An 84-year old retired police officer, military veteran, and school crossing guard in Massachusetts has had his firearms seized and was fired from his job after someone overheard a conversation at a diner and reported him as a threat to the local school. Stephen Nichols says he was talking with a friend at a local restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard when the subject of the local school resource officer came up. To recap:
1) Antifa-guy was hit by an SUV.
2) The SUV was riddled with bullets. No sign of the driver.
3) The Antifa-guy's two "friends" dragged him across the street, tossed him into the back seat of a car, and took him to the hospital, where he died. The cops briefly detained the two, and then released them.
And the interesting thing is that nothing public is happening.
The cops aren't talking, there have been no arrests, and the SUV driver still hasn't been found.
Portland Antifa, which normally would be screaming bloody murder about the racist system that kills their people, has been keeping very quiet. They have told their people not to talk to the media, and not talk to the cops - "don't let the pigs build cases", in their words. Antifa-guy's mother gave a statement yesterday, and reiterated that no one should talk to the media.
The two groups who know more about the case than is publicly known are the cops and Antifa itself (since Antifa has been able to talk to the guy's friends).
It is increasingly obvious that the facts of the case look very, very bad for Antifa - a drug deal gone wrong, perhaps. I would also bet a dollar that it will come out that the Antifa-people opened fire before the SUV hit Antifa-guy.
It has been noted that carrying concealed handguns and shooting at people is a new thing for Portland Antifa. Perhaps they are morphing into a regular street gang.

The only semi-useful part of USAToday was the sports section. Only semi-useful because it didn't have much if anything about West Coast games, because of their publishing time. That was pretty frustrating in the days before the InterWebs...you could lose a lot of your life waiting for ESPN to get back around to those baseball and basketball games if you just missed them in their scores/highlights rotation or on the scores chyron rotation.

Heh. I was cutting some sheet metal the other day, and had a couple of pieces about 6" by 20". If I bowed and wobbled them, they made a really loud high-pitched squeal. Not the sort-of-fake thunder sound you get from big sheets. It was weird. And very loud.

I've been to that show several times, although rarely went on the base. It used to be at the FW NAS, formerly Carswell AFB. (that was right in town, Alliance is up north of town near the Texas Motor Speedway) Just south of I-30 off the south end of the main runway, there's a hill with a strip mall on it. We would park in that parking lot because a friend told me that the pilots would use that hill to line up their approach to the runway, either for close flyovers or landings. He was right - they were so close that when they came over that hill, you could easily see the pilot sitting inside his canopy. It was a great spot.

For a 'gender studies professor', she sure don't know much. Probably has a PhD in it, too.
Here in MS, we are the fattest state in the nation. Something like 38% of the state is obese, and that would include me. But I'm tryin'. Down 42 pounds since the start of spring, I'm now a skinnier 218. And still shrinking. And a great big hat tip to Ace for suggesting and showing this was doable. Quite simply, I eat less and eat less often.
Now, MS has the highest black population in the nation, at around 38% of all residents. And my informal estimate is that at least one half of the black females here have a BMI of 30+. That trends with the NIH numbers.
Now, I'm not saying the white females don't have a problem with it too, but if I had to guess it woud be around 1/3.
And it's a cultural thing as well. You don't go anywhere without being offered food and/or drink. I'm pretty sure that's a nationwide thing, but it is especially prevalent here. ie, temptation is everywhere. It's darn near automatic to offer, and to accept. And it's the accepting that is part of the problem.

Solar panels are almost useless without battery storage, another big expense. Without batteries, you're sending juice to the electric company during the day when you need it least, and buying it back and more at night when you need it most.

Glad your wife's hip replacement went that well. I had one back in 2010 and it took a while before I got out of the hospital back then. Glad she is doing so well.

Aha! You are talking about emergency power, whereas I am talking about off-grid solar to run a normal household load.
And the climates in which solar can albeit at great expense, run a normal household load, tend to make A/C a necessity, not a luxury.
Using electric for un-heating, is, not surprisingly, about as power-intensive as is using it for heating.

