What happened in the '70s? [KT]

A Formerly Hallowed University

What happened to universities in the '70s?

Victor Davis Hanson's masterfully written piece on the degradation of universities (with rare exceptions and bright spots) from icons to just cons comes to us via J.J. Sefton's Labor Day Morning Report. You should probably read the whole thing. Maybe share it. A few highlights:

The stage is set for degradation:

Most of us who came of age in the 1970s revered the university--even as it was still reeling from 1960s protests and beginning a process that resulted in its present chaos and disrepute.

Americans of the G.I. Bill-era first enshrined the idea of upward mobility through the bachelor's degree--the assumed gateway to career security--and the positive role of expanding colleges to grow the new suburban middle classes.

As an undergraduate and graduate student at hotbeds of prior 1960s protests at UC Santa Cruz and Stanford, I don't think I had a single conservative professor. Yet there were few faculty members, in Western Civilization, history, classics, or mandatory general education science and math classes, who either sought to indoctrinate us with their liberal world view or punished us for remaining conservative.

It was jarring to see old-fashioned demands for Ciceronian style in Latin prose composition classes occasionally coming from professors with jeans, long hair, and scandals, or to be introduced to artificially informal profs ("Oh, just call me Bob--no need for 'Doctor' or 'Professor'"), who nonetheless insisted on grounding ancient historical arguments with precise references to Greek quotations in classical authors.

VDH taught his own students, many from rural and minority backgrounds, from the classics. But this kind of teaching was becoming rare even before he retired.

He describes the transformation of administration from a part-time faculty duty to an expensive full time professional caste, and the exploding costs of college. Spartan elements of the college experience are just about gone.

The fall

What went wrong? The former students of the 1970s came into power and gradually began to reject the very code of conduct and training of those who taught them. And in turn they taught a new generation who for the first time had little first-hand knowledge of the great campus scholars and icons of the past.

Politics increasingly infected courses as competence eroded--logical for faculty and students since the former required far less of the latter. Across the curriculum, race, class, and gender studies found their way into art, music, literature, philosophy and history classes. Deduction now replaced the old empiricism. Grades inflated; the therapeutic triumphed over the tragic as how students felt was almost as important as what they learned and knew.

And that's not all that went wrong . . .

Other subheadings include:

The Woke Industry

Truth in Lending?

The Costs

and my favorite,

The Prescription

A few of his excellent ideas:

Mandatory exit standardized tests could calibrate whether students learned anything after spending or borrowing $250,000 for a degree. If a certain minimum SAT or ACT score is considered necessary for admittance (to calibrate the relative merit of various high school grade point averages), why would not such a similar exit exam be necessary for a bachelor's degree? The university double-checks the competency of high-school degrees, but not its own?

Universities should be held responsible for repaying a large percentage of the loans they issued and yet in advance knew well could not and would not be repaid. The government should get out of the campus loan insurance business.

Administrative service should become finite and thus recalibrated as a temporary release from teaching rather than as a full-time career--and paid on the same scale as faculty instruction. Most importantly, society at large needs to accept that the undergraduate population needs to be reduced by half and redirected to apprenticeships and vocational training.

And the final irony:

The chance of reform? Zero.

Indebted students, many with largely worthless degrees, and few employment opportunities sufficient to repay their loans, have become a loyal progressive constituency. How odd that an entire generation, in psychologically and financially suspended animation, is seen as useful by the very politicos who created this labyrinth of exploitation in the first place.

I think he has the big picture here.

What happened to rock music in the '70s?

This weekend, CBD posted a piece on rock legends dying off. Meanwhile, Rolling Stone, the magazine, is also sort of dying off. But yesterday I ran across one of their pieces which noted that vinyl is poised to out-sell CDs soon.

Huh.

Thoughts?

Anyway, I mostly missed out on the harder side of rock back in the day, and I was not real up to speed on some of the rest of rock. So I was totally flummoxed by Rolling Stone's commentary on their favorite forgotten rock music of the 1970s.

TWIGGY?

I think she sounds better later, here.

Surprise!

Paul McCartney's brother?

