10 I love Medieval art

11 I just really don't like this whole art phase before they figured out how perspective works. It's all flat in a weird isometric way. The composition looks like it was done on graph paper -- so rigidly stiff. All the focus should be on the central character, but your eye is bombarded by gobs of meaningless detail.

Ick.

20 This is a masterpiece of early Renaissance mathematical or linear perspective. It is trompe l'oeil. The composition is designed where all orthogonals converge at the base of the Cross, which is average eye-level back in the day. It illustrates the Christian metaphor of "coming to the foot of the Cross" for Salvation.

I guess the girl with the dishpan on her head is Mary, because Father and Son have dishpan halos.

I really hate this kind of art. It's not art for art's sake, it's a drawing so that a priest can tell a story to illiterates. The only reason to like it is if you like Jesus you can say well it's a drawing of Jesus and I like Jesus.

47 I was surprised by the artist's ability to capture depth and perspective and detail in such an early painting. I suspect the colors were much more vibrant when first painted. The skill of the work, the symbols (most of which I'm probably missing), and the religious message must have made this a powerful painting. Also, the expressions are not as wooden as many I've seen from that general period. How sad the artist died in his mid-twenties.

54 Time for this weekly repost:

Predictions for someone to google and point to and say what do YOU know anyway:

Won't make it to Iowa:

Marianne Williamson (ultimate vanity candidacy, she won't be able to qualify for the ballot)
Wayne Messam (Who? Exactly)
Tulsi Gabbard (she's burned too many bridges)

Drops after Iowa:

John Delaney (self funded vanity)
Andrew Yang (self funded vanity)
Julian Castro (old, old news)
Amy Klobuchar (last finisher for the women)
Kirsten Gillibrand (next-to-last finisher for the women)
Seth Moulton (maybe - he might not get to Iowa, candidacy doesn't have any reason for being. Against the Iraq War? So was/is Trump.)
Eric Swalwell (candidacy is to troll Trump - a costly way to do it)
Jay Inslee

Drops after NH:

John Hickenlooper (honestly I just needed to put someone here)

Drops after SC:

Beto O'Rourke (he can fund himself past a poor showing in Iowa, and the big dropout after Iowa will make him look like a mover until he gets to SC)

Drops after Super Tuesday:

Elizabeth Warren (nobody really likes her anyway - Super Tuesday will demonstrate that definitively)
Cory Booker (he will already be reeling from going nowhere with the black vote in SC)

That will leave the field with this:

Joe Biden
Pete Buttigieg
Bernie Sanders
Kamala Harris

Bernie will run to the convention regardless of where he is. But he is already done.

Now here it gets tricky - Harris I don't think can win but the Dems can't let the last candidates all be white men. UNLESS - she drops out, immediately endorses Biden, and Biden says, immediately, I will be glad to have her on my ticket when we get to the convention. Despite the fact I think he won't win, this might actually make him win. If those campaigns are too bitter with each other to do that, that only leaves one candidate:

Buttigieg

Well, what do I know anyway?

Turns out that Amy Klobuchar is more popular than Kirsten Gillibrand. Who knew?

I did not factor in the debates as events in the primary. Only 10 of this crew made it, that is what took out Inslee and Gillibrand, likely more will drop due to this also.

55 masaccio was cutting edge avant garden in his time. we see him as part of larger cultural, philosophical, social and technological changes we call the renaissance (e.g. one-point perspective = reason, science and naturalism). my point in defending picasso and cubism the other day was that he also representative of cultural changes of the twentieth century and why shouldn't there be a change in art as well as everything else in how we live and see the world.

Posted by: Gref at September 03, 2019 09:48 AM (RmuOe)

58 The dove as a symbol comes from several places but was the "offering" at the temple from the very poor. The symbol as the Holy Spirit comes from the baptism narrative and also reintroduces Noah's dove, ie life after death from the deluge, or life after going down unto death. When the masses on the banks of the Jordon saw the dove, they'd immediately think about "sacrifice." The dove, like the lamb of God, is a sacrificial symbol.
In Trinitarian theology, the Holy Spirit is a person who exists from the love between the Father and the Son (the Word, or how God describes himself).

