Revoke My Moron Card If You Must: The Nutty Buddy
[Bitter Clinger]

Your regularly scheduled Fishing ThreadTM will return anon...

But in the meantime, try this on for size!

Nutty Buddy.jpg
Let me start by saying this, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey goes against everything I stand for as a bartender and is symbolic of everything wrong with the alcohol industry.

Flavored whiskies are nothing new, Yukon Jack and Southern Comfort have been around since before I was able to have a drink, but at least they had restraint in tainting the flavor of what might ordinarily be a passable whisky given enough barrel time and care.

But since the turn of the 21st century the whisky industry has suffered self-inflicted indignity, with Red Stag, Jack Daniel's Honey, Crown Royal Apple, Rock and Rye, flavored whiskies that don't add slight accents to whiskey, but instead have all the subtlety of a Washington D.C. Womyn's March. And don't even get me started on Crown Royal Maple, it's not even fit for pouring on French Toast, if you were so inclined. And the blasphemy of blasphemies, the armageddon of the cocktail culture that has forever ruined the bar business, is that blend of formaldehyde and cinnamon that is Fireball, rife with the artificial taste of cinnamon flavoring, table sugar and regret.

And so that brings me to Skrewball, which I reluctantly purchased from the liquor store this week, cloaked like Ted Kaczynski hoping to avoid detection by my liquor store clerk out of sheer embarrassment. But I had to get some, because it's trending and I have to stay on top of trends, however insidious they might be. But there arose a problem after my purchase. As much as I wanted to despise it....it actually tasted pretty good. Not good like a 12 Year Redbreast Irish Whiskey. Not good like a bottle of 15 year Chivas.

But it tasted good nonetheless, like the way Krystal burgers taste good at 3 a.m. after a drinking binge. Good like a Reese's Cup stolen from your child's Trick or Treat bag might be.

And so I decided I must create with it. And so I submit to you, fully prepared for ridicule, The Nutty Buddy.

1 oz. Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey
.5 oz. Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur
.5 oz. Homemade Irish Cream (Bailey's will do if you don't make it yourself)
1 Large Scoop of French Vanilla Ice Cream

Blend 3-5 seconds until smooth and garnish with chocolate shaving and crushed peanuts.

6 My favorite flavored liqueur is Grande Marnier, but I also love a good Irish Mist.. slightly sweet.
I'm a big fan of Southern Comfort, and a SoCo Manhattan is my favorite if done right. Too sweet for most folks,, but I like a sweet Manhattan.

11 Enjoy making cocktails with my wife on the weekends (not called Sidecar Sunday without reason...) - coworker mentioned the Boulevardier, gave it a spin, since I had some old Campari in the pantry. Differing ratios of whiskey to vermouth/Campari, tried 1.5 oz whiskey and 1 oz Campari and sweet vermouth, but preferred 2 oz whiskey, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz vermouth. Generous on the orange peel twists too. but nice drink - in the rotation for me.

You don't drink to get drunk. You drink to appreciate the drink itself. Sure, a slight buzz is nice, but a good cocktail isn't about getting hammered. A gin and tonic on a hot afternoon, the pairing of bourbon and a cigar, a good red wine with pasta on a date... these are all sensual experiences.

I've never done any of that drink-to-be-drunk stuff. I mean, I work with computers, I experience involuntary loss of control daily. But really good liquor is something you can savor. Most (not all) beer is an acquired taste at best, but a good whisky (like the aforementioned The MacAllan) is a unique pleasant flavor you can sip while pretending to be sophisticated. I do not do mixed drinks, other than really simple ones like rum and coke.

In the past month I cut way, way back on the drinking, from nightly to weekly. I was definitely heading the wrong way.

to each his own. Some folks simply do not drink. I'm okay with that. One of my brothers has never gotten drunk. Ever. Fortunately me and my other brothers have made up for that deficit in our clan's heritage.

Sad part is, said teetotaler brother is a scold, and gets all purse-lipped and frowny at weddings and wakes. he's a hoot and a half.

I actually admire people who can easily avoid certain vices. Ted Nugent, for example, does not drink. Nor does President Trump. Both are very good at what they do.

My brother, though, I truly believe needs to get drunk. Might loosen him up a bit.

Cheers.

