Well, here's a longish thread that casts some doubt on how much truth there is behind that. Frankly, what's described here is terrifying, a nation of people who aren't individuals at all, but faceless cogs for the state to manipulate (wait, now I'm starting to see why the left likes Sweden). The thread ends by noting that Swedish is the only language that has a word that means “to cry while masturbating” - Gatrunka.

No Shit, Sherlock The tragic — and overlooked — fallout from the ’60s sexual revolution Look, I'll be the first to admit that my generation (coming of age in the 80s) hit the sweet spot for the sexual revolution – sexually active and free, but we had been raised by an earlier generation that still taught us traditional values. The Reagan Renaissance was reinforcing those values. We all had a lot of sex, but we also respected our partners and most of us still had an eye towards a spouse, a house and 2.4 vine-covered kids in the suburbs (yes, I'm generalizing massively here). Seems that we dropped the ball with our own kids, failing to pass on the traditional values and leaving them with just the “have lots of guilt-free sex” part, and that generation is producing kids that are totally lost, emptied out not just by meaningless sex, but also by a society that not only doesn't foster traditional values, it actively condemns them and pushes the opposite as a good thing. Willowed from the aspiring rapper thread:
The other day I watched a true crime show about some theater arts boy who killed his best friend (female) just to see what it was like. As Leopold and Loeb discovered nearly a century earlier, just because someone is a sociopath, it doesn't follow that one is a criminal genius. At trial, he looked at the victim's friends and family straight in the eye and told them he wasn't the murderer. But on the police video of his first police interrogation, he told the cops his friend was "raped and murdered" before the autopsy was even completed. This was even before all the DNA evidence was found on the ropes and duct tape that he threw out. Posted by: Pete in TX at September 06, 2019 09:54 PM (2RBkF) 11

-------------- FDR had been pushing a more aggressive stance toward the Axis for a while (Lend-Lease wasn't exactly neutral, nor were the Flying Tigers). But the interest just wasn't there at the time in the nation as a whole. There was a lot of wide-spread isolationism, and a view that what happened in Eurasia wouldn't spill over to the Western Hemisphere. Roosevelt apparently didn't like Hitler, and even the Molotov-Ribbontrop Pact didn't change that. Posted by: junior at September 06, 2019 10:06 PM (Fp6vo) 69

Re "reach out"":
As far back as I think 1985, I was in a video production class at Long Beach City College, and another student was producing a program. I don't know what the show was about, but they wanted to use this song that went... Reach out and touch somebody's hand make this world a better place if you can... They must have played that song at least 30 times in just that *one* evening. By the end of that class I never wanted to hear that song again, and still don't. (And BTW, even then, there were some moron-friendlies around. I remember one woman produced a comedy sketch about the vapidness of people giving money to try and end hunger in Ethiopia.) I recently re-watched the first one and liked it even better the second time. It would probably be great with a good sound system, sounded really powerful on my cheapass computer speakers and woofer. I think because I watched it on Amazon they had an ad for the 2nd movie on my prime start page today and that's the only reason I knew about it. I like the atmosphere of the first movie. You're a tiny speck in a bigger world than you imagined and oops, you're about to be squashed. From the sound to the special effects to the eerie music they do a good job of relaying that atmosphere. Oddly, I never came across that word in the nine years I lived there. "Gatrunka" doesn't sound Swedish to me. It's probably borrowed from a foreign language. Although I can believe there's a lot of crying while masturbating nowadays - and not just in Sweden. You can thank #wokefeminism for that, I suppose.

Joe Rogan's podcast is a treasure in the modern world. Joe ain't a super-genius pontificating, but he does have a popular platform (the modern left makes me hate the word "platform") that features conversations with folks you may never hear otherwise. Often you are not hearing conversations with these people for a good reason (it's a waste of everyone's time), other times it's simply because the opinion expressed in not popular. Regardless, in my mostly useless regard, Joe's podcast is a good thing.

The drab sadness of Swedish "style" was frequently mocked by the French. When I was there, everyone was walking around in well-washed cheap-looking clothing, because that's what the average working stiff can afford.
It's difficult to compare one's buying power in Sweden, because some things are very expensive and others are really cheap. We rarely ate in restaurants or even "street kitchens" because it was prohibitively expensive. You simply don't have the disposable income for that. I imagine things are worse now. All of those muzzies cost a lot to support.

