underground. But the narrative in the real world excludes all facts not approved by CNN, even if CNN has no actual viewers. or credibility.

So, that's a bad thing.

Posted by: 18-1 at October 21, 2019 05:01 PM (WdocV)

Honestly, the minute we acknowledge that the law is used to protect the elite and not the people, their power collapses. LE agents won't be able to set foot outside blue cities without convoys: and one captured media center is all it will take to have a very strong voice for America on the public airwaves.

Their support is only ever an inch deep. Actual minorities and most urban liberals are not stepping out to get shot for Hillary.

162 A note on impeachment, discussed in the last thread:

If you would have asked me two weeks ago, I was absolutely certain that Pelosi was going to get the House to vote for Impeachment, just to embarrass the Senate candidates. She and Schiff had it all teed up.

But I will not say that today. I grossly underestimated Pelosi and Schiff's ability to totally wreck their own case, and to make themselves political laughing stocks. I did not believe they could have mishandled this as badly as they have! Instead of a groundswell of opinion, they are cultivating a bad joke - to the point that they're not even all on the same page anymore. Example: today there's an article on Politico about how Schumer is worried that "Trump is going to reveal the whistleblower illegally!!!" (psst Chuck, it's a former NSC analyst named Eric Ciamarella, there, I saved Trump the trouble)

And yet over in the House, Schiff has stopped mentioning the "Whistleblower" completely, and has dropped all plans to have him testify. Because oops, any questioning will reveal that it was all just a deep state op from the start.

It should have been easy to fabricate something to justify at least a House vote on Impeachment - but Schiff and Pelosi are so incompetent that they have even screwed that part up. (meanwhile Nadler is just back to packing his piehole full of food 24/7)

Everyone in America has some affinity for royalty because the assume that if they lived in a country with royalty they would be royalty. Americans never ever consider that they might be serfs.

The America that was created by the Founding Fathers is still there, as enduring as ever.

The why--Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights--that which is inalienable for ALL, and the Constitution--the blueprint that defines the most unique political system ever devised, ALL remain.

A great deal of it has been obscured and fouled by the filth laid over it by the left. Needs cleansing.

This is consistent with my thoughts on it for some time. These people want to be an aristocracy - powerful without cause. The problem is that an aristocracy requires serfs.

They think they can be an aristocracy and keep the industrial civilization they like living in. They can't. It doesn't work that way.

By the time they realize this, though, it will be too late but they also won't care. As long as they remain elite aristocrat rulers, it doesn't matter. As long as their mud hut is bigger than yours and you throw tribute at them, that is all they care about and want.

maybe not everyone, I do not now, however, when I was in my early years and Diana married chuck, there was some affinity for the pomp and circumstance without associating it with the underlying structure.

When you start studying history it becomes immediately apparent why it is undesirable. However when you are very young and assuming you would be royalty is it not so awful.

237 Beyond the physical violence to come - and I believe it to be inevitable now - we must prepare for the rest of what will happen. They'll blatantly try to lock us out of economic activity, of course. That means we'll need parallel structures if we want to go beyond simple barter (which at first we'll be using). The law is useless, naturally, as at this point we won't be under the same laws as they are; we'll need to work out our own systems here, too, and I suggest it be more than everyone-for-themselves vigilantism if we want to build a functioning society afterwards.

One thing though, and this should be obvious by now but for too many people it isn't: Forget about a secular society. That experiment has failed. Period. It's just a question of whose religion it will be (and the Left has its own, no mistaking it). If we don't maintain that template we won't be able to rebuild anything worth living in.

Going to be ugly and interesting times. I'd be lying if I said I didn't dread it, but...oddly, I also feel a bit hopeful, which is something from me these days.

I cannot be the only professional-class Trump voter. I'm not in the power class, but I am in the professional class. I suspect there are more people like me out there than we think, but there is no real way to know.

The class thing has been an undercurrent throughout the entire Trump era. During the 2016 campaign, some talking head or other was droning on about how Trump isn't the right kind of rich guy - he's what poor people think a rich guy should be like.

They were right, of course - he isn't a blue-blooded New England/Mid-Atlantic type of rich guy, or a genteel Southern type of rich guy, or a sanctimonious Silicon Valley type of rich guy. He's a brash, boastful, in-your-face rich guy. He is indeed, by their standards, the wrong kind of rich guy.

