The Saturday Night Joke

An Italian Funeral

A Jewish man was leaving a convenience store with his espresso when he
noticed a most unusual Italian funeral procession approaching the nearby
cemetery.

A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 feet behind
the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary Italian man walking
a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men
walking in single file.

The Jewish man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the
Italian man walking the dog and said: "I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a
bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen an Italian funeral like this.
Whose funeral is it?"

"My wife's."

''What happened to her?"

"She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her."

He inquired further, "But who is in the second hearse?"

My mother-in-law. She came to help my wife and the dog turned on her and
killed her also.

A very poignant and touching moment of Jewish and Italian brotherhood and
silence passed between the two men.

The Jewish man then asked "Can I borrow the dog?"

The Italian man replied, "Get in the line." H/T Hrothgar

First California, next the entire nation. Say goodbye to metal knives.

SACRAMENTO, CA—In order to prevent crimes of stabbing and reduce metal and plastic waste, the state of California has signed into law a requirement that all cutting implements be replaced with eco-friendly, 100% recycled paper knives.

Beginning in January of next year, restaurants, homes, and other businesses will be required to replace any sharp-edged tools like kitchen knives with new paper models. The paper models don't actually cut per se but do help you feel like you're doing something to help. People across the state are expected to cut their steaks, bread, and fruit with the flimsy knives that fold, crumble, and dissolve into a fine dust the second you try to cut anything.

I recently ate at a premier steak house. It was a premier joint, but definitely not this ritzy.

Apparently, fine wine isn’t the only thing that gets better with age, so does steak (at least the right kind). At $3,200, the 2000 vintage cote de boeuf (rib steak) is the world’s most expensive steak. So what makes a rib steak at Boucherie Polmard worth so much? I talked to its owner Alexandre Polmard to find out.

Tonight's history lesson. It appears that Norse vikings had one hell of a beer hall.

The Vikings are not only known for their prowess in war but also their penchant for drinking — with a particular fondness for beer and mead. The latest archaeology discovery reinforces the latter notion as archaeologists have uncovered a massive Norse hall dating back to 1,100 years ago. Given the structure’s design and location, researchers believe that the Medieval stone structure may have been a drinking hall meant for the leisurely gatherings of the Viking elite.

Want to keep your sexual proclivities secret? You may want to think twice before downloading any app.

An app designed to facilitate group sex meetups between strangers has left the sensitive information of its 1.5 million users easily accessible, in what experts say is ‘probably the worst security for any dating app we’ve ever seen.’

In an alarming new report, the team at Pen Test Partners says the service 3fun exposes everything from near-real time locations and sexual orientations to pictures uploaded by its users – even if they’re set to private.

With personal information such as birthdays, gender, and geographic coordinates available, the researchers say it’s ‘fairly easy’ to work out exactly who and where a specific user is.

Lower case intentional. morons on vacation.

When you’re a native watching a tourist be annoyingly so… touristy, it can be slightly amusing to say the least. It can seem like tourists never know where they’re going, or what they’re doing, or who they even are half the time. And sometimes, they push their curiosity too far, making a mess considerably beyond repair.

These tourists took their clumsy inquisitiveness as far as they possibly could, essentially making their mark on history in the most destructive ways possible. They say curiosity killed the cat, but it can apparently get tourists into some seriously awkward spots as well.

Highly agitated. Posthumous Genius Award Winner.

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a Greyhound Bus passenger got naked, demanded to be let off the moving bus and ran into oncoming highway traffic where he was hit and killed.

Police Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller said in a news release that the “extremely agitated” man began taking off his clothes on a Greyhound Bus on Thursday night. He then struck the front windshield, causing it to crack, while demanding to be let off the bus.

The release says the bus driver pulled over and the man exited. He ran into oncoming traffic and was fatally hit by another vehicle.

The man died at the scene. The other driver wasn’t injured.

94 I'm not sure why people dislike tourists. They actually think highly enough of where you live to want to spend time there and as such are generally more amenable than the locals that bitch and moan all the time.

