H/T Legally Sufficient

Good afternoon Horde. Yes, it is time for the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Please take some time out of your busy schedule and enjoy the world of pets.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Are you a dog owner? The 10 Commandments for dog owners.

I can't imagine being a vet. What a tough vocation. They with patients who cannot communicate. They interact with emotional owners. They have to deal with deadbeats, keep up with continuing education. And lastly they euthanize our family members when it is time. What vets think about pet owners.

***

Although summer is quickly coming to an end. That means winter is right around the corner. When is it safe to leave your pet in a car? An excellent and educational read. H/T Hrothgar.

Meet The PetMorons

ktpetthread.jpg

Our first photo today is from a Moron by the name of Tom. He submitted this photo to KT to pass along to us. The pups are Kaz and Darla. Sorry I don't have any other information to pass along.

Greetings MisHum, may you live forever!

To stock the depleted archives of Moranimal photos I provide the following:

Ella, my sister's dog of Highly Mixed Parentage and total glee. Since my
sister is an accomplished photographer and likes to play with Photoshop
the photo was given the daguerrotype process for fun. As is traditional
Ella is clearly abused and neglected and sometimes does not get fed for
MINUTES!

Two pics of Diesel, the camera-hog of my two cats. In one he is lounging
on his personal footstool (he lets me use it sometimes) to absorb
photons, a critical task for black cats. He may be saving us from global
warming with this selfless action. Like Ella, clearly underfed and abused.

In the other photo...you know how cats like to sit in sinks? That's not
a sink. That's my bathtub. Which should give you an idea of how HUGE he
is. (And when he falls asleep on my lap sometimes my legs go numb...)

Keep up the excellent work with the Pet Thread! It is an oasis of happy
furriness.

Sabrina

Live forever? Guess who will be going to work every Monday morning forever? All kidding aside, thanks for the well wishes. Quite the cat you have there. What team does Diesel play linebacker for? And what can we say about Ella? Hope she survives the abuse.

Here is one of a cat I've sent a photo of before: Tigre. In this shot our most
photogenic of kitties posed with his front paws in daddy's slightly oversized
shoes. Tigre never met a door he didn't want to go in and out of, over and
over and over. One day we had a cat door installed to save on heating and A/C,
but Tigre was waiting for US to open it the next morning. After several tries
at showing him (he's pretty, but a little slow) he finally realized he could
go through the cat door all by himself. He zoomed in an out of that thing for
hours, ecstatic. - Wendy

Sometimes the least gifted are the most fun to be around. Tigre sounds like quite the card. Thanks for sending his photo and the story in.

Mrs. E plants catgrass and Madison ‘Lucky” LaMore eats the bunch in less than 4 hours. Doesn’t seem to harm her either. Won’t give her catnip cause she is already too hyper. - Eromero

Maybe Madison 'Lucky' needs to switch to decaf catnip? J/K. A lovely looking cat. Appears to have quite the fan in Mrs. E.

This is my friends Great Pyrenees wearing my hat. She is the sweetest dog. Her name is queen. Can you make this submission anonymous? The ultimate moron dog?

Since you are a regular Moron, your wish is granted. Although a pink JD hat might mean you're a girl or Jonah Goldberg.

Sorry about the political reference.

bitterclinger1.jpg

This is my cat Cleo.

Cleo is a shelter cat of about 16 years raised on my farm since she was a kitteh. She had a yellow tabby litter-mate sister, Sunny, that stayed outside and would not come in except to eat and sleep when cold. She also would not come near me, except when I was indisposed, so to speak, at which point she would circle through my legs while I was seated. Bastard ass coyote got her about 3 years ago.

Anyhow, Cleo has a bowl of fresh water inside the house and one on the porch, but of course moron cats are gonna moron. I guess you get to be that age you drink wherever and whenever you damned well please. - Bitter Clinger

Nice to see a regular commenter also submit photos to the Pet Thread. It is nice to know that moron pets are going to Moron. Sorry to hear about Sunny's demise. Coyotes are scum.

***

So that wraps up another AoS Pet Thread. Thank you everyone for the submissions. You make it all happen.

If you have something you wish to share with us you can contact us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Hope you all have a great week!!!

8 I have new little kitten that showed up om my front porch. He is a tiny little thing that had no business roaming though this neighborhood full of unleashed dogs. But she is staying on the porch for now with food and water. I don't know what I am going to do when winter comes. If I let her in the mean grey cat I have will probably kill her.

