Todd Palin Files for Divorce from Sarah Palin, Citing "Incompatability of Temperament"

Corrected -- I had it backwards, who filed against whom.

Thanks to Cheri.

I've got nothing to say about this and I imagine most of you don't, either, but I guess it deserves a short-duration post.

Todd Palin has filed for divorce from Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska and GOP vice presidential candidate, citing "incompatibility of temperament” and that “they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife."

Todd Palin, 55, asked to dissolve the couple's 31-year marriage in a filing submitted Friday in Anchorage Superior Court. The paperwork was submitted on Aug. 29, eight days after the couple's anniversary.

The filing, first reported by the Anchorage Daily News, only uses initials but details the couple’s marriage date and the birth date of their 11-year-old son, Trig, and asks for an equal separation of assets and debts.

So you're saying I've got a chance...

111 The trend I've been seeing in some divorces--not just in Hollywood but other high profile divorces--is that the husband and wife assure everyone that the decision is no big deal. They issue a joint PR statement that the separation is "amicable"; there's "no bitterness and they remain good friends."

That is, except for the unspoken fact that they can't stand to live together anymore--not even for the sake of the children.

116 That's pretty sad - and like H. Badger said at #17 - if she had any idea of what she would walk into when John McCain offered her a place on the ticket, would she have gracefully turned it down? She had a good, solid local career going in Alaska politics, she had high ratings as a governor ... and the national spotlight and the venomous antipathy of the national media/entertainment complex basically turned her into a punchline. Not to mention apparently trashing her family life.
I have seen speculation here and there that John McCain basically just wanted to lose gracefully; had no serious fire-in-the-belly to win. She was the only reason that he had any chance at all, and his campaign staff pretty much knifed her in the back when she took the whole campaign seriously. They tossed her aside like a used Kleenex. I'd be incandescent with rage at being used in that underhanded manner, were I in her shoes. A promising career in state politics essentially derailed, family life a travesty and now a marriage wrecked.
I guess the only people who can get into politics now must have a cast-iron ego and a damn-near bottomless bank account.

119 i'm going to guess that "mete" comes from french/latin mettre/mettare or whatever, which means "put."

https://www.etymonline.com/word/mete

WRONGO!

mete (v.)
"to allot," Old English metan (West Saxon mæton), "to measure, ascertain the dimension or quantity of; measure out; compare; estimate the greatness of value of" (class V strong verb; past tense mæt, past participle meten), from Proto-Germanic *metana "to measure" (source also of Old Saxon metan, Old Frisian, Old Norse meta, Dutch meten, Old High German mezzan, German messen, Gothic mitan "to measure"),

mete (n.)

by c. 1400, "a goal" (a sense now obsolete); late 15c. (Caxton) "a boundary, limit, boundary mark," from Old French mete "limit, bounds, frontier" and directly from Latin meta "goal, boundary, post, pillar,"

Denis Thatcher was a successful businessman in his own right. In addition, he valued his marriage to the PM because it was his second marriage. Posted by: Sharkman at September 09, 2019 05:00 PM (Mo1SD)

I read a lot of Arthur C. Clarke, I never had any doubt about what the ending meant. But it wasn't exactly an argument for the movie to say "Duh, if you go back and read the stories it's obvious." What he becomes at the end is the entire reason the Obelisks were placed, first on the Earth, and then on the Moon. So the aliens, who had by this time become non-corporeal, could send back someone remade in their image to guide the future development of humanity.

In "Childhood's End", Clarke laid out a tale of what he thought that development could be. Not related to 2001, but it showed how Clarke's mind worked.

152 what is the etymology of wrong?

I want to know if it's at all related to "warlock," which means something like "oath-breaker."

wrong (adj.)
late Old English, "twisted, crooked, wry," from Old Norse rangr, earlier *vrangr "crooked, wry, wrong," from Proto-Germanic *wrang- (source also of Danish vrang "crooked, wrong," Middle Dutch wranc, Dutch wrang "sour, bitter," literally "that which distorts the mouth"), from *wrengh-, nasalized variant of *wergh- "to turn," from PIE root *wer- (2) "to turn, bend."

Sense of "not right, bad, immoral, unjust" developed by c. 1300. Wrong thus is etymologically a negative of right (adj.1), which is from Latin rectus, literally "straight." Latin pravus was literally "crooked," but most commonly "wrong, bad;" and other words for "crooked" also have meant "wrong" in Italian and Slavic. Compare French tort "wrong, injustice," from Latin tortus "twisted."

warlock is unrelated -- apparently it comes from "waer," which means not "wrong" or "crooked" but "TRUE."

warlock (n.)
Old English wærloga "traitor, liar, enemy, devil," from wær "faith, fidelity; a compact, agreement, covenant," from Proto-Germanic *wera- (source also of Old High German wara "truth," Old Norse varar "solemn promise, vow"), from PIE root *were-o- "true, trustworthy." Second element is an agent noun related to leogan "to lie" (see lie (v.1); and compare Old English wordloga "deceiver, liar").

