Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 07-20-2019

WIM Jennifer Shahade 02.jpg
WIM Jennifer Shahade

Pic Note

Yes, I know this is a repeat chess babe, but I finally found a photo of Ms. Shahade I really like. But don't worry, there are lots of other chess babes you'll be seeing here in the weeks ahead. In fact, every time I go looking, I always seem to find new chess babes I've never heard of. I think they're breeding them faster than I can show them.

Moviegique will be around later with his latest movie review. And as always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (1018 )

Goal: Find the forced mate in 4
Hint: Black is threatening mate in two, so White had better act accordingly.

I guess today is International Chess Day. I'm not sure how we should be celebrating International Chess Day, but it did give me an excuse to show another chess babe. Maybe there should be an International Chess Babe Day.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (963)

The walls are closing in on Black. What is the most efficient way for White to FINISH HIM and what is Black's best line of defense?

Goal: Some lines result in a quick mate, but one allows Black to draw it out some
Hint: Beware, Black is within a hair's breadth of counterattacking on the back rank.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190720 - Problem 1.jpg
R7/1ppk2p1/4r2p/1P3Q2/4P3/1nppq3/6PP/7K w - - 0 1

1.Qd5+ Ke7

Not 1...Rd6 because 2.Qf7#

2.Qd8+ Kf7
3.Qf8+ Kg6
4.Qf5#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190720 - Problem 2.jpg
3q2k1/1R3b2/3p1bN1/2p2Q2/8/6P1/5P1P/6K1 w - - 0 1

1.Nh8!

1...Bxh8 leads to the immediate 2.Qxf7#

1...Ba2 or anywhere else allows the rook and queen to link up on the seventh rank: 2.Qh7+ Kf8 3.Rf7+ Bxf7 (3...Ke8 4.Qg8#) 4.Qxf7#.

1...Qe8 is probably the best first move for Black.

With this moves, Black threateans a counterattack starting with Qe1+, hoping for some sort of perpetual check, or maybe more, if he can bring his bishops into play.

2. Rxf7 Qxf7
3. Nxf7 Kxf7
4. Qd7+ Kg8

If Black tries to hold onto everything with 4...Be7, then White just brings his king up, Kg2-f3-e4 etc. White can now simplify to a won endgame:

5. Qxd6 Bd4
6. Kf1 Kf7
7. f4 Ke8
8. Ke2 Bg1
9. h3 Bd4
10. Kd3 Bg1
11. Kc4 Kf7
12. Qxc5 Bxc5
13. Kxc5 and wins.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

11 the BBC asks: why are games which trick marks suckers gamers into paying thousands of pounds on microtransactions, billed as suitable for children?
bbc.com/news/technology-48925623

Back in the day, child-friendly bands like the New Kids On The Block and The Bangles set up pay-phone lines which stupid kids called, costing their parents thousands. (The Bangles at least canceled their line pretty soon after setting it up, to their credit.) A lot of sex lines did this too - of course, these weren't for kids, but horny teenagers stole their parents' credit cards.

Why are game developers allowed to do this?

======

It's insane. A friend of mine set up X-box or whatever for her kids, and unbeknownst to her, these pop-ups come up in various games asking something like "Do you want to enhance your powers?" or "Do you want to buy extra fuel?" and a YES is an instant transaction against the (credit card!!!!) account that was necessary to set up X-box to begin with. These might have even been default settings, where the parent has to actively turn OFF these transactions. Her two little kids had no idea what they were doing, so of course they're buying shyt left and right, and she didn't realize it until her credit card bill came in. She managed to call whomever and get out of it, but I bet she was lucky.

Sterling has gotten me to not ever watch his videos after his non sequitur rants about capitalism.

As far as Fallout 76 and Anthem, they were both hyped games from beloved developers that were undercooked and shoved out in front of people. No Man's Sky was an over-promised pile of crap from a first time developer. You get burned on one of those you just write the guy off.

Bioware and Bethesda are used to actually having some heft and favor with people- of course they have to respond. That they have done so pretty fumble fingered kind of shows why they are not quite so beloved now.

