We're wondering why he wasn't named "Commissioner Bele" (if not "Frank Gorshin) from the famous Star Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" (sorry, can't seem to get just the image itself -- likely intentional) -- anyway, it might make for some interesting viewing & commentary in the Pet Thread:

This is our new friend Royal

Hey,

Long time lurker, I think the only time I have posted was when John Kerry was running for President and lied about running the Boston Marathon. I called them and they sent me a reply saying he never did.

My wife and I have always been lucky and had neighbors with pets. Then we swapped dog sitting when vacationing. A few of our other friends are allowed to bring their dogs to us when they go away. Recently a friend’s mother went into a downward spiral and they tried to take their dog to a shelter, but they refused him. We brought him over to see how he got on with my dog and they basically ignored each other. So we took him for a week.

The only issue was trying to get him in his crate the first night. He growled and whined, I finally got him in but he was so sad I let him out and he ran upstairs and slept with my son. I was nervous about having a pit bull in the house, but out of all the dogs we have had over he was probably the best and I was sad when he left.

My dog Yogi (he was named after Yogi bear), he is the calmest dog I have ever had.

I love the Pet Thread, and enjoy reading the stories and seeing the other morons pets.

Cheers,
Robert (no idea what my username was)

Thanks for coming out of the lurker shadows and sharing your stories with us. Nothing like having a trusted friend to watch your pets when one leaves. Don't be afraid to post now or in the future.

Hello pet lovers.
Mostly a lurker here, love reading everything on this great site. Thanks to all who contribute, it is truly appreciated.

First picture is LB, he is a Maltese-Shizu, a Malshu.
We rescued him up in Utah 12 years ago, this is how he looked, who could resist. Turned 12 last week

He was in a cage when we rescued him and had sh#t all over his face.
I Will sing to him, I fell in love with you the first time I looked at you with sh#t all over your face.
Has been a wonderful dog. Now has terrible arthritis, could hardly walk, now walks around park twice a day since taking CBD oil for dogs.

Second dog we have had 6 months. This is Nicolas, he is 8 years old and a Shizu mix.
An older lady at our church was going into assisted living and couldn’t take him with her.
Nicolas has been a joy, he has a crooked eye and an underbite, makes you smile just looking at him.
He visits his previous owner at rest home, everyone loves his and LB’s visits.
It is like he has been with us forever. And it is so great that
LB shares his home with him.
Love the Pet Thread. - L.L.

Thanks for the love L.L. Sounds like you have a super big heart when it comes to the helpless little 4 legged friends. Takes a special person to adopt dogs such as these. They look very happy!!

Thanks for always being there.

Condolences on your Mother's illness. It sounds like Rocky is quite the cat. This photo shows the love between your Mom and Rocky. Thanks for sharing.

kittehes.jpg

Longtime lurker, very occasional poster. For the last 20 years or so, the Bubbas have been feeding, taming, and finding homes for and adopting neighborhood feral cats. Most of them take about year or so of feeding and talking before they tame up enough to handle, but these three took only about 10 minutes. They had just been weened and were maybe 3 weeks old, location and ID of mother unknown, just these three trying to hiss, spit, and look mean. Although we were terrified of their cuteness, we got them fed, settled, inoculated, and spoiled. Counter clockwise from left is Boo, Critter, and Calamity Jane. They join 5 other feline felons in the Bubba household. Next time I’ll send a few pics of the older crowd. Thank you Mis Hum for the thread. We look forward to it each week. - Sign me Bama Bubba

OK Horde. Are these kittehs adorable or not?!? How dang cute!!! I can see why you kept all 3. Appreciate the submission and thank you for your kind words.

Attached is Lillie; I thought I was buying a couch for myself to sit
upon, but little did I know! Lillie is a rescue of unknown mixture, but
the vet and I suspect there's a large amount of both German Shorthair
Pointer and Carolina Dog in her DNA. - Best, Bert G

I bet Lillie also has a little Couch Hog Dog DNA besides the Pointer and Carolina Dog. She looks like a big sweetie who can do no wrong. Thanks for sharing today Bert.