One of my favorite bartending gigs I ever had a was at a hotel. It was a pretty cool bar, the manager would get live rock bands in every weekend and it attracted its fair share of cougars. I used to call it the Menopause Lounge or the Grab-a-Granny. Those older women used to tip the shit out of me with their ex-husbands alimony payments!

In any event, we always had quite a few tourists staying at the hotel and I truly enjoyed turning them on to the hidden gem restaurants and quirky fun things to do in town. They'd always stop back in for a nightcap and thank me with a handsome tip.

113 There are mediums that reward originality, but movies is not one of them. With television, they seem to do best by putting an original premise on a setting that we know really well. Most shows are going to only have two seasons at best, and a very few will get about 6 like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

Anime like Attack on Titan and Iron Fortress take the zombie idea in a strange direction and do an excellent job of it. I point out that the medium rewards originality despite usually being very heavy with tropes. A new show called Demon Hunter does nothing new but is very likable melodrama.

117 MCC was audited last year. Doc is at bop dot gov website (for now.) It's eighty something pages:

Dedicated on July 1, 1975, MCC New York is a unique facility with varied missions. Although primarily
responsible for housing inmates for the United States Marshals Service, it is the other facets of its
operation which give MCC New York its character. MCC New York is a complicated operation within
the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a variety of reasons. The facility structure has a total of ten single
housing units of multiple occupancy cells and one open bay/dormitory unit. It houses nearly 375
separation cases with approximately 225 of these having at least one separatee also housed at the
same facility. In many instances, inmates have separations orders from other inmates in every unit. In
fact, because of its ability to keep inmates separated from one another, MCC New York has been
known to house gang members affiliated with approximately thirty different gangs.

A corrections officer has
come forward to explain that a subject as notorious as Epstein and who
has "tried" to commit suicide would, per protocol, be wearing whats
called a pickle suit which cannot be used in any way to hang oneself, he
would have also been in a cell that would have made it impossible to
commit suicide.

He would have also been under 24/7 CCTV observation, apparently this camera/recording system "failied," and a guard would have checked up on him every 30 minutes.

This was Deep State doing what the Deep State does.

This is so chilling, scary and completely intolerable.

140 If anyone thinks that the Hunt movie would have been sympathetic to "deplorables" they are crazy. One only needs to look at the plot setup to Predators. Who was chosen to be hunted? A serial killer, a yakuza, a death row inmate, a war crimes guy from Africa, etc.

These deplorable people could be hunted without the audience having to feel too much sympathy for as they got knocked off. The "deplorables" in the Hunt film would have been made to look like evil rednecks, Nazis, KKK members who would not be sympathetic characters.

My guess is the hero would be one of the hunters who feels remorse for one of the hunted who repents for his sins. Hollywood would never allow the "deplorables" to be seen as average American flyover country people who are sympathetic.

Ms. Collins' memory of her Trek experience seems hazy, however. In her 1985 autobiography, Past Imperfect (p. 24 she makes a few errors regarding the episode: for example, in addition to the common mistake of referring to Mr. Spock as Dr. Spock, she identifies her character as Edith Cleaver instead of Edith Keeler, and she also claims that Spock, not Kirk, allowed her character to be killed - a plot point that was not in the version of the script that was actually shot. Most significantly, she claims Edith tried to "prove to the world that Hitler was a nice guy."

I don't believe there's a "fashion aspect" to that. It's just being one of those People Of Walmart chicks who simply won't admit she needs to buy some new jeans in a new size and keeps trying to shoving her now size 16 butt into her old size 8 jeans.

190 Epstein would have survived longer in a Nazi concentration camp, than he did in the Federal Marshals' favorite prison.

The most famous prisoner in the USA did not have even one $50 video cam pointed in his cell.

I don't know who did this. I only know I didn't kill him. I will not rule out anybody else but myself. We'll never know who did it for sure. Even when somebody is "caught," it will be a patsy.

224 Health Update -- Saw my blood oncologist yesterday. The original diagnosis was that I had what's called Lightchain disease, an autoimmune disease that kills your kidneys and frequently ends up with bone marrow cancer.

