Joe Biden: The United States Can "Afford" to Absorb Another 2 Million Destitute Immigrants and Refugees, and It's "Bizarre" That We're Not Already Doing So

He also says we must "unite" -- as a single people, a single citizenship, I guess -- with the world's immigrants and refugees.

Kerry Picket at the Washington Examiner:

Joe Biden called for the United States to increase the number of immigrants and refugees from its current acceptance rate.

During a campaign stop hosted by the Asian & Latino Coalition PAC Thursday night, the former vice president pointed to nations with present conflicts that the U.S. should be accepting refugees from.

"We should change the priorities in terms of whether or not who is able to get in line. We should be uniting family. We should be uniting them. We should also be looking at the whole idea of what's going on in terms of Diaspora that's occurring on across the world," Biden proposed, noting the Trump White House refugee admission policy difference since he left the White House.

"Four million people are fleeing Venezuela. What do we do? We're not allowing temporary status at all like we did in Haiti," he said.

PS, the "temporary" refugees from Haiti have been here for almost ten years.

There is no such thing as "temporary" in the federal government, least of all temporary protected status for immigrants and refugees.

Anyone think the DACA card holders are merely here on a "temporary" basis?

The Trump administration has already cut refugee admissions by one third this year to 30,000.

Let me put it another way. We could afford to take in a heartbeat another two million. The idea that a country of 330 million cannot afford people, who are in desperate need and who are justifiably weak, and fleeing depression is absolutely bizarre," Biden said.

So, Open Borders then, yeah?

41 The way our immigration law works is once a person is here, it's incredibly difficult to remove them. Then when we track people down who have been ordered deported by a judge (usually after years of litigation) we're "heartless".

Got it.

I have a suggestion for Biden. Why don't we just roll 3rd ID out of Stewart and 1st and 5th Armored out of Bliss, then take every country south of the Rio Grande. It would be faster than moving them all here.

Posted by: Marcus T at August 12, 2019 02:25 PM (8ts9m)

42 Joe needs to understand the difference between "can afford" and "can pay for." Let's assume there are no bad externalities (like crime, changes to culture, etc.) and it just a matter of cost.

If I have $30k saved up in the bank and I earn $50k a year, I can pay for a $30k car - but I can't really afford to buy a $30k car.

Or, to use something closer to Biden's approach, if I hear $250k a year and have $2m in debt, I can't afford to spend $15k on a car or anything else because regardless of my relatively high income and the relatively cheap car, my debt service is consuming all of income.

I think its an example of what we were discussing earlier - the dem race is being dominated by the far left, and every candidate is pushing in that direction, just to keep up. If you're here to make demands of us, to make a living on public largesse while demanding that we change our laws and lifestyles to suit you, kindly shuffle off to wherever you came from and get off our lawn.

105 And PS, the law on TPS [Temporary Protected Status], under which the Haitians and others have been allowed to remain here, specifically excludes judicial review of policy decisions taken thereunder.

And get this - a "court" has nonetheless brazenly defied the law and presumed to insert itself into a policy change, delaying/blocking it.

And sit down for this - the WH and DOJ have meekly gone along - that is, refused to uphold their oaths, and uphold the law, and proceed with the policy change.

Tweaking the personnel in the judicial system is not a solution to constitutional derailment and judicial lawlessness. And if Congress won't defend its prerogatives, the law, and the constitution [and it won't - it's kind of amazing, in two decades Congress has largely ceased to exist as the central constitutional actor it is designed to be] - that leaves the executive.

And the executive shows no signs of fulfilling the dire forecasts of Scalia, Thomas, and even Roberts [spit] that the judiciary was courting repudiation.

So I listened to bernie sanders on Joe Rogan's podcast the other day.

Joe really tried to nail down some details on Bernie's plan of "taxing wallstreet speculation" to pay for medicare for all and for free college and everything else, and uh -- yeah Bernie didn't really have an answer. He just said "most trading is done by algorithms, and if we tax those speculative trades at half a per cent, we'll raise billions of dollars a year. It will also stop a lot of the wild speculation." (which, er, means you won't get your billions of dollars a year, then, no?)