IMG_2344.jpg

Flash was born around eight years ago in the woodpile in the neighbors backyard. I couldn't take him in at the time, because I was already at max cat capacity. We put food outside for him and other ferals, and during the winter, insulated shelters. He ranged all over the neighborhood, up to four blocks away. Last winter, I was carrying in groceries, and he followed me into the house, so now he's joined my collection of indoor-only foundling cats, and he is VERY happy to be here. He has feline AIDS, and a healed injury to his lower jaw. He's very sweet and gentle, a music lover, and always first at mealtimes. I love my cats more than anything else in the world. - gp

Even Flashes need to take a break? I wonder how many lives Flash used before inviting himself into your home. Your love for cats is evident. Thanks for sharing.

pepper.jpg

This is our beloved Pepper. He was rescued from a local shelter, we took him in at 11 months old. He lived to be fifteen, until his back gave out last year. He had the good grace to hold off dying until we buried my 95 year old father. Pepper died three weeks later. Such a mannered little being.

He was an Aussie black lab mix. I have had purebred G. Shepards, (3), purebred labs (3), and none, NONE, were ever the dog this good boy was.

Where ever we went, that’s where he wanted to be. This picture is after a search/rescue operation, we were sorting out the gear. Apparently he thought if he laid down on top, we would never leave him. We never did. He is our best good boy,
forever.

Love the pet thread!
D

And those 15 years blew by like nothing didn't they? Sounds like a heart dog if I ever heard of one. Sorry about his passing but glad you shared his story with us. Thank you.

Good luck with the decoy keyboard. I tried it.

What I tried was, when my laptop fried, I opened it up and "gave" it to my cat. I put it next to my new laptop so the cat could sit on a keyboard complete with a monitor.

No dice. It's not so much the keyboard, it's where your hands are. The cat ignored its own laptop and sat on crawled across my typing fingers as usual.

10 All cute puppehs and kittehs!

I love all of you who rescue. We bought our dogs, because we don't have a solid record of dog ownership and rescue organizations are super uppity about who they let adopt. I get that, to an extent, but we have time, space, and money enough. No one would give us the time of day.

20 Always thought that dogs just assumed the world shrinks as they get older.

My girls (2 inseparable siblings) would dive under a particular chair chasing each other - running at full tilt. Then they'd play fight underneath it - their little fort and hideaway.

I remember the day they suddenly had a massive pile-up when the chair was suddenly about half an inch too low. Diving under it became increasingly hard, and soon it took a lot of scooching and only one could fit comfortably.

Soon, the chair was just too small to fit under any longer, so the nose worked for a while. Sometime around then they decided that being on top of the chair was actually pretty cool, now they could see outside!

21 We feed and house a feral cat, at his convenience, of course. When we got the puppies a few months ago, he got skittish again and we thought he'd leave. But lately, he's more attentive to us. We were amused and delighted when he started tagging along on walkies!

Depending on your browser, you can kill 90% of the ads on YT without an ad blocker. Just modify your HOSTS file.

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

This place has a free app that will run. Basically, the HOSTS file on your PC is an empty folder. This ads literally hundreds of known servers for ads and malware. Your PC looks to the folder, sees the bad website, and won't allow that site to serve up ads (or other nasty things). Best part is, it doesn't show as an ad blocker. Even those little pop-up boxes on YT are suddenly empty frames with a little "X" on the top right to close it.

Highly recommended app for internet safety. They have a better explanation of how it works than I do. Been around for ages.

Having eyes with irises in two different colors is called heterochromia (from the Greek words for "different" and "color")-- it's not a medical problem and it doesn't affect the cat's sight. Some humans have heterochromia. In cats, there are two types: complete heterochromia, in which each eye is a different solid color; and sectoral heterochromia, in which the iris in each eye is divided into two different colors. 31 9-11 SAR dogs had me in tears. Doggie heros.

Beautiful pets this week. A couple of those kitties look so much like the Noodle when she was little that it makes me sad. She's 15 now and moving slowly, and sometimes when she sits on her haunches her front paws seem to tremble a little bit. Do they make that CBD oil for cats? Is that a medicine or an ointment?

32 M'doggie had a major puke this morning. It was huge. Took her outside where she ate grass and puked, ate some more grass and puked.
Finally the puking slowed down, she started prancing around the yard like she owned it, did some random barking and tried to jump on my lap and kiss me.
I felt like the father of a sick two year old., a furry two year old.

44 31 Do they make that CBD oil for cats? Is that a medicine or an ointment?

