October ONT

October! October means Halloween. Halloween means costumes, and I have to say, I like this kid's style:

PDoctor.jpg

PUCK!

October also means hockey is back! The NHL season opened last night, with the Golden Knights avenging their playoff collapse to the Sharks. St. Louis started its cup defense on the wrong foot by losing in OT to the Craps, and the AHL affiliate up north in oil town surprising got the better of the Vancouver Canucks. All that is prologue, however, and the real action starts tonight at 9ET with the mighty Flames in Denver to meet the Avs. GFG!

Speaking of title defense, this is awfully sweet.

Blues surprise super fan Laila Anderson with hand-delivered Stanley Cup championship ring

A sick little girl whose determination and support inspired an unlikely group of hockey players to hoist Lord Stanley's cup last year got a little surprise from the team this week.

Wherefore By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

-Matthew 28 19-20

For those of you that don't know the story, Dallas police officer Amber Guyger shot and killed Botham Jean last year when she mistakenly went into his apartment and thought he was an intruder. This week she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the crime. The victim's brother was allowed to give a victim impact statement, and in this most trying circumstance, the glory of Christ shone through him like a beacon. This man is walking the walk:

Hero

As long as we're quoting the bible, might as well visit the gospel of John:

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

-John 15:13

15-year-old dies protecting little sister during burglary, police say

Kyhler, when the moment came, you were not found wanting. She's safe, you can rest in peace.

The Ugly American

Please America, take Meghan Markle back

No, what Meghan has done is drag with her, across the Atlantic, a garbage truck full of the most emetic US wokeness and deposited it on our front lawns. She has brought with her the infantile identity politics of Hollywood and US campuses, with all its non sequiturs, its bizarre obsessions, its mutual contradictions and its self-evident hypocrisies.

Not A Lot Of Locational Mobility Going On Here

Yesterday, the president made what has to be one of his greatest troll tweets of all time:

Wait, what's that you say? You can't see anything? Well, that's because the video featured an (altered) 10 second clip from a Nickleback video. Nickleback complained about it and Twitter removed it for “copyright violations”. This proves two things:

#1 The president has somehow made Nickleback relevant again, which I would have bet would never have happened in a million years, and

#2 Of course this strategy worked, and nobody could remember seeing the video an of course nobody retweeted it. LOL, J/K! You'd think these jackasses would be familiar with the Streisand effect. Here's an example:

I read somewhere that someone once postulated that the internet reacts to censorship as damage and attempts to route around it. I think this is true.

Tonight's ONT is brought to you by the comments section:

Since they didn't know the skin color of Cheddar Man, they simply made the politically correct assumption regarding skin color.

Because all of our ancestors were actually black, including the ones who evolved in places with little sun and lots of rain. Ireland used to be inhabited solely by black people.

101 53 Is that DNA story for real?

Yeah, it's for real. It's of interest because the
'Bell Beaker' lads - now agreed to be the Celts - almost wiped out the indigenous peoples of Britain. I am mostly Celt, as are all Britons and Irish. (The Saxons and Normans by the time they got to the Isles were ALSO already heavily Celt, from the mainland. Norse, less so.)

But as invasions go, sometimes a few locals dodge the massacres and rapes, and survive to pass on their genes.

They have found actual "mummies", preserved in peat bogs, whose skin has been stained chocolate brown by the humic acids in the bog. So, I think it has become sort of a convention to depict (heh) ancient Britons as brown skinned. And even if quite white, a life spent entirely outdoors in the Sun and wind, and dirt would quickly make them pretty tanned.

137 Since they didn't know the skin color of Cheddar Man, they simply made the politically correct assumption regarding skin color.

Cheddar Man's genetics don't have the whiteness genes we have. That much is true. The baseline for out-of-Africa is East African with a miniscule amount of Neander. Also true.

But since Cheddar Man is... well, mostly extinct; it's difficult to say if he'd had *other* genes, since lost, which would lower the melanin and allow for more Vitamin D capture. (Or is it A? Can't be arsed to look it up)

I've always figured the old European Hunter Gatherers to be like Conan. Blue eyes, straight black hair, dark-ish skin, will drive his enemies before you and hear the lamentations of your women.

139 But wait! The Fount of Truth, The Guardian, explains that Cheddar Man really was black!

It was initially assumed that Cheddar Man had pale skin and fair hair, but his DNA paints a different picture, strongly suggesting he had blue eyes, a very dark brown to black complexion and dark curly hair.
...
The results pointed to a Middle Eastern origin for Cheddar Man, suggesting that his ancestors would have left Africa, moved into the Middle East and later headed west into Europe, before eventually crossing the ancient land bridge called Doggerland which connected Britain to continental Europe. Today, about 10% of white British ancestry can be linked to this ancient population.