What happened to blues in the '70s?

Rolling Stone also did a piece on their favorite forgotten blues music of the 1970s. Probably safe to listen to this one. Might not be safe to sing along these days. Stay in your own lane.

Hope that your weekend turns out well. Got anything planned?

We have a car we are planning to sell. We let it sit for a couple of months, and now it won't start without being jumped. It required jumping every time we want to start it.

-

It will sell a lot easier with the new battery. If I were buying it would make me wonder if the alternator needed replacing, for one. That expense will help sell the car and can be accounted for in the price.

You might find a used battery on Craigslist, too.

obama and the democrats intentionally took over the student loan business from private lenders. They saw all of that money being made by the private sector and wanted it for themselves.

There was no "student loan crisis" until the Federal government took over 99.99% of student loans in 2010 and the Fed started handing out $$$ like candy to anyone with a pulse no matter if they could ever repay the loan.

Plus they made student loans bullet proof by being non dis chargeable in bankruptcy.

This "crisis" is 100% the responsibility of the democrats.

I still buy CDs when I can, because I want to maintain control over my digital "content." If I only do digital downloads, which is sometimes the only option, I burn those onto CDs.

Records? Well, I have a record player, but I can't put it in my car, which is where a large portion of my music listening to occurs. I don't give a damn about supposed "fidelity" and all that crackling nonsense the record people try to say.

18 Well, since this is serving our mid-day open thread needs .... I hope you will pardon me if I re-post my willowed request for knowledge.

I have a practical life-skills question to ask the Horde:

We have a car we are planning to sell. We let it sit for a couple of months, and now it won't start without being jumped. It required jumping every time we want to start it.

Is it worthwhile to try to add water to the battery? The procedure sounds a little hazardous. Our other thought was to put the oldest battery from one of our other cars into the car for sale and buy a new battery for the car we will keep.

The car for sale is a '98 Sable, so we are not expecting much for it -- $500-800 maybe.

22 I was one of the students in the 1970s, and I thought of myself as liberal, but I didn't get incensed about it. I was much more concerned with having dates, drinking, and surviving classes.

Didn't finish then, as I realized even at that point that it was not teaching me much. After about 13 years, thanks to being hired by a local private university, I was able to go back to school and get my degree. That led to a succession of good IT jobs. But I got caught in the H1-B draft. I wound up going back to the same university as a staffer, using my IT and organizational skills in ways my predecessor hadn't.

Now I work in an allied department in the same building, for more money (though not as much as if I had continued in IT!), and hope to retire soon and flee this pesthole for a better climate.

Somewhere about 2005, as I saw how feminists acted toward men and how the rabble reacted to Katrina, I woke up to being a conservative. In some ways I'd always been one, but didn't realize it.

Swap the batteries. Drive to Autozona and have them test the battery and alternator.

If the alternator is good and the battery is dead, seek to replace it (New or Used).

If the alternator is the problem, repair / replace / donate the car. Depending on the cost numbers involved.

Whether intentional or not, it was nice to see someone note the Ponzi scheme that resulted from those GI bills types who, to this day, think so very much of themselves, as they greedily go about sucking the leif out of the rest of the Country. But hey, they deserve it!

The only good thing that will come out of that generation is the almost certainty Medicare will never be for all, not as long as they are alive, voting, and protecting their perks, something they excel at.

33 There was a blues revival in the 80s that included some real amazing talent but that faded.

Consider this though: the 60s rock and roll surge was mostly driven by blues revival from songs that came from earlier in that century.

But its been 50 years since the British Invasion that was so driven by blues, and the blues those people were excited by and inspired by came from less than 50 years earlier.

50 years before the 1960s was the 1910s which was before most of the blues were recorded or the biggest names were even active. Robert Johnson was born in 1911. Acts like Muddy Waters, BB King, Howlin Wolf etc were all 30s to 50s acts.

If we're going to have a rock and roll revival (doubtful, since rock has to be rebellious and cutting edge to be effective), that window passed.