248 We know the Soviets spent a lot of effort (allegedly more than their physical military) on Psychological warfare and infiltration. This was in influence operations, spying, kompromat, infiltration, cultural sabotage ... and imo it was VERY effective. (still is)

Now we see our own FBI/CIA in a PsyOp to control our own elections, and to run a coup, "dirtying up" Trump, trying to frame him for their own crimes, using the MSM and DNC and foreign governments, and CIA assets. "TopMen" coordinated these attacks across several agencies, and across the private sector (media, Google, other sectors)

So the question is, how many of these cartel like groups are there, how many coordinate with each other, is there any hope of rooting out the rot that is the mafia that runs inside our government, and much of Europe? (and most of the non-Western world)

Hillary's "resistance" may be in the beltway cocktail party mindset ... built on that regulative fiction, but there are more seditious planners and plotters, at the highest levels, imo. Soros has direct control of his dirty empire, and maybe there is no higher level of coordination.

But the Big20 banks have overruled our own AG before ... and the crime syndicates can still run/launder billions through the banking cartel. This is a syndicate beyond just a DC mindset/fiction ... but TheNarrative may offer it all a cult like fake virtue, that their insiders cling to for comfort. The Smugness, it is Thick.

I include much of the financial and legal sectors in that class, which not coincidentally share education, breeding, and worldview with the governmental, educational, media, and cultural elites that are more obvious. If we had the standard of living of, say, Mexico or Egypt, not even the Third World, we could not support this vast infrastructure and the free "stuff" army upon which it depends for votes and foot soldiers. Trump and the deplorables represent a revolt against all of them by the people who work. We all realize this at some level, and that is why the struggle is so vicious. I remember not too long ago when it took GW Bush almost 9 months to put together a coalition of a large number of foreign countries who were willing to help us go into Iraq after 9/11 to remove Saddam Hussein. ( I"m not going to debate the hindsight merits of that move). It wasn't until dozens of foreign governments, half a dozen intelligence services provided evidence to the UN and to our gov. that Hussein had WMD ( evidence including gassing the Kurds) to finally get an approval vote and declaration of some type to allow him to start the Iraq War. Whose removal of Hussein from the seat of power took something like ten days. And of course, 17 years later, we are still there, but that is not the point of this post.

Along comes Barry, and suddenly, under the guise of "terrorism" , we have now been engaged in removal of a sitting head of state in Libya, we have bombed people in Somalia, we have been in Syria for eight years ( it took Trump , what , 30 days to have the troops wipe out ISIS), we are in Iraq. All without any kind of declaration, vote, etc. all of it has been executive directives. Don't forget the jerks who were demanding Trump send troops to Venezuela to depose Maduro. Now it's screaming about the Kurds, whom we were supposed to fight a Nato ally over to protect, who can't even figure out who their leader is, and who have a large faction of whom our state department has designated a terrorist org.

I don't agree with Tulsi Gabbard on anything other than she is right about troops being used as proxies in a never ending , no goal game of providing arms and equipment and someone in Congress getting rich off of them being there.

288 Interesting read.

The idea of being forced to choose between a social standard and reality that has been stamped as "proper" and the "vulgar", or common, isn't really an anomaly in politics.

It is extremely prevalent in social norms as well. Cancel culture is the most classic example, I think, where a ruling class of academic elites, sociologists, professional class doctors and lawyers, and pop culture figures exercise a perceived authority to determine what is proper and what is vulgar.

The passing of social standards in previous American generations was largely built on family and Christian thought. With the withering of faith and an immutable source of a universal moral standard and the decimation of the family structure, a vacuum has formed and has naturally been filled by those that seize on the opportunity to imprint their own illegitimate claim to acceptable ideology on any given subject rather than leave individuals to follow an immutable exterior source of morality or a group of individuals sharing a social contract of proper ideology. In other words, either God told us what was right or wrong and we had accepted our inferiority to His revealed will or mom's and dad's passed on the social standards that had applied to allow us to all get along.

Laws popped up to support the latter and manners were taught to insure the decency of the former. So I might not be able to shout "Fire" in a theater because it was considered important enough to form laws against, but I shouldn't shout "Fuck You" in a theater because it was bad form to do so.

But our society has shifted to the point where the arbiters of law have decided that laws are only partly applicable in situations they deem necessary and never to themselves and our social norms, for lack of heritage and common values, have become "can'ts" instead of "shouldn'ts" and are enforced through economic and social sanctions enforced by an illegitimate, elitist internet mob that has no actual claim to that authority, but whose noise is legitimized by media and industry.

But the reality is, from a true philosophically libertarian standpoint, that whether I accept commonplace social morality or not, is not an indicator whether I am a successful human, good to the extent that people can be good, or right and correct.

It's for this reason, a government can only have proper authority based upon the law rather than men and morality can only have weight when based on an immutable moral font greater than mankind itself. Atheism destroys morality because it makes all things relative. A two-tiered legal system, or de facto aristocracy, destroys a nation because the portion of life left for people to control is usurped by a ruling class.