Posted by: The ARC of History! at October 03, 2019 10:27 PM (I2/tG)

140 That Cheddar Man illustration shows how the woke antiracists have wound up making themselves racist again.

I can remember, back in the benighted 1970s, looking at older books in the library which depicted "primitive cavemen" as brown-skinned. Because up to the 1960s or so there was a lingering association of brown = primitive. No science behind it, just the default assumption of white folks everywhere.

I can remember in the enlightened 1980s, seeing depictions of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon inhabitants of Europe as light-skinned, more or less like their contemporary descendants. This was to show that race and material culture are unrelated. Which is true, by the way.

Now, in order to be woke, the artist has to depict a 9000 year old person who lived in England as African-brown, because apparently showing ANY historical figures as white nowadays is racist. This is now considerably worse than the unconscious, unthinking racism of my childhood years: the artists are being deliberately false in their depiction of ancient Britons, and -- worst of all -- they've cycled back to the old PRIMITIVE PEOPLE ARE BROWN-SKINNED trope.

Next they're going to be putting on minstrel shows in order to celebrate black contributions to American culture.

184 The medieval plague doctor costume made me remember a kindergarten Halloween party a couple of decades ago, when the eldest T. kid was still shorter than her parents. The girls in the class dressed as:

Princess Sleeping Beauty, Fairy Princess, Mermaid Princess, Princess Jasmine . . . and HISTORICALLY ACCURATE 14th-CENTURY PRINCESS. Guess which one was my kid.

(Oh, and the boys in the class were dressed as Superhero, Soldier, Construction Worker, and Cop, because gender identity is baked into every fucking cell of their little bodies no matter what a bunch of perverts are trying to convince us.)

I have mulled that for a while, and I think she is more right that she thinks.

The list of things I truly care about is small and getting smaller. Whatever anybody else does isn't on that list.

And in general, if there's nothing I can do about it, there's really no reason to care about it or even give it much thought.

264 How do they know Cheddar Man's skin tone from his skeleton and DNA?

The Guardian:

For skin tone, there are a handful of genetic variants linked to reduced pigmentation, including some that are very widespread in European populations today. However, Cheddar Man had "ancestra" versions of all these genes, strongly suggesting he would have had "dark to black" skin tone, but combined with blue eyes.

Let's just say the scientists had strong incentives to portray Cheddar Man as black as possible, given the available genetic evidence.

Many if the ancient bodies have been preserved in bogs where the tannin in the water has died their skin dark brown, sorta like putting a piece of paper in tea and leaving it for a week. That's what is being illustrated here. From what I remember, Cheddar Man was bones and they discovered his direct descendant from DNA. No skin was involved.

Since they didn't know the skin color of Cheddar Man, they simply made the politically correct assumption regarding skin color.

Talk to an actuary. The Queen Mother (also an Elizabeth), lived past 100 years. So did Victoria. Womenfolk in that family tend to be very long-lived. Menfolk, not so much. Of course, Prince Philip is still looking at the grass from the top side, and Chuck gets some of his DNA there, so it's anybody's guess at this point.

304 Here is probably part of why Nickelback is reviled. They did extensive research on what is needed for a hot song and that is what ended up being "How You Remind Me." So it has all those hit song triggers in it that might cause you to have a backlash from its "insidiousness."

https://youtu.be/sfzvGG1O-_c

Oh and you'll notice that the video is a "reissue" because they had to strip out the nickelback songs they originally had in the video. So their copyright complaint to the tweet may actually be them being legitimate dicks rather than just being #orangemanbad dicks.

Depends on the locality. They love us here, for the most part. ARES is like any other organization, though. Some local groups are good others aren't, so that has an effect on how the local/state EMA views and uses them. The group discussed in the video isn't ARES affiliated, it's just the local hams that set up a system for their area. If you read the .pdf linked at the vid, they give real world examples of how their system has been useful with previous fires.

I was watching an episode of M*A*S*H recently where Col Potter was portrayed teaching young Korean women about the child birthing process. It included an actor playing a Korean translator, taking everything the Colonel said and re-saying it in Korean.

Something tells me the "translation" wasn't really accurate. Here's how I remember the dialogue:

Col: "By this time the contractions will be really intense."

Translator: "Ooga booga!"

"You should push as hard as you can, it won't be long until the baby starts coming out of the birth canal."

"Wooly bully shimmy shimmy koko bop!"