I was pretty impressed with Joe, to be honest. Because I've been wondering the same thing. Like, explain to me exactly what you're talking about, without resorting to bullet points. I want to hear details.

Looking at the 'moderate' Joe Biden, he was the one who opened the door to gay marriage under Obama, giving O cover when he was the first to say that it was ok. This was after it was the 'moderate' position to say out of that fight because it was out of O's 'pay grade'.

Joe has tacked to the prevailing political winds his entire career. The way he's racing to repudiate his past positions to stay relevant with today's primary voter tells you all you'd need to know if AOC and a Majority Leader Schumer was somehow able to put the Green Nude Eel on President Biden's desk to sign.

In fact, one question that any of these 'moderators' should ask is this: is there any liberal position that you would veto if it ever got to your desk? No MSM person would ever ask that question because they don't want the American public to hear their answer - NO.

167 So basically, Genius Joe's platform on immigration is that we should be the welfare office to the world.
Good luck selling that to a nation full working-class people who can't manage to find $400 for an emergency, Gropey.
Working-class people, it should be added, who your policies (with an eager assist from the US Chamber of Commerce) have caused to suffer frozen wages, deteriorating services, and a general (and rather steep, in places) decline in their quality of life since the early 1990's.

Frankly, I'm a little worried about the Chinese. The Chinese nationals I know / knew (mostly foreign exchange students) seem to have a very... inflated view of China.

Like, they actually believe that the US would never go to war with China, and if we did, we'd lose miserably. They also actually believe that we need China more than China needs us. Even when I say, "the average american consumer doesn't care if their socks are made in China or Vietnam, and I can't imagine that there would be much of a price difference there."

Several of them said "the US would never go to war to defend Japan." and it's like "errr... yeah, I think we would."

"Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids." --- Joe Biden

--- This is something a Real White Supremacist would say.

A real white supremacist knows deep in his heart, automatically that blacks and other minorities are always poor, because they gosh darn it!, just aren't as good as whites. "It is the way God intended." They will pat them on the head, and humor them like they do with children.

Real White Supremacists can be the most patronizing people to deal with. The KKK didn't want to get rid of blacks, they just didn't want the blacks to "get uppity" or start thinking they were equal to white folks. Got to keep them in their place where they belong.

It was his flip on the Hyde Amendment that convinced me he was toast.

Not that the Hyde Amendment was magical or that anyone was going to remember the flip, but his flip was so awfully handled, unnecessary for the overall race, and protracted that I couldn't see him winning anymore. He was going to end up flipping on every "moderate" position he ever held to cater to the far left, providing a host of reasons to vote against him from a moderate perspective.

And yeah, people are largely not paying attention yet. Iowa is still just under 6 months away.

It isn't the sanctions or other governmental actions that will do the most damage. I noted a few times last week that Beijing's latitude here may well be limited by the fact that they can't really risk what will happen to their investment/financial/uncertainty situation, already serious, by launching a bloodbath in HK. Guess we'll see.

Some think the point where we can't even keep up with the interest will be significant. idk, I think they just move on to full QE ... why pay any interest and bother with lending? Lending was to impose discipline ... complete failure so just print, like continental currency for the first revolution.

Inflating the markets just makes the oligarchs even richer, and those with debt more indebted to them. We are getting an oligarchy via the proxy of monetary policy. And they get to keep their slaves, foreign and domestic.

===========

If they lose in 2020 (especially if it extends so far as a loss of control of the House), I think the split will begin.

They'll be completely out of power at the federal level again. They will have lost to literally Hitler twice in a row, and the civil war within the party that's been low level fought for a few years will explode.

The establishment will try to push out the far left. The Far Left will do the same. One faction will gain control of the party apparatus (the DNC, DCCC, etc.) and purge it of the other side, blaming that other side for the loss. The losing side in that won't take the purge kindly and will flock to another party, if not start their own.

For America, Democrats must lose in 2020.

Being the strongest country isn't equivalent to being dominant in the fashion the US currently is.

324 Like, they actually believe that the US would never go to war with China, and if we did, we'd lose miserably.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at August 12, 2019 02:42 PM (GBteo)

I am not as sure that the military is as strong as it once was. The navy had a bad problem of crashing into other ships for a while there which points to some serious training and personnel problems.