A nation of laws, evenly applied, guided by an all-powerful God will prosper. A nation of men, governed only by their own whimsy and desire will surely fail.

Why would he? Donald Trump has respected the choices and value of the working class for decades, which is why he was "surprisingly" competitive in industrial states. In 2020, he will be damn near unassailable if he sticks to his trade message.

By contrast, he obviously doesn't care about the generally useless liberal upper class feeling uncomfortable among their Inner Party friends and co-workers. Appealing to that crowd requires a level of artificial Washington etiquette that can only stamp on the Trump brand with his actual base.

303 The Hemingway piece was interesting but fell a bit short. In fact, those above who suggested Hemingway is overthinking what is a naked attempt to retain unmerited wealth and raw power are closer to the reality.

"The Peter Principle" 50 years ago proved prophetic in all but one very important regard. Those who attain positions above their capacity to perform aren't at all unhappy as the Principle maintained they would be. They simply are aware they in over their heads and as long as that isn't threatened they live fat and happily. Our cognitive elites, in and out of D.C., were quite content to be utter mediocrities but Trump's win threatened the illusion they achieved their positions due to their abilities (Hemingway is right there). The Dunning Kruger effect is the coin of the realm now.

Mass firings in disregard of civil protections would be required even to achieve a semblance of sanity. That isn't about to happen.

This very easily could be the end of the Republic if a modus vivendi isn't achieved. My bet is it won't be.

319 The number of complete TDS hysterics I encounter online who are just totally freaked out by (supposedly) things that Trump does that are out of the "norm"

The thing they're missing is that the norm, The Way Things Are Done is exactly what most of America is sick of and wants changed.

One of the best things about that Glenn Beck video did was to show that the rebellion against the status quo in Washington was really kicked off by electing Obama. People saw in him a real chance for things to be different, a fresh start, something new.

And a lot of what he campaigned on, was good (shrinking bureaucracy, increasing transparency, etc). The problem was that with him you got more of the same, but this time with hatred toward half the country and more corruption.

So people went "well F it then, how about this Trump guy, he's definitely different."

The Norm IS THE PROBLEM and that's what these NeverTrump jackwagons do not seem to grasp.

332 Back in the days before he became a bitter, plagiarizing, undersexed loser, Jonah Goldberg would bring up the Confucian concept of the "rectification of names," which is where people start using euphemisms to describe things that aren't going well and eventually the language itself becomes meaningless.

The "rectification" is the chaos that results as the words regain their true meaning.

It's ironic that he used to bring this up all the time because that's exactly what's going on. People who keep speaking of "free trade" have been lying through the teeth for decades. It wasn't free trade, it was exporting our manufacturing base so investment bankers could make more money.

Same with "immigration reform." This was a gambit to lock cheap migrant labor into the legal code, again benefitting the upper classes.

Trump is the rectifier, he's exposing all of this, which is why the current Mandarins despise him.

And yes, he broke Goldberg's rice bowl.

360 The thing they're missing is that the norm, The Way Things Are Done is
exactly what most of America is sick of and wants changed.

The thing is that our Founders had the audacity to print our Constitution so's we could read it. In Inglais, at that!

And what people see written in it is not The Way Things Are Done today. Therein lies the rub.

So who are you going to believe when it comes to TWTAD, the powermongers and Progda (BIRM) or your own lying eyes.

So they sell out the true humility, the true oath of office to serve ... and they dress themselves in the royal garb of nobility (ego, self serving, contempt for God).

So they can have both ... money and power ... and the (false narrative) of Superiority. They need the fake narrative ... even the Pharisees probably believed in their own superior virtue. Cognitive dissonance ...

These "Mormons" and the self-hating, socialist "Jews" are exactly analogous.
They have not only abandoned their faith, they actively work against it.
Note that I'm not, NOT, making a blanket statement about all Mormons and Jews here. There are plenty of both who still adhere to their actual faith and the moral code set forth by it. The "elites", though....
And, of course, the same is true of the "elites" of other mainstream denominations.

That reason is Trump's political incorrectness. We're talking about the control of language and ultimately thought and life. Trump defied all of it, and became an exemplar of the freedom to say "fuck it, I'll say what I want to say because it's the truth." THIS was unforgivable.

Trump, as I perceive his deeds and words, but mostly deeds, genuinely wants others to succeed and earn a sense of accomplishment for doing so. Among all other Presidents in my lifetime going back to Eisenhower, only Reagan approached this behavior, but Trump does it better.

