41 I considered attempting something like this for the Deplorable Gourmet, but it was too ambitious.

The critters are astoundingly well-depicted for the Black Death school of painting. (Shut up if I'm off by a couple of centuries). Usually everything is phantasmagorical.

The skate looks good, so do the pike, the turtle, the seal, the octopus, etc. The only exception is that two-tusked monster top left. That would be the drugs.

Also you have salt and fresh water things together with amphibians. That's not going to work.

I keep it wrapped in plastic, and wash my hands thoroughly after I give it to him.

100 I really enjoy Giuseppe Arcimboldo's whimsical paintings. But besides the great imagination and humor, his talent as a painter is excellent. Look at the accurate portrayals and colors of the varied items. I have no idea how they were received in the 1500s. I just assume he wouldn't (or couldn't) paint them as a lark. It would have been too expensive for materials and he probably needed the time for the standard portraits. (BTW, I think his whimsical works are much better than the regular portraits.)

Thanks, CBD. This painting is a hoot as are the many others shown on his wiki page.

giants. Not surprising she's leading the pack, This stuff resonates
with the masses.

Hell, I'd be almost tempted to jump on board. But I know that tax
billionaires will, within about 2 years turn into tax anyone making more
than $100K.

She has to up her game if she wants to out tax bernie. He is claiming that billionaires have no right to exist and he will tax them until they no longer have any money.

He estimates he can tax more than half of the current billionaires out of existence within 15 years with his wealth tax and "substantially break up the wealth and power of a small group of people" and in turn he would give that confiscated money to poor people through expanded free government programs.

207 Don't know if it got attention here, since most of the media covered the story with a pillow until it quit moving. 6300 deaths linked to "puberty-blocker" used on gender-confused children.

*********

The reported deaths were among all users of the drug, Lupron, not just children. Outrage about this report misses the larger point. Use of Lupron in children for the purpose of blocking a normal, healthy, developmental process is WRONG!

Biologically wrong.
Physiologically wrong.
Psychologically wrong.
Morally wrong.

Doesn't matter if the drug itself is perfectly safe.

It's WRONG.

I regret ever having worked for an institution that supports this practice.

242 The 6300 statistic is useless bunk. Whoever started circulating it either doesn't know what FDA data means or does but intends to be dishonest. FDA collects all sorts of adverse event data. Sometimes it will do some actual analysis assessing causation or request that a drug maker do so, but there's no indication that it has done so here. Adverse event reports consist of reports from patients, doctors, lawyers etc. If you have a stroke while taking "x" drug, it may end up in the adverse report data, but that doesn't mean that "x" drug caused or contributed to the event. I'm not being facetious when I say that if you die in a car accident that can end up reported as a death in adverse event data for a drug.

What Bernie and Warren fail to appreciate is that if someone is capable enough to become a billionaire, they are capable of moving it/hiding it away from whatever tax they come up with.

And really, when Warren started talking about taxing their art, their diamonds all I could think was: how will she do that - will she send government goons to demand to see all of your expensive stuff to appraise and catalogue it? That does not sound like liberty to me. That sounds like the beginning of a government who doesn't think the 4th amendment can stop them from demanding they know what possessions you have, etc.

The annual inflation rate for groceries down here is about 7% or 8%. It's been that way for about 10 years. The Living Wage is pushing a lot of it today. I'd be willing to bet there are more than a few food items that have doubled in price since then.

That's a pretty high price to only benefit the 7% or so of working Americans who won't stay at the minimum wage forever anyway. Every time the government begins meddling in the economy, we all suffer. That's the "empowerment" that aggrieved groups are after.

Take those kids out of the picture and you are most certainly paying federal taxes.

The system is gamed and all of the "rules" are in Congresses hands. They change them when they feel like it to give breaks to certain individuals or groups.

A flat tax is the answer. Everyone, including corporations that has "income" pays a flat tax at the rate of 8% and that's it, no exemptions or deductions. That gets everybody in the game.

Exactly. "Free Trade" theory has a hole in it you could drive a tank through. They assumed that the advantages of one nation over another are fixed, and that capital was immobile. All the factories beat feet to run to cheaper labor, and they never adjusted the theory to account for real world performance.

Now we've got a hollow "service economy" that operates on exchanging our accumulated fortune in exchange for foreign goods. The result is Detroit-style ruins, and if unchecked, will produce those everywhere.

Free trade only works on a level playing field, and when a bad actor like Chiba tilts it in their favor, you have to re-level it by some other means. Playing a game you can't win at is insane.

I don't *need* to shop there, but I do. (In my area the staff is horrible, the clientele worse, but the prices are good.) The hard part comes when you *have* to get most of your food there, because the crappy old car broke down again and one of the kids is still sick and Dad broke his wrist, and Mom finds out her office temp skills from 1999 are woefully out of date. You get the idea.

I second that. It cuts the IRS down closer to its designed size, which is as little as possible. I would also require the Federal Budget be and stay balanced at all times with no exceptions unless a real war happens.
We have the right to do these things to reign in a government that is clearly out of control and is openly antagonistic towards whomever they choose and will punish them for daring to defy them. I'm old enough to remember when this didn't happen as much. I'm pretty sure that's not what Our Founders intended.

