Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Evening Movie Thread 08-10-2019 [Hosted By: MovieGique]The King's Letters The Koreans? They don't appreciate what they got, frankly. The Boy (and His Girl) and I had carted The Flower down to the OC for a day-long artistic boot camp, and we trundled over to the Orange County version of Koreatown (which I guess is, uh, Buena Park?) to see this historical drama—and a wildly entertaining action film, Exit, that trounced this one at the box office. We saw this one first because we figured Exit would be more light and fun (it was) but I came out of this thinking: Why can't we get movies like this in America?15th Century Korean King Sejong tries to figure out why modern American movies suck. This is a historical drama based on a theory of how Korea got its alphabet. The premise is that Korea is under China's thumb. The Confucian ministers are speaking Chinese in court (until the King corrects them) and presenting documents in Chinese. But the King, who is the literate type, is frustrated because the books he has written—writing books is a kingly thing in Korea if the movies are to be believed—are in Chinese and (therefore) impossible for his own people to read. He wants to create a Korean alphabet but he's stymied because all he has to go on are Chinese phonetics. While he's fretting over this, a Japanese contingent comes and says, "Hey, give us your tripitaka." The tripitaka is the Buddhist scriptures, carved in wooden blocks, and the King is astounded. "You want our national treasure?" he asks disbelievingly. They say, "Yeah, you guys are Confucians anyway, so either hand 'em over or just kill us 'cause we can't go back without them." The king demurs to do either and is told by one of his counselors that the only one who can help him solve is alphabet problem is a pig-headed Buddhist monk named Shinmi. He's smart. He's a jerk. Smart jerks are the worst. The late Jeon-Mi Soon plays The Queen. I'm just trying to imagine this scene in "My Fair Lady". Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Just finished "Upgrade". Pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Cyber-dystopia, nanoweapons, bio-enhancements, some almost Cronenbergian body modifications. The lead guy, Logan Marshall-Green, was in the wretched "Prometheus", but don't hold that against him. I like foreign movies because they usually have a plot, actors and actresses chosen for their acting ability and are subtle for the most part in their moralizing (more likely to give you big picture morals, like "what's truly important in life" or "the value of honor", etc).
American movies, for the most part, just suck anymore. It's either 'splosions, CGI or some sodomite/racism/girl power trope. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at August 10, 2019 08:22 PM (OrcEf) 21

The history of Asia over the last 150 plus years was a bloody one of European colonialism, Japanese militarism and on going civil wars and wars of "liberation".
But the nations of China, North Korea and Vietnam, instead of turning to their long histories for guidance and foundations after 1945, adopted communism which was the product of two layabout German scoundrels. King Sejong must be turning over in his kimchi jar. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at August 10, 2019 08:23 PM (Z+IKu) 24

I watched this kind of amazing film on YouTube, called "Winterbeast." Supposedly it's from the early 90's but I doubt that.
It has some adorable stop-motion animated monsters, but the really unique thing about the film is that everyone behind the camera constantly made the wrong decision 100 percent of the time. It's really one of the worst films ever made, and it's kind of fascinating (in a boring way--if you watch it, prepare to be bored a lot) how wrong it all goes, in every way. In front of the camera, the acting is almost non-existent, except for the main villain (spoiler alert) who is clearly having the time of his life in every scene. It really plays like a film made by aliens trying to mimic human behavior. Kind of recommended, but it's boring mostly, so I'm warning you in advance that it's boring. So don't blame me if you find it really boring. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at August 10, 2019 08:31 PM (l9m7l) 35
The thing about Korean movies and Asian movies in general is they are an amalgam of the great American and European directors with a healthy dose of Joseph Cambell's, Hero With A Thousand Faces.
So when directors like Tarantino, Lucas, etc. get accused of ripping of Asian directors, they really are ripping off John Huston, John Ford, etc. Posted by: Radical Centrist at August 10, 2019 08:33 PM (wGXrV) 36

The last Korean movie I can remember offhand is Eorin Shinbu (My Little Bride), which was apparently made in a more innocent time, as it's a light romantic comedy that's not anywhere near as skeevy in execution as the premise makes it sound.

I come across a couple Korean movies while drifting on Amazon (or was it Netflix?). One was about a detective (c.1750 AD) and the other was about an assassin (?) who worked for the King. The detective one (it may have been called "The Detective") was both a comedy and a drain the swamp movie and a detective movie. Not completely successful (as may be imagined) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The assassin one was interesting in a sort of samurai (yes, I know- alliteration) soap opera way. And of course there was the very cool "The Admiral". The Koreans are on a movie tear, while the Chinese have lost their way (because, I believe, of increased gov't censorship in what they can openly say-- fatal to drama). The Japanese seem to be going backward with the overwhelming manga type stuff they've done the last ten years). I have always enjoyed Asian movies as they come from a different perspective and therefore are often interesting even when the quality is not quite so good.

