Ambush? At Least Four Philadelphia Police Officers Shot by One or More Gunmen Firing Many Shots
There are only two options here:
This is either a "white supremacist" ambush, in which case we must militarize the government to "crush" this threat; or it's an ambush of cops but not by white supremacists, in which case... meh. We'll just suck it up and never talk about this ever again.At least four Philadelphia police officers were shot in the city's Nicetown section Wednesday afternoon, officials said, prompting a massive response to the North Philadelphia neighborhood. At least one suspect is in custody. ... The officers crouched behind cars, blocked off surrounding streets and surrounded several nearby homes as the scene, described as an active shooting, unfolded. Officials said at least four officers were shot and taken to the hospital. They have not yet revealed their conditions. Police also said at least one suspect is in custody though officers continue to search for a second.The neighborhood is rated as an "F" in terms of crime and employment. Soon we'll find out if this is a white supremacist crime which must be taken as a grave omen we must heed with utmost seriousness, or a funemployment-noncrime that it's racist to even discuss.

On a bit of a tangent, this is something that has been noted a number of times recently in Syria and Crimea when comparing 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R vs. 5.45 and 5.56.
Units equipped with the lighter rounds have run into issues where opponents with the heavier rounds are spamming bullets through the floors and walls, and they have trouble returning fire because their higher-velocity, lighter rounds aren't carrying through the same materials very well.
Doesn't mean 5.56 and 5.45 are no good, but you have to keep the limitations of what you're using in mind.

I'm from Philly, and lived in the city for many many years
I also go to Boston a lot, and really really like it!
I think the cities are similar, but Boston is much nicer overall. The size and scale of our ghettoes are impressive. Center City itself is pretty nice, but there are some very adjacent iffy areas still (like, north of Chinatown).
Boston is more hilly. Philly is a nice simple grid (and flat).
We both have rivers in the city/thru the city.
Boston more walkable but both are walkable.
We have better food

Units equipped with the lighter rounds have run into issues where opponents with the heavier rounds are spamming bullets through the floors and walls, and they have trouble returning fire because their higher-velocity, lighter rounds aren't carrying through the same materials very well.
Doesn't mean 5.56 and 5.45 are no good, but you have to keep the limitations of what you're using in mind.

Those neighborhood ratings things are flawed in some kind of serious way.
I grew up in a rural area. Crime was low, across the board. Very low. The town about 10 miles up the road is sedately peaceful, and most of its inhabitants are the "well-to-do" of our area. It got a C-. By that rubric, you would have to have no crime, full employment, and a huge tax base to be considered an "A." Like a utopia.

Uniformed officers hit the house with a search warrant for narcotics. Resident started shooting. Five officers injured so far, and the shots are still ringing out. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
My first day back from vacation and this has to happen in my division. I am literally the only person in the building, because I have to keep the bosses informed and answer the endless phone calls from bigwigs.
I'm okay, and SWAT is about to hit the house.

Not to get all gub thready, but you can get some pretty significant changes in penetration by changing up bullet weights within the same caliber. Seems to me the gain in weight more than balances the loss of velocity for a lot of rounds.

Uniformed officers hit the house with a search warrant for narcotics. Resident started shooting. Five officers injured so far, and the shots are still ringing out. None of the injuries are life-threatening.

..Standard issue since the 249 and M16A2 rolled in (i.e, when dinosaurs roamed the earth) has been various iterations of 62 grain projectiles. First the green-tip rounds with steel penetrators intended to defeat warsaw pact steel helmets at range, then the much newer brown/bronzeish tipped stuff which is much, much better.
I don't pay much attention to the new stuff because it's mostly unobtanium for the civ market. The older green tip stuff you can buy all over the place may pen better on a few things (most notably hard Dyneema plates), but it's often less accurate than normal FMJ, costs more, and fails to pen cheap steel plates that 55gr FMJ will defeat.
The original 7.92x33, the 7.62x39, and other similar rounds (7.62x35, aka .300 blackout) do have some redeeming qualities in terms of dealing with windshields, auto bodies, and common building materials. You sacrifice effective range to get it though.

In the north that's pretty much the way it is. Born and raised in the Northeast, I was kinda shocked when I once drove through Tennessee and stopped in a small town off the interstate to get gas....and lo and behold, lots of black people. -- I can see some validity to that. There's places up in east Tennessee, western Carolinas I'm not sure I would care to be if I were darker-hued. Well, at least they were like that 30 years back.
On the other hand, there are dozens of neighborhoods in Atlanta I wouldn't drive through right this minute.

There are rifle-proof ballistic shields, but they are HEAVY, and take two or three officers to move, and they can't shoot while doing it. Forget about going up any steps while you're at it.
If nobody's bleeding out (presuming their still in radio/phone contact with the guys inside) and they're barricaded in a safe spot, slow is the way to go. If they're bleeding, then, yeah, time to smash in the wall with an SUV or MRAP and away we go.