In the early '70s, when gas was .55/gallon, I could buy a six-pack of (not very top-level) beer at the A & P for $1.25. In the mid-'70s, Cutty Sark fifths went for $6.50, and so did Jack Daniel's. The town was prevented by the State from doing anything about the flop houses until something broke. One time the water/sewer guys went into one after the sewer backed up into the street and found 20+ people living in a two bedroom house.

They had mattresses and cots all over the place. The Town kicked them all out but they just moved to another place.

I was mowing my lawn one day and a Chinese guy was wandering the neighborhood offering cash to buy up houses. He offered me $200,000 but I turned him down.

Also, the local argument over whether walleye is pike or pickerel has to do less with Canadian language oddities (they call a pike a pickerel), than with the Chief Tecumseh Reparation Act, which allows Ohio commercial fishermen to bring in perch, but reserves "walleye pike" for the Canadians.
If you had a walleye-like fish on your line in Ohio waters, and defined it as a pickerel, you might just get away with that. A ton of that? I doubt it.

463 Instead of a flat tax, I'd like to replace the income tax with a National Sales Tax (and matching import duty) and a Capital Gains Tax.

Taxes would be voluntary - you could technically opt out entirely by only buying non-taxed items (non-luxury foods, housing, and thrift store clothes) and not investing.

They'd naturally land most heavily on the rich, since the rich buy more and own more large investments.

I am in strong disagreement.

A. First you would have to eliminate the 16th. I do not see that happening.

B. Why is 'not investing' going to be promoted? Why is actively discouraging consumption a good thing?

C. Perhaps the wealthy will spend more, but the burden will fall disproportionately on the lower income earners.

479 Taxes are used by the government to direct behavior.

If you want less of something, tax it.

See cigarettes and the soda tax.

Want more of it, remove taxes.

See Churches, 501c3s, etc.

Want more people to own homes, allow deductions for mortgages.

Want states to reduce state taxes, or lose weathy populations? Limit state income and real estate tax deductions. LOL.

See how this works. Taxes bring in revenue for the government but much of our tax code is pure and simple behavior modification.

A flat tax would eliminate the government's power to direct behavior, which is why politicians don't want it.

495 I am in strong disagreement.

A. First you would have to eliminate the 16th. I do not see that happening.

B. Why is 'not investing' going to be promoted? Why is actively discouraging consumption a good thing?

C. Perhaps the wealthy will spend more, but the burden will fall disproportionately on the lower income earners.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 01, 2019 10:42 AM (xSo9G)

A. Many of us wish it would. The income tax deserves to die

B. If taxing something automatically discourages it, then why are we discouraging people from earning large incomes? Also, why is discouraging saving (as modern inflationary policy naturally does) any better?

C. Did you miss the bit about tax-excluded items? Things like food, sub-median housing, and basic (or second-hand) clothing should be exempt. Basically, the only things a typical poor family would be taxed on would be their vehicles, media consumption, and hobbies.

found them just off Norfolk canyon in july. 700 feet down. even the little ones take forever to bring up...

increasing demand for many other goods and services, thus causing those

they like the low wages for their servants, like the broader base of consumers, like the higher price for goods (which they sell), like the broader base of BigGov voters (since they control BigGov), like the welfare state that taxes the middle to fund the lower (virtue signaling plus funding the poor to keep buying their goods) ...

Turning America into a third world hell hole is fine with them, they live in the expensive areas, keep the riff raff out. And they can keep a majority in debt, so they have to show up for work to keep up with the interest payment to the banks. such a deal.

Next they want globalism to escape the voter entirely ... can't have Trump happen to them again (but looks like they have to wait at least four more years to overthrow US?)

531 I've read 240 comments, and only #100 really mentions Arcimboldo's other paintings. They're worth Googling. 'Water' is part of a set of the Four Elements. Air is a head made of birds, Earth is made of land animals, Fire is a bit more complicated. He painted another set of the Four Seasons. Spring and Fall are particularly nice, being made all out of flowers and fruits, respectively. In this case the apple cheeks are actual apples. There's also a lawyer's face made entirely out of old dusty books and papers. Definitely worth at least a brief look. I think of Arcimboldo as being an artist rather like M. C. Escher in some respects. Each has a narrow range, does weird stuff that no one else does, but does it so very well that there's no point in anyone even trying to compete. I'm not often in a mood for either, but when I am, I am. Niche painters, you might say.

532 Also, the local argument over whether walleye is pike or pickerel has to do less with Canadian language oddities (they call a pike a pickerel), than with the Chief Tecumseh Reparation Act, which allows Ohio commercial fishermen to bring in perch, but reserves "walleye pike" for the Canadians.
If you had a walleye-like fish on your line in Ohio waters, and defined it as a pickerel, you might just get away with that. A ton of that? I doubt it.
Ohio sport fishermen are allowed to catch walleye.
Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 01, 2019 10:42 AM (8ZmvG)

No, Canadians do not call pike "pickerel". They are two distinct species of fish. Pickerel are sometimes referred to as "walleyes", and pike are called "jackfish", "hammer handles", and "slough sharks". Or just "pike".

Pickerel are good eating. Pike is OK, if from a cold water lake, but the forked rib bones are a PITA.
