Of Course We Hate Government Employees: They Represent Everything Bad In Our COuntry (Except The Media/Entertainment Complex)

It's "Reason," so the subtext is because government won't let them smoke marijuana while overseeing their H1Bs. But the point stands...more and more people seem to be expressing their contempt of and dislike for government. And to the liberals who squawk about it, I have to bite back, "tough shit. What the hell did you think was going to happen when you voted for big government? Are you really that stupid?"
Government Employees Think People Hate Them. Increasingly, They're Right

"People actively hate us," one recently retired U.S. Border Patrol agent complains in a New York Times piece on morale and recruitment problems at the federal agency. In El Paso, an active duty agent admitted he and his colleagues avoid many restaurants because "there's always the possibility of them spitting in your food."
That sounds as much like a breakdown of civility than as hatred of government, but I certainly understand the feeling.

The contempt for the taxpayer and the pleasure of control just oozes from many government functionaries with whom I have dealt for many years. But as government grows, their reach grows apace. When government was smaller, we simply didn't have to deal with these people as much.

But now? The Leviathan indeed!

But the reaction shows that America is composed of two nations that absolutely -hate- each other. Given how leftists are destroying the memory of the Confederates who fought for their homes, the South is not likely to accept being enslaved by another false peace designed to destroy their culture. This one will be war to the hilt.

Tell you what. When government employees are subject to the expectations, responsibility and consequences that those in the private sector are subject to, I'll respect them more.

When they start treating the public like customers whose confidence they need to maintain instead of subjects they can treat any way they want, I'll respect them more.

When they start treating the public purse as something precious and delicate instead of an infinitely expanding sack of cash, I'll respect them more.

No doubt many public employees do. Unfortunately, I rarely run across them.

55 I hate to say but local government employees are the worst. I think some of it has to do with the trend that they isolate themselves from the community. Cops only socialize with cops, teachers only socialize with teachers, bureaucrats don't socialize, etc., etc. There was a time not to long ago where the local department heads insisted more or less that the employees join a local service club. It did a few things, it showed them giving something back to their communities and forced them to socialize with regular citizens in a non-work related setting. That's all gone now.

True, but this shows that the MSM still wields the power and no amount of talk radio or Fox News (which isn't that conservative anymore) can counteract it.

There is no way Trump can become personally popular. If the economy improves and he doesn't do anything stupid on twitter, I could see his job approval topping out at 47% (in the major polls, not rasmussen).

78 "They are 'earning' huge six figure pensions for life"

Well, I seem to have totally missed that gravy train. According to the most recent figures I got from the IL State Employees Retirement System, (leaving aside for now the issue of whether the pension will still exist in a decade or so) I can expect about $1,400 a month if I were to retire at age 60 (not planning on it). That's $16,800 a year, which of course is better than a lot of other people have, but hardly "huge". And that's assuming it even still exists by the time I retire.

Most of the six-figure pension horror stories, at least at the state level, involve educators who got big salary spikes at the end of their careers, or police/fire pensioners who ran up lots of overtime and/or unused sick/vacation time that they cashed in on when they retired. It also helps to have started working for the gubmint right out of college or military service instead of waiting until your mid 40s like I did.

"Oh please" yourself. I don't hate Alyssa Milano "personally" or anybody else with whom I haven't had some personal interaction or who hasn't done material damage to my life or my country.

My point was that many people who "hate" Donald Trump "personally" have never seen or heard him outside a remote and distorted filter, and in such a way which analogizes some distortion of what he's said or proposed with his supposedly hate-worthy character.

From all I've heard, Donald Trump is a magnanimous spirit, but to learn this you must escape the oppressive ubiquity of the MSM and their twisted Narratives.

92 Ah, "Reason" magazine, paving the way for plutocrats to rule us all.

Won't it be great when government is so tiny that the corporations can make all our decisions for us?

