The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Chuck Grassley is a United States Senator, which means that he is comfortable with delays and obfuscation and institutional roadblocks that prevent most things of substance from happening...ever. In fact, it is his element.

So when even he is complaining about the IG report, something is probably fishy.

This issue is the Rubicon for our country. If the seemingly constant law-breaking embedded in our national institutions is allowed to go on without official notice and punishment, then the relationship we the people have with our government is going to change.

This is not the grift and graft that we all expect from government. After all, government in all its forms is ripe for corruption, and most of us are never surprised by it. In fact, many of us are only surprised by the occasional emergence of an honest man.

No, this is something different, and far more malign. Using the power of the state to manipulate elections is the essence of totalitarianism. Blocking the power of the people to choose their own government is counter-revolutionary, and unfortunately has been tried to great effect in most of the world.

In fact, it is a fine indicator of an unfounded belief in elitism and credentialism and, so obvious currently, Never-Trumpism. Ask any member of the "conservative" cuckocracy his opinion of the FISA mess, and if he downplays it or mocks it, then he is the enemy.

******

There is a refreshing view of the other side below the fold. I was going to lead with it but, as usual, my fellow coblogger and landsman J.J. Sefton beat me to it!

The media will do their utmost to hold up this process, but thankfully they've been repeatedly shooting themselves in the dick for years and have significantly less power with the American people than they did in 2007.

National polls may be getting massaged to show impeachment is popular, but the battleground polls are much more resistant. They're consistently showing impeachment unpopular.

Nancy won't pull the trigger.

Complaining about this is pointless and misses the point. It's how the judicial system works right now. It would be nice if SCOTUS would slap down nationwide injunctions from district judges (something that will happen eventually), but the point of these further appointments is the fact that at least a quarter of the judiciary will be appointed by Trump.

That's a theoretical conservative swing across the nation that's huge. That's making these district and circuit court adverse rulings less likely to happen in the future. The 9th Circuit, with Trump appointees, has already given Trump a few key wins.

This is the stuff that's going to last more than a generation, and brushing it off with nationwide injunctions is simply missing the point of the win. It's losing the forest for the trees.

You can't have it both ways. What were Barr and Durham doing in Italy? In the UK? In Australia? In Ukraine?

Why was it a big deal when it was disclosed a few days ago that Durham had recovered Mifsud's cell phones after hearing his sworn deposition in Italy?

Why did Trump ask the president of Ukraine to cooperate in the ongoing investigation of the 2016 election Barr is running?

Why is Trump going on Hannity like he did last night laying out exactly what happened?

Where it counts is at the appellate level, and if Trump gets a second term, he can make some real, long lasting impact there.
Posted by: Lurking Lurker - Not In My Purview at October 22, 2019 11:41 AM (FiUMj)

==========

Of course, it'll never be 100% Trump judges. It'll never be 100% Republican judges.

However, Trump and Mitch are making Democratic judges less and less important with every appointment. Add in the eventual stoppage of nationwide injunctions, and you've got an extremely different, and much more in line with what they were 150 years ago, court system.

We'll never get back to pre-Marshall, but I think we're looking at the potential for pre-FDR court packing threat.

I believe neither. I believe Barr is here to manage and attempt to retrieve a disastrous breakdown at DoJ, and try to restore it to sanity. I don't believe he's here to rock the government to its foundations by locking up it's upper echelons for their crimes - essentially, just to do damage control and public relations.

And I believe that Trump is fine with that - I think he wants to expose the coup and try its conspirators in the court of public opinion.

Personally, I don't think that's good enough. Not nearly good enough.

263 Once the DOJ has agreed to take evidence from either the FBI or the IG and develop a case, it becomes a prosecution. A GJ is empaneled and subpoenas are issued for depositions to back up or confirm the evidence supplied by the FBI and/or the IG. A charge or charges are decided upon by the DOJ depending on the testimony and the evidence and the US Attorney in charge decides what will or will not be successful in obtaining an indictment - if he needs more evidence or facts to bolster his case, either gets more depositions or he GOES BACK to the FBI and/or the IG - he doesn't run off and investigate/probe the matter himself.