"Finally the miraculous moment arrives, and your baby is born."

"Konichiwa sushi!"

It's more hours to spend of liaisoning and coordinating with people I don't need, and I'm on salary so I don't get paid for the overtime required.

Some ARES guys are like: "Well, someday we'll have an emergency where all the cellphones and landlines and internet are down, and then they'll want us. I run tube rigs because they are immune to nuclear attack."

I tell them, if the situation is that dire, probably the last thing people are going to be thinking about is "communicating."

I've read where some ARES guys working drills get stuck in the corner on their own isolated kiddie-table intranet, logging calls, and the pros don't even look at their logs.

Our local ARES group is desperate to recruit hams. I told them no, because I don't have any people skills, which would definitely be essential when trying to help people who obviously don't want my help.

I have fond memories of MASH growing up. I remember in the grade school paper a Korean-AMerican kid chastised us for watching it. He said it was full of sterrotypes. Maybe it was but was that kid living in Korea during the Korean War?

The thing about Mash is that while a good show, with some good actors, it was likely the most anti American and anti military show that every lasted in the USA. The Generals and Colonels were buffoons and war mongers, other than Col. Potter. Even with Col. Potter, he joked about a getting a Purple Heart when his still blew up.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good series with good acting. I still watch it to this day. But it is shocking the level of anti Americanism. They all admitted that the show was really about Vietnam and not Korea. In fact, no way people would have acted that way in the Korean War as most were proud and gung ho.

It is also interesting that Hawkeye from the original MASH book was a patriot. And finally, it becomes a joke at some point for anyone who has spent time in So. CA. The entire thing was shot int he hills of SoCal. It stands out if you are looking for it.

Phoenix channels DeNiro from King Of Comedy and Taxi Driver both; his Joker is now solidly in the top three with Ledger and Hamill. (Forget it, Jack; you've been demoted to the "camp" tier.) It was also a nice in-joke that Phoenix has DeNiro's character Murr-AY as his lodestone.

If we ever do have a major major disaster where amateur radio is definitely needed, I hope the amateurs have the generators and fuel and cold-weather preparedness that they would need to be able to help. DC used to be different. Yes they were liberal and Demo, but they did not live that way. You go the the Whole Foods in Austin and it is full of hippies In DC, there are no hippies, they don't exist. The Dems only wanted power but they lived as conservatives. Only recently have you seen a change. They make a point of their leftyness this is something new. My guess is they have decided the tipping point has come. They can go full left now and pretend it was not another way. This is new to the DC area, but it sucks ass.
Only since Trump have Republicans stopped putting up their signs. They hide and check their views. That is new in DC.. I am sure it is the same around the country. When you have half a population scared of putting a s\ticker out or saying their piece in public, that is dangerous.

I made it 19 years between OG excursions, being trapped into the most recent about two years ago.

My impressions:

The breadsticks were about 2/3 the size that they were back in the mid/late '90s. And with that downsizing, the ratio of surface, salt/garlic, soft interior and certainly, recipe, had changed towards the "bland" bread experience.

The classic Olive Garden breadstick of yore was actually a WORTHY delight, maybe the only such served there.

The combo of Seafood and Cheese Tortelini was AWFUL.

They could have served it in a Gerber's Baby Food jar. "Mushy" would wildly be an understatement.

Flavor-wise, it wasn't.

It was like Italian food that had been cooked by Englishmen.

Hardly a bit of seasoning, and the cream sauce tasted more like "half & half with flour", than any chef-prepared sauce.

I left 2/3 of it on my plate, paid the tab, tipped the waitress (wasn't her fault), and left without a word.

The ONLY good thing, was that their Alfredo sauce w/ the breadsticks, was as good as I'd remembered.

Pity the rest.

And this is the same Ownership Group that holds sway over Red Lobster.

See any resemblance there?

Put a small bowl of water out for it, and a plate with about 1/4 can of tuna.

DO the tuna. It's very aromatic, and will draw the kitteh to teh plate.

Set both within your line of sight, on the far side of whatever room you're in.

If the kitteh is tame, but scared, it will nibble, lap some water, and then come to you.

If it's wild, it will "stalk" the bowl and plate, but likely not engage, not daring to commit to "head-down-in-the-bowl" while the threat (you) still lurks.

If wild, you'll need a Hav a Hart trap.

Tame?

Skritches.

I am not sure what that says as i have met some really smart dogs in my day. But in general, the cats have more situational awareness, if not kindness to their owners.

Nice lady dropped off a $15 Starbucks gift card.

I avoid Starbucks like the plague, because there might be actual plague.

