363 Look, and I'm not trying to be mean, but most people on welfare truly believe they earned it, that they are owed it. It's simple: When you're getting money that came out of someone else's pocket--you can come up with all sorts of justifications as to why it's fair. "

By the time I an eligible for SS I will have paid somewhere in the $600K ballpark into the system. So yeah my justification why I want something back is because I CONTRBUTED OVER HALF A MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS. And please don't insult me by calling me a welfare leach for fuck's sake.

23 It's night, yet a bright light is shining on him. There's even a lantern at his feet but it doesn't match the beam that illuminates him and casts shadows.

Is that metaphoric for the light of God endowing him with insight? He's also holding a compass which is sometimes associated with the Creator. But he's just a guy who figured stuff out.

I'll give it the it might be better in person benefit of the doubt. I hate that the figure is smack dab in the middle and he's not particularly well rendered. The rest of it has the turn of the last century feel of an illustration for a book, as by Pyle or Wyeth.

46 Like the painting by this artist last week (?), I like the attention to detail in the background, such as the figure of the wooden railing and floor, and the various items strewn about. The sky color is especially eye-catching and sets off the clothing effectively.

This is another work that strikes me as an illustration. That doesn't make it lesser art, Jakobides' talent is obvious, but it seems like it belongs to a story more than a stand alone piece.

You aren't a welfare leech.

What's clouding things is the sales pitch that you are "contributing." You've been told this, that's how it's sold, and it's very much wrong. You are being taxed. That tax money is distributed to other people. When you become eligible, other people are taxed to pay money to you.

The money was taken from you - you didn't contribute and it's very misleading for the government to say that.

Yes, it sucks, and it sucks by design.

73 Jeremy Corbyn has hired, as one of his top advisers, a man who has written extensively about how Josef Stalin was one of the Greatest Leaders of the 20th Century, and how modern political parties should model themselves on his beliefs.

Seriously, that is the kind of thing that Corbyn believes.

Boris is no savior. But May represented what you get when you just pull the average middle aged twit off the street and make her Prime Minister. Farage could be great (actually he has a history of getting into very destructive fights with all of his allies, who all end up ex-allies) plus, EVERYONE in Parliament hates Farage. I suspect, just from circumstantial evidence, that everyone who's ever spent any personal time with Farage hates Farage.

So, poor Great Britain - an entire country and not one single leader worth having the job.

The Ring is a very good easy-to-set-up system. My concerns had to do with privacy...the videos are not stored locally and there's no way to get them to be stored locally. It's an Amazon-owned company as well.

I had an older system that did local recording and such, but for me to do a complete perimeter required a lot of wiring that I wasn't keen on doing. So I have Ring, which again works fine and I do like that I can get alerts and a live feed on my phone, but I keep going back to the privacy thing.

I'm about to buy another just for the four cameras since the base is an 8 channel set.

*******

They work well for my purposes, which is to monitor the status of our battery system at the cabin from a remote location. They might be used as a video surveillance system for security, or at least for after-the-fact documentation. (Identifying a home intruder or catching your dog counter surfing). I don't think there's a limit to number of cameras. Free two week storage of motion activated video clips (which you can download to your own device for long term storage). Additional storage capacity can be purchased, which I think is their main revenue model. Alerts can be set to go to your cell phone. Has a night vision capability.

Yep. Worked for a company in LA that wanted me to transfer there. After spending four months in LA I made other plans. This was the late 80s. Grew up in NOVA and I hardly recognize the place. I remember fly fishing in the Shenandoah about twenty years ago and noticed a lot of Hispanics with cowboy boots just hanging around the downtowns of Valley towns. That was a clue.

Posted by: Lurking Lurker

.............

That is impossible to pay that much into SS.

Each year you can pay a maximum of 6.2% of $128,000

That is $7,900 per year.

If you paid that into SS for 45 years. it would amount to $355,500.

I can almost guarantee you that you did NOT make $128,000 when you were 20 years old.

So your figure for how much you will have contributed is double or triple or even more if, like me, you made a pittance in your twenties.

And.. if you contribute the max you will be getting over $33,000 per year in SS payments. You will have used up ALL of your contributions in about 10-12 years.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at July 23, 2019 11:23 AM (so+oy)

Posted by: Lurking Lurker at July 23, 2019 09:48 AM (FiUMj)

Just wondering if the 600k includes the employer's SS "contribution". The employer sees both sides (yours and his) as the cost of employing you.

100% true. Had a good friend that was a smoker but used to "quit" regularly. They rolled tobacco generally, but whenever they had even a single pack of regular cigs (smoking at same pace) it made them insanely crazy when they stopped.

They also had to have one every 20 minutes like clockwork whereas the regular tobacco didn't call to them on a clock.