More realistic, bunch of idiots out doing some minor crime, like dealing, someone gets paranoid, some threats, a pistol gets pulled, the driver panics and hits the gas, runs over antifa-speedbump, and his friends with no brains and low impulse control start popping off at the SUV.
then, panicking about having popped off, they don't call an ambulance but instead try to distance themselves from the crime and take their bud to bleed to death on the way to the hospital. The cops show up anyway and the whole group decides to shut up because they expect someone to go to jail.
So my question is what the hell is going on that there is a hail of gunfire in the bluest city in Oregon where the cops don't do anything about what fits the requirement for an attempted murder?

RV fridges used to be 3-way: propane, 120 volts from a hookup or generator, and 12 volts from a battery. Many are now just 2-way: propane, and 120 volts. You used the 12 volts while rolling down the road, and tow vehicle's alternator replaced the heavy drain on the battery from the 12 volt fridge. Now, I think they just leave the propane running while on the road.
RV battery is essentially just for lighting, and other small loads. The fridge will run it down fast.
If you will be boondocking a lot, get a generator that burns the same fuel as your tow vehicle. The new breed of small generators are very quiet.
Also replace incandescent and fluorescent lighting units in your trailer with LED lights. More light, less power consumption. Getting to be quite cheap, now.

After closing my bookstore, I treated myself to a Dell laptop. Sadly, the damn thing came with Windows 10 and enough bloatware to choke a mule. (photography lighting 101) So, if I take a screen capture and place it in photoshop, using the color picker the colors are indeed, very different. Put them in the same environment and yes, they're the same color. There's also this thing called simultaneous contrast I learned about in a Time/Life book when I was 7 back int the 60's. It's not a useless idea, but do please completely forego the idea of a "roof mount" installation. It'll be particularly useless on any kind of RV.
"Orientation" is critical to the panel's effectiveness. They're not going to let you "position" your 34 ft. H.R. in the R.V. park so as to allow your solar panels to "align" with the arc of the sun.
What you do, is get a two-panel rig, with correct wiring, with a Charge Controller to receive the initial power. This will regulate the power that feeds into your series paired, deep cycle 6v Golf Cart batteries. You can chase down details of that circuitry, but I'll not belabor it now.
Here's the trick though.
You mount those panels on a collapsible frame, made from 1"x2" clear pine, or 1"x1" aluminum square tube.
Base of the frame needs at least a pair of wheels on one side or another, as to make movement easier.
Park where you're directed to in the RV retreat.
Break out your collapsible frame, set it up with the solar panels, and manually orient it to the best arc of the sun, as relates to your particular coordinates.
You can aim for both Pitch and Azimuth, thus gaining the maximum effect from the panels.
And you won't need much beyond a 20 ft. extension cord, from trailer to panel, no matter where you're parked.
Your 34 ft. H.R. does have "basement" stowage, yes? Then, not a problem.
If no stowage, then wedge that assembly somewhere in the interior while on the "rolling on the road" segments of your journeys.
Roll it out into the open as part of your "set up" routine. And in no time, it'll devolve into a three minute part of your "Planting the Flag" process, in any park in which you may alight.

Hold the power button down til it comes on, then turn it off as soon as you see the Toshiba logo. Do that 2 more times, and it ought to do a disk repair, which is probably all it really needs.
If all you need is to get a few things off of it, give it a try.

Oh man, so sorry. I could do this for you in an afternoon and a couple of beers. Sadly, laptops are usually crap from the get-go, with few exceptions. Dell is particularly horrific, and I'd wager you've been given a stack of "restore" disks but no straight Windows 10 disk?
I can't offer any suggestions on the geek squad, but it's probably a good start. Maybe go onto Yelp and do a search for some smaller firms. If you don't have a bunch of crap already on it, it should be a straightforward thing and a quick solve, as long as you've not already installed a bunch of software.
I've got to replace my main drive (I've built my PC's since 2003), but with all the Adobe stuff installed (not cloud) it's going to be a major headache along with all the other software I need to replace.