13 It seems that the deaf cat of my original feral pair has also vanished, probably those damn coyotes.
I was worried about that one because she had no hearing defenses.
There is a new gray cat lurking but mostly invisible (I have only seen it twice so far). I am still feeding the gazebo cat, but she seems to be failing as well, very scrawny, but still capable of yowling about the cuisine quality.

14 Excellent Moron pets, and friends of Moron pets!!

I appreciated the article on vets. My nephew just graduated from A and M as a vet, with a specialty in equine podiatry. He did this with a broken shoulder and losing his wife of 23 years.

He's a tough fellow, but I shudder to think about him facing clients who are obstinate and unhelpful.

(It also is a nice reminder to me to be much better to our precious vet. He's been through the wringer with us over the last six months, losing two dogs and gaining a trainwreck of a puppy.)

19 So, a warning to all y'all

I know a lot of us 29yr olds have joint pains and arthritis and sometimes use anti inflammatory topicals like voltaren (diclofenac is the generic) . These are HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs and cats if the lick it or rub up against you while you have it on your skin.

My sweet Lucy is in the kitty hospital right now after licking this off of her fur on Sunday. She is in acute renal failure, but they are hoping with IV fluids, rest and medicine, she will recover. When I visited her this morning she looked better than last night and has eaten a tiny bit of tuna.

Our four legged friends mean so much to us. Their unconditional love is a blessing from God. Please pray for her recovery and ask St Francis of Assisi to intervene on her behalf.

Thank you.

Prayers for Lucy from me and my two kittehs. And while we're on the general topic of human medications, a word from my vet: Never give a cat or dog a drug formulated for humans unless your vet tells you directly to do so and gives you an exact dosage. Even if the drug is an over-the-counter pain remedy like aspirin or ibuprofen. As for prescription meds: Keep them out of pets' reach. It doesn't take long for a kitteh or doggeh investigating a handbag or open cabinet to find a bottle of pills and start playing with it.

Anyway, prayers for Lucy's recovery will keep coming.

36 From your 'veterinarian' link

The suicide rate for veterinarians in the US is higher than the national average, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found last year.

I have a hard time believing that. Being a vet is stressful but rewarding. Unless you're an asshole like the last one I worked for, and only in it for the cash and the pills. Otherwise - good people

Some of the issues are that vets are often heavily in debt, it doesn't pay as well as say human "doctoring", it's hard to have to euthanize animals all the time and they know all about drugs to "put you to sleep" if they get severly depressed.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 10, 2019 03:36 PM (+0VWg)

41 FYI -- any cleaning agent ending in -sol is poisonous to cats. I was told this by my friend who used to breed and show Himalayans. I do use small amounts of Lysol when I clean the bathroom, but I make sure the door is closed during and a while afterwords to give the air a chance to clear. I haven't had any Pinesol in the house since Pat told me about the -sol issue.

46 Fen - that does sound like a heavy load to bear. I was blessed, and I mean really blessed, to work with a good vet for most of my animal-career. Very frugal - never in debt. Saved enough to retire at 50 and become the pastor at his church. Euthanasias he mostly made me do the heavy lifting, because I'm pretty good with the whole empathy thing. So I got used to it, I guess. Lord knows I've been there myself enough times, so I knew how the owners were feeling. I also loved cleaning and pulling teeth. Go figure. I was the NGU of the animal world.

That day was today. They're telling me that "Buddy," who has been acting male all week, is actually a girl.

I don't really have space for a cat in my life, but there she is.

I have a theory that cats are all really French.

Imagine any cat with a beret. Not so out of place, is it? The slight curl of the lip to signal it's contempt for the world around it. The sniff at the petty offering of what you have the temerity to call 'food'.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 10, 2019 03:52 PM (ycWCI)

58 About vets and suicide: here is a link to a 2018 article from the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association about suicides among veterinarians. Yes, it's full of the usual jargon about statistical analysis that's par for the course in medical journals these days, but it does contain good information.

https://tinyurl.com/y267h2my

To get to the core of the article, skim down to Table 1 and click on "Open in a separate window" at the lower right to read the full list of stressors that vets experience and some typical comments from vets about each one. It doesn't surprise me that social media is a major stressor.