In the story of the Korean Language, it's surprising that Sanskrit played a role. Sanskrit was phonetic, and vastly different from Chinese, because it's one of the most ancient Indo-European languages.
It's interesting how, with respect to all of the far eastern cultures, classical Chinese played virtually the same role that classical Latin did in medieval Europe. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 10, 2019 09:16 PM (V2Yro) 125

Just saw The Lion King. Hated to give the evil empire the money, but the family really wanted to see it. Not bad. I'd say it lacked the energy of the animated version, or perhaps you are so busy marveling at the CGI, which was very impressive, It was chock full of Toxic Masculinity in a good way. It, seriously, showed the use of violent response in self defense including the use of a weapon (gasp!) - Rafiki the Mandril pulls out his martial arts stave/walking stick and describes it with great affection as "My Old Friend" - not as much footage of him smashing hyena heads with it as we would want, but he's clearly using a weapon in defense of self, family and society. The only actual deaths were Mufasa and Scar, it's PG. Mufasa's death had some younger kids in the theater upset, it was legit intense. Scar was really well done. I hate fucking hyenas. It had some SJWankers voicing I could always do without. SPOILER BELOW One major character comes out of the closet and minces it's way through the movie. I'd say see it on streamer or a friend's torrent. Value may be in using it with kids as a tool to discuss self defense of your home and family, perhaps to illustrate Heinlein's statement about live lions. Posted by: chavez the hugo at August 10, 2019 09:36 PM (KP5rU) There are actors and actresses that have good instincts and generally choose good movies, like Duvall. I've been trying to pick my favorite Robert Duvall role. Kind of impossible. But I think it might be Gus McCrae (I know, TV miniseries), but holy hell he was good in that. Hell, the whole cast was outstanding. Tommy Lee Jones was spot-on as Call.

I watched The Adeventures of Superman this morning and the opening scene in one episode rivaled anything Tarantino ever did. It was great. It opened with the inside lobby of a motel in the mountains, the camera was panning the lovely room, everything was nice and happy with touristy things on the walls, and then panned over to a body laying face down on the floor. Happy scene over. Enter Lois. Posted by: Soothsayer -- Fake Commenter at August 10, 2019 09:44 PM (fw8Gs) 202

Duvall is like the anti-Nick Cage. Duvall has an uncanny ability to pick the best scripts and get a part in them, even if it's a small one. For example, he's a taxi driver in Bullitt.

I agree with TJM -- the current American movie scene sucks. Part of it, I think, is because Hollywood has been sucked into the present ambiance of "America bad". I'm not that up on American history, but I do know that there are many historical events that could be spun into terrific movies. Every Fourth of July, Himself and I hide in our pathetically window air conditioned living room and watch "Gettysburg". (We also used to watch the extended "1776" , but neither of us can last that long anymore.) I remember a lot of pro-America movies from when I was a ki d.
But movies like that are no longer acceptable. If a movie has anything to do with America, America and Americans must be shown in the most negative way possible. Nevermind that those movies usually flop, and the movies that actually make money are the pro-America and pro-American ones. I saw Spiderman Far From Home and enjoyed it. (I'm 29, and I gave up reality a long time ago.) But I don't think I will be watching any more MCU movies in the future. They lost me when they decided Thor should be a female. A second possible cause is simply the lack of American history. Most of our history covers only about four hundred years. I skipped out of as much American history as I could because to actually fill out a full year of it, they covered every damn economic event during those four hundred years. I was majoring in history, not economics. Korea has at least two thousand years of history to draw from, China even more, although Japan has less. But all of them have more history to draw from, and, just as important, they're not ashamed to show themselves in a positive light. And a third possibility is the terror of failure. Before the era of megaplexes, movies tended to hang around longer, getting the chance to build up an audience the long and slow way. Today, a movie debuts in thousands of theaters, frequently in half the screens in one complex. If the movie doesn't make bazillions of bucks the first week, the "experts" declare it a failure. So the movie companies fall back on the tried and true -- either a sequel or a remake. Original spells failure to the industry execs. And finally, what happened to the book industry is happening to the movie making industry -- merger mania. How many major companies has Disney scooped up these last few years? Disney is leveraged to the hilt and isn't going to risk anything. Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin at August 10, 2019 10:11 PM (eP3XU) 241

You know where most movie theaters show ads and crap before the trailers? Alamo creates mini movies relating to the movie you will actually watch. I've often said that what ails us as a nation has far closer historical analogies to what happened in imperial China and the confucian world than anything that happened to Rome. We have, unfortunately, acquired a mandarin class - the illness of all our large bureaucratic organizations seems to have reflections in the old confucian rule of "the best and brightest".
It turns out the best and brightest, most learned men are best and brightest at backstabbing, ladder climbing, and byzantine court intrigue, not in anything actually useful to anyone. Posted by: Madrocketsci at August 10, 2019 11:46 PM (K+Kza) 255
