Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 10-19-2019

GM Anton Korobov.jpg
GM Anton Korobov, apparently contemplating a less-than-ideal position

(Either that or he's just realized he could've saved 10-15% on car insurance by switching to Geico.)

(h/t lurker 'Guy' for the photo)

TheJamesMadison will be along later with the movie thread. This week, he'll be sub-letting (or is it sub-sub-letting?) the thread out to MP4, whose movie review of an old classic will be getting us into the spirit of Halloween early.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (Chess #3544)

Yeah, I know this position looks kind of weird. How did White's king get all the way up there behind the black pawns? I didn't notice this until it was too late to pick a better probem.

Goal: White can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: One of those knights is kind of in the way

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1053)

Goal: Black can force mate in 6 moves
Hint: Draw White's king even further out by sac'ing a piece

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1054)

How does White play this position? Again, once you think you've found a good first move for White, try to find Black's best defense.

Hint: Find a way to quickly bring the rook into play

It's mate in 6 -- or less.

1...Qxc4+
2.Kxc4

If 2.Kc2 then 2...Qa4+ 3.Kd3 Ba6+ 4.c4 Qxc4+ 5.Ke3 Bh6#
2...Ba6+
3.Kc5 Rb5+
4.Kc4 Rb6+
5.Kc5 d6+

Answer:

1. Bg5 Nf6

The Bishop is immune from capture here. If 1...Qxg5 then 2.Rf1+ Nf6 (2...Bf3 3.Rxf3+ Qf6 4.Qe7#) 3.Qe7#)

2.Rf1 Bf3

Black is reduced to throwing pieces at the coming onslaught.

3.Rxf3 Qxd6
4.Rxf6+ Qxf6
5.Bxf6 gxf6
6.Qe6 Kg7
7.Qf7+ Kh6
8.Qxf6+ Kh5
9.Be2#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

42 Today Melania is shown wearing a $5,500 sequined Erdem cocktail dress worn at NYE party in Mar-a-lago 2018.

Clusters of embroidered flowers are scattered throughout the forties-inspired silhouette.

Though Erdem released the dress with a periwinkle-color belt, Melania removed it for the New Year's Eve party at Mar-a-Lago.

The resulting look, then, was more eighties than its original iteration.

She finished the look off with pointed-toe stilettos in a matching shade of pink.

How are those women carrying those beers in the Moar bier picture?

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at October 19, 2019 05:51 PM (aKsyK)

45 Advanced Problem.

1. Bg5 Qxg5
2. Rf1+ any (either Qf6 or Nf6 ... or Qf5)
3. Qe7#

So black needs to try something else on move 1.

1. Bg5 Nf6
2. Qe6 Qe8
3. Qxf6+ gxf6
4. Bh6#

Black can give away the B on b7 to make this one move longer.

It seems to me that any other move for black leaves him open to Rf1+ ... except Qf6 so ...

1. Bg5 Qf6
2. Bxf6 Nc6 ( ... Nxf6 3. Qe6 any 4. Qf7#).
3. Qe6 Ne8 (or Qf7#)
4. Qe7#

I think that covers everything.

Those are very interesting comments in the post from the "I could never vote for that icky Trump" contingent. I honestly can't fathom people who claim to be so appalled by -- what, his brashness? -- that they would stand by and let a Hillary, Fauxcahontas, or Beto have the presidency. Even though those horrible Dems stand for baby-killing, socialism, graft, political violence and forced imposition of radical social changes -- every evil that they claim to oppose.

But Trump is icky? Really? Honestly, he just seems to drive some people insane.

I can understand why you might explode on them. My approach is not for everybody, but I try not to argue too much (After all I was a church goer who voted Dem for years until Obama ran) and just stick in little comments. When my friend said he was upset by Beto wanting to tax churches who don't support the LBGT agenda I said, "Well, I think they all endorse that. They just didn't say it out loud" or "I think you're more of a moderate Democrat" because some still think I vote Democratic. I said to one, "Did you hear Maxine Waters say, "First we're going to impeach Trump and then we'll go after Pence"?
it may be stuff they've never heard before and may get them to think. With one friend whom I really think is a liberal and not a leftist I agree with him when he says "It's a different world now. White men really are being demonized".

I'd have to disagree, respectfully. Barbarossa was the overall plan to achieve capitulation of the Soviet Union through, ultimately, the capture of Moscow (if not before). Typhoon was the specific operation to surround and capture Moscow and as such it was certainly a key element of Barbarossa.

The Huns didn't give up on Barbarossa until Typhoon failed. After than, they began improvising, starting with Case Blue in the Spring of '42.

I've traditionally rooted against the modern Yankees and the Dodgers (my favorite team as a boy in the 60s and 70s) mostly because they tend to shell out the big bucks for the best players, so it's more of a rooting for the underdog thing.

It is time this kind of stuff gets loud and proud and brought to the forefront so liberal idiots can see that this is how the corruptocrats get rich. It is so frustrating that this kind of stuff stays in the background so the average person isn't aware of it. Unless you are listening to Levin, you won't know about it.

Or how about Harry Reid's net worth of 43 Million. Once they get into congress and do their time, they are eligible for graft. If the Repubs would start a very loud investigation and the press would do their jobs....Oh, right, never mind. So, I feel so good about paying my taxes to these fers. St. Pauli Girl is still around but the adverts are gone. The tobacco companies do this with cigs. They decide which brands are worth promoting and the rest get no promotion dollars at all.