Well, after observing me for the last three years, the oncologist has changed his mind. He said that the cart got placed in front of the horse. Instead of Lightchain gumming up my kidneys with Kappa and Lambda molecules, the breakdown of my kidneys caused the explosion in the number of Kappa and Lambda molecules. My kidneys are still shot to hell, but the chance of cancer has gone down significantly. He still wants to see me once a year just to make sure, but he's fairly certain the Lightchain diagnosis was wrong. Believe me, that is quite a relief, not having to worry about cancer.

228 This morning, shortly after the wife and I finished goat and chicken chores, there was a knock on our door. Much to our surprise it was a couple of our newest Americans and their young boy. They were wanting a chicken (I have lots and lots of chickens) so yes, no problem. I get my shoes, a net, and a box, go outside and all off a sudden their are more children and another young lady. Well, the chicken catching was a big fail, my chickens aren't friendly, so the run away from people. I'm trying to tell the guy if he can come back this evening I could catch a spare rooster later today. Much to their surprise my very white wife explained it to them in Spanish. Anyways, they did eventually show up this evening with even more kids, a few extra young adult women, and the one adult male. They were very clean and polite, well dressed, the young ladies in more traditional garb. Mennonites do a lot of missionary work in Central America, I'm guessing they came in that way. Newer SUVs, too. Very odd, other than the Spanish, rather than German, I would have thought I was dealing with Mennonite or Amish. They were trying to have the young boy about 4 or 5 handle the transaction.

276 I actually asked the lady at the register how many of those they sold ($2000 Macallan- they had multiple bottles.) She said she had never heard of one selling in they year she had worked there. The most expensive bottle she had sold personally was a $400 bottle of somethingorother. She said they held bourbon auctions there occasionally (this is Lexington, KY) and bottles there went for over $1000. My bet is on those Pappy guys.

I'm jealous. We used to have a little hole-in-the-wall blues club down here called the Junkyard. If there was a national act close by, they'd usually pick up a gig there. I might shake my head now, but when I was a freshman at IU, Purdue was looked at much the same. This was the later days of Bobby Knight, and there was something different to that game. 16th row off the floor, right behind the band.

Glenn Robinson was playing for Purdue and they had a strong team, but this was a home game at Assembly Hall. It was a back and forth game, and Coach Knight, of course was taking issue with some of the calls the refs were making.

Finally the refs called a traveling or a charging foul on Robinson. Coach Knight jumped up and threw his hands in the air, and the entire place erupted. It was insane. Went on for a while.

I can completely believe the idea of a crowd getting worked up.

I probably could, and would have if I had not ordered the replacement parts already, if for no other reason than to check to see if the fan still works. The resistor wiring was cooked and fragile so it might have just been that. I have verified the power is getting to the plug, so there is that.

What is the function of the fan resistor? To provide a slower fan speed? I am used to one-speed cooling fans, with a thermal switch, and a relay.

Seems to me it would be worthwhile to have a means of forcing the fan to run, should circumstances dictate it.

433 What is the function of the fan resistor? To provide
a slower fan speed? I am used to one-speed cooling fans, with a thermal
switch, and a relay.

Seems to me it would be worthwhile to have a means of forcing the fan to run, should circumstances dictate it.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 11, 2019 01:05 AM (abNpZ)

Yes, apparently. Instead of having two fans, one for AC and one for regular cooling it just has the one fan with a resistor to provide two speeds, low speed for cooling and high speed for cooling with the AC on. It really would be nice to have a forced on mode, perhaps a pigtail with only two wires coming directly from the cooling fan relay instead of the three wires going into the resistor. Perhaps I will take the old resistor and make something along those lines.

Agree 100%. For your heater blower, it doesn't matter as much. Smaller motor, for one. On cold days, the heat is welcome (and the resistor is typical placed in the air plenum), and if using A/C, the tiny amount of heat is unnoticed, anyway. But engine cooling fans typically use pretty husky motors, and you will have to sink serious watts into a resistor to low them down.

A brushless DC motor with variable speed would be the go-to, now, I think.

