37 Given the angle of his stance, and that he's already up on tip-toe, it appears he's about to take the plunge.

Removing all doubt is the fact that he's about to trip himself up with that instep behind his ankle.

There's no recovering from the momentum evident in that painting.

Guess he's gonna be "all in" for her, one way or another.

90 Sherlock Holmes and Lady Irena, discussing Occam's Razor by the pond.

I missed the Occam's razor discussion last thread, but here's an important point that I didn't see being raised: When multiple people *predict* an unlikely event 3 weeks in advance, along with a detailed reason as to why that unlikely event is about to happen, then when it happens exactly like they said it was going to, Occam's razor says they were right. No other level of the razor applies.

It's like a man who walks into a Roulette game and for his very first and only bet, puts down $100,000 on Red 23. When Red 23 pops up and he wins, Occam's Razor doesn't say he just got lucky - Occam's razor says that the Game was Rigged.

The guy is supported by the pole, but bareley. Probably only by his elbow, as her hand is between his shoulder and the pole. It's possible that his whole arm is against the pole, but that would mean he's also leaning on her hand which does not suggest quarrel.

So, he's very precarious, but balanced. His hands are behind his back, his feet are crossed behind him. He looks very tippy.

I've decided to have confidence in him. I think he has it in himself. He's taken no defensive posture because he's not worried. Should he slip he'll just alight on that little shelf she's walking on.

109 I like how the light tan of the man's suit is the same tone as the ground, while the rest of the painting has a darker tones. This pulls the lighter tan into the darker areas and locks the two sections of the work together like a dovetail joint.

You bring up an important logical point that people forget - for example, with the lottery, it can be called the "lucky blade of grass" effect. When a man drives a golfball down the green, it's impossible to predict which blade of grass the ball will land on - but it's 100% predictable that it will end up on a blade of grass. (unless he's a horrible shot)
Predicting the general case is easy, predicting the specific case should be impossible.

When the specific case is clearly and exactly predicted, then random chance is no longer an operative factor. The outcome was controlled.

example in the lottery context - the infamous McDonalds cash prize contest, where after a couple of years, it turned out that the Friends and Family of one of the men involved in printing and distributing the game pieces won over 90% of all the millions in prizes that were handed out. What an amazing coincidence. (he was finally convicted, but it took years to build the case)

I've decided to have confidence in him. I think he has it in
himself. He's taken no defensive posture because he's not worried.
Should he slip he'll just alight on that little shelf she's walking on.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at August 12, 2019 09:52 AM (fuK7c)

He's not worried because he's a sociopath. The reason they are both so calm is that she's terrified and he's manipulating her to keep her quiet. She's just discovered the body of her best friend in the cellar. Now, she hated her sister and suspected her of sleeping with the guy, so she's actually glad, but she's worried that he's going to do the same to her, but now he's inviting her to join him in his predatory behavior and she's resisting, but fascinated and terrified at the same time. She'll cave. All of this is obvious.

First, it was just a rhetorical example that occurred to me off the top of my head. But even taken at face value, someone who confidently gambles a huge amount of cash, all they have on them, on a 1/40 chance is either insane, or has very good reason to know that they're not gambling at all - that the button under the table by the table runner's hand is set to red 23, and he's already been paid to push it.

241 LAMPEDUSA, Italy (Reuters) - Hollywood star Richard Gere on Saturday urged the Italian government to stop "demonising people" and instead help migrants who have been stranded on a Spanish charity boat in the Mediterranean for more than a week.

"Given this generous millionaire is voicing concern for the fate of the Open Arms migrants, we thank him: he can take back to Hollywood, on his private plane, all the people aboard and support them in his villas. Thank you Richard!" he said in a statement.

right, thanks for answering. Barr did not protect his witness but left him to the DeepState machine in NY. How easy it would be to have special protection, and certainly notification of the suicide watch status, special cameras put in, make sure he had the right cellmate, but preferably two guard right there the whole time.

It occurs to me that, if Bernie were indeed correct, then anybody owning the means to any of those things today would be holding a liability rather than an asset - because that person would, by definition, be required to share it all.

Why, skeptic such as myself might even avoid creating the means to such things at all, so as not to be compelled to share. Enough like-minded skeptics get together, and the very thing Bernie wants to give to all suddenly reduces in supply altogether.

Bernie better hope there are quite a few folks out there that believe in a Higher Economic Power that are willing to make these things he wants to give out, even though there seems to be no logical motive that I can discern to do so.

In the absence of the enterprise, the 'right' to a 'decent' job is vacuous.

358 349 As best I can tell, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the grandson of John Tyler, is still alive today.

John Tyler was born in 1790, one year after George Washington became the 1st President. He had a total of 15 grandchildren with his two wives, with a son named Lyon Tyler being born when he was 63 years old. (that would have been 1853) Lyon Tyler also had a first wife who died, and who took a young wife when he was old. Lyon Tyler had a son named Harrison, born when he was 75 years old. (that would have been 192
and Harrison Ruffin Tyler is still alive today.

Whenever somebody makes a moral argument that appeals to one's moral intuition ("it feels wrong that gay people shouldn't be allowed to get married") I always wonder why they expect that their moral intuition must be impeccable when you can put forth a question about compound interest, the Monty Hall problem, or quantum physics and see how bad people's intuitions are on much more demonstrable phenomenon than morality.

The street smart guide to Probability.