Speaking of Sweden, I was flipping through an IKEA catalog the other day and it was all about how to comfortably fit a large number of people into a dinky apartment. One of the "families" it featured had a family of 5 (including a baby - they were white in the catalog but you know that in Sweden only muslim emigrants have 3 kids) living in a one-bedroom flat. Not a prob with IKEA's storage units and handy dividers and sleeper sofas! Another had parents and a 10 year old kid in an efficiency, sleeping in the same room, with a couple of pullout beds.
Apparently cramming families into tiny apartments and thinking that that is nice and cozy and cute because of IKEA's great storage solutions is how the Swedes roll these days, but good luck trying to sell Americans on that. Posted by: Donna&&&&V at September 06, 2019 11:43 PM (d6Ksn) 391

But as all of the seating, sleeping berths, lockers (cabinets & closets, y'all), and shelving...yes, you heard me right, Ace...shelv. ing. were factory designed and installed, I still enjoyed no shortage of storage capacity, seating and sleeping area. Had a fully functioning head (bathroom) with sink & shower, galley (kitchen) with fridge, freeze, two basin sink and two burner range with a chicken-sized oven. It was no problem to store a six week's food supply on board, a half-dozen long arms, a dozen pistols, ammo for all and the cleaning gear, ear muffs, etc that goes with 'em. Rack of nice suits and other respectable wear in the hanging locker (closet), and built in drawers aplenty for undies, tees, socks, belts, etc. Point being? It's not the mere fact of "square footage" that makes a place. It's how that square footage is arranged and equipped that makes *all* the difference. And, I'm very seriously contemplating a return to the water. Something in the fifty foot class, this time. I've about had it with the landlubber life. What is a pole barn?
Posted by: Cosmic Charlie at September 06, 2019 11:57 PM (PUmDY) A building made with "post and purlin" construction, commonly used for barns and equipment sheds. Also know as "post-frame buildings". There is no foundation as such. The classic version: you auger a row of holes into the ground (well a row for each side) and plant telephone poles, tamp them into place, and link the poles together with horizontal 2X6's, and place roof trusses on top. Clad the whole thing with metal siding and roofing. The more deluxe version? Auger your holes, place Sonotube concrete forms, pour reinforced concrete piers, with steel flanges to bolt your pillars to. The pillars are bundles of 2X6, usually. That's how my 32X60 big shop is built. And it has a 6" poured concrete floor with radiant heat pipes built into it. Posted by: Lurking Lurker - Not In My Purview at September 07, 2019 12:01 AM (FiUMj) Good point. I hadn't considered that before. If you're only having 1 or maybe 2 kids (or none), you just don't need that space. I've been looking at house plans, and plenty of 1600-1800 seem roomy and adequate. It's all about how the space is divided up. I need a walkin pantry and storage space.

You're right, Jim; the 720 square foot condo I now own feels bigger than the 775 square foot condo I used to rent, because that old place had a lot of 45-degree angles in weird places, resulting in extra space that couldn't be used very efficiently.

Re: School supplies scam
Here's something I've noticed, though I will preface it by noting Little Clingette is in private school, not public. If you just go down to the school and say "No, we aren't going to do that", the school tends to leave you alone on issues like that. One year, I had the school asking me to bring in a 12 pack of Kleenex boxes, 4 containers of hand sanitizer, 2 boxes of markers, 2 boxes of colored pencils, 24 black ink pens, 24 blue ink pens, and 4 500 page packs of loose leaf notebook paper in addition to binders and other things that seemed reasonable. So I went to the teacher and said "That seems like too much stuff, I'm not going to buy all of that". The teacher said that they stored it up so students didn't run out. I told her Clingette would keep all of those things in her backpack and as she ran out, I'd buy her more. The teacher said that's not how it worked. I told her that she didn't understand, I was telling her how we were going to do it, not offering an alternative plan. She seemed perplexed. But then she said, "okay, that's fine". Nobody ever takes the time to just say "Nope, not going to do it." That's why they just keep running their schemes and scams. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at September 07, 2019 12:11 AM (dUEni) 472