Posted by: garrett at September 07, 2019 11:39 AM (J8GSw)

56 What's interesting to me is that the music people enjoy and listen to is so often driven by the sounds in their life and the machines they listen to it on.

Back in the old victrola days, the fidelity was terrible and leaned heavily on high sounds (not much bass) and the recordings were mostly high sounding singers and tinny music, not the full orchestral range.

when people started carrying around radios, the sound changed to one that carried better over transistor radios. When people got High-Fidelity component stereos to listen to music, you got super high end recording processes with stuff like Dark Side of the Moon, filled with nuances and subtle tones, little bits mixed in with incredible complexity.

Now that people are running around with crappy earbuds on digital devices, the music is 70% bass thuds and repeated mindless lyrics because its about the beat and really nothing else.

White male, 57-63.

I wasn't shocked that he was that emboldened, I was shocked by the utter casualness with which he said it. There was no anger, no vehemence... He may as well have been telling me that gravity exists. It was just a statement of fact for him.

Per the left: People who refuse to be ruled are exactly what's wrong with this country.

Do any of you know a set of circumstances under which that statement does not apply? I don't. It always comes back to that. "People might make the WRONG choices with freedom, so we should centralize the choice-making process and enforce it universally."

Chances are good you have some hefty deficits, some hearing loss. Could be anything, maybe a construction job you had, maybe you are a combat vet, maybe you spent a career commuting on a noisy train.
Then buy hearing aids. The new technology is very good.
You will be amazed at the difference.

But this:

Encode a song with some crisp sounds (like cymbals) to a low bitrate, 128k or 96kbps. Focus on those sounds as you switch from the cramped encoding to the higher bitrate one. Or don't, if you don't want to hear it. You might not be able to un-hear it.

107 On vinyl vs CDs, early CDs were poorly mastered and a lot of those stereotypes were true. They sounded tinny, etc.

Vinyl records got a bad wrap because on analog equipment like that, quality really matters. A cheap CD player sounds great, a cheap record player doesn't. If the needle/cartridge isn't up to spec, Also, people rarely cleaned vinyl.

On a high end set up, vinyl does sound more natural, like the music is being performed in front of you. But its not really worth all of that.

I can definitely tell compression on many Mp3 recordings. There's online tests you can do and see for yourself, I just remember my pirated music from that era sounds like garbage.

118 VDH's article is excellent; I do believe he has overlooked one factor which had a huge effect on the jobs situation, and which gave everyone a strong financial incentive to pursue the course taken.

Griggs vs Duke Power Co., Supreme Court, 1973

In that ruling, the Supreme Court threw out almost all methods that corporations could use to qualify workers for hiring - except for educational level. So, after 1973, the *only* way a corporation could guarantee that they were getting someone who could read and write coherently (well back then, at least) and who had the background and dedication to stick to something for 4 years was to insist on only hiring College Graduates.

This is the important part - as soon as that shift happend, then out in the marketplace, out in the Real World, that is ALL that a College Degree was worth anymore. It became a pedigree, a certificate allowing you to be employed at a responsible level. And once the market decided that was all that counted, of course the entire system was going to be geared towards passing out certificates and pedigrees with as little trouble as possible. And *everyone* is going to be agitating for them to be passed out as easily as possible, because now our government has demanded that you have that certificate if you want a chance at living anything close to a middle class lifestyle.

Vinyl is just another status indicator.

Fine if you want to spend the money, bu-u-u-u-ut,

somewhere between the ages of 40-50 you lost the ability to tell the difference cuz you lose the high highs and low lows.

The science is settled.

If you've trained yourself to hear differences on familiar recordings you own, eh fine.

But, if you suddenly were challenged with say twenty 20 second clips from the middle of various random musical pieces,

you're highly unlikely to do any better than flipping a coin.

130 Per BLS

Median weekly income for those with a bachelors: $1173

It's like when people tell me how a particular wine has all these "notes" they can taste. They'll throw all sorts of words out there that don't equate to my experience at all.

And in the end, if I'm thirsty, I'll drink water. If I want to get drunk, I'll drink some rotgut with a high alcohol content.

Yes, I'm a philistine. And don't really care.

