The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Brexit was an honorable, reasonable political stance taken by a majority of the voters in the United Kingdom. It is a testament to the failures of modern politics, and the incredibly mediocre politicians that we in the West have been burdened with that they dithered and obfuscated and subverted and plain-old lied for more than three years. Had they simply obeyed the will of the people, the United Kingdom would have been done with the temporary dislocations and it would now be business as usual. But the scurrying rats in Parliament and the EU fascists would have none of that. They had to protect their sinecures and their political power, and the will of the people be damned!

Britain clinches Brexit deal, Johnson now faces parliament hurdle

Reasonable people can disagree about Brexit. But the demonization of its supporters was and is vile. The political philosophy of the nation-state is an old one...tried-and-true, and it would be a difficult philosophical argument to make that it is not the highest expression of human freedom and liberty. That so many of our elites feel just the opposite is an indictment of our educational systems and their intellects. But mostly their intellects.

Any casual observer of the human condition must arrive at the conclusion that we desire freedom and autonomy. How they fool themselves into believing that they are the philosopher kings, and only their wisdom and guidance will lift us from the muck is beyond me.

But the indications are good that the United Kingdom will be able to extract itself from most of the onerous, anti-freedom regulations and control of the EU, and that is a good start.

You know when a deal is reached? When everyone involved is done signing. Until then....nothing is really happening.

26 I see a lot of parallels between Brexit and Trump.

All the smart people knew that both Brexit and Trump could never be popular enough to win in the relevant vote. And both Trump and Brexit did win anyway, because they represent something much more fundamentally true to the people doing the voting than the people claiming to represent them. And in both cases, the smart set are doing their darnedest to prevent the will of the people, even after the people gave a clear message.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously at October 17, 2019 11:07 AM (KUaJL)

27 I am pro-Brexit for a number of reasons, and I re-congratulate Britain for staying out of the Euro in the first place.

But the quaint British tradition of governing on a nod, a wink, and the honor system has failed here. Yes, there was a referendum and a small majority voted in favor of Brexit, so that's the "will of the people".

There's no provision in the UK Constitution for using a referendum for that purpose. Rock paper scissors would be just as constitutionally valid since they haven't written things down.

If I were anti-Brexit, I would say that vox populi on one particular day a few years ago is not necessarily vox dei.

the ridiculous thing is that Parliament *should* call a snap election, since they've already shown they have no confidence in Boris and he's kicked 20 members out of his party - BUT they know that a whole lot of them will lose their seats in any new election, so they refuse to call it.

And even though they hate Boris, there's no mechanism to force a PM to resign, except to call a new election.

61 I have not posted this in a bit. As time goes by it has been getting a bit rattier:

Predictions for someone to google and point to and say what do YOU know anyway:

Won't make it to Iowa:

Marianne Williamson (ultimate vanity candidacy, she won't be able to qualify for the ballot)
Wayne Messam (Who? Exactly)
Tulsi Gabbard (she's burned too many bridges)

Drops after Iowa:

John Delaney (self funded vanity)
Andrew Yang (self funded vanity)
Julian Castro (old, old news)
Amy Klobuchar (last finisher for the women)
Kirsten Gillibrand (next-to-last finisher for the women)
Seth Moulton (maybe - he might not get to Iowa, candidacy doesn't have any reason for being. Against the Iraq War? So was/is Trump.)
Eric Swalwell (candidacy is to troll Trump - a costly way to do it)
Jay Inslee

Drops after NH:

John Hickenlooper (honestly I just needed to put someone here)

Drops after SC:

Beto O'Rourke (he can fund himself past a poor showing in Iowa, and the big dropout after Iowa will make him look like a mover until he gets to SC)

Drops after Super Tuesday:

Elizabeth Warren (nobody really likes her anyway - Super Tuesday will demonstrate that definitively)
Cory Booker (he will already be reeling from going nowhere with the black vote in SC)

That will leave the field with this:

Joe Biden
Pete Buttigieg
Bernie Sanders
Kamala Harris

Bernie will run to the convention regardless of where he is. But he is already done.

Now here it gets tricky - Harris I don't think can win but the Dems can't let the last candidates all be white men. UNLESS - she drops out, immediately endorses Biden, and Biden says, immediately, I will be glad to have her on my ticket when we get to the convention. Despite the fact I think he won't win, this might actually make him win. If those campaigns are too bitter with each other to do that, that only leaves one candidate:

Buttigieg

Farage is wrong on this deal not being a true Brexit ... it's true it's not the completely clean break that a No Deal Brexit would give, but that's letting the Perfect be the enemy of the Good.

The Remainers are pissing themselves over this deal (which they were sure could never be negotiated) . If it passes, the UK will be out of the EU (though Northern Ireland will have a slightly odd status for at least a bit, but it already does anyways).

They aren't fooling themselves. They are trying to fool others. They create their own power by taking it from others. This leads to their own personal wealth and prosperity because they create their own agency and industry. If others benefit, that could be a reasonable side benefit, but the intent isn't really to help others; the intent is to help themselves first and foremost and any other benefit is purely coincidental or political.