Original primary sense seems to have been "oath-breaker;" given special application to the devil (c. 1000), but also used of giants and cannibals. Meaning "one in league with the devil" is recorded from c. 1300. Ending in -ck (1680s) and meaning "male equivalent of a witch" (1560s) are from Scottish. Related: Warlockery.

They all broke up their marriages because of the celebrity.

Maybe he had a thing on the side, but a key risk factor to a marriage is when the wife out-earns the husband. It's like the biggest single factor in divorce.

Same with status. Women want high-status men and when they get higher status, they lose interest in the one they have.

Sarah should have taken the L and gotten on with being governor. When she quit that gig, she should have just retired from public life. Her family needed her. Her PAC didn't.

180 I suspect ANY guy married to a prominent (female) politician is going to get some ribbing, often far from good natured.

Angela Merkel's husband (her second, and she is his second wife) is a professor of quantum chemistry named Joachim Sauer. My guess is that not too many people want to mess with a German professor in a STEM field.

It's because the Leftie press has nothing else. They have tried. Mueller was a flop. Fat Jerry Nadless is making a fool of himself with impeachment noise. The GHod Squad has more shit on them than a San Francisco sidewalk.

Problem is that Trump is tweeting down and keeping it alive. Just STFU, Mr President. Quit punching down, no matter how easy it is, or how they piss you off.

186 I don't think she's really that particularly interested in politics anymore, which you can't blame her, the nazguls, both among the nutroot left and the top men right in Alaska, tore at her, the enquirer was particularly brutal, McCain turned out to be nearly as nasty as he was with his first wife, to someone that accepted the call of duty, re the memo, which I forgot the name of, her son saw hard tours in northern Iraq and southern Afghanistan, and I wonder if she feels guilty for having encouraged him to volunteer,

Her kids had problems, but I wonder how much of those problems stemmed from the way their mom was treated in the press?

I wish they would find a way to work it out though. 31 years is a long time. Best wishes to them.

It was around that time that I saw him in The Birdcage on Broadway. You cannot sing about love and family in a show like that, and be in a loveless marriage. I think it killed his soul a little.

He found a young stewardess after that, had a whirlwind courtship with her and they got married. He seems to be blissfully happy now, he found with her all the love and support he was missing. I don't approve of infidelity, I'm hoping his divorce was final before he dated his current wife. But sometimes when trapped in a toxic marriage, the best remedy is escape. For everyone.

Well, yes and no.

As far as political cred, she was fine but she probably didn't realize how vicious the DC/national MSM would be.

But -

How was she to know McCain was running for Preezy with the goal of losing?

and, even if she'd waited, then next up-

Rombley - another cuck running to lose.

8 years later ...if she'd held onto the governorship or maybe senator.

Then along comes Trump.

Now, that would've been a pretty great combo, if by that point she've been able to bring something to the party, which she couldn't.

Unfortunately, she got scuttled in her political prime becuz she been so effective and electrified the voters at the RNC with her speech. By both the Dims and the Reps.

Sometimes, the change is positive, but it's always damaging, especially for kids. Marriage is hard work and the commitment must be total.

Sadly, that's not what we teach these days, and people look at it as a contract, voided if it's no longer net positive.

I knew my wife for almost 5 years before getting married, we lived together for 3 years. We were practically married already, there was no mysery or surprise once we threw a big party and signed a piece of paper saying we're married.

I suspect a lot of divorces are people who barely know each other when they get married.

The campaign consultants McCain used in 2008, Steve Schmidt et al, are grifters who viewed their task as getting paid to run their candidate for office, not winning the election. They actually seemed to view victory as disruptive to their business model -- better to lose honorably, and then on to the next honorable defeat. When I learned that Romney was using them again in 2012, I felt like a sucker for ever thinking he had a chance.

They are the most insider of establishment insider tools. The Republican establishment hated Sarah Palin, an actual maverick in Alaska, and the '08 campaign crew leaked nasty stories about her to the press in service of that, then used her as a scapegoat for McCain's loss. The reason McCain lost is that nobody involved, including McCain, actually wanted him to win. Except Palin.

Especially if you have a family history of depression. About a year ago, we moved from one home to another (3 miles away!) and I just crashed. Sobbed hysterically for days. What can I say? I'm a homebody and I LOVED that house and neighborhood. The antidepressant probably saved my marriage.

That is supposedly what the anti-Brexit bill was about, to take power away from the PM to do something like that. But the unanswered question - so what do they do if Boris goes ahead and ignores the law and does what he wants? What then?

The obvious answer is dissolve the government, new elections, but they don't want new elections. That's why the situation is insane.

That's a hard pill to swallow, as a nation.

There are no good optics for this, at all. It flat out sucks.

Afghanistan and Iraq are the reasons I am now a "bomb the rubble, make the rubble bounce, turn the bouncing rubble to dust, go home" crowd.