Then I thought, no, leave it at the Starbucks and tell the homeless whores and druggies that it's there. But you have to guess the Code.

How much chaos might one create for Starbucks for a free $15 gift card.

I think.....a lot.

Suggestions welcome.

Same with fast food, they are reaching the ten dollar mark for an number 1 or 2. They are pushing the boundaries for what people are willing to pay. Not long ago a fast food meal was $5. Now it is pushing $10. It says it all I guess.

I'm pretty much a "scratch cooking' household. Most foodstuff basics are holding the line, more or less.

Anything "processed" though? Even sliced REAL American cheese? Prices climbing.

Bacon prices are OMG.

The few canned goods I buy though, go always up, never down in price.

I can combat this by bulk purchases, and so, shall.

After that though? We'll see.

I seldom engage w/ fast food as a dietary choice, but when work, lateness, tiny time window for lunch dictate, I'm good at leveraging that industry to MY advantage.

I can get protein and calories there, as needed, at a bargain.

Notice I did not lay claim to "feast", "sumptuous" or "delight".

Utilitarian food, with very few faults in the bargain.

And believe me, the way I order, it IS a Bargain!

McD "Break Menu" double cheeseburger. Hold the Bun.

'Bout $2.00.

Today, w/ some carbs.

Taco Hell. 1. Bean & Cheese Burrito, no red sauce, no onions.

1. Bean & Cheese tostada (toasted corn tortilla), w/ beans, cheese, lettuce n' tomato.

Out the door for under $3 bucks.

And a full tummy with both.

Protein, animal fats and some vegetables, are far more "filling" than a bag fulla "chips".

Even w/ shopping basic ingredients at the store and home cooking. I can eat WELL, and at a fraction of the "cost", as most.

It being the MidEast, and Iraq, it's complicated, and effed up, but a major issue driving protests is .... resentment of Iranian influence and interference, in particular militarily, via controlled shi'a militia. But of course Iraq is doomed to be just a puppet of Tehran, being shi'a and all. Or something.

They do, and only as a VERY close 3rd behind Germany's Merkel and such.

Jolly Olde England still holds, #1 with Purdey, H&H, Rigby and more.

Fact be know though, a premium Spanish double is easily the equal or better of any of the German guns, and would threaten the Brits in a blind tasting.

Rifles though? The Brits took the Mauser action, gave it to Rigby, and the angels SANGED!

Or, if you prefer, the classic British Dangerous Game Rifle(s).

Doubles, in Nitro chamberings.

You can buy houses for the prices of these, and not hovels, either.

Six figures is not out of the realm for a current production Purdy.

And you're going to wait at least two years before it's your turn for "The Fitting". And about two more years before your gun is slated to be delivered.

You're going to fly to London a few times, for all of this of course.

i miss the McDLT. They never did it better but dumped it for the SJW global warming types. The packaging was just too evil.

The new Quarter Pounders are fresh, not frozen. But the few times i go to MCD, I go for the Big Mac. It is probably a nostalgia thing. I did have their attempt at a chicken sandwich today. It was ok, but they need to get rid of the bbq sauce.

BTW, I laugh about people freaking over the Popeyes' sandwich. Yeah, it was good, but what a joke of a company. The place is still inneficient as hell ANd not the cleanest place i have encountered. It has been a month since they "ran out" of chicken sandwiches. WTH? A month?
Some say buy the stock QSR. Fine, go for it. I don't know what is going to happen. But I do know that Popeyes is like 8 percent of their company. They are mostly the poorly performing Tim Horton's and the ultra lefty and poorly performing Burger King. Hell, maybe they will hit it out of the park with the BK impossible Burger and the Popeye's sandwich. But My guess is you have to actually have the sandwich to make a killing on it.

The best milk I have ever had was when the then-Miklos babe and I rented a farmhouse for a week near the Summer Medieval Games at at Hungary's largest remaining castle (the Habsburgs blew up the rest).

The farmer we rented from suggested trying the milk before putting it in the coffee. It was the richest, sweet, ultra deluxe milk ever. And warm, not cold.

I asked where this milk came from, and the farmer said "look out the window".

I looked at the cow, and the cow looked at me.

Not a dairy farm, just a hardscrabble family farm with a few cows, pigs and chickens, plus a small garden, for food as any grocery store was miles away and over a mountain (in either direction). Before the interstate came roaring through, going food shopping was an all-day affair.

639 The months that have passed since the enemy's Mueller Offensive have seen very terrible catastrophic events in the world—ups and downs, misfortunes— but can anyone sitting here this afternoon, this October afternoon, not feel deeply thankful for what has happened in the time that has passed and for the very great improvement in the position of our country and of our home?