498 For WWII POW camp topic, check out the video on UToob about Concordia, Kansas. Very interesting story.

There was a small camp in the middle of what is now wine country north of the SF Bay [Windsor]. Like most POWs, they worked at agricultural labor.

Two of them [German] disappeared from the camp one day, causing a minor panic in the area [even though relations had been fine between prisoners, farmers, and community]. The sheriff found them at a beach on the coast - they had no intention of "escape", but really wanted to see the Pacific Ocean. Mission accomplished.

Being a German POW in the US in WWII - pretty good duty.

Lemme tell you a little tale of the engineering marvel that was the Morris Garage automobile manufacturing co. The car had a temp gauge / sending unit combo that was about the size of the end joint of your thumb and was held in place in a engine facing hole near the top of the radiator by a rubber grommet.

After a period of a few years time and heating and cooling cycles the grommet lost it's grip so to speak and when the temp went up, the unit popped out. Mind you it didn't fall all the way out, rather it popped out maybe half - three quarters way, hence no coolant leak, and bumped into something (I forget exactly what) that also got quite hot and caused the insulation on the wires running to the fan motors to melt, producing wire to metal contact.
Naturally this caused a short. Now since when the temp went back down the resultant pressure reduction pulled the unit back into the radiator unless one were to examine the unit and it's wiring closely nothing would look wrong. So when I would take a look see I didn't notice anything.

What was happening was that the car was shorting and jump starting itself, which since this wouldn't happen till the car was warmed up and running it just seemed like it was missing / running kinda rough. It had been doing this for a couple of days and I was going to do the usual tune-up things on the coming weekend. It wasn't until I was driving home down a somewhat rural but pretty well patrolled state highway late one evening that the cause of the poor performance being electrical became apparent as my headlights were blinking on and off at roughly 1 second intervals for the roughly 20 minute drive from my girlfriend's place back to mine.
As I drove past the known LEO hiding spots I was both praying that the cops were elsewhere and saying thanks that I hadn't partaken (much) of any of the goodies going around the room earlier.

Now I did at least recognize that it didn't happen till the car was warmed up and the next day I stood there and watched it as it ran and warmed up and finally happened to spot the offending unit pop out of place as a little steam leaked around it and the missing started. I had my Aha! moment, wrapped some electrical tape around the wires and jerry rigged something to keep the unit in place, and drove two towns away to the Jaguar dealer where I was able to get the part that couldn't have cost more than a buck or two but which had been making me pull my hair out for a couple of days and but for the grace of G-d would have engendered quite the interesting conversation with Johnny LEO the previous night.
Some other night I'll tell you about the trunk light always on short (how do you know the fridge light goes out when you close the door?) and how I got really good at parking facing downhill and push starting the little beastie.
Yes, I truly know why the English drink warm beer!

543 Mike Hammer, if you are still here, I was working on my soon-to-be -ex Echo weed whacker today, and it had one of those crazy Zama carburetors, like you have on your McCullogh saw. This thing looked like the love child of an SU carb, and a toilet ballcock.

Put new diaphragms in it, and new hoses in the tank. Could not get it to run at more than about quarter speed, and it made no power at all. Drilled out the plug to access the mixture adjusting screw. Virtually worthless. Checked the muffler, discarded the spark arrestor screen, no blockage. Still ran like shit. Pulled the Zama carb off it, installed another type of carb off my old Ryobi trimmer.

Same Damned.Thing. Ran maybe half-speed, sounded choked, and a lot of fuel stand-off from the carb throat. I got so pissed off with it, I threw it in the burn barrel, and melted it down into slag.

A book needs to be written of all the German WWII POWs, who either contrived to remain in the USA after the war, or who finagled their way back, by whatever means, after they were repatriated to Germany in the post-war era.

It was NOT a small number of them.

That's how sweet life in the USA was, then.

Even PRISONERS OF WAR preferred it here in comparison to the motherland they had served.

