Anyhoo, I was discussing the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (Manchukuo) earlier. 1931; ratified by China in 1933. The League of Nations gave a queef of a complaint at the time. AJP Taylor's book "Origins of the Second World War" points out, it's not like any Europeans could talk, because they were already in control of several port cities on the Chinese coast, and in fact the Brits had just invaded Shanghai in 1927.
Consider post-revolutionary pre-Mao China as the Ottoman Empire in 1910. It wasn't a real country; it was just a mess. Also Manchuria was Manchu then, not Chinese, and the Chinese had made a point of not being Manchu by, like, kicking the Manchu Emperor out. So Manchuria was left to anarchy as of 1930.
rhomboid made the salient point (actually I'd made it too) that the problem wasn't so much that the Japs had invaded. Better them than the commies, right? It was that those particular Japs had invaded, in 1931. Japan was still somewhat sane in the 1910s. By 1931 it had gotten hijacked by the military who were... less sane.

I went to take my car to get it inspected. September is quickly running out. So I take it to my car dealer (Sheahy Honda in Alexandria, VA), drop it off at the staging area, and go to wait in the waiting area. About a half hour later a pretty, blue eyed, blonde lady, looking embarrassed and worried, came in and asked If I had come alone? I said yes. She then said that someone got into my car and just drove off. It was 0900 and the place was full of employees and customers. There are cameras everywhere and yet, my car was stolen. In a CAR DEALERSHIP. Geez. Anyway, I made a police report, did the insurance thing, and will pick up my rental tomorrow morning. So, my day sucked. How was all of yours?

I've read that part of the reason why the Japanese were "less sane" had a lot to do with the Russo-Japanese War. Supposedly, the Japanese had been shocked and surprised to discover that even though they won the war, their troops had been just as likely to surrender as everyone elses'. That supposedly started a push for the "surrender is dishonorable" attitude that went waaaaaay out of control.
On another note, Netflix has a Korean drama that I enjoyed called "Mr. Sunshine". It's set in the period just before and just after the Russo-Japanese War, and the gradual handing over of power to the Japanese is one of the topics of the series (historically, early in the Twentieth Century the Korean government essentially signed the country over to Japan). I don't know how accurate the series is, but I'm pretty sure that at least some of the more brutal Japanese stuff depicted in the series is anachronistic, and didn't show up until at least the '20s (or possibly early '30s).

I remember wondering how the Chinese could have ended up with a Manchu Emperor, and found out it was the same reason they ended up with Mongol Emperors, and some from other groups. There were always bitter regional and cultural rivalries in China; occasionally they would all agree that the only hope of avoiding endless civil war was to bring in an Emperor who didn't belong to any of the competing factions. When everyone got sick of them, they were always pretty easy to overthrow; although that meant civil war started again.
It seems like civil war, toggling back and forth with a harsh government that can clamp down on everyone is the default model for most late period civilizations. Perhaps we're just falling into the old paradigm.

Korea in the '30s was part of Japan, and had been that way for a couple of decades. I've heard individuals who might be in a position to know state that a lot of the post-War attitude by Koreans toward the Japanese was a desperate attempt to pretend that they hadn't actually been on pretty good terms with the Japanese during the War.
I don't know enough about the situation to say whether they're right or wrong on the matter.

Another example: the $35 Raspberry Pi. It's not just a quad core computer. It's got a GPIO on the chip that can do any kind of modulation you can think of. AM, FM, PSK, FSK, TV, SSB, anything. That's what I'll be using for an FT8 transmitter eventually. I've been using it as a WSPR transmitter for months.
The thing about the RTL-SDR receiver that blows me away is that its two chips are proprietary, and the guys who figured out how to use it as a general purpose receiver did it all with no documentation; they just used reverse engineering and hacking to puzzle it all out. That is my definition of genius.

Consuelo's is Fort Collins based. Very small operation. They used to have a full service restaurant near the CSU campus, but the mom and dad retired, and the kids took over, but scaled it back to a drive-up and take out place.
Wonderful food. One thing they do is breakfast burritos that they make for convenience stores in town. They sell fast. I am lucky to score a Consuelo's burrito.
Their chimichanga is amazing. they use egg roll wrappers. Unbelievable.

IIRC, the chances of a sterilizing level gamma ray burst are about 50% per billion years or half a billion years or something, I forget. To be sterilizing, it has to be close enough, and oriented so the solar system is in the beam, and that's where they get the probability.
At any rate, the odds are such that's it about certain the earth experienced at least one during the 4 billion year history, and there's a mass extinction event way back somewhere that fits the bill.
That 8th Century event, if it was one, wasn't close enough to be such a sterilizing event.