Why, when I was here last time we Deplorables were quite alone, desperately alone, and we had been so for five or six months. We had the unmeasured menace of the enemy and their Media attack still beating upon us, and you yourselves had had experience of this attack; and I expect you are beginning to feel impatient that there has been this long lull with nothing particular turning up!

But we must learn to be equally good at what is short and sharp and what is long and tough. It is generally said that the Morons are often better at the last. They do not expect to move from crisis to crisis; they do not always expect that each day will bring up some noble chance of war; but when they very slowly make up their minds that the thing has to be done and the job put through and finished, then, even if it takes months—if it takes years—they do it.

640 Note how when someone is publically praising, rightfully so, Trump's economic accomplishments thus far, and they decide to try to throw in a comment re the border, they dont say, "shutting down border" or "building the wall" they say, "making the border more secure" blah blah blah. 400 miles of wall ey? Is that new or replacement? A mix, how much? What about the other 1,600 miles? At this rate, another 4 years would still give us well over half the border still wide open. Just be honest. Dont even bring up the wall - it insults the intelligence of those paying attention to the details of it (or lack thereof).

641 Emil,

No defensive position is continuous over 1600 miles. What it should do is funnel attackers into zones defended by people or make transit unprofitable for infiltrators.

Ask anybody who has defended a fortified position and they will tell you it beats the hell out of a meeting engagement.

Now that it's all come to pass, will you throw out the local quislings you voted for, or will we continue to watch the Democrats Divisive Circus of Destruction?

I for one am tired of watching a bunch of despots trample our Constitution and then despicably hide behind it like a fig leaf. If you're not with the country, you're against it.

I think we are still paying long distance tax on land line from the Spanish American War.

What's a "land line"? Is that that continuous broken stripe in the middle of a road? And when did Spain invade the US? It was in Southern California, and the US lost, right?

734 Don't forget the income tax only held until it was passed as the 16th Amendment. It was also meant to hit only the "wealthy". See how that works?

They had to make it a constitutional amendment because every other congressional effort since the end of the Civil War to install a tax failed. In 1895 the Supreme Court actually overturned one of the income tax attempts. Good times.

geez, over at Insty, the pictures of the trans-women that play women's rugby and are breaking the bones of the women are crazy. The referees are quitting in protest.

One of those "women" look like a starting left tackle on a Big 5 conference football team.

On 25 May 2006, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued IRS Notice 2006-50, 2006 I.R.B. 25, which stated in part:

[... ] the Internal Revenue Service will follow the
holdings of Am. Bankers Ins. Group v. United States, 408 F.3d 1328 (11th
Cir. 2005) (ABIG); OfficeMax, Inc. v. United States, 428 F.3d 583 (6th
Cir. 2005); Nat'l R.R. Passenger Corp. v. United States, 431 F.3d 374
(D.C. Cir. 2005) (Amtrak); Fortis v. United States, 2006 U.S. App. LEXIS
10749 (2d Cir. Apr. 27, 2006); and Reese Bros. v. United States, 2006
U.S. App. LEXIS 11468 (3d Cir. May 9, 2006). These cases hold that a
telephonic communication for which there is a toll charge that varies
with elapsed transmission time and not distance (time-only
service) is not taxable toll telephone service as defined in §4252(b)(1)
of the Internal Revenue Code. As a result, amounts paid for time-only
service are not subject to the tax imposed by §4251. Accordingly, the
government will no longer litigate this issue [....] [emphasis added]

I think that means they no longer apply the tax.

Same fuck you to libertarians. Your wonderful ideas of open borders and free trade may work if there was no welfare and every country was on the gold standard. But voting the L wacko is just a vote for socialism.

I enjoy watching the old shows to see the stars in their early days.

Rod Sterling's original Twilight Zone had a lot of them. Shatner was downright skinny in that plane.

754 The real kick of the Nickelback video takedown is, Nickelback didn't even have to be the one to initiate it. DMCA violation claims, somehow, don't have to be filed by the actual purported violated party, or even anyone related to them whether by contract or by blood. YouTube has a long history of unrelated third parties filing claims against material they absolutely don't own, often just by someone being an ass. If the Twitter media claim was made via the DMCA, which is almost certain, it could have been filed by literally anyone with an Internet connection. (Hell, if Donny Two-Scoops really wanted to play 4-dimensional chess with this, he could have filed it himself just to underscore how stupid, broken and arbitrary DMCA enforcement is.)