There is the ol' "Pole in the barn" "paradox" exercise in Special Relativity. You have a long pole and a barn of the same length as the pole from front door to back. The pole is moving at some speed, an appreciable fraction of c, where the pole is now 1/2 of its original length from the frame of the barn. You let the pole enter the barn, and can close both doors with the pole inside. You then open the back door quickly and the let the pole through. However, from the frame of the pole, the barn is moving at high speed and the length between doors is 1/2. From the frame of the pole, the pole won't fit inside the barn. The exercise is resolving the apparent paradox. Something similar happened in Cherry Creek, one of the wealthier areas of Denver. They tore down a lot of businesses and put up huge complexes of micro-units, and didn't bother to provide parking for them. So, all the residents parked their cars at nearby Cherry Creek Mall. The mall no longer had enough parking for its customers, so they actually had to start charging for parking. At a mall! Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at September 07, 2019 12:28 AM (H3MF8) 501

"Little Boxes" is a song written and composed by Malvina Reynolds in 1962, which became a hit for her friend Pete Seeger in 1963, when he released his cover version. The song is a political satire about the development of suburbia, and associated conformist middle-class attitudes. It mocks suburban tract housing as "little boxes" of different colors "all made out of ticky-tacky", and which "all look just the same." "Ticky-tacky" is a reference to the shoddy material supposedly used in the construction of the houses. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 07, 2019 12:43 AM (aKsyK) 534

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 07, 2019 12:43 AM (aKsyK) And the funny thing is, those 1960's suburban tract homes were mostly well-built, and were on pretty large lots, and those neighborhoods now are mighty desirable places to live. And the homes were not all alike; there were a number of standard plans, and they tried to mix them up a bit. It's the modern-day subdivisions that have row upon row of identical houses on postage-stamp lots, all with the same color paint, or siding, or roof shingles. Malvina Reynolds song is a lot more apropos today than it was in 1960. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 07, 2019 12:51 AM (a72/q) 549

In celebration of gender-fluid fashion and inclusion of all kinds, the queer-style digital magazine dapperQ threw a runway party at the start of New York Fashion Week, filling the Beaux-Arts Court of the Brooklyn Museum with invited guests and nearly 2,000 members of the public. It was the sixth annual Queer Runway Show at the museum for dapperQ, which uses the rallying cry of "ungendering fashion." Marking its 10th year in business, the site enlisted 10 brands Thursday night to dress an array of models of all colors, ages and sizes, large and small, on the gender binary and off. One model used a wheelchair and another a single crutch. Professional trans models strutted and camped alongside YouTube and Instagram influencers. Zach Barack, the openly trans actor who appeared in the recent blockbuster "Spider-Man: Far from Home," was among the walkers. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 07, 2019 01:13 AM (aKsyK) 591

I enjoyed that show. It's funny! And Mary Louise Parker is gorgeous, and spends a fair bit of time naked. It just... sort of stretched credulity at times. Pastel was a dirty word there, I think. Sadly, I think it has been modernized out of existence. I didn't take notes, but Wiki gives the charts info for all 15 of their albums. All of them made the top 50 in the Billboard Top 200, and the last 10 in a row made the top 10, several at #1. If a normal could prove that global warming is man made and it is causing these natural disasters, I would be willing to listen to them. If a normal could prove it sans politics, we would be all in on at least the idea of making things better. But the left wants us to believe that capitalism causes weather events. They want us to dump our way of life based on Algore. I want some normals to show it to me, to make it clear to everyone. If they can't do this, then why not? The problem with the Bahamas is that it's a low lying archipelago in the Southern edge of the Northern hemisphere, in the Atlantic Ocean.
That means it's right on the path the Southern hemisphere uses to blow off its heat. It's basically sitting in the world's chimney. If it stops hurricaning there, it means all of us in the North are freezing to death in an ice age. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 07, 2019 02:48 AM (5aX2M) 682

