Some actors are only good if they're playing the (actor's name) part. Arguably, that's not really acting at all.
Example: Bruce Willis. He can be entertaining when he's playing the Bruce Willis part. I don't think he'd do well in Hamlet, though. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at August 18, 2019 02:22 PM (b1Typ) 64

Since most Hollyweird actors are 'woke', I think a better question would be: Who would you part with your hard-earned dollars to see in a film? I have very few in that category. Michael Caine is one but then, he's from an older Hollyweird. Most of the newer actors simply suck donkey dick as they take themselves oh so seriously, being actual parodies of good actors. That's why I agree with the comments about Dwayne Johnson -- he doesn't take himself so seriously.

DiCaprio's a lightweight but ok. For some reasons most of his movies are spectacles where the movie sort of happens around him, which may not sound like a compliment but I think it's harder than it looks.
Nick Cage doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. He's not a great actor but he may yet achieve a sort of Shatner-esque cult status someday. Posted by: GalosGann at August 18, 2019 02:48 PM (z6Rh+) 227

I think it's difficult to overrate an actor. The best one can be is "good/satisfactory." Like a ditchdigger.
A ditchdigger can be conscientious and a good worker, but nobody is going to be raving that so-and-so is a "ditchdigger par excellence, truly without equal in his time. This unmatched virtuoso of the dirt-pile staggered me with his performance... he's the clear front-runner for Mudchucker of the Year." The art of filmmaking is in the hands of the set crew, the cameramen, the screenwriter, the musicians, the makeup people, SFX, the director, he'll... the caterers are more skilled than the actors. The actors just do as they're told. Their only real value is looking good in the costumes, and parroting written lines. You can be bad at that, but it's damn near impossible to be great at it. Fat actors? John Goodman is easily the best.
And he's still alive. - Not by much. In a 2009 interview, Goodman opened up about his alcoholism, saying, "I don't know how much the old Jackie Daniel's franchise ruined my memory, which is going anyway, because of my advancing decrepitude. I had a 30-year run, and at the end I didn't care about anything. I was just fed up with myself. I didn't even want to be an actor anymore." In October 2012, he said, "If I'd picture in my mind a drink - usually straight out of the bottle - I couldn't not do it." He said that, while acting in plays, "I'd have the shakes so bad I'd have to have a drink to get through the show. I'm lucky I never got fired." Eventually, he "bottomed out" and has been sober since 2007. He tries to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every morning. He coaxes this movie along slowly and slyly, and it builds. The scene at Spahn Ranch is great -- grim and foreboding. My only quibble was that I thought DiCaprio's performance was overly broad. Many good cameos. Damien Lewis, who plays Steve McQueen, does an uncanny impersonation.

John Wayne is a great movie star
Posted by: REDACTED at August 18, 2019 03:05 PM (+8+gB) Wayne also had range. He did not get a chance to use it often, but he had it. The Searchers and Red River are examples. Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 18, 2019 03:06 PM (ycWCI) Not sure if this is an apocryphal story or not but Wayne idolized Harry Carey Sr and on a movie they were making he brought up to someone that he wanted to do roles outside of being John Wayne on screen. The person pointed to Carey and said, Would you want him to play anything but the roles he does? Wayne said, No. And the person said, Well that's how your fans feel about you too Posted by: TheQuietMan at August 18, 2019 03:13 PM (p+3oP) 436

We always looked to see if he was around. One nice Saturday afternoon, we saw him outside and we were jumping up and down waiving, and he waved back. Was a real highlight!

