In Case You Missed It: Black Novelist Walter Moseley, Writer of "Easy Rawlins" Detective Series, Quits Star Trek After SJW Rats on Him to Human Resources For Just Attempting to Tell a Story

Arthur K. posted this over the weekend.

Walter Moseley is the author of the Easy Rawlins series, about a black detective in 1940s/50s LA. In the mid-nineties, Denzel Washington played the character in an adaptation of the book Devil in a Blue Dress.

So he's a writer who also has his hand in cinematic endeavors. As well as a screenwriter.

Walter Moseley was hired to help write the very, very bad Star Trek: Discovery in season 3. From almost all accounts, it's a terrible show heavy on #Woke politics and light on actual Star Trek. They desperately need real writers.

The story Walter Moseley told in the writers room was, I'm guessing, an offering of a plot seed. He discussed an old-time's account casual, practical, non-malicious racism -- the questions that would be raised are these: If an authority keeping the peace routinely tramples people's rights, but with the goal of stopping internecine violence, should that authority be dismantled? Even if it comes at the cost of civil war? At what price ideals?

Seems to raise the sort of questions that Star Trek used to raise.

It's not the greatest idea ever, but 1, it hasn't been fleshed out yet, it's just a germ of an idea to get the creative process going and 2, even if the idea were ultimately rejected -- so what? The whole point of brainstorming is to pump out dozens of ideas, many of which will either be mediocre, half-baked, or outright bad.

There are no bad ideas in a brainstorming session, as they say.

Well -- except when snowflake SJWs are around.

Moseley relayed the story using the old-timey cop's casually racial language -- which I would insist is a valid choice, because that language is suggestive of a time and place and prevailing attitude that "African-American" would not be.

There's a big difference, when writing a Medieval-set story, using the words "central communal trash pit" and the word "middens."

Word choice matters. Writers ought to know that.

An SJW , probably contributing nothing but Progressive Stack points, didn't know that, and ratted to human resources about it.

And then human resources lectured Moseley.

And then Moseley said "F*** y'all, I'm quitting, you're totalitarian monster babies."

And then he wrote an editorial, almost a manifesto, demanding the right to free speech.

Sources note that HR called Mosley to inform the acclaimed writer and novelist that typical use of that word was a fireable offense but there was to be no course of action taken against him. Instead, HR informed Mosley that a writer in the room was uncomfortable with it and effectively wanted to ensure he was aware of the studio's policy.

"Earlier this year, I had just finished with the Snowfall writers’ room for the season when I took a similar job on a different show at a different network. I’d been in the new room for a few weeks when I got the call from human resources. A pleasant-sounding young man said, 'Mr. Mosley, it has been reported that you used the n-word in the writers’ room,'" Mosley wrote in the Times. "I replied, 'I am the N-word in the writers’ room.'"

Mosley went on to explain that the individual in HR said that while he was free to use that word in a script, he "could not say it." Mosley then clarified, "I hadn’t called anyone it. I just told a story about a cop who explained to me, on the streets of Los Angeles, that he stopped all n---ers in paddy neighborhoods and all paddies in n---er neighborhoods, because they were usually up to no good. I was telling a true story as I remembered it."

...

'
"My answer to HR was to resign and move on. I was in a writers' room trying to be creative while at the same time being surveilled by unknown critics who would snitch on me to a disembodied voice over the phone," he wrote. "My every word would be scrutinized. Sooner or later I’d be fired or worse -- silenced."

While Mosley did not say he was immediately threatened with termination, he ultimately decided to leave the show. "My answer to HR was to resign and move on. I was in a writers’ room trying to be creative while at the same time being surveilled by unknown critics who would snitch on me to a disembodied voice over the phone," he wrote. "My every word would be scrutinized. Sooner or later I’d be fired or worse — silenced."

Yes, exactly -- they mean to serve as the Watchers in the Panopticon they've built for us.

Someone on the Midnight's Edge YouTube podcast pointed out an angle I think is probably right -- this all happened months ago. So why is Moseley only talking about it now?

The answer offered was: Because Dave Chappelle had "started a conversation" -- you know, the kind of conversation leftwingers are always claiming they want to start -- and it's having a snowball effect of people saying "Enough is enough."

I've seen 1.2 seasons of this show. I gave up because they honestly don't know how to tell stories at all.

Like, characters, plot progression, tone, theme. It's all jumbled at it's absolute best and pretty much non-existent the rest of the time.

It's the worst Star Trek has ever been. Ever.

And I remember most of Seasons 1-3 of Voyager.

There are a lot of legacy Dems in NC that vote Gop.