Here is a link to an article (from a site I trust) about CBD oil for cats. I would second the article's advice to talk to your vet first before giving any to the Noodle.

https://tinyurl.com/yxdx732c

Full disclosure: I had to do some research on CBD just a few months ago because I work as a medical writer/editor for a company that publishes encyclopedias in the health care field. As part of my research, I decided to check out online websites that sell CBD oil, and the stuff is way pricey. But if your vet says it would be okay to give some to your kitteh-- and can give you an idea of the appropriate dose (very important)-- it might help.

51 New Old Dog has an issue where he uses those little front teethies to chew carpet edges, upholstery edges, and anything else he can 'claim' as not owned by one of his persons. I am finally getting him to not pick apart the crate bedding -- his purported 'owner' is contemplating a new mattress for the crate -- and I am irritated about the whole thing because he yaakkes it up when he nibbles. Bless his heart, he does not chew kid toys, and he is careful with the dog toys because Terrible Goddess likes chewing and tugowar.

I really worry about him and the fabric bits (because cleaning it up is worse than if he made a feces mess) and if he will have the 'bloat' thing even though he is only 65lbs.

If Quimera has the temperament associated with tortie cats-- "Tortietude," well known to humans who are owned by one-- she may be a handful on occasion. My Coco is a dilute tortie (fur colors are a soft cream, grey, and beige rather than dark black and brown), and she knows just how to handle Casey, even though he's 1) a dude cat; and 2) larger than she is.

I'd say it's no miracle, but it does help. Except first thing in the morning, he can get up the back-yard steps with no help, and that's a definite improvement. He has two more weeks on the "loading" dosage, so I'm hoping for further improvement.

Still want a vet appointment for him, though.

68 I don't agree with the notion that beyond a certain age, wild cats can't be tamed. Cats are intelligent and will adapt to a situation, especially one that benefits them.

I subscribe to the possibility that some individual cats may be untamable. But time alone is not a deciding factor.

76 I laugh at the baby Rottie because as far as anyone can tell, by the time you see a Rottie's teeth it is too late.

The big grins (usually with tongue hanging sideways) are the only time you would ever see a Rottie's teeth.

89 My Morgan Stanley investment advisor back in 2001 had a trained cadaver do--a Sheltie. You'd go to his office to talk with him, and the dog was in a crate behind the desk. They went to the World Trade Center to work. (It's a long haul from Los Angeles to NYC--but so be it). The work was hard on both the man and the dog.

I have never heard of chocolate being poison for parrots. Dogs, yes. And how much actual chocolate is in one of those "chocolate fountains", anyway? Precious little, I'd expect.

And I don't think WD posed and took the picture, or that it was posed at all. The bird got where it wasn't supposed to be, and somebody with a camera saw a funny situation and took a picture. Nobody here is going to run out and pose their pet in a chocolate fountain just so WD can have a funny pic to post.

OTOH, if I had a pet bear, I'd totally have him ride shotgun in the sidecar of the motorcycle I don't have, either.

114 I was actually surprised to learn that there is an actual breed called 'American Bulldog'. New Old Dog is one. He was well-trained by previous owners and shelter had no qualms about sending him into a household with children. New Old Dog is pretty, black and white, but my biggest problem with him is how slow he is to adapt and pick up cues. Is it stubborn or is it stupid? I have always had clever intuitive dogs, so a fourquare stompy foot has been an adjustment. Even my 'meth' lab was quick and inventive, so New Old Dog is something of a challenge, even as sweet-natured as he is. Family members walk into the house without challenge, so I guess he's not particularly aggressive, but I do worry.

Posted by: mustbequantum at September 14, 2019 05:54 PM (MIKMs)

115 The American Bulldog, if I recall, was once the logo for RCA records, head cocked, one ear up, one down.

120 Basement Cat

We first purchased the CBD oil at a reliable pet store.

Was not that expensive, but we learned that the Piute Indians sold it for pets at their MJ store.
They are very informative and it was stronger and we just had to give him less.

He enjoys his walks at the park, has been going 2 times a day for 12 years, so glad it worked for hm.
He doesn't seem high. LOL

121 Our best dog was also a roadside rescue. No idea what he was, genetically, but he was smart, gentle, obedient, and very healthy until his final illness.

123 Our Dachshund came to us as a result of a drop off to the local humane officer and our Sheltie came to us through a show breeder who had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get her show Sheltie back from a rogue rescue bent on helping animal rights fanatics further their agenda. They are both know they run the show at their house but we wouldn't have it any other way.
