What happens when the loser of a war demands reparations and territory from the victor? If the question seems ridiculous (and it should), it nevertheless accurately describes the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. What’s most remarkable though is that Israel continues to underwrite Palestinian society with territory, money and autonomy—all of which the Palestinians freely admit they will use to fight Israel. The latest wrinkle in this bizarre situation finds the losing party refusing $50 billion in economic aid because the cash deal does not force the winning party to give up everything it has won since 1948. That’s right, the Palestinians have refused to even negotiate the Trump administration’s so-called “deal of the century” because they know that it will not grant them a “right to return” and claim land in Israel.If these deluded fools had accepted the status quo...the existence of the state of Israel...and had simply gone on living their lives, Gaza would be livable, the West Bank would be wealthy (at least in Middle-Eastern Arab terms), and their children would be doctors and lawyers and businessmen instead of moldering in Israeli jails and Arab cemeteries. But the Palestinians are sad puppets, ruled by kleptocrats who are themselves manipulated from afar. And it will always be so, unless they finally come to the realization that they have lost, but that will not happen in our lifetimes.

And that cuts down militancy in two ways - first, people in their 30's and especially 40's tend to be much less hot headed and militant than those in the teens and early 20's; and also, after a few years of any long running war, all of those who were truly eager to die for "The Cause" will have found a way to do so. The remaining population will necessarily be those who may have talked about it, but never really bought into the idea. And that's the people left in Gaza and the West Bank today. Sure, there will always be a few lone wolfs willing to go out in a blaze of glory - but an army? The ones who would have made up that army are already dead.

1) Palestinians in the West Bank are eager to attend Israeli technology colleges there, because completing these courses leads to good jobs on the West Bank.
2) Israeli work permits are the Holy Grail for young Palestinians.
3) Demography is helping Israel, not hurting it. The PA birth rate is falling, altho the PA govt hides the fact & lies about it. The "big bump" in the percentage of young Palestinians (think of it in terms of our baby boom) is moving through the population curve now, & coming out the far end.
Something similar happened to the IRA Provos-- they got middle-aged, & building bombs & shooting people no longer seemed a very attractive vocation..

I recommend "The Human Tide: How Population Shaped the Modern World" by Paul Morland. It deals with the historical impact of population growth and decline, ranging from ancient civilizations to the modern world, including Palestine. Although it overstates the case at times, examples like Palestine are very instructive. Much of human history comes down to how fast the population grows.

I am of the view that the Palestinians are worse off in this ambiguous state then they would be if they had simply been ruled as a territory or vassal state. I remember seeing a genetic study from a few years back where a researcher was trying to answer an old question of who were the Phoenicians were, where did they originally come from? He thought he could find out by looking at today's Lebanese.
He was quite disappointed, although his results told quite a story. He found that today's Lebanese had strong genetic signatures from Mesopotamians, Arabs, Africans, Greeks, Italians, and Western Europeans. Looks like every army that ever went through (and that was just about all of them, ever) left people behind, and they've all just melded together.

Years ago I learned that when one someone starts lipping off about Israel, Zionism, "Palestinians," blah blah blah, to begin the discussion by bringing up a couple of salient points in the history of the conflict.
When they inevitably have no clue what I'm talking about, I tell them as gently as possible that the conversation is basically over, and that they need to crack a book on the subject if they want to debate about it with people.
The number of conservatives I've met (outside AoS, of course) who know the history isn't huge, but it's significant. The number of of liberals who do is a statistical anomaly outside of ME Studies departments.

I'm not going to participate in any part of "giving lefties what they deserve"--or even deciding what they deserve. But when they look to people like me for reaction, I'm going to consider the relative harm of somebody saying a single word to you, however dickish, as opposed to dining out with your family and everybody decides that your family has to go, and repeatedly harasses everybody at your table until you leave.
That Cuomo would flip--TF--out, threaten to brownshirt somebody, because he was "out with his family" at a single word, and he almost approved violence if you call the people you're hitting "Nazis" first, shows that there is no balance with this guy.
As a person who has overreacted in front of his family (but not flipped out) I found that the most unpleasant thing about the evening was seeing me overreact--not what somebody else did that riled me.
Cuomo has some damage.

So that should be enough.

This is an example of a movie's subtext being satisfying but the text of the film failing to work that well.
It's a delicate narrative balance, and I think The Deer Hunter ultimately fails in its most important scenes. It's not enough to make the movie bad or anything, just to drag it from great to good.

I think it clashes with the rest of the film. Melodrama on its own isn't bad, though hard to do well (On the Waterfront, for example, is pure melodrama, but it's done well).
I don't think the rest of the movie fits in with that feel, so the ending sticks out.