I went to the equivalent of a community college to get my shitty little EET degree. Yet I can't tell you how many grads from Penn State, Purdue, Georgia Tech - shit, name the school - I've worked with that are just shockingly mind-numbingly stupid. They can't do a fucking thing - except point to their degree.

135 Today, movies with dialogue, have so much deep background undertones and clutter it is difficult to understand the words.

This is such an annoyance. Set design, costuming, digital effects etc have all gotten so good but the sound mixing is atrocious, just horrible. They're so fixated on the sound effects and music being blended in for emotional impact that you can't really hear the dialog half the time.

Oh, and VHS is not great for video but its fantastic for audio. And you can record very, very long mixes on a VHS long play tape. Its reel-to-reel quality audio.

150 Fidelity can only be found in your source. No matter the equipment used. If your source is bad, your sound is bad.

People choose formats based on the quality of available source for their chosen genre(s).

IF you could take a modern recording and simultaneously master for each individual format and record...THEN and ONLY THEN could you make a comparison.

This is almost NEVER done. And if it is done, you are gonna pay a premium for the bastard format as the production of it costs a lot more money than just using a common source for ALL formats.

From the mouths of the car companies themselves - all of the Great Designers (Like Harley Earl) and the true Car people left the industry as it finally matured, and the Accountants took over. And they couldn't care less what they made as long as it showed a short term profit; and then Government got involved too, and so you had cars that no longer were created by men who loved automobiles and design, but instead were created by a commission answerable only to the bureacracy and the accountants.

It's really never gotten better since then, which is why the old cars are still the most beautiful of all time.

depends on your plans. The key is having a spefic career in mind. But also, some degrees and schools are simply better than others. There is nothing wrong with liberal arts if you have plan and are and achiever. Do you realize how many CEOs have history degrees? Most don't have CEO degrees.

I have no issue with college though from media, it seems like a different plaee than what I encountered. It might be the kids themselves as I went head to head with more than a few liberal profs and turned out alright.

In this specific day and age. I would let a kid think long and hard about choosing a rando college vs learning a skill we know will pay off. one can learn a skill like high end auto mechanics and then add a university degree. Guitarist Justin Hayward recently said how disgusted he was with the studio heads' CD omission practice that he is currently working in a sound studio in Italy to correct that for all newly released MB CDs. Money maker maybe, but kinda doubtful that the cost will be recovered in new sales, but why Italy? Dunno, but the Lake Cuomo area is after all, a very beautiful area to work.

Depends how you define "use". I assume you mean a degree in history is "useless" if you don't become a historian, or something along those lines. But that history degree gets you an entry level marketing job.

My degree has zero to do with how I make my living. My sister has a degree in physiology, but works in investment banking. Most of my friends are in a similar poisution, they got a "useless" degree but used that degree as a stepping stone to a great career.

When I was recruited out of college, the degree didn't matter. What mattered was grades and experience, either from internships or summer jobs. But 100% of the recruiters I spoke to would never have given me the time of day had I not been in college.

190 From the last thread:

The New Orleans Saints were a child of political corruption.

New Orleans had wanted a team for a long time, and Pete Rozelle was adamant it would never happen. Ever.

When the NFL/AFL merger happened, it required a Congressional thumbs-up for the new league to retain its tax-exempt status (this is where we got 501(c)6).

The chair of the Senate Finance Committee was Russell Long (D-LA), and he refused to play ball, unless New Orleans could play ball.

And so it happened.

191 The question keeps floating out there, "what will people do when so many jobs are lost to automation?"

imo, we need to get people out of the big cities, where they are boxed and controlled and warehoused ... reinvigorate the small estate, small homestead. Kids now leave the rural areas because there is "so much to do" in the big city. While that can be true, much of that culture is a fake leftist wasteland, full of noise and pollution ... and RATS. (not to mention illegals and poop)

With digital reaching rural areas at high speed (I have 1000 bps for $90/mo) ... there is nearly unlimited culture and learning available, and isolation is not such a big deal. Larger live social events are still only 20 minutes from me, but when I lived right in New Orleans, downtown took that in slow times, triple it for rush hour. Then there was the concern of theft, crime, parking -- and everything cost more.