112 Southern Comfort, I believe, is a liqueur and not a flavored whiskey. I learned this to my detriment in college, when BFF and I would pool our money and buy SoCo thinking it was whiskey. And then we would vomit.

Thirty years later we get together for an event and go booze shopping. There's a new thing called The Knot, which is Irish and has all sorts of Celtic nonsense on the bottle. And it's 100 proof. I thought what a great idea to take Irish whiskey and make it stronger.

And the label was, well, perfect. "If you open this bottle you consent to drink it straight and not mix it with fruity things like a twit. Also you will sip it and not do shots". And so on.

So we get it, we drink it, it's interesting, but after a while it gets sweet. How does whiskey get sweet? Now it's cloying, the sugar has piled up. What's going on?

You guessed it. It's a liqueur. Thirty years later and fooled again.

The metric system?

The metric system is an excuse for the Euroweenies to screw you out of approximately 7% of the volume you expect in a bottle and charge you the same amount or more because it is imported!

Note that neither 12 oz or 11.2 oz converts to any "reasonable" number in metric!

I can vouch for that. Some years back I was at some music function. I'm not a regular beer drinker, but for some reason that night the beer keg was tasting exceptional, so they were going down. Meanwhile, 3 chicks asked if I wanted to do shots, and my weakness was always chicks bearing shots, because when a chick asks if you are a god you say yes. It was that peppermint schnapps type stuff, but purple in color. A fuck ton of shots later with the beer all in between I was wrecked. The wife eventually meets me there, sees me sitting in a chair and asks, "What the hell happened to you?" She says I blurted out "purple". Yeah, it was a fun next day. 324 The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits state that bourbon made for U.S. consumption must be:

Produced in the United States
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
Aged in new, charred oak containers
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)
Entered into the container for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)
Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume)

Bourbon has no minimum specified duration for its aging period. Products aged for as little as three months are sold as bourbon. The exception is straight bourbon, which has a minimum aging requirement of two years. In addition, any bourbon aged less than four years must include an age statement on its label.

Bourbon that meets the above requirements, has been aged for a minimum of two years, and does not have added coloring, flavoring, or other spirits may be - but is not required to be - called straight bourbon.

Bourbon that is labeled as straight that has been aged under four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.

Bourbon that has an age stated on its label must be labeled with the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle (not counting the age of any added neutral grain spirits in a bourbon that is labeled as blended, as neutral-grain spirits are not considered whiskey under the regulations and are not required to be aged at all).

Bottled-in-bond bourbon is a sub-category of straight bourbon and must be aged at least four years.

but warm beer beats the fuck out of no beer.

this is no shit: back in my misspent ute, when i was in a Mech Infantry company, i'd go to AT with a ruck full of clean undies, socks, etc, various necessary accoutrements, a duffle bag full of TA-50, and another one with 4 or 5 cases of canoe sex beer in cans.

they would rid around on top of the 113, right behind my driver's hatch, and every evening, as i was walking around barefoot, doing maintenance on the track, i'd have a few, and a few more with chow.

everyone was like "how can you drink warm beer?" my reply was "what kind of beer are you drinking?"

"i don't have any"...

341 Old fashioned whiskey flavors often came from a true infusion, which meant that "some stuff" had laid in the barrel for a while. Sometimes these did not carry a heavy sugar penalty. True liqueurs, as far as I can tell, always had a lot of sugar syrup going on. Bitters and "stomachics" are sugary, although recipes often call for only a few drops. Sad to note, the newer fruit-flavored whiskies usually have fruit syrup.

If you are on a strict diet, or are at the stage of diabetes where you still accomplish some of your blood sugar levels with diet (truly "hopeless" diabetics can eat sugar, because they just shoot more insulin), you're going to want to avoid these.

You can make a simple syrup with a superfine fake sweetener called Swerve, and it will not taste like saccharin from the 50's. I make some shake drinks that involve a half-shot (maybe 20% of the total drink) of Campari, or Solerno, and have tested to see that they don't cause a blood sugar spike if you have have one or two. This would include Old Fashioneds, Manhattans (watch out for those damn cherries), or Cocchi Americano. But all those scrumptious new whiskeys that have apple, orange, cranberry, or cherry are pretty much right out. Just too much sugar, and it's not like they're going to make a "diet" version.

I've found that most diet tonics are really good, but you never hear of a bar stocking them. And a lot of "gourmet" tonic is real syrupy.