I used to read their web site, but it's now clear to me that four groups formed the core of the Libertarian Establishment:

1. Druggies
2. Perverts
3. Communists
4. Plutocrats

The first two are pretty obvious, but the Communist connection comes from the fact that the Communists were the chief beneficiaries of "free speech" movements and attacks on censorship. Now that they're gaining power, suddenly "hate speech" is an issue and must be crushed.

Finally, it was always the plutocrats ponying up the cash to fund Libertarian Fonzie and his fellow LARPers. Their "free movement of labor" plank always made zero sense in a Welfare State, but now they've figured out how to implement it without a single law being passed.

Trump pointed that out, moved to stop it and suddenly the Koch family decided that Republicans Are The Worst.

They have a vested interest in getting the military to raise the BAH for the area, they have no motive for efficiency, they have a literally captive customer base, and since the ones who have the most sway on base (higher-ranking officers) never have to deal with housing contractors, they can screw over the enlisted any time they please.

108 Most of the six-figure pension horror stories, at least at the state level, involve educators who got big salary spikes at the end of their careers, or police/fire pensioners who ran up lots of overtime and/or unused sick/vacation time that they cashed in on when they retired. It also helps to have started working for the gubmint right out of college or military service instead of waiting until your mid 40s like I did.

Posted by: Secret Square at September 22, 2019 12:56 PM (9WuX0)
-----------------------------------

I don't know what area of govt you work in, but yes the horror stories are mostly based on education bureaucrats and teachers. And I'm not picking on you personally, I'm looking at the math.

Chicago teachers are about to go on strike, even though they are approaching $100K a year salary. Teachers in the 8-county (not sure, it used to be 6 county but Chi-town is gobbling up counties into its orbit at a fast clip) area all have starting salaries over $50K and once in the system the lane/step system gets you near $100K right quick.

School systems are the biggest employers in just about any town or suburb. All govt employees added together are almost always the biggest group of employed persons anywhere in the USA in any jurisdiction. Mostly can't be fired and mostly can't have their compensation diminished.

To use the greenies term, it's not sustainable. The few can't continue to support the many.

There is effectively no escape. Or just being friends with them. If I had my career to do over, I would not have left a certain corporate job where I was buddies with the heir, who is now President and CEO of the company. I left because the job I had wasn't challenging enough.

158 Government is so big that "government employee" can mean so many different things. --

There are bureaucrats. Most of them are conscientious and benign. I don't see any ill will toward them.

There are social workers. These are the people who can deny benefits -- or worse, cancel benefits. As perverse as it is, welfare is the client's livelihood. Of course social workers are hated. It's unfair but understandable.

There are police officers. They're military people who see everyone else as their enemy. The only surprise here is that it's taking so long to reciprocate the sentiment.

There are public works employees. Everyone complains about them, which is kind of unfair. These people, especially the snowplow drivers, are truly underappreciated.

Posted by: MW

I agree - - I'm very confused about this post.

The linked NYTimes article is a bunch of communist agitprop to delegitimize ICE, part of their attempt to erase the border between Mexico and the US, so as to overwhelm US voters with illegals who vote, thereby ensuring (if the plan goes as scheduled) a leftist US government forever.

The article is not about "hating US government employees" but rather about hating a specific agency -- trying to "otherize" them and make it acceptable, proper and normal for NY liberals to reject the existence of ICE (and thus of the border).

Sure, people in general hate lazy government office workers in general. But hating ICE is basically like hating the military. Should we hate soldiers in the Army because they'e "government employees"? The left would say "Yes." But sensible people pick and choose which category of employees are unlikeable.

255 There are two things that have to be kept in mind at all times, unfortunately our society is always forgetting or trying to deny either one or the other:

1. Stereotypes of people by racial, ethnic, gender, religious, or professional groups exist for a reason; they are not invented out of thin air and have to have at least SOME truth to them or people would never believe them in the first place.

