A Smart History Blog

Mordecai Gist's Maryland Macaronis

Here's the story of one of Maryland's native sons who saved the Continental Army at The Battle of Long Island, and as such, perhaps we owe this entire nation we call the United States to his actions. Perhaps not, the fun thing about alternative history is that we don't know what would have happened if something changes, but he sure saved Washington's bacon that day. As for his Macaronis? Twelve out of the original 270 made it back to American lines, the rest either killed or captured. With their lives and freedom they bought a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. (Yes, I know that's from the Civil War. One of Gist's descendants, General States Rights Gist, was killed at The Battle Of Franklin, fighting for the Rebs. Gist's own sons were named Independent and States. I kinda miss 18th and 19th century patriotic naming conventions)

The FBI Lost Our Son

Unfortunately it's behind the WSJ's paywall, so I can't read it. Anyone have a link to a non-paywalled copy?

That's all I have. I'm sorry for the brief ONT, but I got distracted, I sat down to read a bit after dinner and time got away from me. I've recently become aware of what they call “HFA” fiction (humans, fuck yeah!), specifically The Deathworlders. It's a branch of si-fi that starts with the premise that humans are the best species in the galaxy (stronger, faster, smarter), and deals with our introduction to the rest of the universe. There's a rich tapestry of interwoven books, available serial style, but I'm not nearly to the end. Anyhow, I lost track of time. Does anyone else read these?

Tonight's ONT brought to you by strip clubs:

I think Colorado goes for Trump in 2020. He only lost there by 5% in 2016.

Trump also takes Minnesota (1.5%), Nevada (2.4%), Virginia (5.3%), Maine (2.96%), and New Hampshire (0.37%).

The communist, whoever it winds up being, likely keeps the Left Coast, the rest of New England (other than Maine and New Hampshire), Maryland, Delaware, and Illinois.

Not quite a Jimmy Carter or George McGovern level of curb-stomping, but it's going to be close.

114 So I got dragged into a conversation with one of the local Democrats. They're all Democrats here. This one was from NYC, 1970s vintage.

Donald Trump was a PoS, I'm told, caused a concrete shortage in New York, ran the city down 1970s-80s.

And I was told Trump was going to be impeached Nixon-style, with some Republicans telling him he'd have to resign.

I didn't live through NYC 1970s-80s except from what I read in NYC media. I got the impression that, yeah, Noo Yawkers didn't like the man.

As for impeachment drama: I got the impression this dude was still living in 1974. I think that if Romney, Lee, and Murkowski walked into the God Emperor's office and told him "you're going to be impeached", TGE will tell them "then do it, faggots". Good luck with THAT.

Posted by: boulder t'hobo at October 18, 2019 10:38 PM (ykYG2)

115 People like Katshit and Mitt Rattmy are always going to be thorns in Trump's side. The good news is that people EXPECT them to and thus, they don't move the needle towards impeachment.

Posted by: JoeF. at October 18, 2019 10:38 PM (o1fzk)

116 I think Colorado goes for Trump in 2020.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia (Russian Asset, also Spartacus) at October 18, 2019 10:01 PM (Do2h6)

I buy all of those except VA and CO. Colorado is sadly too infested with Californians fleeing the mess they made, in my opinion, and NoVa is a millstone around the rest of the state's neck.

But yeah, probably all the rest. Nevada might be a bit tough, depending on how much of Hairy Reed's machine is still in place, but certainly doable if Hispanics have swung Trump's direction as much as some polls suggest. And I'm fairly convinced he only lost NH in 2016 via fraud.

As for points south : I know that Nubia got a few raids from Ptolemaic Egypt but I don't know that it got anything out of the ordinary.

Best I can tell, what threw Nubia into oblivion was (1) the collapse of the Med economy, thanks to Khusro II and the Arabs and (2) Islam, which found Nubia as an admittedly-peripheral trade point, and converted Nubia into a big slave state.

Read Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities - if you didn't live in a building with a doorman, and you weren't dirt poor, you were getting the hell out of New York during the '70's - early '90's. Crime was ravaging New York, and the Left of course said that Nothing Could Be Done Until Capitalism Was Overthrown.

So, the voters elected Guliani, who brought in Bratton, and the rest is history.

Unfortunately, there is a new generation of voters who don't remember how bad New York was, and vote for people that are letting New York slowly slide back into the abyss.

208 Watching Tucker on delay, and he compared the Jan Brewer finger-wag to the brave little toaster finger-wag of Nancy.

And I was thinking about how my reaction didn't so wide.