Of course to be part of an elite, as Ace has pointed out, there have to be people who are not in it. That would be people like us.

Joining the fake elite is the path of least resistance for the softheaded. It must be so nice. They don't have to worry about facts or logic. And all the problems, such as for example a flood of H1 workers and illegals, or an increasingly tyrannical government, these problems just melt away. The worry is gone-- there is only one real problem, us-- the people who keep insisting that the problems exist.

They have so many new friends in the woke tribe Annoying and threatening us gives them purpose in life, and they don't have to fight fair or tell the truth. So nice.

509 My personal take is that the period we are in is a crisis point in Western Civilization that has been gaining speed since WWI. The collapse of the Warsaw pact eliminated outside enemies for a time but it exhausted and corrupted both Russia and the U.S. along with their allies. Sort of like how the Eastern Empire fighting with the Persians allowed the Arabs via Islam and later Turks to overcome both established powers. China seems to be filling that role now.

Internally, democracies across the board are beginning to buckle under internal contradictions as universal suffrage inevitably means raiding the treasury for goodies, insiders get to skim the take, euphemisms replace honest debate, and scientific, artistic, education, and bureaucracies become ossified.

Basically now the battle is between cosmopolitans which are roughly about 10 percent or so of the population versus the other 90 percent that are tribal/nationalist in nature. Thus, the cosmopolitans seek to weaken dominant "tribes" or "nationalists" via dilution with "tribes" that rely on them for protection and money and by the heavy taxes necessary to keep the welfare state up and running. The taxes via spending along with other international flows in trade and finance are then skimmed by the cosmopolitans for fun, power, and pleasure.

This kind of universal state either collapses via wars (see 1914-45, the American Revolution through the the Revolutions of 184 or internally such as the Reformation, the Roman Empire, etc.

___

You're not. If you look at polling from 2016, Trump won the upper income, both $100K+ a year and $250K+ a year demo.

The toothless, uneducated hillbilly Trump voter is a myth the left created. And nobody's ever really pushed back on it, including Trump himself.

Hell, they say the same thing about every Republican probably since Taft. He's dumb, his supporters are dumb, we so good. This particular class attack has been part of the arsenal for generations and is by no means specific to Trumpers. It has always been part of the tale for the 'neverTrumpers' and insiders to cling to, that they are better than the regular GOP.

514 The regulative fiction among the local wine moms is that I'm packing a horse cock. This will stay true until I run out of quaaludes and/or wine.

515 Some Deep Staters (like the Enviro Evangelicals) believe in the mythology. Others only believe it in part but find it a useful way to hold positions of importance that come with pay and influence often at odds with their own average capabilities.

Does it matter if one actually believes the fiction or only believes in its utility? Well, if one can destroy the utility of the fiction then one can potentially destroy the allegiance to it. That of course would mean making "service" in the Feral Government and the follow up service in K Street and assorted industries far less attractive. Is that likely? Probably not, even with President Trump. The spending continues unabated and the ever increasing roles of the Feral Government are always the topic, never the reduction of its role.

As for the true believers? Well, they'll always be the Japanese soldiers hiding in the jungle, waiting for the end or a chance to fight the crusade again.

516 NeverTrump complain about Trump's ego but give Maverick a full throat defense

Yet. Everything Maverick did (may he rot in his grace, maggot shitting on his eviscerated corpse) was for his own ego.

He couched it in terms of 'service to his country' but it was his ego.

518 The Trump haters? Not so much. They hate Trump but they can't give you a reason why. They sputter out the usual talking points and that's it.

I walked into a local pub (wearing my Trump 2020 hat, of course) and this dude goes ape-shits cookoo upon the very sight of the red lid. His outrage de jour was the amount of people in prison. I asked him how many were in prison and he goes to his smart phone. "oh, no no no no no no NO!" I exclaimed. "You are pissed and don't know what you are talking about?" I told him that there were roughly 116,000 in the federal prison system, and a quarter of that number were illegal aliens.

He stormed out.

They have BS on their side. Not one original thought amongst them.

He's threatening to, but so far they have deflected that with minimal losses. The real damage there is that he brings the crimes into the open rather than getting actual convictions.

520 The problem is, if the popular vote totals in 2016 are any indication, only 47% of the country are sick of the elites and their faux competence. That leaves 53% perfectly content to continue giving the rent-seekers power as long as they get a little taste of the largess as well.

522 but with all due respect, Lamont, a lot of promises have been kept since the 2016 election, and so many of those votes counted in the popular vote were fraudulent, that I would wager more are ready to go with POTUS this time.

in LA County alone, more than 1 million are being purged from the voter rolls as we speak. thanks to JW