Who would know you and accept you more than the person who has done that for the past thirty years? I expect in such cases it's either infidelity, some major illness in the family which is too draining and/or you don't actually spend any time together. And divorce is hard for kids even if the kids are adults.

Exactly. All those hypocrites that pull the old "I don't want to speak ill of the dead" obviously stay mum about Stalin, Lenin, Hitler and Mao. Fuck that shit. McCain was a miserable cocksucker who destroyed Palin's political future and his dogshit homewrecking second wife and fat slob daughter can't join him in Hell soon enough.

485 "Large water main break? That could really mess up any fire fighting ability.
Lots of gasoline in a vehicle? What happens if you drive that vehicle into a building? A building with no water for fire sprinklers? "

Latest B'More update.

Van had two plastic tanks inside, with hoses and a pump.

Dude was stealing Diesel fuel for a living.

Media reported 1,000 gallons of gas onboard the van.

Final offload was a total of 80 gallons of diesel fuel.

But...we still have the water main break.

Something about "destroying the Village in order to save it" outweighs the Yoda man in my mind.

And yes, I know the media lost Vietnam. But the Taliban, like the Hanoi Politboro, could tolerate 3,000 NVA and DC dead a week and the Washington Congress could not tolerate 200 dead a week.

And even in an all volunteer force some political calculations like that are still going on. Sure, we can keep wiping them out, but at what cost?
Posted by: Curmudgeon at September 09, 2019 06:00 PM (ujg0T)

Trump has stated that he could win the war in a few weeks. He would have to kill ten million, but we could win.

Sounds like someone finally noticed the Taliban are primarily Pashtun, and the Pashtun are primarily Taliban, and both are a large MINORITY in Afghanistan. The majority of Afghanistan is a motley collection of another dozen tribes that hate each other and the Pashtun equally.

One complicating factor, NW Pakistan, the ungovernable territory is primarily Pashtun and Taliban too.

492 I used McCain's pick of Palin in a baseball analogy.

She was a rising star with a lot of promise, but they called her up from AA ball to play in a pennant race she wasn't ready for. Ruined a promising career.

Sarah Palin gave a temporary boost to McCain's campaign that was phoning it in at that point. I think the GOPe expected her VP nomination to completely tank the election. They were massively shocked when it turned out the opposite of what the GOPe "brains" expected and decided that the quislings would work with the Dems to ruin who they looked at like she was Elly Mae Clampett and they couldn't let THOSE people in the club.

True, but the Pashtun are still a plurality I think.

1,000 gallons of gas is about 6,000 pounds of dead weight. I think someone might notice if the van's springs were sagging?

Is the water main break just the usual old infrastructure in a poorly run Democrat city? We have them here in Minneapolis too.

Yep. All valid points. Personally, I think we should have tried to put the Northern Alliance in charge back in 2001, and told the Pashtun they done fucked up supporting Al Qaeda.

Too late now. How do we get out with at least some honor?

500 Divorce is sad. The Palin family has had a rocky trip through the public spotlight with a number of unfair jabs. As I recall Todd Palin worked in the North Slope oil fields (field workers get flown in there from Anchorage for a two week or one month long shift). The North Slope has been winding down and maybe Mr. Palin doesn't have a job there any more.

But if the marriage isn't working and the kids are gone, couples do split. These two aren't the Lone Ranger--and I hope it works out for the best for both of them. Probably won't--but one can hope.

501 I don't much about the Palin's but I will just say this, I don't see how any family could withstand over a decade of intense negative public scrutiny. I don't know why they are are divorcing but I think the constant public scrutiny and unjust public attacks have a lot to do with it. The most important distinction in this country today is not in political philosophy but in social class. Today elites both Republicans and democrats attend the same schools and socialize and marry the same people. The Palin's were not part of that elite group. So much so that every nitwit talking head on cable news felt free to mock Sara Palin's education and intelligence. I wish them well. They represent a strain of American politics that elected Donald Trump and prevented Hillary Clinton from becoming President of the United States. Let me repeat for the hearing impaired; Hillary Clinton will never be President of the United States and for that we should all be grateful.

502 I lived in AK when she was elected governor. The consensus was that she was hot. Went to the AK State Fair and Sweaty Teddy Nugent had some nice things to say about her. Along the lines of "your governor is hot."

Always felt she was not ready for prime time national politics -- like a AA baseball player that needed an extra season or two before jumping to the majors. At one point she was among the three most powerful women in the world (her, Hilldebeast, and Oprah). Those three would command tens of millions of views on anything they said or wrote.

If she had been liberal (or even a pro-choice moderate Republican) she'd have been VP or President by now.

503 I wish them both well. I'm amazed that their marriage survived as long as it did, given the pressure cooker they were in. I've known some divorced couples who were able to work together for the benefit of the kids; I hope for Trig's sake that they'll be able to do that.