They certainly have a higher tolerance level for hear than humans-I suppose from originally coming from warm and warm or humid climates. 65 I have been very fortunate in my choice of vets. We moved to our current location in April of '82. In the middle of the move, the cat decided to develop a bladder infection. We took the cat to the closest vet, and stayed with her until she retired a couple years back. I don't know who she sold her practice to, but they seem to be maintaining the same staff and standards.

Nearly fifty years ago, just after Himself and I got married, we lived in a farming town a couple hours from Omaha. The vets couldn't believe it when I brought in a kitten with ear mites to be treated. They were all big animal vets and the people they dealt with didn't give two thoughts to their dogs or cats. Dogs and cats weren't worth anything and they were free. They finally added a small animal vet to their staff because the town people were losing that farm mentality and beginning to value their pets.

88 Tres bien.

My female cat is named Coco, after Mlle. Chanel, and is a true Frenchwoman as far as her grooming is concerned. Would be happy to be brushed and combed 24/7 if I could manage it. OTOH, she has no trouble cuddling up to my dude cat, who is named for a baseball player/manager of German descent (Casey Stengel). I have yet to hear her call him un sale Boche (dirty Hun)-- maybe because he clearly enjoys her company, nuzzling her and recognizing that when the Fancy Feast is dished up, Her Majesty gets the first plate. Once fed, though, she will follow after him when he does his inspection tour of the household. I'm glad they get along so well together!

96 So glad to read this Nurse, and thanks for the warning about the voltaren (diclofenac is the generic) . I use the horse version (surpass.) I have one horse that would probably let the stupid dog lick it off his leg, if he ever needed it. The rest of the horses won't tolerate that much dog goofiness but Tanza adores playing with the dog, I gave up trying to correct the dog from pestering the horses when we were fixing fence and Tanza was bored and pestering the dog to get a game of tag going.

102 Back in the day, I had a blog called "My Cats Are French".

A photo of my triplet cats was the avatar and the tagline was "They are often haughty and aloof. They have a serious aversion

unshaven. They are certain of their superiority to the point of
arrogance even though they are neutered. But unlike the French, these
boys are sweet, lovable fur balls who do not care for Jerry Lewis
movies. And they never, ever surrender."

My mother lives on 60 acres south of Waco. she swears on a small pack that incorporates:
a great pirenese (the brute squad)
a lab/corgi mix (the brain)
at least three terriers (for the pack's intestinal fortitude)

evidently the terriers are excellent guards, but lack the size to go at coyotes, the lab that wont stand up will go into the coyote fight and start gutting everything while the brute squad executes the ones the height challenged lab wounds. the three terriers stand around dancing and yapping encouragement.

127 PaleRider - mom is on her 3rd or 4th ghost dog. She keeps them shaved so the Texas heat doesn't bug them too much and provides a kiddie pool that the whole damned pack lounges in for cooling off. She uses a horse watering system to keep the level at around six inches so the terriers can relax as well as the big dogs. Her two geriatric arabs (i SWEAR those two horses think they're dogs too) try to join the dogs but the pool has a split rail fence to keep them out.

Speaking of the horses, they've raised about 14 years worth of feral pigs. At dusk, they head down to the bottoms near the creek and the pig herd comes out. The babies all gather around the horses while the adults graze in the tall grass. The horses keep the coyotes away from the babies. When i visit, i leave the horses in the barn after evening feeding and slip down to my favorite cottonwood for some piggy meat.

Posted by: BifBewalskiBot - sofa king we todd did at August 10, 2019 05:32 PM (VcFUs)

128 Bif, you and your mom are way more expert than I am. We only had the one GP since we only have horses no little critters needing protection. Mia didn't like to get wet, even when clipped in the summer. She did decide that bad critters would not be outside in summer heat and would relax in the house until evening --then it was like the old Looney Tunes cartoon with the G-Pyr dog and wolf/coyote clocking in and she would insist she had to go outside and to the guard thing. But I do like to warn folks thinking of getting a G-Pyr to be aware of the barking in case they have close neighbors that would complain.

129 Thanks all! Last time Diesel and his brother The Efficient Baxter were weighed they clocked in at 20 lbs each, and that was a couple of years ago. They have not gotten slimmer. I'm pretty sure my guys aren't French. British upperclass twits, maybe. They both have their tuxedos on for a spot of fun at the Drones club but Baxter missed a few buttons (his bib is crooked) and he has a milk dribble from one side of his mouth. The only way to tell them apart and it is CRUCIAL to do so because Baxter is safe-tummy and Diesel is...not. Not without protective gear anyway.