On move if the Q moves anywhere else then white has the same moves and if black does not move the Q (say, to attack the white Q) then Rxd8+ saves his Q.

Better for black:

1. Rd7 Bxg6
2. Rxd8+ Bxd8
3. Qxg6+

and white has Q vs B which is an easy win.

But I gotta think that for some of the new members, it's gotten personal.

135 I don't know much about the A$AP Rocky case in Sweden that Trump is becoming embroiled in, but this sounds par for the course. Europeans are always brutal on (non-muslim) foreigners who are suspected of crimes. In America hating Western Europe, it's going to be especially bad. But even in Eastern Europe, they're still gonna fuck with you.

For an analog, in 2010, Randy Blyth of Lamb of God killed a fan at a show in CZ. The drunk guy had rushed the stage and attacked him, Blyth kicked him, he fell off the stage, and he died.

Blyth came back to the states, the Czechs asked us to pursue the case, and we declined because it was on video, and it was obviously self-defense.

Three years later, Lamb of God played another show in CZ. They immediately arrested Blyth, held him for five weeks as they investigated, and then released him because it was self-defense.

This is just the way Euros do this.

Depends, really. Most of modern Europe was influenced by French designs. There was a period when the plain Dutch look was in which was also the Puritan look, and before that a lot of the look was Italianate.

But the French were inspired by places like Poland, and the Basques, which came out as odd things like the polonaise style dress and the Basque which were also changed when they came to America.

I wonder if the shirtwaist and dress is uniquely American. Which is a look I approve of.

I need to vent about Microsoft. I've just been cleaning up a royal mess. Windows 10 has this wonderful feature called "fast startup" or "hybrid shutdown". It's supposed to make a startup after a shutdown be fast.

And it's great if you're only running one OS, have a pretty vanilla setup AND AREN'T MULTIBOOTING! That got turned on on this system somehow. Maybe an update turned it back on.

Well, I needed to shutdown. Then I booted up a Linux install. Booted Windows 10 back up. Disk corruption. Hosed an install of Visual Studio 15.

You see, with "fast shutdown", it doesn't flush filesystem buffers and stuff. The disk can be in an inbetween state. If another system comes along and tries to touch that filesystem, well, shit happens. Bad shit.

And they just turn it on without telling you.

Visual Studio 15 is an amazingly complicated piece of software, depending on a bazillion components and is thus incredibly fragile and can break in half a dozen ways.

It has taken me all day to get it back to working.

I've got those. Community is free. 2019, version 16 is the current one.

VS 2017 and onwards aren't quite as fragile. They improved it, basically using private registry hive files for each installation.

Visual Studio 2015, v 14, puts so much crap in the registry, and depends on so many complicated paths therein that it's a nightmare.

"Unidstall" doesn't. It doesn't come anywhere near removing everything. A clean install of Windows is the only remedy sometimes. Just start over.

What saved me was a tool someone wrote that would clean everything out. Or try to. I had to run it twice, but it worked and a reinstall worked. I thought I was going to have to reinstall this whole installation, but that tool saved me.

167 VS 2017 and onwards aren't quite as fragile

We Microsoft grognards learnt long ago never to install ".0" of anything from them.

"Windows Seven!!" was actually 6.1 if you look at dxdiag - it was the fix to Vista. Likewise, 8.1 was the actual usable version of Windows Eight.

So I was hoping 16.1 of Visual Studio wouldn't rape me in the butt too bad.

Windows (NT) version history. The NT kernel based line took over after the last Win9x/DOS based thing.

NT Workstation 4.0 was the last NT branded thing. Windows 2000 was NT 5.0. It was supposed to take over the "consumer" line, but it wasn't quite ready.

XP, which is NT 5.1, did that. Windows 2003 Server and the XP x64 versions were NT 5.2

Vista, a major change was NT 6.0. Windows 7 was NT 6.1. Windows 8 was 6.2 and 8.1 was 6.3. The later Server versions tracked those version numbers as well.

Well, with Windows 10, they changed the internal, "real" version to match the 10. Nothing but marketing crap.

NT started at version 3.1 for marketing purposes as well. so 3 = 1, and subtract two from the real version number.