This process is what Durham has been running - not a probe, not a wish, no a half baked investigation - its a criminal prosecution process that at some point he decides it will be successful in indictments or he drops it as fruitless.

289 This matter of Barr/Durham going overseas to obtain cooperation is pretty much a diplomatic effort to convince people with evidence to provide it to the US - probably because the FBI or the IG could not get the evidence asked for by Durham due to diplomatic issues or an unwillingness or unease by foreign official to cooperate - if the prosecution/s is/are unsuccessful, where does that leave these foreign officials? Dealing with disgruntled and unhappy US and foreign IC agents, that's what.

So, they aren't gathering evidence - they are convincing people they have no control over to release it so the case can be rounded out.

292 I wish to apologize forever having regarded Mitt Romney as a good man.
Posted by: JEM

He's a "good man" by only ONE measure--he's faithful to his wife and he doesn't drink or smoke. Ironically, he's similar to Trump in that second point, but nobody ever puts that as a plus in Trump's column.

What makes Romney a piece of shit is that by every other measure, he's a back-stabbing, lying, conniving, heel, the very essence of why some people hate Republicans.
On top of that, he parades himself as a "Good Man."
Any Christian knows you don't do that.

300 I always felt that Biden would crash unless the DNC decided he was the one, just like they decided Hillary was the one. Then they would do whatever they could to push him through the nomination process and then paint him as a moderate, union loving, middle class American whose first wife and child died at the hands of a drunk driver and whose brilliant son died from cancer, and who had known such hardship. Someone who had vast experience with foreign governments, working to develop coalitions, etc.

I always felt left on his own, Biden would crash and burn quickly along the way, as has been his history. I had no idea his campaign was as bad as it was, but the DNC apparently wasn't fully in charge of it. He will drop out, IMO, after SC. He can't lose Iowa, NH, PA, and SC and win the nomination
Had Obama not picked him for the above reasons as cover for his own ideology, Biden would maybe still be a Senator from Delaware, or more likely, a lobbyist.

The case will either be brought or dropped based on whether is it strong enough to obtain the indictments and has a reasonable chance in court - one would think a slam dunk would have brought indictments quick but this is a complex case with lots powerful players so I get why its taking time - and these people have legal representation that are also connected and are no dopes - but I'd say that this prosecution needs to have a couple of high profile indictments by 2020 or something just can't be brought with success against these people.

Property ownership requirenents will eventually produce a disenfranchised renter's society, as the wealthy buy up all the land (thus limiting the vote to their social class).

A far better solution would be to gauge taxes paid versus benefits received.

If you are a net payer, you get a vote.
If you are a net receiver, the largesse is what you get.

This would codify an ancient rule we all learned in childhood: Beggars cannot be choosers.

And that now the cry is "Trump must be impeached because he has demanded loyalty to him from the people who work for him"

It's not just that they are attacking Trump as a proxy for their hate for us--they have deemed all of us who voted for Trump as illegitimate citizens.
Whose votes should and deserve to be nullified.

The deep state and the impeachment crowd DO NOT see our vote for Trump as legitimate--we stole their government from them!

And they will come for both you and I should they get Trump out of the way.

Do they think 63 million people will not see what they are doing?

Mitt Romney justifies his rebellion by wrapping himself in the faded respect for the institutions.
Failing to see that he does far more damage by insulting the 63 million who voted for Trump, siding instead with those who view those voters as usurpers who stole the election.
Failing to see that we have a clear view of the true thieves, the liars, cheats and trash who have taken our government from us, used it for their own ends.

For too long we have given them the respect of their office.
And they have paid us with ashes and vinegar.

Their wages for their treachery are being calculated and weighed--the days for payment approach.

Do you think Trump understands this? Do you think he means it when he says that no president should ever have to go through this again? Property ownership requirenents will eventually produce a disenfranchised renter's society, as the wealthy buy up all the land (thus limiting the vote to their social class).