Our daughter, who is pregnant with our 2nd grandchild, told me this baby is a parasite - one that she "cares about, though, but yeah."
I told her I had no words.
None that I think I can get away with saying without losing access to our grandchildren, anyway.
She said I should look up the definition of a parasite and learn something about science.
This is a woman who went through miscarriages and a blighted ovum before having her first child 4 years ago.
I so wanted to ask her why she and her husband were so upset about those lost children, if she really believes the child she is carrying is a parasite.
Also, will her co-workers be giving her a parasite shower? What, as a grandmother, do I buy for a parasite?
Also, since a parasite is usually a different species from its host, does she think her children are not the same species as she? This is a Labor & Delivery nurse, for heaven's sake.
My parents must be rolling in their graves, especially my mother, who my daughter claims she models herself after.
My very pro-life mother was a neonatal nurse. Their occupation would be the only thing they'd have in common anymore. That and my daughter is the spitting physical image of my mother, who was absolutely beautiful - which makes witnessing this sorry transformation even more painful.
This is what happened to my formerly very pro-life, pro-Second Amendment daughter - after going to college in Boston and marrying a liberal soy-boy whose parents interned for Congresscritter David Obey (Socialist - Wisconsin), and were big fundraisers for Scankles.
I don't know her anymore.
My poor grandsons. Dear God, what havoc will their parents inflict on them in their formative years?
I wish we didn't live 1500 miles away. But even if we were closer, we probably wouldn't be allowed to be alone with our grandchildren for very long. Our icky conservative values might infect them.
We will continue to do what little we can to influence our grandchildren but we have to be so careful with what we say. We never know what will set off our daughter and son-in-law, and we are worried they may cut off all access at some point if we piss them off too much.
Thank God for our son, who has kept his head on straight and never lets living in NYC sway his core beliefs.

I can't speak for all, but my giant pregnancy bumps did not jiggle, shift and bobble. Nor change shapes during the day. Or pop when I squatted down in heels to pet a rescue dog (first of all, show me any one with watermelon/ in my case a 10lb watermelon) squatting down in heels and getting up unassisted. A popping sound would be worrying, along with deflation and inflation. Seriously, there are photos. Once the bump, apparently became unhitched or she forgot to snap something, and almost fell out. I love this stuff, and it is bizarre.
I guess I like distractions from the impeachment reruns. Also, Archie baby is about 5 months old or so and neither parent know how to hold the poor child. I hope he gets teeth soon and is a biter.
I have learned all sorts of nasty things about her possible past as a yacht girl (I had never heard of this). She has climbed more than one pole, let's just say that (allegedly).

Suggestion: if it is just files you need off the laptop, get a bootable copy of Linux Mint on a thumb drive, and insert it in the laptop's USB port. Boot up the laptop, and do whatever command is required to interrupt the automatic boot sequence, and select another boot device. Usually, as it boots, you will see "press F11 to enter BIOS" or some such prompt. It might automatically boot to the Linux thumb, too.
Once Linux is running off the thumb drive, you can use its file commands to find your desired files on the C:\ drive, and copy them over to blank space on the thumb drive. Linux doesn't care if the OS on the hard drive is corrupt; it will still read the drive, if it is readable at all.
This is not hard to do. I am in no way a Linux geek, but I have installed it and used it that way with success. Linux Mint gives you a user interface that is very, very similar to windows. You really don't get into command-line stuff unless you want to add software, and when you do, there are plenty of tutorials on how to do it.

The programs I have on the stupid thing are easily replaced -- iTunes, subscription to Office, nothing that can't be reinstalled with little trouble.
What I need the old computer for us I have Fireworks installed on it. And, no, I can't simply move it because it's sort of not kosher. I love Fireworks because I used it for so many years to sell stuff on Amazon. I also have eighteen years worth of bookstore stuff on it. I can't install my version of QB on the Dell because a) it is no longer supported, b) there were so many upgrades over the years, a blank installation will not accept the updates, and c) I loaned the program to my daughter and can't get it back from her.
I suppose I will grit my teeth and actually buy a copy of Office.

As is usual with polls at this point in the cycle, they're not meant to reflect public opinion, they're meant to nudge and shape it. If they really believed internally that this had majority voter support, where's the full House roll call vote?

That used to be the case. Lately, with my providers (I have two) the IP changes every reboot. It depends how they are configured to accept your connection.
Business accounts typically provide static IPs and they charge about 3x the home rate. So they've "fixed" the problem of making addresses sticky. Google and FB don't rely on IPs to track you and they are providing data to FBI.

In almost all routers this is true. But in a few routers the address is fixed and does not change when rebooted. I know that mine have always done that.