The Gop almost always loses the EV turnout.

12 I think I read, or started to read, one of Moseley's novels about black private eye Easy Rawlings. Easy is no Shaft; he has more in common with Philip Marlowe than he does Richard Roundtree's character. I can't recall if I finished the novel, though. It seemed well-written enough.

On the one hand, it's nice to see even the latest Trek series using print authors. On the other hand, well, SJWs.

22 Good for him.

The fact that he was simply telling a story, using the "n word" colloquially (i.e. not directing it at anyone in the room, etc.) makes it even worse.

Like the black musician who has a track record of deprogramming KKK members being called a "white supremist" by Pantifa idiots at the MINDS summit, this silliness has got to be taking its toll.

How many normies, of all colors, have had enough of this craziness and will say, "Buh-bye" to the Democrat party, I wonder. . .

Holy shit. My absolute favorite bit of garbage from the first season is how it ends. It's so awful.

They've spent the entire season intentionally shitting on Star Trek, it's ideals, it's story structures, it's history, and everything else about it. It's war, fighting, and punching. Into Darkness to 11.

And then the main character has an impassioned speech about the Federation being peaceful.

It's so hilariously bad.

Who made Star Trek about fighting Klingons and the like? This very show! And then this very show has the gall to speechify about how that's not real Star Trek, admonishing someone (I really don't know who) about the Federation (re: Star Trek) losing its way.

It's one of the most beautifully awful moments of cognitive dissonance I've ever seen.

I like Dave Chappelle's humor. He's generally pretty funny. But he didn't start a conversation about shit. His use of "n**ger" in his Sticks and Stones routine is silly and he contradicts himself on it during the routine.

The fact is, "n**ger" means "black". Period. Nothing more. Whatever feelings one has when saying one word is the same when saying the other. It gets better in the later seasons. I think it's 3 where that starts. The Xindi were actually a pretty good overall antagonist.

My big problem with the show is that they went time travel in the very first episode of the whole series. Instead of letting the show just be an early era Star Trek show, they included time travel to make it something else. They hadn't even finished the first episode of the first season before they decided that they couldn't make the concept strong enough on its own.

That's sad. It ends up generically fine, but it could have been really interesting.

76 Even if 9th re-slaps this particular judge, bigger issues remain and nobody's done anything to fix, including "standing" for anyone opposed to a lawful policy, and other things. And more idiocy afoot on expedited removal, from the "court". Even though policy has still not been implemented, for reasons not entirely known but likely identical to other non- or lax enforcement performance.

Heavy-handed, I'd say. The best thing from it was the "self-destruct" sequence, which was used again, almost word for word, in Trek III.

There's a touch about racism/bigotry in the early episode "Balance of Terror," when they see for the first time that Romulans look like Spock, and the navigator Stiles assumes Spock will side with the Romulans and (it's implied) might even be a spy for them.

108 TO me, this is the intersection of the lawfare and SJW.

HR appears to have been trying to cover their ass. Understandable, but this is where that leads. Both the lawfare, and the SJW attacks on our society are a problem, but combined they multiply.

The article linked at CRB over the weekend about brexit brought up how the EU brought courts into the mix in UK as a way to advance leftist goals. This has been going on in US forever, with civil rights act, ADA, etc. but has accelerated under obama, under his guidance, and now under Trump as a way to attack and hobble him.

But in corporate HR it has been a real problem and I think explains a lot of the lefty bias in many companies. You have to abide by the SJW rules, or they will sue your ass.

[I worked at a company in San Jose in the 90s where they were confounded by an engineer who wore homemade mini skirts to work each day with no underwear. It was as sick as it sounds, but the company was terrified of firing him.]

Instead of letting the show just be an early era Star Trek show, they included time travel to make it something else. In the final days of the Romulan War, a crippled captain is given an older ship to reclaim the Federation's original mission of exploration. So, he takes this older ship in a new direction and they explore the cosmos. They don't encounter a single sentient alien life through the entire first season. It's all about survival in an old ship in deep space. Things break. Nerves fray. They get lost. The final episode of the season would be against some sort of cosmically large force that they couldn't actually engage.

151 The argument is "well blacks call each other **** so what's the big deal if I do it". And in a perfect world that would be a valid, logical argument. But in the world we live in, it's just the way it is. And if you really don't get WHY it is the way it is, then there's no point in talking about it.