A good actor makes you forget that you're watching an actor, the performance becomes a real person whom you feel.
Posted by: Bandersnatch, fish brag pics welcome at e-mail in nic at August 18, 2019 03:09 PM ------ This is impossible when you're famous. I can't forget I'm watching an actor unless they're unknown. In other words it's a skill that can be exercised (perhaps best) by a worker with the least experience. And I was a good-looking kid who had to take a couple acting classes for Comms credits, and I kicked ass at it, with zero interest and commitment. All you have to do is read the script for context so you know what the character is "supposed" to be "feeling," and then mimic that. A child can do it. It's basic reading comprehension. Which is what James Stewart did for basically his entire career, playing variations of himself. I don't necessarily mind that if the actor is interesting to watch. What I do object to is top actors getting first offer of plum roles playing real-life famous celebrities when they're clearly not the best actors for those parts. Alec Guinness was another actor with tremendous range. From the Ealing comedies to Bridge on the River Kwai. Here's a quote from him in 1999 one year before his death that stood out to me considering our times and he perhaps saw our current insanity 20 years ago. "We live in an age of apologies. Apologies, false or true, are expected from the descendants of empire builders, slave owners, persecutors of heretics and from men who, in our eyes, just got it all wrong. So with the age of 85 coming up shortly, I want to make an apology. It appears I must apologize for being male, white and European." Posted by: TheQuietMan at August 18, 2019 03:34 PM (p+3oP) 600

Waterworld wasn't *horrible,* in my opinion. It was decent.
It was beyond horrible for its investors. It earned a little money, but nowhere enough for the time, money, and effort they stuffed into that turkey. Universal was still trying to get return off of it for years by leasing set pieces (notably for Titanic, and for the Waterfalls video by TLC). Just working off of your list, Streep and Pacino are fine, but over-hyped actors. Benning is scenery and not attractive scenery. Ruffalo, I saw in some early work and haven't seen since outside of the Hulk roles. He's a journeyman, Stiller is a troll and I see no talent whatsoever. I have never understood his appeal and anyone can play the roles he has had.
The Star system of the Golden Age of Hollywood is long gone. There is no actor living that I would pay to see. I look for stories that interest me. Contrast that to say watching Ronald Colman or Cary Grant and any of a number of screen goddess like Greer Garson, Maureen O'Hara, Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn, just to name a few. To be fare, until a few years ago, I would pay to watch Pam Grier on the big screen just to see her, the story be damned. Posted by: Locke Common at August 18, 2019 04:01 PM (NanIO) 723

My favorite William Powell movie: "The Senator Was Indiscreet." Politico keeps diary of party's secrets. Reporter learns of this and tries to get it. Hilarious repeated scene: "You Know Who" calls "Theodore" to tell him to alert officeholders to pack for a getaway. It's quite a long list. A sample: "Major Culpepper in New Orleans. Colonel Culpepper in Birmingham. General Culpepper in Atlanta." Posted by: Weak Geek at August 18, 2019 04:30 PM (xa57W) 821

I'd put Robert DeNiro in a class by himself as the most over-rated "actor" in the history of film.
He's been trading on two movies, Taxi Driver and Godfather II, for going on 50 years now, and has been doing nothing but crappy work in crappy movies the entire time. I'd make one exception, the movie whose name I can't at the moment remember, where he's the owner of a jazz club in Montreal and a jewel thief by night (in cahoots with Marlon Brando). Stiller is nails-on-a-chalkboard unpleasant for me. Has he done anything that isn't sophomoric and formulaic?
I liked Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 18, 2019 06:37 PM (7A4qQ) 912
Annette Bening was very good in "Open Range" - which Kevin Costner directed. Beautifully photographed, well acted, a good story. The gunfight at the end is stunning. One detail I liked is that the entire scene was presented without music. It's as if Costner was saying that this is too serious, too important to be tarted up with music.
Ben Stiller was good in "Flirting With Disaster" and "Tropic Thunder" (which Stiller produced). The "Night at the Museum" movies are good family shows; for the adults, the opening scene in the second film, which Stiller played with his real-life mother Anne Meara is hilarious, and touching. Ruffalo is a one-trick pony; but I think he does what he does pretty well. Posted by: Brown Line at August 18, 2019 06:57 PM (S6ArX) 913

Long ago, I enjoyed watching Tom Hanks and Will Ferrell. But have not seen either one in a movie in years. On the other hand enjoy a lot of character actors, who are often under rated. Such as Adam Baldwin, Thomas Hayden Church and Alan Tudyk.