For Brewer: she had a point to make and it's not so bad.
Nancy: who cares, she's a performer--am I surprised no.

And then I thought about why Trump tweeted this out. It's because Nancy and Shroomer stormed out of the meeting and flung their arms and said Trump had a melt down back in there!

Trump tweeted a picture that showed him and his staff calmly sitting listening to Nancy, who is up and on her feet and wagging her fingers. So the ENTIRE media lost the plot (Trump was a MANIAC!) and instead started lauding the Brave Little Toastette, Nancy Shrew.

Nancy is so proud of being a spectacle that she puts it as her Twitter background.

Again, the distractoids not only had a dramatically different reaction to disrespect to the "highest office in the land" but they FAILED. TO. FOLLOW. THE. CONVERSATION.

And these people are constantly telling me I should just let them make decisions for me. When they can't follow a damn conversation to save their lives.

297 Best wishes going out to all the 'Rons and 'Ettes at the Texas Momee!

Combines are running in the quarter right next to my house. Gets noisy when they pass. That's OK, they are doing the Lord's work.

I worked on my F150 today. Took the driver's door apart, in an effort to determine why the power window would not go down. Determined right away it was not the motor itself, as that ran fine, in both directions, when fed with power from a separate battery. Switch metered out OK, too. At least the funky pattern of closed and open contacts was the same for all 4 switches in the cluster.

One thing I did notice is that the "one touch" relay clicked every time I pressed the "down" button for the driver's door. Which indicated that the realy was seeing the contact closure (or open???) from the switch OK. Took the relay out, took off cover. It looked OK. Put it back in. Window went down, once. Then intermittently, or not at all. Took out relay, searched for a similar one in my relay drawer. Found an exact match, same Ford part number, even. Plugged that in, window works 100 percent. Problem solved.

While the door was apart, I replaced the scratched glass with a good pane. And got the door back together.

Went to drive it to town, battery was dead, from sitting all afternoon with the door open and the courtesy lights all on.

Oh well, that's what battery chargers are for.

Years ago, I bought a used Datsun Maxima. The cruise control no workee. The cruise throttle control was a vacuum diaphragm which was modulated by an electronic valve.

349 It is important to know that in the Pacific Northwest, salmon is considered an insult and unclean.

When my Louisiana anthropological research delegation observed the traditions of the indigenous population at the "Place of Fish Trading" in Seattle, we observed that no one would accept a salmon fish. It appeared that the lowest on the totem pole had the low social rank obligations of attempting to persuade foreign visitors to relieve them of this burden, for which they ask White People Money and apparently count coup.

Dog Fighting Breeder Found Tied Up and Beaten Pretty Bad By Masked Men

A 52-year-old Detroit man and suspected dog fighting breeder was reportedly outside feeding his dogs when he was confronted by three armed men wearing masks to conceal their identities.

The masked men forced him into his home where they ted him up before brutally beating and torturing him before cutting off his ear and driving away in his van.

--SNIP--

The men who tortured him have not been found and no arrests have been made.

Now there's a jury I'd want to be on. The defendants tortured, beat and maimed a fighting dog breeder? Not guilty by reason of Karma.

The government legalized production of hazi (home-made) palinka up to 50 liters per adult. Which means all the old ladies in the family, so effectively you can make as much as you want.

Quality varies, of course. I have had the pleasure of 15-20-27 year old hazi palinka, and it is fantastic. Typically 53% alcohol.

Most hazi is aged for maybe one-two years (it's very raw if not aged) and pretty ok. In most villages there is one "official" palinka maker. You bring or buy the fruit of your choice, pay a fee, and later you get your palinka. But many people still do it in the back garden.

My solving logic goes as follows:

Find all the blanks, or zeros as I dubbed them in the code. For each zero found, walk the row, column, and
3 x 3 submatrix and determine the possible values for that zero cell.

Now, once you've done that, check if there are any unique values, cells which can only be one number. If so, fill them in and iterate again.

Now, if you fall through that, reaching a case where you still have blanks, but each one has two or more possibilities, go to "mutual exclusion" search, I called it. Walk through each row and see if there such cases. If none found, look at columns, then submatrices.

Once you find some mutual exclusion cases, fill them in and iterate again, starting with looking for unique zeros again.

That has easily solved the first few "easy level" puzzles.

That's how I'm creating the input files. However, with the C runtime library "scanf" function, you seperate with white space, not commas like BASIC and FORTRAN's formatted input routines use.

You can easily modify it to use commas, but it adds complexity.