At another company I got chewed out by the CFO for transporting 1L of ethanol in my car. I was Director of Engineering. Same tech flipped out because I speced Isopropyl in a cleaning process - he claimed it was a carcinogen that would migrate through the gloves and that it was unsafe for contact with skin. Isopropyl,... you know rubbing alcohol. Guy was an idiot but he used his "safety" training and whatever rules or regulations he could imagine to try to control things. ...

175 Moseley relayed the story using the old-timey cop's casually racial language -- which I would insist is a valid choice, because that language is suggestive of a time and place and prevailing attitude that "African-American" would not be.

Condemning people for the usage/ opinions of a past time is reprehensible. Those doing it fail to grasp that whatever they say, think, or do now may well be - make that, is almost certain to be - streng verboten in time.

This is apparent in Conquest's "The Great Terror" which details how people were condemned for views and statements made many years before (e.g., supporting Trotsky) at a time when doing so was perfectly OK.

Ridicule and undermining of "The Cause" is a shoe-fit-well on the Other Foot and it Fits my Ear just fine.

I don't say it, and I don't want to say it. BUT I do feel that if I am banned from saying something, then EVERYONE needs to be banned from saying it, because I don't like race-based laws and rules that only apply to me, and no one else. And so for this reason, I think it is perfectly appropriate for Mosely to be fired and run out of the writers room for talking like this. Same rules for everyone, no two tier systems of privileged people and less privileged people.

And I say, in complete seriousness, that all rap songs that use the n-word should be immediately banned from all airplay, and the performers who use it should be deplatformed. One set of rules.

That's most people's opinion. You have to choose if it applies to everyone or not. I heard a black sports guy going off on MLB for suspending a player for calling a white ump that word. they want to have their military org cake and eat it, non militarily.

My longstanding in-universe explanation is that after the events of ST VI, the Federation population elected a Sanders/Nader ticket that gutted Starfleet and tried to turn it into a purely exploratory group, while letting the Klingons handle the defense of both the Empire and the Federation. This did not work out well, and by TNG we see the results, with the Federation overexpanded and unable to patrol their own territory, a low-level war against the Cardassians which they can't win and can't afford to lose, and a Starfleet that was weakened by decades of political animals and deliberate weakness. It was only after Wolf 359 that the Federation began to correct course.

Well, 2.5 seasons of probably the best show and you're done. There's no turning back from that.

Another thing about Star Trek in general, though, is that it's not really science fiction. It's techno-fantasy.

There's little to no scientific rigor to any "scifi" concept in the show. It's just what the (generally) uneducated writers decided would work.

Hell, I know that when the writers were writing TNG, they would include the word [tech] in places and have a consultant fill the void with technobabble.

People who view the show as science fiction I find funny.

I actually tried hard to get into TNG but couldn't. The only character I identified with was Data because he was as awkward as me. Picard was a beta-male captain, Riker was just too silly at times, only the (nominal) girls were allowed to be "tough", etc.

I liked DS9 for a while but it went about 2-seasons too long. I agree completely that Enterprise got better as the seasons went on - until it didn't. Never watched Voyager - Janeway was just too fvcking annoying. Never watched any of the newer crap because fvck their "kneeling" "protest" in particular.

Not so much.

I do find it curious how poeple can see a thread on a topic that doesn't really engage them and feel the need to tell everyone this.

As opposed to, you know, doing something else.

Anyhow, TOS is fun and campy and has some amusing moments and even deep thoughts.

But Shatner's legendary rant on SNL was spot on: Get a life.

I watched TNG when it came on out of boredom, but it was too stupid and I quit.

Anyway, if writers aren't free to be creative during brainstorming, we really do live in a police state. The solution is to shame and ridicule people who behave that way. Showcase their stupidity and narrow-mindedness and make fun of their prissy Victorian ways.

Mockery is a powerful weapon.

The Left is obviously tyrannical in its ways. But among normal people I tend to view it as a fairly conventional racial slur (so sometimes used affectionately of people who aren't black).

315 Just reading about another one of the clients that former presidential wannabe and CNN's favorite contributor Michael Avenatti ripped off.

Some NBA player's ex-girlfriend hired Avenatti to represent her, and she got a $3 million settlement from the NBA guy (on paper anyway). Avenatti told her it would be paid out in 96 payments over 8 years. In reality, the NBA guy paid $2.75 million in one payment in 2017, and then another $250,000 payment was scheduled for 2020.

Avenatti stole most of the woman's 2017 $2.75 million payment and used it to buy himself a jet. The woman got less than $200,000.

Such a scumbag. CNN must miss him. He was such a perfect fit for that crew of misfits and perverts and crooks.

I view very little of what passes for "science fiction" as science fiction.