It's is very analogous to Trump - the Ruling Class figured that they were so powerful that the peasants would dare not challenge them.

And, like Trump, the hatred is directed at the people who voted for Leave - these peasants who live in the poorer parts of England, who fail to realize that pursuing policies that benefit only wealthy people in London is the only acceptable political outcome.

114 "Any casual observer of the human condition must arrive at the conclusion
that we desire freedom and autonomy. How they fool themselves into
believing that they are the philosopher kings, and only their wisdom and
guidance will lift us from the muck is beyond me."

We do have leaders, and our Republic established a system that would check and balance their power via voting and 4 branches of government (if we include "We the People" as the most powerful "branch"). Convincing the voting public has always involved deception, and now with Google and 5G spying, they intend to brainwash and/or censor us all. "Leaders" sold us out to corporatism.

That left/right continuum, is maybe better understand as "for the people, against the people" continuum. An aristocracy with a good king (serving his people) could be more free (right wing?) than a farce of a Republic that is really controlled by a DeepState mafia.

"Right" is respect for sovereign rights before God, with a lot of law to enable that. "Left" is no respect for the individual, who will be sacrificed (by the state) at will, to protect the power of the state (its hierarchy coming first). Leftist laws are not to protect the sovereign citizen rights (guns), they are to control the citizen (take his guns, stop his speech).

Our Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights is protecting the individual rights FROM the government. Other governments OWN their citizens, and laws corral them into service to the state. That is left versus right ... a continuum that doesn't circle to join Fascism and Communism ... those are both leftist.

140 Scotland came close several years ago, before they came to their senses and realized that their sugar daddy lay to the south, and upsetting that would have been catastrophically bad for their welfare state.

And there are a whole lot of Scots in the UK political class (like Tony Blair) who have no intention of limiting their ambition to Edinburgh.

Letting Scotland devolve would be the best possible outcome for English - it would move English politics sharply to the right - which is why the Scots backed off, of course.

This has always been a big part of the issue. And it's an anti-competitive landscape. In the US, if a state neighbors a high-tax state, they can lower taxes and draw business away - not so in the EU.

That way they can keep everyone on the same page, protect economies and sectors they want protected, etc.

If Britain is free to set its own tax policies, they are free to compete against the EU (read: Germany).

249 If Rutgers prof published this paper, then Rutgers prof at some point thought "hey, know what is a good thing to study? Obesity rates in Trump's presidency."

But it gets worse. Not only did Rutgers prof have to think that that was a good and worthwhile and noble use of time that will contribute favorably to the sum of human knowledge, but they almost certainly filed for grant money from the government to do the research. So not only did Rutgers prof think that, but people in the US government thought it was a good enough idea to throw money at.

If this doesn't illustrate all that is evil and wrong in academia, then I have an academic paper that I'd love to publish that you should fund for me.

You're right. It was several of the CBC who made the claim and it was reported by others that Cummings participated in the charge, but I found a correction made (via The American Thinker) that Cummings himself did not make the spit claim even though he was an active participant in punishing the Tea Party and protecting the IRS.

So my charge over the expectoration was, if not wrong, incomplete. But he did support denigrating and silencing the Tea Party.

Cocaine Mitch and the Senate R's are signaling that they think this is coming by year end.

But it can't get to the Senate with out a House vote.

So why would the Dem moderates be on board with an Impeachment vote and not an impeachment inquiry vote?

Is Mitch calling her bluff?

My guess is she does have the votes, but not the crime. So they have to manufacture one behind closed doors and rush a vote before anyone gets a chance to read the charges.

News: Club for Growth going up with TV ads calling Romney a "Democrat secret asset" who is "'plotting to take down President Trump with impeachment"

. . . .

"Slick, slippery, stealthy: Mitt Romney had us fooled. Posing as Republican, he tried to infiltrate Trump's administration as Secretary of State," says the commercial, referring to the president's past consideration of Romney to be his secretary of state.

"Now his cover's blown - exposed by news reports as a Democrat secret asset," the ad's narrator says. "Sources say Romney's plotting to take down President Trump with impeachment."

The commercial concludes with a call to action.

"Tell Romney, quit colluding with Democrats on impeachment," the narrator says, as the senator's office phone number flashes on the screen.

I've been a fan of Moanin' for a long long time. I saw Blakey with one of his last groups featuring Bobby Watson and Bill Pierce. Unfortunately his hearing was pretty well gone and he had to have the bass cranked really loud to make sure he was on the beat.

The Jazz Messengers were a training ground for talented young musicians and Blakey developed them well with each version having its unique personality. Blakey's drumming helped my early appreciation of Monk on The Black Lion Sessions.

If you ever get a chance, listen to the complete Herbie Nichols recordings on Blue Note. Blakey drums on the earlier sessions and Roach on the latter. I'm interested in your reaction.

I dunno - as a student of history I'm of the opinion that humanity actually defaults and generally prefers a very much top-down hierarchy that features strict behavioral controls with little freedom and autonomy. Not everybody of course but a big majority anyway. Quite simply humans like being told what to do.