A far better solution would be to gauge taxes paid versus benefits received.

If you are a net payer, you get a vote.
If you are a net receiver, the largesse is what you get.

This would codify an ancient rule we all learned in childhood: Beggars cannot be choosers.

That's a good point that the founders might not have anticipated, but gaming it out in the modern era does ring true. There is evidence on the domestic side as well, that we are trying to convince witnesses to "release". It has been hidden behind "classified" or "that is under investigation, for the next 20 years"

Trump declassified everything so Barr could pry open that locked box of evidence, but Wray and others still are blockading much, as I understand it. Now they are redacting the IG report ... Trump can declassify it all .. so Barr can see it (even if the public does not see it).

that might wipe out a lot of low wage workers ... just remove the real welfare recipients from the voter role ... and the criminals. And remove the ACORN signups with 40 people at a fake address. It can be done, we have plenty of tech ... but the "commies" fight for fraud at every step.

434 >>Hi Jack - I get why folks are frustrated - I am only saying what my friend who was a US Attorney at the DOJ cautioned me about this case last week - for us laymen on the outside it seems like a slam dunk, but its never as easy as all that.

>>But I do agree with your that the President seems pretty adamant that this case is going to result in a new culture or organizing principle within our LE and IC agencies, and I believe him. And I truly believe that would require high profile indictments to happen.

I absolutely agree. I've been saying here for a long time that there is a big difference between what we know and what can be proved in court. And given the scope of the investigation I'm not surprised in the least it is taking what seems like a long time but what in reality is not.

Nobody wants this over with more than me. But more than anything I want it done right.

437 FWIW, Operation Greylord which targeted widespread corruption in Cook County took about 3 1/2 years to complete. Watergate took about two years from the burglary to Nixon's resignation and the investigation dragged on into 1977.

Since Session apparently did nothing nor did his Deputy (who was covering his own tracks). Essentially the investigation started shortly after Barr was confirmed in February of 2018. Thus, we are about 18 month or so into the process.

Complicated multi-part investigations take time in the most favorable conditions but with the media, intelligence, foreign policy, judicial, Congress, and law community serving as co-conspirators in the coverup, things have to be made crystal clear in order for prosecutions to be successful. That takes time to rollup a network.

At this time, I am neither surprised that it is taking so long nor do I believe that Barr is some sort of cleaner for the establishment. What I do believe is that the depth of the corruption is so deep that fixing it without damaging needful institutions such as the DOJ and intelligence is akin to changing the transmission of a car as it goes down the road.

My personal belief is that the Clinton raid on security clearance files early in 1993 along with the increasing domestic reach of NSA intercept capabilities after the switch to digital communications and computerization of records have created a perfect storm. Essentially we have arrived at the surveillance society.

Note the supposed penetration of Chinese intelligence into security clearance files has essentially kompromat materials on millions of federal workers and others with security clearances. Like Hillary's secret server, I would not be surprised that since the Chinese could be blamed that domestic political operatives took advantage to grab usable data themselves from SF-86 as the compromise could be blamed on the Chinese. The new CFPB has all electronic financial records and was designed to be unaccountable. Add in the IRS data collection by political operatives on Republicans, the John Doe investigations in Wisconsin, etc. etc. along with unauthorized access of NSA intercepts by "contractors" that is still going on, CIA spying on Senators, Awan's penetration of House and probably Senate Networks, Democratic/Deep State operatives probably have kompromat on most Republicans in elected office as well as in the bureaucracy.

That is why I suspect that Trump brought Barr in as he predated most of the digital kompromat materials but was there when a lot of this stuff began.

I agree. And I think Trump is the best president I've seen in office (including Reagan). BUT it does seem that he has a blind spot when it comes to people that wish to administratively destroy his presidency and this country's system of justice.

444 Chuck should tell his pal Lindsay that he has subpoena power himself to drag Brennan to testify. And Clapper. Comey too, along with a bunch of other evil people. If Lindsay passes, though, then we all know the score.