235 From Wikipedia:

Tang is an artificially flavored drink mix that was formulated by General Foods Corporation food scientist William A. Mitchell[1] in 1957, and first marketed in powdered form in 1959.[2][3] The Tang brand is currently owned by Mondelez International, a 2012 North American company split off of Kraft Foods Inc.

Sales of Tang were poor until NASA used it on John Glenn's Mercury flight in February 1962,[4] and on subsequent Gemini missions.[5] Since then it has been closely associated with the U.S. manned spaceflight program, and created the misconception that Tang was invented for the space program.[6][7]

Tang was used by early NASA manned space flights.[8] In 1962, when Mercury astronaut John Glenn conducted eating experiments in orbit, Tang was selected for the menu;[2] it was also used during some Gemini flights, and has also been carried aboard numerous space shuttle missions. Although many soda companies sent specially-designed canned drinks into space with the crew of STS-51-F, the crew preferred to use Tang, as it could be mixed into existing water containers easily. In 2013, former NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin said "Tang sucks."[9]

It was carried in a "folded up like NASA Origami in a side-compartment of the Lunar Lander Descent Stage.

The astronauts would unfold the bits n' pieces, which would either self-lock into position with spring powered press pins, or be locked into position with various tightening collars, collets, clamps and other fasteners.

Those tires? No compressed gas in them at all. If you had a compressed air source, you could run air right through them.

They were spring-steel mesh, strong enough to act as an inflated rubber tire, but far lighter.

This is all stuff I remember from my schoolboy days, soaking up every detail of NASA I could possibly find.

But I'm certain you could Wikipedia "Lunar Rover" and get a flood of details there, too.

I remember going out and yelling at them to quit screwing around and GET IN HERE AND WATCH THIS because THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! My parents were amused that I was so dogmatic.

351 349 295 I have no recollection of watching the first moon landing, certainly was old enough but no idea what I was doing.

Posted by: Skip at July 20, 2019 07:12 PM

If you were watching the BBC feed of the moon landing, do you know what you got to hear?

Pink f*king Floyd live in the BBC studios! They were providing musical accompaniment for what they were showing on screen.

352 Lol. Paquio. 40 years old. Hope he's in shape.
Posted by: Cannibal Bob at July 20, 2019 07:45 PM (l0HIT)

Pacquiao is good people but the fight game is a young man's sport.

Maybe he's got enough in the tank for one more big win.

Good luck Manny!

Wasn't she in the express line with a whole bunch of groceries?/ Those people can be an irritation. although I've never shouted at them. He was probably annoyed by that.

359 January Jones is a lovely lady, but her character in Mad Men was awful, and it's largely her that made give on that show.

Such fun.

365 342 326 What if Black plays Qa8 as his first move?

Posted by: rickl at July 20, 2019 07:33 PM (sdi6R)

Something like:

2.Rxf7 Bg7
3.Ng6 Qa1+
4.Kg2 Qa8+
5.Kh3 Qc8
6.Ne7+ Kh8
7.Qxc8+ Kh7
8.Qg4 Kh6
9.Qh4#

...or so my chess app tells me.

Posted by: OregonMuse. AoSHQ Thought Leader & Pants Monitor at July 20, 2019 07:43 PM (o9nSg)

I was looking too, and my chess app had Qd8 as the fifth move. At which point I thought, shit, I'm a rook ahead, why not trade queens? So I played Qd7 and it was an easy win for White after that.

370 On one of the last Apollo missions they had a live TV camera set up pointing at the LEM. They calculated how fast it would have to pan upwards to track the ascent stage, and how early they would have to send the signal from Earth to allow for the speed of light delay getting to the Moon.

Anyway, they nailed it and it was really cool watching the ascent stage blast off from the base that was the descent stage. The acceleration in 1/6 gravity was amazing and it was out of sight in seconds! No smoke or flames of course.

371 Wooohoo! I correctly worked out both problems for once! I mean, I didn't work all the way through every line on the second one, but it became obvious that Nh8 resulted in a material advantage that, with correct play, lead inevitably to a white victory.