The left calls this an accomplishment. Now you have to be 21 to even buy nicotine replacement therapies to get off cigs. To me this shows we are a society of perpetual adolescents. You can join the Army at 17 but have to wait 4 years for a beer or a smoke? Yes smoking is bad for you. But the real issue is this nation is going backwards. Childhood is gaining ground. I would not be surprised if they make the age to buy tobacco and booze 30 in a few years. Too bad the people who are supposed to teach these kids have no shame at all. the funny thing about brown liquor is that it is any booze aged in wood.
You could put vodka or gin in wood and it would be brown Some say they can only handle white spirits and the brown stuff is too heavy or makes them sick. it could be the wood but my guess is it is psychological. The exemption is fake brown liquor that has had coloring added. To each his own, I don't care if you like white spirits or brown. But that this county is giving up beer and replacing it with low alcohol seltzer water can't be a good sign. People will get into the most absurd things if they think it is now cool Again, entrepreneurs should take not. Tell them seltzer is causing global warming and just sell them cans of tap water with a bit of booze. Posted by: Quint at September 07, 2019 03:39 AM (n13/j) 710
I don't care for beer, but I don't mind the low-alcohol flavored seltzers. Mostly I do the cherry rum and coke.

Quint dropping some booze knowledge:
1) the beer on whiskey mighty risky and whiskey on beer never fear is a load. It is a psych out. The only way this makes sense if you are guzzling beer and start guzzling whiskey. I get people have issues with certain drinks, mostly from past experiences, but it is all booze, the alcohol is the same. 2) the people who say tequila will F you up worse than other alcoholic drinks have no clue. Maybe you drank too much tequila but there is nothing special about it, unless you drank rot gut. 3) A lot of people say they can't drink red wine because of the sulfites. It turns out that white wine has more sulfites than red wine. And the FDA estimates that fewer than 1 percent of Americans are actually sulfite sensitive. In fact, many who say they are sulfite sensitive say the wine they had traveling in Europe caused them no issues because it had no sulfites. It is true that your euro bottle does not say "contains sulfites" but it does. Only in America is it required to put on the bottle "contains sulfites" 99 percent of wine contains sulfites, it is a natural part of the wine making process. 4) Beer is not skunked because it was left out then refrigerated. Beer is only skunked when the hops react to solar rays. This is why beer in clear bottles and green bottles is often skunked. Those bottles can not block the solar rays that skunk beer. In fact, Miller high life for one is a beer in clear bottles that will never skunk because they use a hop extract that does not react to solar rays. As for Corona in clear bottles, and Heineken in green bottles, you are on your own. Posted by: Quint at September 07, 2019 04:00 AM (n13/j) 712

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at September 07, 2019 03:55 AM (NMAzL) i still like rum and cokes and don't care what so called aficionados think. in fact, I have been trending to old school America lagers and away from fru fru ipas and goses. Anyone who bad mouth's someone for what they drink is a wannabe and newbie. I have nothing against them, it is a learning experience. Most of the best of us drank American style pale lagers. And those that get into beer or wine inevitably change their tastes and go for things they used to think they never would. Posted by: Quint at September 07, 2019 04:06 AM (n13/j) 713

well since this thread is as dead as a door nail. I might as well follow through with my point for posterity.
If you really want to learn about skunked beer try this. Take a clear bottled corona and put it in the sun for ten minutes. Then compare it to a corona in a can. Make sure you smell them as the skunking is really about smell. i don't want to call out too many companies here but you know the ones in clear bottles and even more so in green bottles. The Canadian beers and many from Germany go with green bottles. At one point people asked why these companies went with clear and green bottles if it messed up their beer. Well, we all see that Corona is not in cans and also in brown bottles called Corona Familiar. Some have told me this is a different beer but I am not buying it. There is no proof of that at all. Historically, imported Euro beer came in green bottles. Not just Euro, you had Canadian stuff like Moose Head. But you have so many from Europe like St. Paulie Girl, Becks, Heineken and others. It got to the point where green meant imported and sophisticated. That so many of them were skunked was a afterthought. Now you have one of the most famous Euro lagers changing from green bottles to brown. That beer is Pilsnser Urquell. They listened and changed things up. One might wonder why I propose Corona for a skunk test. They bash Corona and say is it has not flavor blah blah. That is my point, Corona is the best beer to do a skunk test on. There is nothing to hide with this beer. Compare a clear bottle left in the sun for ten minutes with a canned version. You won't forget the difference and will always understand what causes skunking from that day forward. Some say they like the skunked tastes of Corona in clear bottles. That is fine, if you like it, you like it. There are also rumors that they do it on purpose. I promise you, they do not. The clear bottles are a marketing thing. And the green ones are really no better. The brown bottles do a better job but there is a reason more and more craft brewers are using cans.
