They've been losing money for at least 25 years now. But still. Karma. The NYT itself will be next most likely. Lefty media concerns are beginning to collapse, finally. Get woke, go broke is true even true for them. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 18, 2019 04:01 PM (KZzsI) Meh, it merely lists that "Mr. and Mrs. Barack Obama" had a son on August 4. It was weird, newspapers skyrocketed in sales and ad revenues in the 90s up to a peak in the very first years of the new millennium, then collapsed. There's really no way to bring back those golden years, but if newspapers became focused very tightly on the best possible accurate reporting of local issues and events they'd do a lot better.
Its way easier to get news about things happening around the world than your own home town. Newspapers could fill that gap. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 18, 2019 04:13 PM (KZzsI) Posted by: Kap'n Bill Kristol at September 18, 2019 04:13 PM (u//oP) 168

The birth announcement is in archives of the local Hawaiian newspaper, there's really no question he was born in there. The real question is who was the dad, and was he listed as black or white on his birth certificate? And what was his name actually listed as?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 18, 2019 04:01 PM (KZzsI) My guess has always been that the original Birth Certificate had to be "disappeared" because it was for a White kid named Barry Dunham. Yeah, that's my thought as well. Its not exotic, its not black, and he's so laser-like fixated on the illusion he created that he cannot allow even the slightest variation from the myth. And as they say, never give up the con. As for the Kenya stuff, well he created that by claiming he was from Kenya and getting into college based on that with what probably was a fake passport. No matter where he was born he was a US citizen at birth since his mom was a US citizen.
Posted by: Lurking Lurker It wasn't as simple as that back in '61. There were a whole lot of "things" that had to fall into place in a specific order for that to be valid. We covered that in detail back in '08. If that was the case, there would have been no question as to McCain's citizenship since his mom and dad were citizens. What shut that down was being born in the Panama Canal Zone on a US Military base which WAS US Territory. Posted by: rickb223 at September 18, 2019 04:33 PM (Z65m4) 304

The far more interesting black hole in his life story is that literally nobody can prove he attended Columbia.
Posted by: Ian S. Obummer claimed that he paid his way at Columbia with student loans. I remember quite clearly what financial aid was available at Columbia at that time. I didn't go because I didn't want debt, but even so, the maximum student loans didn't even cover tuition, much less the cost of living in New York. The need for a specifcally Spanish-language NYTimes was nil to begin with.
Anyone with a computer can just hit the "Translate this page" button, set your lamguages preferences, and boom -- any news story you want translated into any language you want. I imagine that anyone who only speaks Spanish and zero English and who also wants to read the NYTimes simply has "English-Spanish" translation turned on al all times, so they can see the whole paper in Spanish anyway. No need to limit themselves to condescending "Spanish only" content curated to appeal to what the pasty-white NYTimes editors thinks will appeal to such an audience -- taco recipes, how to avoid ICE raids, Frida Kahlo retrospective in Spanish Harlem, etc. Posted by: zombie at September 18, 2019 04:36 PM (Q3dyo) 318

The Times of Israel reports: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Wednesday he would not travel to New York for the UN's annual General Assembly later this month after failing to secure sufficient support in elections to form a new government with his right-wing political allies. Netanyahu's office said he would forgo the trip due to the current "political circumstances," without elaborating. It will be the first time Netanyahu has skipped the General Assembly since 2010, when then-foreign minister and current political nemesis Avgidor Liberman addressed world leaders at the forum. Foreign Minister Israel Katz, a member of the ruling Likud party, will attend in Netanyahu's stead, the Prime Minister's Office said. The General Assembly opens this year on September 24, a day before the Central Elections Committee is to present the final results from Tuesday's election to President Reuven Rivlin. The president has until October 2 to task a lawmaker with assembling a government. the strength of the media in Israel I heard Posted by: artisanal 'ette at September 18, 2019 04:36 PM (vEIlU) 323

Funny thing is, I don't think there's any shame in that; indeed, it could be spun as an up-by-my-bootstraps story. I think the secret about Harvard is that he was admitted as an Indonesian. He did travel to Pakistan on some kind of passport, and there's no record that he had a US passport at that age, so it makes sense that Barry Soetero would claim to be an Indonesian student when applying to Harvard. He actually did very well there academically and had a shot at being #1 in his class going into his 3L year, so it's not his grades that they're hiding.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette After reading a bunch of articles about the stalemate today, I figured out what's going on: Overall, the conservative/relgious/right-wing parties combined are still about 60% of the Knesset. The left-wing/Arab parites combined are about 40% of the Knesset. So what's the problem? There's a huge rift on the right-wing side, and they can't get along or form a coalition together. The core problem within the 60% conservative camp is a major split between the religious conservatives and the secular right-wingers. The biggest secular party absolutely refuses to sit down with the two biggest religious parties, in a dispute over how religious the government should, and over military exemption for Yeshiva students, which basically means all Orthodox 18-year-olds. So the leader of the second-place secular right-wing party - Liberman -- is holding out and refusing all alliances, in the narcisisstic ambitious hope that HE will be named "compromise Prime Minister." But there is no calculus that ANY kind of coalition can be formed to create a stable government, left-wig OR right-wing. Because Liberman not only refuses to join up with Netanyahu, but also refuses to join up with the Arab parties. And the secular conservatives plus JUST the left is still under 50%. So there's no way any coalition can ever reach 50%, which under their system mean paralysis and stalemate, Basically, the whole county is up the creek. Dear Raimondo,
President Donald Trump's re-election campaign launched a "Make Campus Great Again" program for the fall, and College Democrats aren't happy about it. The program kicked off at the University of Akron on Monday, with more than 50 students from that school and Cleveland State University, Walsh University, and Kent State University gathered at an event to show support for Trump and get trained on registering voters for the 2020 election. The program is managed by Trump Victory, a joint fundraising entity between the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee, working with the Ohio Federation of College Republicans. The two groups teamed up to launch a Trump Victory Leadership Initiative throughout Ohio colleges and universities to train and recruit campus activists for the president's re-election efforts. Best wishes. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at September 18, 2019 04:47 PM (vEIlU) 397

Yes. It's an elected position. You get on Law Review by grades, and his grades, as noted, were very good. When election occurs late in the second year, it is totally political. Ironically, he made it by telling the small but not insignificant conservative bloc that he would be fair, which he was.

Christopher, I never personally saw his grades, but I know 2 members of the faculty who at the time were very open about who was at the top of the class academically. Assuming you take all easy electives to get A's, that comes down to performance on first-year core course exams, which are graded blind. Taking a law school exam is a specialized skill that requires being able to look at a complex fact pattern and say, "The answer is A under Jones v. Smith's principle of XYZ, unless the ABC rule established by Black v. White prevails, in which case the answer is B, which may be limited by the holding in Green v. Blue," and then writing an essay explaining that answer. Taking a law school exam has only tangential relevance to actually doing a job as a lawyer.