Leonardo DiCaprio (great in "Blood Diamond")
That's not right. Whether you hate DiCaprio or not, he is excellent in all his roles and he tends to pick pretty good roles, on top of that. He is not overrated, at all. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at August 18, 2019 07:27 PM (UILOn) 920
Shit. Shit. Shit. Has anyone mentioned Tom Hardy?
He's so under the radar that even I, a serious movie moron, forgot to bring him up. He's top tier, just like Rockwell. he can do comedy, action and drama. Shit. Sorry, Tom. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Actually Irish at August 18, 2019 07:35 PM (8qegj) 921
920 Tom Hardy was great in Inception. Not so great in Dunkirk. Then again he had no lines in that movie.

Robert Redford, Joaquin Phoenix, Rosanna Arquette, Patricia Arquette, Idris Elba, Sigourney Weaver, Renée Zellweger . . . it would be easier to list the ones that AREN'T overrated.

Tom Hardy:
Lawless Bronson Band of Brothers Black Hawk Down Rock n Rolla Hell, even Star Trek: Nemesis. He was not the reason the movie sucked. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Actually Irish at August 18, 2019 07:52 PM (8qegj) 925
Out of Africa is my favorite Meryl Streep film. After that, not so much.
And of course in the last 15 years you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one of her films. "Overexposed" doesn't do it justice. She's the Hollywood equivalent to the politician who shows up for the opening of an envelope. Now they've cast her in the Little Women remake. That's almost a dealbreaker for me -- though I've seen every version of my favorite book. Maybe I'll just close my eyes & go "Lalalalalalaaaaa" while she's onscreen. He wasn't a leading man but can I give a shout out for Dan Duryea? He played the best funny/psycho characters as in "Ball of Fire", "Winchester '73" and "Night Passage".

Most overrated in recent years: Hanks - every single character is wooden and on the surface. Also Kenneth Branagh. His Henry V was competent, but he was outshone by everyone else. Most of his modern stuff is rubbish.
Best modern actor: Heath Ledger hands down. The layers he could create in a character were bottomless. Second Gary Oldman. Underrated female: Anne Hathaway when she gets something she can get her teeth into. Overrated: Streep, always. Posted by: Ozwitch at August 18, 2019 08:55 PM (g2hCr) 928

........ He also played "Fredo" type characters before there was a Fredo. The dopey, indolent, inept son or relative in a rich family. Posted by: Garth Hudson at August 18, 2019 09:25 PM (ffwQz) 930
Most overrated:
Keanu Reeves (he pretty sets the bar for the worst of the worst) Al Pacino (he plays Al Pacino in every film he does)Tom Hanks (Hanks has phoned it in since the Clinton administration. I just rewatched Castaway. It was torture. I wanted to pop the damned volleyball and drown him in the surf.)DiCaprio (I don't get it. I just don't. King of the World, my ass)Barbara Streisand (stick to singing. Babs) and from old movies:Mary Astor (The female Keanu Reaves of her generation but had other, ahem, talents that kept her as a fave to studio execs, ) Posted by: Ombudsman at August 18, 2019 09:52 PM (/LVF4) 931
1. Robert DeNiro2. Tom Cruise3. Ben Affleck4. Nicolas Cage (I don't think he is A list, but some may)5. Charlie Sheen (ditto)
I can't think of a single A list actress.... Posted by: BLBeamer at August 18, 2019 10:02 PM (jJbWk) 932
I would love a National Treasure III. On the Adam Carolla show a few weeks ago, Cage said this is the role he would love to reprise but it has never got off the ground. Too many other Disney movies see to get in the way.

NeoOtter said any Fondas. Including Henry. Have you never seen "Grapes of Wrath", "The Ox Bow Incident", "My Darling Clementine", "Fort Apache", "Mister Roberts", "The Wrong Man", "12 Angry Men" (his best), "The Tin Star", "Spencer's Mountain", and so may others. You only talk of his late career movies. He was truly a Hollywood icon.

Probably ought to change the Stiller part to include the exception of Walter Mitty - - That one probably redeems a half a dozen of his others.
