9 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday, September 21, 2019. One this day in 1938 the Great Hurricane of 1938 made landfall on Long Island in New York. The death toll was estimated at 500-00 people. It was only a cat 3 hurricane but since these were rare as far North as Long Island the press made a big deal of it. Must have been globull warming huh?

17 I'm not a smart guy but I can remember snow in my little southwest Iowa town during the 70's where they plowed the roads to the center and then came along with a front end loader to load it into dump trucks, which they would then take out to a field by the airport and pile it up. That snow pile would be there until mid July. The same assholes who were squawking about the next ice age then are screaming about glowbull warmening now (look it up, same exact assholes), and even though the temps have stabilized (and even started to cool off) they are STILL clamoring about glowbull warmening but now it's called climate change because they really really do think we're stupid.

And the kids, since history only started yesterday, don't know any better...because no one has bothered to teach them why it's important to know your history.

18 Regarding the GW and the students.
It would be interesting to see that instead of giving them time off from school, that they would protest on their own time.

I remember when the plant I worked for went thru "Total Quality", a program that was always with us and something that we would alway strive for and there was never an end to. We had meetings during work. All sorts of meetings with coffee and donuts, or sodas and pizza.
Off site weekend meetings at a nearby resort. The sky was the limit.
Then the money got yanked. Meetings? Maybe a quick 15 minute one, no snacks, unless you brought your own.
After 3 months, the "Total Quality" died.

Corporate said we had succeeded.

In the military (during the Clinton years) it was called TQL (Total Quality Leadership) and it was just as stupid. I got myself into trouble once by pointing out that our product in the military was death and destruction and our "customers" wouldn't be in any position to complain about it if we did it right. I was told that's how we can judge the quality of our product, by the lack of customer complaints. What a f'n crock.

Just before I retired they got into ORM (Operational Risk Management, the military sure does love their acronyms) which is using bank type risk assessment routines that they aren't allowed to use anymore to make a cost/benefit analysis for operations.

Just a few years ago OODA was a popular acronym that you don't hear much anymore.

The more things change...

Was there an alternate if you did not want to go?

One of my plant mangers tells of when he was in boot camp in the Marines. First Sunday rolls around and they are told ( I believe) that they should go to church in the morning. A few, including this guy, decided not to.
The DI worked there butts off all morning.
Next weekend the PM went to two services, plus he said, the churches were air conditioned

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde

That was the interesting thing of working at the same place for 30 years. The top mangers at the plant and corporate would change about every 5 years or so.
Then some chucklehead at corporate would want to start up an old program with a new name. If any of the old timers balked because it was something we had done ten years ago, we were accused of not being a Team Player

37 Went to Bing to look at their daily picture.
Got a pic of some tubes in front of the Eiffel Tower for "The International Day of Peace"
Explanation?

In today's image, we're featuring 'The Wall for Peace' in Paris for the International Day of Peace. Since 2000, this exhibit, created by artist Clara Halter and architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, has been inspiring visitors to write their own messages of peace and place them in gaps intentionally created in the structure for that purpose. To mark the International Day of Peace, hundreds of events around the world are being held today, including peace fairs, music concerts, meditations, and more. The UN declared it a 'day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.' One of the events today is at UN Headquarters in New York, where the secretary-general will ring the Peace Bell and participants will observe a minute of silence.

So we got that going for us

Ha! I remember those boring tent revivals, except I think it was TQM, "Total Quality Management". We tried to explain that we weren't making widgets on an assembly line, and what we produced couldn't be quantified that way, but this was the era of Business Solutions applied to every fucking thing. And hey, guess what, military leadership retired to Corporate America with a nice bullet for their resume - I spearheaded implementation of TQM!

The philosophy of TQM is sound, especially the tenets of taking care of a problem at the lowest level possible and being focused on the end result and not bean-counting. But it was implemented from the top down and became all about bean-counting.

sounds like a smart move. The smartest use the military to learn a marketable trade and get paid for it. The Clinton and Obama years were down times for the service. I recall career officers telling young men to not join the military during that time. That advice might have not been the best but it was based on the situation. And during the Obama years didn't they get rid of a bunch of Majors? That is smart if you are trying to gut a military force. Get rid of the officers before they reach 20 years and you have to give them retirement pay.

I retired in 2000 but still keep tabs on the Air Force through Facebook and other news. I know in the Air Force alone they reduced the force more than 25,000. They gutted mid level (E-5, E-6) maintenance to a level they still have not recovered from. Last year they made a big thing about being over 2,000 people short in aircraft maintenance an they directed folks coming in to fill those slots. Magically, the shortfall went away....not really. Now they have 2,000 kids who need to be lead around because they have no knowledge and they still have a shortage of mid level technician/supervisors.