2. That said, NO stereotype ever automatically applies to ALL members of a group, and people still have to be judged as individuals.

In the bad old days of overt discrimination by race, ethnicity, etc., people forgot #2, which caused serious injustice to many individuals. But the present day PC crowd wants us to forget or deny #1 -- which forces people to deny reality and/or personal experience. Believe in #1 without #2 and you get official discrimination; believe in #2 without #1 and you generate the kind of resentment and lack of accountability that, eventually, leads back to #1.

What they actually meant by 'privatize' was monopolize - to turn over operation of base housing to virtually sole source contractors and a long duration contract at that.

299 "You mean when Women and minorities were discriminated against?

Instead of today, when its White Males who are being discriminated against?"

Yes, which actually proves the point I was trying to make. The PC/woke crowd has no problem at all stereotyping whites, males, or white males without exception while at the same insisting that any stereotype of women, persons of color, gays, etc. constitutes double plus ungoodthink that cannot be tolerated.

And in a strange sort of way they are STILL stereotyping women, POCs, gays, etc. and assuming they all think alike; for example, when was the last time that the Left even bothered to acknowledge the existence of pro-life women, or conservative POC? Or when they do, they brand such persons as "traitors" to their race, gender, etc.?

Pro tip: if you have MLB.TV, one option is to just have game sounds, no commentary at all.

Useful for when Jessica Mendoza is the commentator, or when the commentators decide to plumb the depths of stupidity.

....

What if you were retarded and didn't know you are retarded so you thought everyone else was mean beacause they didn't listen to your retarded statements?

And what if some people that weren't retarded gave you a microphone and said "Hey everyone, listen to this guy" even though they know you are a retard?

It's sad, the way they manipulate the mentally retarded. Cruel, really. A bit like telling a retard that their puppy is gonna die because mean men are coming to kill it and then watching the retarded retard cry and go crazy because they believe that someone is coming to kill their puppy.

So basically it's retards and sadists that enjoy upsetting retards.

307 They can't even count the number of laws that the bureaucracy makes or has made.

We need a EO from Trump telling every department to count the laws they've made and enforce and if they don't then deny them the ability to enforce any laws in the future.

We need some Law/Regulation Control and we need that overview at least so that redundant and unconstitutional laws/Regs can be eliminated.

This can only happen with a Republican President and Congress.

$120 - well worth it! They have condensed games (circa 5-8 minutes each) shortly after a game finishes, so you can catch the gist of every game that day, if you want.

They do a good job on condensing them, too. It's not just the home runs, but some strikeouts and great plays in the field, along with some routine ones, so it kind of feels like a real game.

319 "MLB-TV?? Do I look like I'm made of money!?"

For the remainder of the 2019 season/postseason, MLB-TV is offering its online streaming service at $27/month for all teams and $16/month if you only want to follow one team.

The catch is that MLB-TV observes local "blackouts", meaning that if you want to see games involving a team in your media market (e.g. you live in Chicago and follow the Cubs) you can't see the games live -- you have to wait until 90 minutes after the game ends to see it. However, if you have a favorite team and you live outside their media market (e.g., St. Louis Cardinals fan living in Arizona), the one-team MLB streaming deal will give you all their games live.

324 I worked at Focus on the Family in the 90s. The papers would publish lies about us, the USPS would refuse to send out our newsletters, we would get thrown out of restaurants if we forgot to remove our name tags, our cars (which had parking stickers) would be vandalized, and our campus was egged every weekend. Someone even plastered downtown with "Lion Chow" posters, referring to the days when Christians were thrown to the lions.

Our crime? We were supposedly intolerant. Because our mission was to support the health of families.

So this persecution of decency has been going on for awhile.

That is about what my B.S. required to NOT be in math/science/engineering.

With about 3-1/2 years required in math/science/engineering there was no such thing as a four year degree (unless you somehow slipped in an extra semester in there somewhere).