I build my own amps, filters and antennas from scratch, but that's about it. I will be taking the plunge into RF open source software on Raspbian soon, and building a CAT controller for my FT8 setup.
I suppose you could build SMD stuff at home, but unless you invest in very expensive equipment, you'd have to have rock-steady hands and eagle eyes to work manually with that teeny tiny stuff.

I've read that in Asia, one highly paid highly skilled job is manual repair of motherboards. Some young ladies have the ability to get in there with itty bitty soldering irons and patch those miniscule traces and pads. If you can save a $200 motherboard with a five minute repair, it makes sense to pay well for it.

These days, if you buy a resistor with ordinary through-hole leads, it's almost certainly a metal-film, which has a coil deposited on an insulator. Whoops, now those resistors are inductors too! So you have to be careful using them in RF circuits. i have a whole list of resistor values for future projects, that I have to order new-old-stock carbon composition resistors on eBay for.
But most resistors (and caps) these days are surface mounted, a couple millimeters square and one millimeter thick.

In the news the past couple of day is some study which says that by 2100 (I.e., in 80 years) if nothing is done about global warming, the worlds economic growth will be some 3% less than it could be if we address global warming now.
My first response is "3%, so what?"
But my second response is "What utter BS!"

Would these prognosticators, if they were alive back then, even if they had today's computational and information technology, have been able to predict the state of today's economy? Even my attempts soldering with the old carbon resistors was cause for amusement and that was over thirty years ago. I can calculate a dipole and feed it with ladder line. That's about the extent of my DIY with radio.

Gamma ray bursts are some of the most energetic events in the universe, in terms of power output. The ones that have been observed are so far away that if the output were spherical, the energy would be so large, there was no known physics to do it by far.
So that's why it had to be beamed, axial. Even then, the total output represents several earth masses of mass being converted to energy *per second*.
There is one thing even more powerful, and that's the power ouput of the gravitational radiation burst emitted by black hole mergers. You can get solar mass amounts converted to energy in less than a minute.
Interestingly, recently someone found an odd General Relativistic effect where the gamma ray burst could be a warped spacetime optical illusion. IOW, not a real burst at the power, but a trick caused by spatial expansion over large distances.

Another way you can "build" that stuff yourself is to design it at home with free CAD software, then send the design files to fabs in Asia, and they'll make the PCBs and solder everything on for you, and ship you the finished boards. This is expensive for a one-off project, but if you intend to sell your board, you get quantity discount.
I don't know if anybody in the USA makes SMD stuff, but if it is made here, it will be more expensive than Asian fab.
When I order parts for my projects, they are almost always cheaper from overseas (not just Asia) EVEN with the shipping included. I've bought parts from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, as well as the usual Asian suspects. They get some kind of deal on shipping that US companies don't.
For example, I bought qty:2 adapters from Hong Kong for $1.80, shipping included. They pack a shipping container full of stuff, send it over on a ship, unpack and distribute it from a slave-labor subsidiary on the US west coast, to me in the midwest. It takes 2-8 weeks to get it.
Somehow, their shipping cost from San Diego to Illinois is pennies, whereas if I order something from American company Jameco in California, the shipping alone is going to cost me far more than $1.80. I get it faster, but most things I don't need fast. The President hasn't heard yet about this sweet domestic shipping deal that foreign countries use in the USA I guess. Otherwise, he'd nuke it.

Ah, the ol' Alcubierre Warp Drive, and similar notions. I quibble with how they describe it, but that's a matter of highly technical GR coordinate shit.
Anyway, it requires *negative* mass-energy. Otherwise known as exotic matter. Previously that was thought to be impossible, but maybe not. Anyway, you just need a few solar masses worth of negative mass energy to do it, plus a few solar masses worth of regular positive mass as well.
And put in some sort of "engine". The level of engineering required would put into the Type II Civilization level.
Now, General Relativity allows, of itself, a lot of crazy shit and this is one of one. It allow also time-travel. But that would lead to impossible conditions, so everyone assumes that "other physics" limits what GR allows.
There's been analysis of the Alcubierre Warp field, and there was something I remember that Quantum Field Theory on it would make it impossible somehow.
Also, I think someone showed the Alcubierre Metric allowed for closed time-like curves (which means time travel). If so, it's likely impossible.
It's an interesting idea, but even it's possible, it's something far beyond anything humans could do. Manipulating the energy of the sun in a small space and time.