Here's what I found - trying to apply my small bit of formal statistical education to real life. Reality didn't follow the Bell Curve. Error in manufacturing and such was rarely "random" for me. Measurements usually came in clusters, which when you dug hard enough came down to specific tooling or materials or even measurements themselves other things that weren't very random at all.

So you lived with the error or you fixed it if you could afford the time and money. But life didn't follow the Bell Curve - because the dice were rarely "fair".

417 2 flips as one event has the odds of the 1 flip to the power of 2

3 flips to the power of 3

Each individual event on its own is independent of how many flips have already taken place

1 coin flip = 1/2

2 coin flips coming up heads, as an event on its own 1/4

3 coin flips coming up heads, as an event on its own 1/8

the 4th coin flip coming up heads, goes back to 1/2 since each coin toss on its own is independent.

449 GM, Volkswagen Say Goodbye to Hybrid Vehicles

Toyota, Ford plan to keep hybrids as core part of their lineups, showing split in auto industry

Auto makers for two decades have leaned on hybrid vehicles to help them comply with regulations on fuel consumption and give customers greener options in the showroom. Now, two of the world's largest car manufacturers say they see no future for them in their U.S. lineups.

General Motors Co. and Volkswagen AG are shifting the bulk of their future investment into fully electric cars, seeing hybrids, which save fuel by combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor, as only a stopgap to ultimately meeting tougher tailpipe-emissions.

This topic brings up an issue we often ignore - first, yes, Barr *should* have made sure that better care was being taken of Epstein; but on the other hand, this points out the immense difficulty that Trump, and Barr, and other loyalists have faced in trying to do their jobs. Consider being suddenly put in control of an organization with thousands of employees, and hundreds of mid level managers of varying degree between you and those employees. You want to assume that your organization is on your side, but how do you start when you suspect that a big part of your organization is covertly working against you, and trying to thwart you on every turn? How do you choose which ground level decisions to insert yourself in, given that there are tens of thousands of decisions being made, and you cannot possibly review more than a tiny fraction of them?

This was why the old political spoils system, where *everyone* was fired and replaced when a new administration took over, was not necessarily a bad thing.

And curiously enough - I do well not assuming the next card will be a "ten". I assume an average of twelve cards, excluding the ace, which is exactly 7. You can include the ace either high or low, depending on the circumstances, to shift that to 6.7 to 7.3.

Prediction - GM, having fallen in with the California regulators, and Volkswagen, having fallen completely under the control of the EU bureacracy, have decided to gamble everything, including their future existence, on the political benevolence of the side they've chosen to support.

true, but at the top of the list would have been protecting Epstein while in (mob run) NY. Many people were screaming about that in advance ... was pretty obvious, at least that it was a threat to be given special attention. It was NOT given special attention.

But in other things, yes, much of the Resistance are sleepers, that rise up as needed. And there is the DeepState ability to threaten and coerce, since they are spying on congress and judges even. 480 I suspect GM is betting on a split US market - California demanding electric cars, while the other 49 states allow the same old same old. GM is betting that California regulators will give them essentially a monopoly in that state, since other makers won't make that investment at the price of pissing off the other 49 states.

I think it's a bad bet, because I think if Trump gets a 2nd term, then the EPA is going to revoke California's ability to set it's own tailpipe emissions standards. That's a bit of inside baseball with respect to enviro law, but I see a strong possibility that GM goes bankrupt for real in about 5 years because of it.

And repeating what we've said before - this a rehash of the fight about so-called "positive rights" (what the government MUST do) and "negative rights" (what the government may NOT do.

That's the genius of the Bill of Rights, it is a summation of "Negative Rights" with respect to Government Power - these are things the Government may NOT take away from you, the individual. The Government is Limited.

With so-called "positive rights" such as those Bernie is calling for, and which were in the Soviet Constitution; if Government is given the mandate to do those things, Government must have the power to compel people to provide those things. It's a subterfuge to grant absolute Totalitarian Control over all aspects of economic life to the State.

And that, of course, is why Leftists love the idea so much.

The technology to make it work for your whole automotive lineup isn't here yet. And barring an unforeseen breakthrough, it isn't around the corner.

538 I need vermin advice.

I think there are carpet beetles/larvae got into my storage unit and there is no explanation for their sudden presence except transfer from some other unit.

I'm worried about brining eggs home on items stored (nothing is there for them to eat except one chair, which wasn't infested when it went in there a year ago.

What do I do?

So my son graduated college in Williamsburg, va and his summer sublet lease is up in a few days. I went to move light wooden furniture that belongs to me from his apartment into the climate-controlled storage unit I have kept down there for about a year dor convenience's sake.

It's always been clean as a whistle heretofore, but this day there were horrible dead larvae all over the floor and in the crevices. I'm thinking they are carpet beetle larvae though they were rather large.

There is one upholstered wing chair in the unit, but it's been there since the unit was rented, and it has no signs of direct infestation. There is one pair of rubber boots with a fake fleece lining, otherwise no clothing or soft furnishings, all kitchen gear is in sealed plastic containers.

A bag of cleaning supplies (giant blue IKEA bag) I took out a couple weeks ago had been on the floor but there is no sign of bugs in it. (I made a panicky search of it because it's in my sons apartment now)

So this is new in the last couple of weeks.

I saw a few sporadic larvae in the hall right near my unit, dead.

Most of the stuff in there is light furniture, rolly carts, boxed gear, a clean dehumidifier (stored, not being used) a *very* clean mini fridge in its box and one box with papers I just put in there.