I'll be playing with it for the harder level puzzles later tonight. For the easy (2/5) level I was writing and debugging it with, it took 13 iterations to solve. Very fast. And that was mostly the unique value loop.

It went through 3 unique loops, then fell out. One mutual exclusion loop, then back to the unique loop which solved it. 13 total iterations.

I have completely finished the "mutex" loop function yet. The logic is, start with rows. If you get hits, replace and reiterate. If you don't get row hits, go to column hits. Then if that fails, go to submatrix hits. I haven't written the submatrix mutex yet (nothing but slight modifications of the row column).

So far, all it's needed is the row mutex loop.

402 Accountants used to do something called "casting out nines" to check calculations. This involves calculating the so-called digital root of the number, one method for getting it is to repeatedly add the digits in the number until it's reduced to a single digit.

Suppose you want to check that 123 + 456 = 579.

First number: add 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Single digit, stop.

Second number: add 4 + 5 + 6 = 15, then add 1+5 = 6. Stop.

Add 6 + 6 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3. This is the digital root of the left-hand side.

On the right-hand side (the sum), add 5 + 7 + 9 = 21, then add 2 + 1 = 3.

Both sides have a digital root of 3, so the answer checks. This works with all the basic arithmetic operations on integers.

Note that you can get a false positive if the erroneous value and the correct one are the same modulo 9, but that's only going to happen 1 time out of 9 on average.

You can immediately throw out any nine (or group of digits that sum to 9) without changing the result. For instance, in the second number you could have thrown out the 4 and the 5, and in the sum you could have thrown out the 9 (hence, "casting out nines").

418 The newest South Park mocked the Impossible burger. They switched all the cafeteria meat to "incredible meat" products. And Cartman was having heart attacks when they kept trying to have healthier food so they didn't tell him it wasn't real meat.

Then he met the guy that was selling the incredible meat, and he was cool with it. All because it was heavily processed lab created garbage, just like the stuff he likes. It's not healthier so he was happy and everyone else is just quietly looking down at their new "better" food.

420 Beyond Meat has had a terrible, no good week in the stock market. Go to any
upscale market and you will see the fake meat section is flooded with
competitors now. One thing I have never seen is anyone else buy this
stuff. I have tried a few Beyond products as well as the Impossible
burger from BK and another sit down place. I have checked on the
products and asked regional merchants about the sales. They say the
sales are good, but I have never witnessed any other person buy this
stuff in a super market.

The thing about
this is you can't predict whether it will collapse tomorrow or grow into
a significant market niche. In theory they could make the product
better. Also, you can't not judge Millennial power to ignore taste and
do what they think will save the planet. Hell, Boston Beer (Sam Adams)
freely admits ALL of their growth this year came from alcoholic water.
If that stuff can catch on, why not bad for you fake meat?
I
say don't listen to me, try it for yourself. Try an Impossible
Burger. But if you take a whiff, no chance you will think it reminds
you of meat. And the smell is not good.

The
product could be improved. It is not like Burger King employs a lot of
aspiring chefs. The Impossible Burger I had from a sit down place was
better for sure. But even then, it had some serious negatives. They
doused it with fake smoke and it did not sit well later.

Funny, they have halal fried chicken places all over that joint. Do they ask the proprietors of those locations their religious beliefs? I have nothing against the HFC's (yes, many are called that with no trademark issues). But fair is fair. Why not let the free market decide? Hell, the Dem leaders in NYC attacked Chic Fil A, but they lost. Too bad the Brits went wobbly so soon. I don't know a lot about the issue but if it is as bad as it seems, the US gov could probably get involved on a discrimination issue.

3 rough weeks. I had to spend a week in rehab to get strong enough to come home.
Slowly getting back to things.
PT is helping, but also hurtful. I took myself off the pain killers. All they seemed to be doing was making me constipated, and only letting me get about 2 hours of solid sleep each night.
I got off them and about 4 days later...it was like a fog had been lifted from my brain.

Posted by: Bruce at October 19, 2019 06:11 AM (vd8XM)

my point exactly. If you live in the South, they are ubiquitous. But there are so many regions of the USA that would support CFA expansion. The guys that went in for the UK attempt took on an added risk and got burned. I hope they press on but no way these nutters are going away. They don't believe in the free market or personal choice.

Whoever got the CFA franchise in the UK could have done better by trying it in parts of the USA that don't have the franchise. I am not saying back down. But any country that would allow lawless assaults on someone trying to do lawful business would not be my first choice as an entrepreneur