But back to the "what will people do?" ... if more people had a grand property, there would be more labor to be hired for various services, and all those people could have a better life than being in a $300k house on a 1/8th acre lot, with high taxes in a cookie cutter suburb, near a leftist run, failing BigCity. Rural economies would come to life, other production could return from China, MAGA.

Or at least that might be a better way to build out a self reliant America -- better than having MegaCorps and oligarchs start buying up the countryside, and bringing in Mexican labor as serfs. (see California). A couple that come here to hunt from Houma, LA are leaving that area ... big crime has moved in, after Katrina.

195 There are a lot of very, very functional university systems to poach ideas from overseas.

But the left doesn't want functional university systems, they want breeding grounds to incubate waves of red guards, and Ivy League credential factories for the chosen ones.

Much more destructive than the simple moonbattery that came out of the late 60's and early 70's - whose knock-on effects we're still dealing with in the form of tenured faculty from that generation - was the massive lowering of standards so "everyone could go to college".

Bullshit. Most people have no business going to college. But our nation has almost no functional pipeline for vocational and trades training, and desperately needs one.

I'm a professional; I have an advanced degree and work in an office full of various specializations, many of which you might count 300-400 or so practitioners in the entire world. I have relatives that work in .gov aerospace that have spit out their drinks when I told them our budget numbers. And yet, virtually every up and coming member of the office falls under one description:

- Under 30- No degree- Just bought their first home and new car

Their same-age peers with degrees are doing temporary grunt work as contractors, stuffed in a back room, for a fraction of the pay and are basically fucked.

Degrees are increasingly worthless for most fields because the colleges are worthless. 4, 5, 6+ years wasted not doing anything productive, not learning anything other than how to be insufferable and entitled, getting a late start on saving money and building a mountain of debt. They come out of school competing with people that self-taught while working crap jobs and then talked their way into real work by pointing to real results.

We need to stop dumbing down higher ed to please well meaning dolts that want "everyone to go to college". We also need to stop dumbing it down in order to dish out vanity degrees to privileged little shits.

Comparing salaries of kollej grads vs. high school grads is particularly silly, roughly on part with the argument about the so-called wage gap for the gals.

There's a sampling error with these comparisons. Apples v. oranges, so to speak.

If however, you could take the average kollej grad and compare him/her/it to someone of comparable intelligence, who goes into a trade instead of college, I think you'd find the benefits of not going to college greatly outpaces wasting four years paying for a useless, yes useless, degree.

204 I have a bunch of advanced degree family members. Almost to a person they believe that at least a third, or maybe more, of all colleges existing today won't be around in 10 years.

A lot of them were built on the lie that "everyone should go to college". A lot of students were then pushed into the pipeline who either were not really college material or had no desire to do it, other than parents who bought into the lie.

Combine that with the huge amount of debts some students were saddled with and you have a growing number of people who don't buy the college value proposition.

There are a lot of jobs in the trade around here that went unfilled because they created this allusion that college was the way to go. Meanwhile those trade jobs paid better and had better benefits than the jobs most kids had coming out of college. Combine that with a growing number of tech jobs that only require some technical training and I see the college educated population dropping.

There will always be a place for college education. Only not with about 70% of today's curriculum and liberal brainwashing.

Sorry, don't buy it. I'm 62, and the difference between the 2 mediums can be astounding at times. Certainly, my 24 bit SACD's can sound absolutely amazing. Often, they trash the original vinyl (not always just due to wear). But so many of the older "remastered" albums have been brickwalled to stupid levels. There's simply no transients left.

There's a relaxation to the presentation of good vinyl - and granted - you've got to be listening on an expensive rig, comparing 2 good front ends. But I also guarantee I could put on some comparisons A/B and you'd spot the difference immediately (you don't always hear pops and clicks). And sometimes, it's a draw.

