I considered attempting something like this for the Deplorable Gourmet, but it was too ambitious.
The critters are astoundingly well-depicted for the Black Death school of painting. (Shut up if I'm off by a couple of centuries). Usually everything is phantasmagorical. The skate looks good, so do the pike, the turtle, the seal, the octopus, etc. The only exception is that two-tusked monster top left. That would be the drugs. Also you have salt and fresh water things together with amphibians. That's not going to work. Posted by: Dennis Hopper at October 01, 2019 09:36 AM (FNXDu) 42

I really enjoy Giuseppe Arcimboldo's whimsical paintings. But besides the great imagination and humor, his talent as a painter is excellent. Look at the accurate portrayals and colors of the varied items. I have no idea how they were received in the 1500s. I just assume he wouldn't (or couldn't) paint them as a lark. It would have been too expensive for materials and he probably needed the time for the standard portraits. (BTW, I think his whimsical works are much better than the regular portraits.)
Thanks, CBD. This painting is a hoot as are the many others shown on his wiki page. Posted by: JTB at October 01, 2019 09:43 AM (bmdz3) 101

I remember when the Government was going to break up Microsoft for the crime of including a browser in it's operating system. The threat we face from these social media platforms is an existential threat and they definately need to be dealt with in some form or fashion, I don't believe whatever remedy Elizabeth Warren has in mind will aid us in any way, it will simply be to gain more control over these companies for their own ends and purposes and not to make them fair and equitable. The 6300 statistic is useless bunk. Whoever started circulating it either doesn't know what FDA data means or does but intends to be dishonest. FDA collects all sorts of adverse event data. Sometimes it will do some actual analysis assessing causation or request that a drug maker do so, but there's no indication that it has done so here. Adverse event reports consist of reports from patients, doctors, lawyers etc. If you have a stroke while taking "x" drug, it may end up in the adverse report data, but that doesn't mean that "x" drug caused or contributed to the event. I'm not being facetious when I say that if you die in a car accident that can end up reported as a death in adverse event data for a drug.

What Bernie and Warren fail to appreciate is that if someone is capable enough to become a billionaire, they are capable of moving it/hiding it away from whatever tax they come up with. And really, when Warren started talking about taxing their art, their diamonds all I could think was: how will she do that - will she send government goons to demand to see all of your expensive stuff to appraise and catalogue it? In a lot of places in the U.S., living costs are so high a married
couple w/ 2 kids making $60K are eating food from Dollar Tree. That needs to change. The annual inflation rate for groceries down here is about 7% or 8%. It's been that way for about 10 years. The Living Wage is pushing a lot of it today. I'd be willing to bet there are more than a few food items that have doubled in price since then. That's a pretty high price to only benefit the 7% or so of working Americans who won't stay at the minimum wage forever anyway. Every time the government begins meddling in the economy, we all suffer. That's the "empowerment" that aggrieved groups are after. Posted by: Brother Cavil is bored, why do you ask? at October 01, 2019 10:13 AM (AM1GF) Exactly. "Free Trade" theory has a hole in it you could drive a tank through. They assumed that the advantages of one nation over another are fixed, and that capital was immobile. All the factories beat feet to run to cheaper labor, and they never adjusted the theory to account for real world performance. Now we've got a hollow "service economy" that operates on exchanging our accumulated fortune in exchange for foreign goods. The result is Detroit-style ruins, and if unchecked, will produce those everywhere. Free trade only works on a level playing field, and when a bad actor like Chiba tilts it in their favor, you have to re-level it by some other means. Playing a game you can't win at is insane. A flat tax is the answer. Everyone, including corporations that has

That gets everybody in the game. --------- It has the additional advantage of not requiring any tinkering with the 16th, which the so-called Fair Tax would. Black cod is really North Pacific sablefish, called, in Hawai'i, "butterfish."
Oh, you mean Nancy! Also, the local argument over whether walleye is pike or pickerel has to do less with Canadian language oddities (they call a pike a pickerel), than with the Chief Tecumseh Reparation Act, which allows Ohio commercial fishermen to bring in perch, but reserves "walleye pike" for the Canadians. If you had a walleye-like fish on your line in Ohio waters, and defined it as a pickerel, you might just get away with that. A ton of that? I doubt it. Instead of a flat tax, I'd like to replace the income tax with a National Sales Tax (and matching import duty) and a Capital Gains Tax.
Taxes would be voluntary - you could technically opt out entirely by only buying non-taxed items (non-luxury foods, housing, and thrift store clothes) and not investing. They'd naturally land most heavily on the rich, since the rich buy more and own more large investments. Posted by: Cato ------------ I am in strong disagreement. A. Taxes are used by the government to direct behavior.
If you want less of something, tax it. See cigarettes and the soda tax. Want more of it, remove taxes. See Churches, 501c3s, etc. Want more people to own homes, allow deductions for mortgages. Want states to reduce state taxes, or lose weathy populations? Limit state income and real estate tax deductions. LOL. See how this works. Taxes bring in revenue for the government but much of our tax code is pure and simple behavior modification. A flat tax would eliminate the government's power to direct behavior, which is why politicians don't want it. Posted by: Jen the original at October 01, 2019 10:47 AM (7f3YP) 480

I'm old enough to recall when 'Mahi' was 'Dolphin'. Some marketing/restaurant guy was bright enough to use a seemingly exotic name for it on the menu and, voila! People began to knowingly, glowingly speak of 'Mahi', because hip.
It's Dolphin folks...just plain old dolphin. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 01, 2019 11:03 AM (CDGwz) 525

If it was just shipping manufacturing overseas it would be bad enough, but importing entire populations to keep wages on every level low? While increasing demand for many other goods and services, thus causing those costs to rise? Not even considering the other externalities? Madness. Utter madness.

"Finding jobs that four people can live on, despite the improvement in the economy, ain't always easy.

I've read 240 comments, and only #100 really mentions Arcimboldo's other paintings. They're worth Googling. 'Water' is part of a set of the Four Elements. Air is a head made of birds, Earth is made of land animals, Fire is a bit more complicated. He painted another set of the Four Seasons. Spring and Fall are particularly nice, being made all out of flowers and fruits, respectively. In this case the apple cheeks are actual apples. There's also a lawyer's face made entirely out of old dusty books and papers. Definitely worth at least a brief look. I think of Arcimboldo as being an artist rather like M. C. Escher in some respects. Each has a narrow range, does weird stuff that no one else does, but does it so very well that there's no point in anyone even trying to compete. I'm not often in a mood for either, but when I am, I am. Niche painters, you might say.

I doubt it. Ohio sport fishermen are allowed to catch walleye. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 01, 2019 10:42 AM (8ZmvG) No, Canadians do not call pike "pickerel". They are two distinct species of fish. Pickerel are sometimes referred to as "walleyes", and pike are called "jackfish", "hammer handles", and "slough sharks". Or just "pike". Pickerel are good eating. Pike is OK, if from a cold water lake, but the forked rib bones are a PITA. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 01, 2019 11:23 AM (jEgzt) 533