64 OK, something about this one was giving me a headache, and I just figured out what it is. That "sense of depth" I mentioned earlier isn't consistent through the piece. The top of the vault is deeper than the bottom. Thing is, the visual cues for the structure the Father is standing on indicate both the back of the vault and a spot near the front, depending on how you trace the perspective. I don't know if this looks different to someone viewing the actual piece on display or it's just something off...or it's intentional, which would actually be interesting itself.

65 For a painting from the 1400's the anatomical detail (arm musculature in particular) is amazing. The pectoral configuration seems a little off and the linear continuation of the iliac crest toward the symphysis pubis seems wrong.

Darn. It's got all those Vs instead of Us, and the words look like they run all together the way Romans printed everything. (I doubt it says "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.")

147 The patrons of the artwork (the folks who paid for the work to be made) show up A LOT in Renaissance art. It was the quickest way to show everyone who saw it how pius you were. And if you could get the best artist to create the best religious work, extra pius-brownie points. Renaissance art patronage is essentially a competition between the ruling classes of Italy and Europe who could out-class/out-pius each other. The competition gave us some great art tho.

155 Completely O/T or inspired by this painting.

I happened to come across a video on Youtube of Barber's Adagio played by a string quartet. The Adagio was written for string quartet but it is rarely heard that way. I've heard it played by full orchestra, a capella choirs, even Canadian Brass. The quartet form is much better. You can hear each note of each instrument as they wax and wane and combine for that glorious harmony. The heartbreak and resolution Barber instilled is clearer in this simpler format.

Search on "Barber: Adagio for Strings, Original Version, Dover Quartet". You'll thank me later. Like the Wexford Carol by Alison Krauss and Yo Yo Ma, it is beyond exquisite.

Now, I'm not going to argue one way or the other. But I don't see how this is news outside that school and that community, especially when the diocese itself is saying "it's not our call, it's up to each individual school priest."

A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself "Are Bernie Sanders and Rand Paul likely to have different opinions on this topic?"

If the answer is "yes", be very, very careful about trusting Wikipedia, 'cuz 90% of the time you're going to get the Bernie Sanders view.

Wow. Just, wow. How can we survive as a nation with psychos like him in any position of power? That's pretty much the Prog Motto, which is another reason (as if we need any more of them) to vote each and every Prog out of office and keep the rest of them from getting into power.

They're not hard to find these days, as they're all out and proud to be anti-Americans, as if that's some sort of virtue to aspire to.

I've seen depictions of Him as thin, but nothing I'd call skeletal. The thinness could be that He was a wondering preacher, and those types usually depend on the kindness of strangers for food. Therefore, they are thin because they don't eat regularly? That's a guess tho. A lot of depictions use contemporary knowledge as a baseline. That's why a lot of Biblical scenes dress people in Renaissance clothing. It's what they knew best.

Here's Dolly, pleading with some other chick not to take her man, and I think it's highly unlikely any woman has ever taken a man from Dolly, unless she wanted him took.

So... it occurred to me... maybe Dolly... maybe SHE is the Jolene! She's singing it as she's hearing it from the other woman. Starts to make sense that way.

Another option you can consider is getting a premium subscription to Spotify, which I think is $10/month. They often run introductory specials with the first month free or 99 cents a month for the first three months. You can download playlists (ones that are already there, or make your own) and play them through your phone without using data. No commercials either.

You can also listen on your computer, of course.

Can't do that. She's in the country illegally and needs to be removed from office today, arrested and deported. She misrepresented her case for citizenship and lied to get into our country. Every vote she cast in Congress is null and void because of her lying.

Like I said, we need to get serious. Having an illegal in Congress should enrage everybody in the nation. And we need to make damned sure it never happens again.