Another funny thing about the Alcubierre Metric I remember. Someone showed that, for a pilot in the middle of the bubble it would take an *infinite* amount of time for a light signal from the inside of the bubble to reach the "engine".

Any tank commander is going to promptly button up when he hears the whistle of the incoming rounds. And if the initial rounds do catch him off guard, then the round still has to land pretty close to catch him in the blast before he buttons up.
The most likely thing to have happen during a Katy barrage would be to blow one of the tracks off of the tank.

I may be completely wrong, but I am somewhat optimistic. I have the feeling that as more and more of the deep state people are isolated, identified, removed, etc., they have fewer and fewer insider plays to try. 1.) Artillery guns (as opposed to rockets) generally packed enough explosives in each shell to hurt a tank if they land close enough. There's also the secondary effects of having great big explosive shells land next to you. For instance, Panzer Lehr reported tanks completely flipped (but otherwise largely intact) by the bombs dropped during the US carpet bombing toward the end of the Normandy Breakout. Crew concussions would be more likely from artillery than flipping a heavy vehicle, mind you.
2.) The Soviets tended to call just about everything with a long non-turreted barrel "artillery". To the Americans, the ISU-122 would probably have been considered to be a tank destroyer that could also carry out long-range bombardments. To the Soviets, it was another self-propelled direct fire artillery piece with a gun that was very nasty in the anti-tank role. Additionally, their primary light artillery gun from the middle of the war on, the 76mm zis 3, also just happened to be their premier anti-tank gun.
A comparison to the Soviet view on artillery can also probably be made with the German StuG III self-propelled gun. The Germans recognized that the vehicle improved the anti-tank performance of otherwise outdated Panzer III hulls. So they used it in their tank units when there weren't enough tanks to go around. In these units, it was grouped into the standard four-tank platoons. But it also was used in units that were assigned to the artillery branch. In these units (which were attached to infantry divisions), the StuGs would be organized into three vehicle "batteries" that were the artillery branch's equivalent of the panzer platoons.

So doing what any sensible commander would do, he had his mortars lob a couple of rounds at the other column "to speed them up"
To which the other column started counter battery fire.
The great assault on the presidential palace to oust a tyrannical monster and secure freedom and security for Paraguay paused to engage in a mortar duel with itself.

I've read that the big tragedy of the Romanian coup in 1989 was that none of the military units involved knew for sure which side any of the other military units were siding with. So even though most of them were anti-government, none of them could be sure about that. As a result, there were a number of incidents of fighting between different units that were both working to remove the remnants of the Ceaucescu government from power.

In Spanish there is a word for freedom (libertad) which is very similar to the word for lawlessness (libertinaje). Basically libertinaje is also translated as too much freedom. Too much 'freedom' and we end up with San Fran type streets. Havana's streets were also full of overflowing sewage and trash. Venezuela much the same now. Not enough freedom and we have the very clean streets I saw in Madrid while Franco was still in power. We used to say that in Madrid you could eat off the streets. If a person threw a paper on the street the guardia civil was closed by to tell them to correct that behavior or it would be corrected by force.
What do we prefer? (There is a happy medium of course. The America of small town America where civilized people behaved properly because it was expected of them.)
I'll take a Franco or a Pinochet over a Castro/Chavez/Maduro/Stalin if I had to choose. Unfortunately sometimes the choices we are presented with are not optimal. Trump is a good man. I believe that he loves this country. But I dont know that he is brutal enough to save it.

At that point you could have dissuaded the leftoids from moving there and people could have gone back to getting along with gay and black people as they always have, only with the external image to the rest of the world that the community is completely undesirable.
Once the leftists arrive, the only left to do is set the city ablaze and then start the rebuild, sans leftists.

I'm once again exploring degree options. I had started one program but had to discontinue when life interfered, but now that things have settled back out I'm considering it again.
I don't really need it for the job I'm doing, I have the experience and training to cover it very well, but it does open doors...and it's easier to say "I have an associates degree in Electronic Engineering Technology" than to explain a JST transcript and describe what military schools cover.

Yeah, I'm from Cincinnati and was scrolling through the list wondering what Ohio's would show. I wasn't surprised to see it, but at least they didn't highlight Skyline Chili. I wouldn't say Cincy chili is an abomination. But it isn't really traditionally known chili. It is a good dish, kinda weird. And it is well known! I think if it wasn't called "chili," it wouldn't get such a bad rap.