Friend of mine had, maybe still has, a TR7 roadster. The 5-speed transmission, evidently sourced from Rover, burned up because the tiny little fiber gears that made an oil pump for circulating lube oil got stripped. Everyone else in the civilized world manages to make manual transmissions that get adequately lubricated by splash, but no, Rover had to be "smarter than that".

A new transmission was going to cost $2000. A low miler, used RX-7 engine, imported from Japan was about $800. So we did a swap. Would you believe that every electrical device on the new engine was compatible with the lights and devices in the car? Mazda rad had a "low coolant" sensor. It plugged right into the "low coolant" lamp in the TR7 dash. Ditto with the "low oil" lamp. How many other cars with piston engines, back in the mid '70's, were ever equipped with even one of those lights? The tach worked properly, too. I am convinced that Triumph had intended the TR& to have a rotary engine, sourced from Mazda, but something queered the deal.

The only tough thing about the engine swap was the Mazda thermal reactor would not play nice with some chassis part. So we eliminated it, and used tube headers instead. Darn thing sounded like twin chainsaws racing uphill, and the headers glowed red after a run. But they never failed.

It really changed the character of the car. Could not drive it without getting a big grin on my face.

562 I was just looking. Some outfit called Unicomp acquired the rights to make the IBM Model M style keyboards with the buckling spring. About $100 from Amazon.

I may just get one.

You know,it should be possible to use an arrangement of magnets to get that snap action to the keys, with no physical contact, or springs to wear out. Opposing magnets, maybe.

565 I recall seeing at some Provincial park, a large enclosed sled that German POW's were planning on using to make an escape from a Canadian POW camp.

Where the hell they were going to go, beats me.

I vaguely recall reading about some German POW's who hatched a plan to escape to Mexico, which probably would have interned them. I don't think they comprehended just how big the continent is.

I am wearily enraged by the Epstein thing. Were I Barr I'd start it by walking into the Warden's office and shooting him between the eyes to show the rest that I mean business.

Then break out the cattle prods.
Posted by: Vlad the implaer, whittling away like mad

=======

And good evening.

Where does one begin?

So Barr is one of the Guys Who Golfs -- similar to the Ladies Who Lunch. He associates with attorneys and well-intentioned, hightoned individuals who, we hesitate to note, could easily deliver a guest lecture on a cruise.

Why the FUCK didn't he know what we all know? That ANY federal bureau, yes, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, is a flesh-eating-bacteria-infested SWAMP that he should have waded into and ORDERED to see to it that this particular prisoner was watched and preserved like the embryo of Jesus Lord Christ?

What, he figured he could shamble through the foyer of the Whatever-Building making a note of Epstein's incarceration and mutter "Yez, mmm, welldun" and leave it at that? Our unioninzed, affirmative-actionized federal civil service was good enough for him?

Well, fuck him and the Andy McCarthy he rode in on. I hope his shock at What Lies Beneath is equal to his pain as he realizes he should have known all along.

Why yes I've been to a wine tasting and I'm chasing it at home with a beer, why do you ask?

575 I think Pinin Farina had a hand in the design of the MGB. He certainly did with other cars of the British Motor Corp. Those Gothic-arch tail lights are one of his signature features.

Note the tail light similarity to MGB tail lights, and in fact, the whole "crisp" styling, as opposed to the earlier flowing styling.

I was just looking at the history of the IBM keyboards. The Model F was even better than the Model M. Those are very hard to come by, but there is some project to recreate them -- they will be very pricey, $400 or more.

They were all over Vancouver in the 50's to the early '70's. Thousands of them. And then they all just vanished. Morris Minors were incredibly solid, structurally. And not badly prone to rust, either. Just very gutless, and noisy transmissions, too.

602 All this talk about MG's. A lady friend in CA had an MG Midget convertible that was old and burned oil real bad. She got pulled over by the CA smog patrol and issued a ticket. Her boyfriend rebuilt the engine and me and him sanded it down and repainted it with multiple coats of red lacquer. It was beautiful and ran like a Swiss watch.

One day she loaned it to a friend of hers to go somewhere, the friend wrecked it and totaled it. It was sickening. All that work for nothing.