The U.S. will not go to war over Hong Kong, and perhaps not even Taiwan. Japan absolutely. China's military has been improving significantly in recent decades, but how much is questionable. They certainly aren't better than the U.S. but given the numbers they don't have to be.

It would be a naval conflict and the Chinese are betting that their missile forces are large enough and advanced enough that they will penetrate the carrier battle group missile defences. I think the jury on that is still out but it could be a paradigm shift if they are right.

Economically there are very vulnerable, but if it comes to that the financial house of cards may come down for everyone. The derivatives and debt owed by almost everyone cannot be repaid.

It would be a shitshow all the way around.

The idea is it's a family of wealthy Venezuelan Marxists who are fleeing Venezuela with the money they stole, uh, saved during the good times under Chavez and now they're seeking political asylum to hang on to their loot that the new government is trying to reclaim.

But because they're refugees from Venezuela they move in with Joe Biden, who thinks they're poor, and he spends a lot of time calling in favors with his government buddies to outwit the Venezuelan government who Joe thinks is being run by Stalin. So he takes them out and buys them things and speaks "Spanish" to them by talking loudly and adding "O" to the end of every he thinks sounds like it should have one on it.

Oh, and they have a teenage daughter who he's constantly groping by accident.

*most* of the high tech manufacturing can shift almost immediately to Thailand and South Korea, two countries that already do a decent amount of our tech manufacturing.

As for the low tech stuff? Frankly, I'd love to see "made in Guatemala" on my next snow shovel I buy at Walmart. That kind of manufacturing could really happen anywhere in the world with lax labor and environmental laws and a large pool of very poor people willing to work for cheap.

I just don't see what China brings to the table that's unique to China, other than their current supply lines and the sheer scale of what they manufacture. But supply lines and scale can both be, um, scaled up pretty quickly if need be.

379 I've wondered why Africa doesn't get in on this.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at August 12, 2019 03:10 PM (YqDXo)

Well, two reasons:
1) most of africa is disorganized as fuck with no real infrastructure and all kinds of related issues
and
2) China has 40+ years of negotiating favorable trade deals with us.

There are countries in Africa that could, conceivably, definitely get in on it if we wanted to let them.

I think India is eyeing this China / US situation and rubbing their hands. Modi has been on a big "MOAR MANUFACTURING!!!" and "stop buying shit from China, buy India!" crusade.

If we gave them the same favorable trade deals we give China, I think we could see an overnight shift of "made in china" to "made in India."

I don't know if India is necessarily a better deal for the US economy, or US workers, or whatever. But from a pure geopolitical move... if I were trump, i'd at least pretend to make moves in that direction.

A land war? Eh, it'd be a shit show, for sure.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at August 12, 2019 03:11 PM (GBteo)

The bases are the problem. Most U.S. bases are a fair distance away which means sortie rate and wzrloads are considerably reduced. The other option is to bring the carrier task forces to within a reasonable operation range of Chinese mainland and naval forces. That risks major naval assets.

I think the Chinese navy would be destroyed but the cost might be fairly high, due to their other assets.

If Taiwan gets involved that changes some things but china has over a 1,000 theater range ballistic missiles for airfield attack. Trying to set up U.S. squadrons while under attack would not be easy.

I don't think it would be simple or easy for either side.

Americans pulled up their bootstraps and weathered the depression and worked to make America the greatest fucking country in the world again.

When is ANYONE in this country --- politician, journalist, "celebrity" --- going to say what needs to be said to these people:

Stay home and fix your own gawddamned countries!!!

THAT is what is "absolutely bizarre". That every Democrat, Leftist, journalist and "celebrity" in America wants every fucking poor person in the world to be let in to America. Why does NO ONE ever say "why don't we help them make their countries as good as the USA"?

495 So we are running a trillion dollar annual budget deficit but we can easily absorb millions of destitute teat-suckers?

497 We don't need a lot of things, but it isn't at all bizarre that we avoid losing those things. We can survive a bunch of things, but it isn't bizarre we avoid gaining those things. Humans don't go out of their way to obtain things they don't want, they also don't go out of their way to lose things they like. If we're talking about bizarre, it is the democrat's obsession with doing the opposite of what is normal.
