That is a law that needs some serious changes. I had to take down my bird feeder because of grackles and cow birds which are also protected. When I was in CA in the 70s State law they had to close at 2 am if they served liquor and could not open until 6 am. If all they served was beer and wine there were no set hours in the law.

Here they can not open until noon and must close at 2 am unless saturday, must close at Midnight.

We get them at our feeders. There seem to be neighborhood grackles and roving grackles.

The neighborhood birds are a group of four or five and seem calmer. The roving flocks have two or three dozen birds and are very skittish. Just waving a hand by the window panics one bird and they all fly off.

70 There are over 800 species are currently on the list. There are exceptions for game birds like dove and quail because they are covered by "game laws" and limits. And the law allows you to apply for a permit for some migratory birds like crows and their cousins the grackles and cow girds.

Starlings are brownish and variegated in color with a yellow bill. They are a bit nasty. I prefer grackles.

I had a similar thing happen on a Sunday while out of town. Since I've been told I'm at high risk for detachment, I went right in to ER. The ophthalmologist they called instructed me to meet him at his office. Turned out to be PVD - posterior vitreous detachment, which is treated with moisturizing drops and considered to be non-sight-threatening.

Especially if they were small floaters like a bunch of pepper grains.

You need to see your opthamologist ASAP.

That could be a retinal detachment .

If you're approaching "29", it could be a vitreous detachment, which isn't serious but sometimes you can get retinal tears or detachment at the edges when your vitreous fluid detaches.

In any event, see your doc ASAP.

190 179 I was reading one of Bruce Catton's books. The North
could have won in 1862 but instead of having a Patton as general we had
a bunch of Montys: conscientious, knowledgeable, even courageous
soldiers who wouldn't move unless every button was done up.

The South's problem wasn't the Generals. It 3was Jefferson David who micromanaged the Generals. Lee hated his ass. Lee could have taken Washington DC early in the war but Davis order him back.

At the end of winter, the buzzards return to Hinkley, Ohio. The town puts on a watch for them, and has a big pancake breakfast. It's kind of a fun big-deal.

Hinkley was just down the road from where I once lived in suburban, Cleveland, in North Royalton.
It's actually a nice little town in the high rolling hills, and most of it is all forested over with big trees and evergreens. Home to the buzzards.

Indeed, sounds like a PVD (posterior vitreous detachment). The posterior chamber of the eye is filled with collagen fibers and mucopolysaccharides that are remnants of the embryonic vasculature that fills the back of the eye during development, that magically degrades and becomes transparent before birth. The vitreous is loosely attached to the retina in a ring around the optic nerve and major drainage veins. As we approach the age of 29 (50+ in Moron years), the vitreous liquefies and can pull away from the retina.

This gives the flashes, caused by mechanical traction on the retina, and a sudden shower of floaters, which usually subside in 1-2 weeks. There is a small statistical chance of retinal detachment, so a full dilated retinal exam is recommended initially, followed by a follow-up exam at 6 weeks (the chance of retinal detachment is almost nil after 6 weeks). Almost everyone does well, but the floater(s) can persist and be a bit of a nuisance, but do not affect the health of the eye.

277 My take on McClellan was he built up this great army and didn't want to see it ruined or take the chance of losing.

281 First of all I would like to say fantastic blog!
I had a quick question in which I'd like to ask if you
do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before
writing. I've had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there.
I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are
usually lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or
tips? Thanks!
