that's the impression I had, except about the zoo. He has previously spoken about the movie being about birthdays in humanity (use of tools, conquest of space, contact with alien species and then the "star baby" which represents humanity becoming an intersteller species.
This stuff jibes with all of that.
People have underscored that hte word "birthday" appears in the movie more times than you'd think was necessary if it weren't part of the theme.

I have seen speculation here and there that John McCain basically just wanted to lose gracefully; had no serious fire-in-the-belly to win. She was the only reason that he had any chance at all, and his campaign staff pretty much knifed her in the back when she took the whole campaign seriously. They tossed her aside like a used Kleenex. I'd be incandescent with rage at being used in that underhanded manner, were I in her shoes. A promising career in state politics essentially derailed, family life a travesty and now a marriage wrecked.
I guess the only people who can get into politics now must have a cast-iron ego and a damn-near bottomless bank account.

I read a lot of Arthur C. Clarke, I never had any doubt about what the ending meant. But it wasn't exactly an argument for the movie to say "Duh, if you go back and read the stories it's obvious." What he becomes at the end is the entire reason the Obelisks were placed, first on the Earth, and then on the Moon. So the aliens, who had by this time become non-corporeal, could send back someone remade in their image to guide the future development of humanity.
In "Childhood's End", Clarke laid out a tale of what he thought that development could be. Not related to 2001, but it showed how Clarke's mind worked.

I have no idea how my childhood best friend's marriage survived after their three-year-old was beaten to death by her babysitter. They don't come to church the week of her birthday or death, so there's definitely still pain for them. But they're active in their other two kids' lives and in the church, so they seem to have moved on somewhat.

My wife used to watch those "Real Housewives" shows and what's interesting about them is that pretty quickly, none of the the women were married.
They all broke up their marriages because of the celebrity.
Maybe he had a thing on the side, but a key risk factor to a marriage is when the wife out-earns the husband. It's like the biggest single factor in divorce.
Same with status. Women want high-status men and when they get higher status, they lose interest in the one they have.
Sarah should have taken the L and gotten on with being governor. When she quit that gig, she should have just retired from public life. Her family needed her. Her PAC didn't.

Kelsey Grammar's wife was on one of those RH show, and he had a cameo. He looked absolutely miserable, could not act his way happy on that show. It was around that time that I saw him in The Birdcage on Broadway. You cannot sing about love and family in a show like that, and be in a loveless marriage. I think it killed his soul a little.
He found a young stewardess after that, had a whirlwind courtship with her and they got married. He seems to be blissfully happy now, he found with her all the love and support he was missing. I don't approve of infidelity, I'm hoping his divorce was final before he dated his current wife. But sometimes when trapped in a toxic marriage, the best remedy is escape. For everyone.

As many here likely already know, divorce doesn't solve problems, it just changes them into different problems.
Sometimes, the change is positive, but it's always damaging, especially for kids. Marriage is hard work and the commitment must be total.
Sadly, that's not what we teach these days, and people look at it as a contract, voided if it's no longer net positive.

I knew my wife for almost 5 years before getting married, we lived together for 3 years. We were practically married already, there was no mysery or surprise once we threw a big party and signed a piece of paper saying we're married.
This is probably very good advice. I hadn't known my wife all that long before we got married but due to extremely low-self esteem and immense pressure from various parties, we got married. Ended up costing me just about everything.

Especially if you have a family history of depression. About a year ago, we moved from one home to another (3 miles away!) and I just crashed. Sobbed hysterically for days. What can I say? I'm a homebody and I LOVED that house and neighborhood. The antidepressant probably saved my marriage.

No idea. I was going back to my hotel after a wedding and stopped in a strip mall because I was hungry. I had an adequate tap beer while I waited, so I had time to look at the crowd, which had a fair number of rather attractive young ladies. The optics of going to Camp David were poor, the meeting should have been scheduled on an aircraft carrier in the region.
As to whether or not we should talk, well you either support staying in Afghanistan forever, or you talk to the Taliban about some way to end it. I suppose there is a 3rd option, do the Vietnam thing and just bug out, leaving all of our supporters there high and dry.

There are no good optics for this, at all. It flat out sucks.
Afghanistan and Iraq are the reasons I am now a "bomb the rubble, make the rubble bounce, turn the bouncing rubble to dust, go home" crowd.
If the US goes to war, we wipe out whomever then come home, sending the message, "don't mess with us, ever again, lest you meet the same fate."
Cheaper in the long run, too.

And yes, I know the media lost Vietnam. But the Taliban, like the Hanoi Politboro, could tolerate 3,000 NVA and DC dead a week and the Washington Congress could not tolerate 200 dead a week.
And even in an all volunteer force some political calculations like that are still going on. Sure, we can keep wiping them out, but at what cost?

Van had two plastic tanks inside, with hoses and a pump.
Dude was stealing Diesel fuel for a living.
Media reported 1,000 gallons of gas onboard the van.
Final offload was a total of 80 gallons of diesel fuel.
But...we still have the water main break.

Sounds like someone finally noticed the Taliban are primarily Pashtun, and the Pashtun are primarily Taliban, and both are a large MINORITY in Afghanistan. The majority of Afghanistan is a motley collection of another dozen tribes that hate each other and the Pashtun equally.
One complicating factor, NW Pakistan, the ungovernable territory is primarily Pashtun and Taliban too.

Always felt she was not ready for prime time national politics -- like a AA baseball player that needed an extra season or two before jumping to the majors. At one point she was among the three most powerful women in the world (her, Hilldebeast, and Oprah). Those three would command tens of millions of views on anything they said or wrote.
If she had been liberal (or even a pro-choice moderate Republican) she'd have been VP or President by now.