And during the Obama years didn't they get rid of a bunch of Majors?
That is smart if you are trying to gut a military force. Get rid of the
officers before they reach 20 years and you have to give them retirement
pay.

Posted by: Quint at September 21, 2019 07:33 AM (n13/j)

---The degree to which Obama screwed up the military is only hinted at, largely because even the military-oriented publications (Military Times, etc.) are all liberal shills like the rest. The Navy got it the worst, though.

Look at the USS Ford. It's a piece of crap. They cut corners and didn't really care if it worked and so it doesn't. Obama also retired other carriers early so now there's a shortage. The Navy abandoned core functions for diversity and got two shipwrecks for their trouble.

The "stop sexual harassment" program basically consisted of an hour-long presentation that "Men are predators." Complete joke.

And yes, they purged the ranks in a stupid way to reduce headcount and ensure the top ranks were down with everything. The military academies also took big cultural hits.

Ironically, I think the Air Force came out the least messed-up because the SECAF was a female veteran and that allowed her to ignore the more outlandish p.c. crap, like when there was a move to eliminate the word "Airman" as too 'gendered.' She killed that dead.

But it's a long slog to get equipment repaired, re-train and rebuild morale and flush out the people who moved up because no one else was left.

Everything Obama makes sense if you understand that he thought the US was too powerful and needed to be humbled. He did his best, that's for sure.

They have a section of the hospital just for the recovery process of all the knee and hip replacements. 3 days, 2 nights. They start PT the first day. Drugs as needed. When they discharge you, you are supposed to be able to walk 250 feet (that's more than I can do now) and climb 6 stairs (the same) Plus 2 hours a day on the CPM machine.

Very true about Jim Neighbors. I don't want to out anyone and will not be doing so here. But I am talking about real people so I felt bad for the guy. This guy in particular was a JAG with a law degree. He didn't have to go to basic training but he thought he should do it. He was too old, too out of shape, and did not get treated well. The Pyle thing is an aside, but it didn't help. He did need a better sense of humor and probably should have skipped basic like the rest of the lawyers.

He was griping about having to rotate out of his position for career advancement, professional military education and so on, and I chuckled and said: "Yes, sir, but that's why you get the big bucks, right?"

"It's not that much," he said.

I leaned back in my chair. "It's more than I get, but then again, I haven't had to do any of that crap for years. Fully-trained, fully qualified, and the only reason I have to go to SNCO Academy is to tack on another stripe so I can get more retirement pay. I do not envy you."

Young people aren't resilient, and that's a big issue. I don't think it's about them thinking their shit don't stink, I think it's that they can recover from a mistake because no one taught them how.

-------

When we were in Basic we knew we were over the hump when we figured out the tag team drill - be on a road march and notice on drill fall back a bit then have another drill jog up from the rear fresh... before the next road march while the drills are around the corner bull shitting and having morning smoke one of the guys picks up the platoon drill's large overstuffed ruck and says, "Hey, hey must have a pillow in here", "naw, packing peanuts"...

It was a lot more 'fun' from there on out.

244 The philosophy of TQM is sound, especially the
tenets of taking care of a problem at the lowest level possible and

246 Young people aren't resilient, and that's a big issue. I don't think it's about them thinking their shit don't stink, I think it's that they can recover from a mistake because no one taught them how.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at September 21, 2019 08:22 AM (cfSRQ)

You worded that better than I. Thinking their shit don't stink came from growing up and getting participation trophies. The military is more of a meritocracy than they have ever dealt with.

It's not just enlisted, either. A 2LT just killed himself at Shaw AFB.

Posted by: Bill R. at September 21, 2019 08:30 AM (wzzJf)

247 The military changed rapidly from the late 80s to the 90s. It went from asking if you are gay and if so take a hike and basically no women at all if you are infantry to something else. I have always supported women in the military and still do. But it is odd for some of us to see mixed basic training etc. It was not that long ago when that did not happen. At least that is true with the infantry.

262 Why are we spending money on K12 schools if the end is just 12 years away? I can see maybe for the kids that are 15 or 16, you let them finish. But the rest of the kids need to be sitting at home, in the dark, no AC or Heating.

Take every school bus off the road. Every soccer mom in a leased SUV.

Lets get serious and make some bold moves. Pay the teachers out the rest of the year or have classes and teach them to code.