Perhaps though, even more important is the ritual of LP's. I used to measure the evenings in 20 minute increments. Time slows. There's just something therapeutic about pulling an album out of the sleeve, setting on the turntable, giving it a quick brush, and dropping the stylus on that groove. Hearing that first little pop as it makes its way towards the music. And then, at the end, having to get up and raise the tonearm - deciding if it gets a flip or you're going to move on.

I'm so glad I never sold off my vinyl back in the 80's (well over 1k albums). Cumbersome, big, space consuming, but each one is a hidden art piece. I can see why kids are doing it. You own it. It's not going to have Apple or Amazon decide that these lyrics are bad (about to happen) and they kill your library. Plus, I can sit and spin the wheel on Led Zeppelin III as much as I like. Go vinyl!

There could be new trades to serve more people with larger property ownership (wealthier and bigger middle class). Lately the rich have gotten richer, largely via a manipulated stock market. Rates have lowered since 1980, debt has soared, production outsourced to commie slaves, now rates are near zero. MAGA means rebuilding a strong middle class, via more free and productive American people, not by infinitely inflating currency/markets, and "globalizing".

I can relate. I was one of the military brats at Punahou when as the Vietnam War hotted up, they transferred a number of senior officers to Hawaii to help run that war (roughly halfway between Vietnam and DC).

Kids drove to Punahou in their late model sports cars. We arrived on a bus from Pearl Harbor. Punahou wasn't too sure we were really "Punahou people," and so bruited the idea of not giving us diplomas from Punahou, but merely "certificates of completion" for our last year of high school there.

Then the National Merit results were announced, and the 50 of us who'd transferred in had doubled the number of National Merit Finalists had had in any of the previous years.

At which point Punahou decided we WERE Punahou people after all, and not unter Menschen. But we were clearly outcasts in every respect.

Well it does. And that's where most of the good teachers I had were doing business.

But it's a vanity, because government controls economy.

You realize very quickly that economies are natural systems, that much can be done to mitigate or prevent disasters, as with forests and fires.

You also realize that, though they also know this, politicians and the biggest businesses won't do any of it, because they prefer power to wealth.

That's why it's the "dismal science."

Nobody asked to hear my life story, so I'll only say this: I'm moving out of a large city, to a much smaller city, and recently drove from here to there. I love driving, and forget how much I do, because DRIVING in a large city takes all the fun out of it.

So the whole trip, the ONLY time my blood pressure went up, was the two large cities we passed through on our way from here to there... and then the last several miles once we got back here. By that point, as I am fond of saying, it's a good thing for you people on the road with me that I don't have a .50 cal mounted on my hood.

348 There are 4 cars in my garage. My wife's car is a CPO German luxury car. Bought it used, 2 years old with 20K miles. Still a brand new car, with a 7 year warranty that is transferable (better than buying new). That was 2 years ago, and we're looking to sell it soon and get the next 2 year old version. The depreciation between years 2 and 4 on those cars is very small. It's the sweet spot of car ownership, little depreciation, driving a nearly new car still under warranty which is a big selling point when it comes time to sell.

The other 3 are a beater truck I use to get shit from Home Depot and drive the dogs to the vet. My daily driver which is a 10 year old Japanese sedan. And then my 40 year old German sports car that they will bury me in, and hence I care not about what it's worth

The country is going down the drain for lack of historical knowledge. The last thing we need is less history. And if one studies history at the collegiate level, they will see it is nothing like what you got in high school or in some survey course for Freshmen. History is has been one of the planks of Western Studies since the beginning and for good reason.

The problem is not liberal arts degrees. The problem is "studies" degrees and the shite college's people send their kids to these days. Ask anyone with a history degree from Harvard how difficult it was to find a job. Hell, this isnt' even the issue. The problem is universities have turned into lefty hell holes.

If I were advising a young kid today. I would tell them to listen to Mike Rowe as much as possible.

Agreed. It is about finding out what matters to you in your time of life. I am not going to crap on city life as I have spent my share of time in them. I could knock off most of the well known cities in Western Civ really. Each man has to find his own place that fits him at a specific time. I was only telling where I am now. The entire industry is based on lending.

