21 It is absolutely a zebra and a parachute. He's not lying.

The parachute figure is indistinct, but one way of looking at it is that the figure is slumped forward, held up from the middle of his back, and may be dead.

I think the zebra shot him.

The glorification of the industrial suggests late 30s or 40s. The bright sunlight suggests California.

The fact that the light on the zebra is coming from the left and the light on the cooling towers is coming from the right suggests that the artist is just fucking with us. Why?

Serious answer...Because the artist is a talentless hack whose basic skill at painting is the best it is going to get. He has no foundation in Western art, history, philosophy or religion, so his ideas spring from some silly and inconsequential place in his inferior brain.

It is amusing to look at...nothing more.

42 I look at this painting and a few of Christopher Wood's other works and my reaction is: who cares. There is nothing especially interesting in his use of color or subject. This one seems to make even less sense than some of his seaside paintings. If critics found his work noteworthy, I seriously question their judgement.

47 Ah, it's probably a metaphor about a referee (the zebra) looking the wrong way and missing the critical play (the murder of the pilot).

The little patch/box of food next to zebra maybe suggest's the zebra was paid not the notice. The setting in what looks like a parking garage also suggests a payoff since payoffs often occur in parking garages (in the literature at least).

89 a quote from Wood

"Dearest mother, you ask me what I am going to do: I have decided to try and be the greatest painter that has ever lived"

oy

The tragically short but majestic career of Christopher Wood produced an exquisite selection of lyrical, enigmatic, and luminous canvases. Tellingly, as a young man traveling through Europe in the early 1920s, Wood read and marveled over the collected letters of Vincent Van Gogh. Like Van Gogh, Wood experienced a level of over sensitivity and emotional inner turmoil that ultimately led to suicide. Before his sad death, Wood was a charming and flamboyant personality. He was one of few Englishmen who gained access to fashionable Parisian art circles; he met Pablo Picasso and Sergei Diaghilev, and became great friends with Jean Cocteau. Despite these lofty connections it was not until Wood returned to England, met the hard-working Ben and Winifred Nicholson, encountered the naive pictures of Alfred Wallis, and lived by the unpredictable sea, that he felt home and developed his own distinct and powerful style of painting.

90 Zebra is the German word for zebra, so maybe this is a commentary on the migration crisis.

Zebra in French is zebre. Italian is funny because the animal is a zebra but the pedestrian crossing stripes are called zebre.

It was the Switzerland comment that got me thinking about this. I haven looked up how to say zebra in Romansch.

And that was because of their crude parachutes. They hung from the riser with a forward cant, and upon landing they would have to do a forward roll. I did. Well, I DuckDucked it. Looks like the jury is still out, depending on whether you're considering their fur or their skin. Here's what the San Diego Zoo has to say:

Stripes: White with black or black with white?
This is one of the most-asked questions about zebras. So what's up with
the stripes? Zebras are generally thought to have white coats with
black (sometimes brown) stripes. That's because if you look at most
zebras, the stripes end on their belly and toward the inside of the
legs, and the rest is all white. However (there had to be a catch,
right?), some zebras are born with genetic variations that make them all
black with white stripes, or mostly dark with the striped pattern on
just part of their coats. And as it turns out, zebras have black skin
underneath their hair. So it depends on how you look at it!

He was such a carbuncle... I think we should be allowed to comment again, and again, and again.

Of the elder African Americans in Congress now, John Lewis I get - he took some major hits for civil rights. So far as I can tell, the rest of 'em are Reverend Jacksons: "Oh, I was there, but I did not do anything of note."

206 imo Cummings was too dumb to be one of evil's top men. The manipulative puppeteers are more diabolical and sinister. But Cummings certainly seemed happy to leave "his people" suffering, while he got rich, and it doesn't take brains to know better.

I can't judge where he will end up, but there is some OT verse about "seeing the reward of the wicked", and I think there is a NT version of that as well, kinda like we will see the trial of those that caused us pain.

On the other hand, Trump's idea of revenge for evil acts also has merit. It is not an eternal judgement, but a practical worldly justice. Government should impose it on criminals, but if that fails, it is up to the citizenry, or the individual. The founders agreed to be rebels, after all, and started a revolution. We need a few good men.

Explain that the person is not well, and that part of that includes that the person will respond poorly to being confronted about it, so it may be best not to.

You know, once upon a time I would've said just tell the 5 year old that the he/she isn't normal, but it's impolite to point/stare/whatever, the same way you'd advise them about someone who's morbidly obese, severely disabled, whatever. But now, I think one of the reasons why society is going down the shitter is that we're so afraid of being "impolite" that we don't call out the cancerous insanity that is killing the body politic.

good one. That whole sprinkling with a little water thing, or open confessions to men down by the river .... I think God does a more full audit of the heart. It is not just a simple "I got this guy saved cuz I got him emotional for a day and he 'accepted the Lord', aren't I great for getting him saved" ... kinda deal.

And certainly not ritual attendance or repetition of chants. imo the institution side of "The Church" is parallel to the institution side of government. The life is in the local gatherings and good men/women that don't usually get the highest praise. New life should probably not be put in the old wine skins, institutions of fossilized dogma. ymmv

Mrs. JTB has to be careful about too much sun exposure. She uses shirts, hats, and jackets by Solumbra which blocks most rays beyond just the cloth. Duluth Trading has a similar line.

Lots of people keep working because they're afraid of retirement, and with good reason. Plenty of cases of these kinds of people who die shortly after retiring.

Staying in the job can keep you going. I don't think malicious intent towards the Republic is necessary to explain this behavior.

Sometimes focusing on the real issue help one to focus. It sounds to me like the real issue here is the relationship between youngest and eldest kidlet, and your quite correct desire for peace between them. So perhaps the younger one might be able to understand that "you just let this go without saying anything because it upsets your older sibling, and life is hell for all of us when you two are fighting."

I've seen a lot of that in private businesses, and the men I know who've done that appear to me to have been those who completely self-identify by the Job they hold. With no job, they have no identity, and feel lost, so they cling to it until their very last breath.

I more identify with my Dad. He had worked for 40 years as a Pharmacist, he liked it but the day came when he had his fill of working every day, and he retired. My mom got sick of him hanging around the house and tried to convince him to go back to work part time. I'll never forget that he said to her "you know, if we really need money that bad, I think I'll just go pick up cans on the side of the road."