There are exceptions within Star Trek, but the transporter? Pure fantasy. Warp speed? Pure fantasy. Hell, in The Cage, they fly halfway across the galaxy in no time.

Sure, there are some ex post facto justifications for this, but they invented the transporter not because it was scientifically plausible. They invented it because they didn't have the money to construct a shuttle and used a cheap optical effect instead.

I'm pretty sure all they learn in school is a set of tropes and that they should aspire to include social justice in their writing.

Also character development is super-important, which is why a TV show about zombies had to spend a season where people talked about their feelings.

Mind you, none of them have read any decent literature or watched classic films, so their idea of "good" is Marvel movies.

It all depends on how picky you are.

If the standard is strict scientific accuracy, you can't have faster than light travel at all, because as far as we know it's not possible to do that.

On the other hand, we now actually have some of the things in the original Star Trek (for example, the communicators).

But yeah, Trek did play pretty fast and loose with the science.

In my experience, hard science fiction is largely unreadable because the people who know the science can't write at all (Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series is unreadable nonsense, but it was pretty scientifically accurate).

The only ones who seems to balance it pretty well were Asimov and Clarke, but they were as much speculative as hard science fiction. At least Clarke would read a scientific paper and then expand on it in fiction.

Not saying any more than other groups, but this is all part of the SJW mentality - the mentality of policing others based on offense or language or opinion.

I think that's the change - most people want to live and let live, and you learn to shrug off the slings and arrows. SJWs want a perfect world and they will rape your family in order to get it.

ROFLMAO! I knew you would try and make some bullshit claim like this. How many white people are "offended" by anyone calling them "crackers" or even the dreaded "cracker ass cracker"? I'd say about ... NONE. No one cares.

You are trying to pretend that whites are so offended by being called "crackers", for some odd reason, when you know it's totally untrue. Because your whole argument falls apart if whites aren't totally offended by some label. But the fact is that people who use the word "cracker" are offended that whites aren't really offended by their use of it (except for you, of course).

Your argument is a sad joke. But you had no option. You are arguing for some asinine rule and then trying to twist everything else to make your pathetic rule seem more reasonable.

I'm done. Don't worry, I'm not commenting any more, here.

But don't make up any more shit about me (as if you think you are reading my mind because you're just that bright ...) and we'll all be satisfied.

I watched when Sarah started to stump for Trump. At one campaign gathering she was screechy and acting very strange at the podium. It was difficult to watch and the reaction from a normally friendly crowd was uncomfortable and people were just looking at each other like WTF? Soon after that she wasn't making any more pubic appearances for Trump IIRC. The attacks on her and her family had to take a big toll along with some of their kids failing off the rails.

428 The problem with a lot of slurs is that they only sting if they have some truth to them.

It isn't the word, or the insult, it is the image of the type of person the insulter is imagining.

Calling me a cracker is kind of meaningless since I have no idea what they mean. That is different with a lot of the words we can't say though. The person who is offended knows *exactly* what is meant, and he is offended because it cuts too close to home.

Now it is 12.4% out of the worker's check, and another 12.4% squeezed from the employer.

I can remember when Democrats believed that it was the duty of America to fight for freedom over tyranny"

489 Watch the video of Ezra Lavant being grilled in deposition about the "tone" of his jokes by a pasty bint from the "Canadian Human Rights Commission" and you can glimpse the horror of a possible future.

490 Moseley's novels aren't my bag of chips - I think "The Devil in a Blue Dress" is one of those rare instances where the movie is better than the book - but nobody, absolutely nobody, should ever receive the Star Chamber treatment for simply relating something that was said to him.

493 Let me get this straight... you can put the word in a script, but you can't say it?

What do you think happens when you write a word into a script? Don't you suppose it might result in someone, you know, saying the word? Because it's his job?

Writing a word into a script ultimately is saying it; you're just using someone else's mouth.

What dummy thought up this rule?

495 Incidentally, I'm of the opinion that everyone should be allowed to use every word.

Now, with the particular word under discussion here, using it in certain ways can constitute "fighting words", and getting a pop in the mush for that is just a risk you take.

I wouldn't recommend calling anyone this word, especially in an angry tone, but I'm okay with writing the word into a story or script as character dialogue, or quoting someone who said it, or saying it while discussing the word itself.

And if you really feel the need to assign privilege points and decide that only certain people are allowed to say it in any context, well, I'm pretty Walter Mosley, of all people, is entitled to use the word however he wants. He grew up not just black, but also of mixed race, in one of the most actually racist metro areas of the country (Los Angeles), in a time when the word "miscegenation" was still in common use.