I once went to a boat dealer just to see what was there. No intention of buying, but I wanted to see what the new stuff had vs the older stuff. And the salesman said if you want to take a boat out for a test drive (or sea trial since everything on a boat is a different word than for a car even though it means the same thing) you need to get financing lined up first and we need to see proof, kind of like getting pre-approved for a mortgage before some real estate agents will work with you. I said, well what if I pay with cash. And the guy said, oh, I'm not sure. Let me ask my manager, I've never worked with a cash buyer before.

I bought mine from a local used dealer that I went to HS with. I had sold a car dad had and got a better price than a trusted friend said I should take. They took an old vehicle I hated as a trade in, at a fair price so I didn't have to deal with it.

Overall I'm happy. Even tho it's 5 years old, seems new to me and not a beater.

There is more to the study of history at the collegiate level than just reading books. But I sense this is going nowhere. If you think history is no more than a hobby that is fine. I am not in charge of history major recruitment and really have no desire to spell it out.

There are more marketable degrees in this day and age no doubt. I think it is pretty clear most Americans have little interest in learning more history. But if you think a history degree is simply about reading or learning dates, you would be mistaken.

Learning dates is a trivial understanding of history. Reading the various sources, synthesizing the various perspectives, and drawing your own conclusions would be my understanding of history.

Logical reasoning and the ability to write clearly and cogently are a given that should be expected of anyone who graduates from college.

411 A good example for where a historically-inclined brain helps is in dealing with the duuuude atlaaaantis crowd.

Say, you got a book discussing a peek at the Timaeus and other literature; then a brief look at mid Atlantic geology, then a few Flood myths and a look at the post-Ice-Age sea level rise. Finally, sifting the data for the nearest likely mass destructive events that a Greek like Plato would be likely to have heard about.

Usually that trail ends up in Thera; although Peter James floated western Anatolia, and others have mused about the Black Sea in 6000 BC or so.

It doesn't really matter which one is right, or (my theory) they all contributed, across 5000 years of muddled storytelling.

Either way, you've learnt something about where catastrophic floods can happen, and can turn down the urge to buy waterfront property in Portland. It also might help you keep your kids away from manipulative creeps like Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Why? Because the two interact quite profoundly with each other, and, moreover, were coincident in time. Stalin's extension of the Great Terror to the Spanish Civil War caused him to exterminate inter alia the members of POUM, and played no small part in the Republicans' loss.

The parallels between leftists' behavior then and now are disturbing, shall we say.

443 Just sent an email to my Lt Governor Dan Patrick letting him know that I appreciate his willingness to suffer the consequences of his positions but I wouldn't continue to support him ( he's going to push background checks on private sales) .

These politicians just don't understand the incremental strategy the Left and anti gun people have. I pointed him to gay marriage as an example.

454 I'm reading about the severely inbred Hapsburgs and one of their strangest loinfruit was Ferdinand I: "One of his favorite pastimes was to wedge his bottom in a wastebasket and roll around the floor on it. Despite that, he reigned as emperor for 18 years."

463 They led with Charles II but I think Ferdi is a strong contender. Hydrocephalic with the Hapsburg jaw and epilepsy, poor fellow.

It was discovered at Charles II's autopsy that he was actually a couple of ducks that had somehow gotten stuck in a sack full of straw.

Hey, aren't you supposed to be packing, not reading?

471 The Mitch Ryder & Detroit album is one of the great rock and roll albums period. Even Lou Reed said that Ryder's version of Reed's Rock and Roll is the definitive take. Johnny "Bee" Badanjek's drumming just doesn't stop and Ryder has rarely been in finer voice. Steve Hunter, who went on to success with Reed and Alice Cooper, does a searing guitar solo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mag6jxiHXXk

473 Rock legend Mick Jagger attacked US President Donald Trump for his rudeness and lies Saturday and for "tearing apart" environment controls when America should be setting the standard for the world.

The Rolling Stones singer said he was "absolutely behind" young climate change activists who had earlier occupied the red carpet at the Venice film festival, where he was starring in the psychological thriller, "The Burnt Orange Heresy".
