The Occasional Fishing Thread: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay Edition [Bandersnatch]

Welcome Piscators and Piscatrixes to the current installment of the occasional fishing thread. As usual, my musings, memories, biases, rants, brags, and outright lies are just a jumping off point. All things fishy are on topic.

7-13-001.jpg

There are as many satisfactions to fishing as there are people who commit the act. It can be an endeavor of rugged adventure. There are guys who fish Montauk in wetsuits, swimming out to rocks with surf rods. I like to walk miles through surf before dawn with a flyrod. I used to bristle when people said “oh that must be so relaxing”, but I’m over that. There’s also something to just being on the water staring at a bobber and hoping nothing moves it. There is nothing like the presence of water to help you contemplate the universe.

So, for this week’s jumping off point, do you like the active or the passive of fishing?

Some people wait until after the outing to enjoy the beer.

7-13-002.jpg

I’ve been trying to think of a way for this next one to fit smoothly into the arc of a thread but I’ve given up and am just shoehorning it in:

7-13-003.jpg

That is Joan Salvato Wulff. Her grace led to her winning flycasting competitions (that was a thing) and being a competitive dancer and dance instructor. She would marry one of the pioneers of American fly fishing, Lee Wulff. I have a vague family connection with her. Her father ran a rod and gun shop where my grandfather hung out. My mother would tell me stories of her when I was growing up. So I reached out to her and was delighted to get a reply. She assured me that, at age 91, she had absolutely no recollection of my mother.

Now on to the Fish Brag Pics…

Grimaldi may have sent the most Horde-ish fish brag pic evah:

7-13-004.jpg

Last week's fishing thread motivated me to go catch a big carp as a contribution...but no luck. Other anglers in the area said the area was full of carp swimming up to shore right after sunset, so I dug out my fishing bow (which I've rarely shot and never hit anything with) and took a chance Thursday evening. Plenty of carp I missed, but I did manage to hit...a buffalo.

It'll be frozen and donated to Save Our Avian Resources (SOAR), a group that rehabilitates injured raptors (sadly, not the dinosaur-type). https://soarraptors.org/

I believe there is still a rifle fishing season in Vermont.

Lurker John re-contributes:

We caught these last weekend. Wife is holding a 19”er and Brother is holding a 21”er.

George has wandered down Memory Lane:

7-13-007.JPG

This is one of those very rare pictures where I was NOT the person taking it. Me, two bro-in-laws and my cousin’s boat in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola.
Early 90’s because I remember the Black Winston Racing hat and the Red Snapper I’m holding.
The damn thing wore me out but it was tremendous fun as evidenced by my ear to ear grin.

Yes, I was lean and mean and an honest to God badass back in the day.
Now I’m just old and wondering which body part is going to say ‘hold my beer and watch me fuck with him’ next.

Sic transit juventus.

GMan brings it:

7-13-008.jpg

7-13-009 (2).jpg

These are a bit older. The first one is of a muskie I caught up near green bay, WI (while fishing for smallmouth bass). Not the biggest muskie, but beautiful.
The second is a rainbow trout I caught while fishing the kenai river in alaska. That one measured something like 19 inches.

Emil offers:

Newly weds fly fishing

Awwww. Young love.

And with that we move on to the raison d’etre of this here HQ, the comments section. Brickbats, praise, and fish brag pics are welcome at aoshqfish at sign gmail thing.

13 "I believe there is still a rifle fishing season in Vermont."

After I shot that fish, a butch lesbian fishing nearby took out a high powered air pistol and took a few shots at the carp. As she stood by the water searching for targets, a DNR ranger drove past on the road, and the redneck guys along the shore waved so he didn't notice anything was amiss.

Good times.

15 Has anyone tried tenkara fishing? From the outside looking in, it seems like fly fishing with all the fiddly stuff taken out of it. I guess if the fiddly stuff is the whole point of fly fishing, it might not be your thing. It seems a little more approachable for beginners, at least as far as selecting equipment.

28 I've had exciting fishing with surf casting. Surprising fishing taking small bass and pan fish from shallow pockets in the Potomac River with Colorado spinners.

But the most pleasant fishing was sitting by the seawall on St. Pete Beach with a medium saltwater spinning rig, a few small plugs and a bucket of grass shrimp. It was never crowded. Sometimes the only company was a pelican smart enough to let others get his dinner. You never knew what might hit the hook: Sheepshead, snappers, ladyfish, sea trout, and something locally called a dog fish which was REALLY ugly. It was the equivalent of the guy in the photo above.

I surf fish on the Gulf Coast occasionally and there are big, beautiful crested sea birds (heron-ish) that will choose a fisherman and hang out with him for hours.

They know that new bait is frequently applied and the old bait is always discarded.

37 Somewhere..and who knows where that is.. I have pics of a group of us salmon fishing in Lake Michigan.. we had a guide, and it was good fishin'! Quite a haul that day and the guide cleans 'em and sends you home with the filets!
Many many years before that, I went fishing on Lake Michigan with my brother-in-law when he had a boat in Monroe Harbor.
We were 5 miles out when the wind and weather whipped up.. we were heading into the weather moving west.. my god.. the water was so choppy and we were moving so fast to try to get in, it was jarring hitting a wave every 3-4 seconds.. that was a long trip in!
My BIL introduced us to a easy way to cook the salmon when we got back to his house.. Clean it, stuff it with herbs and butter and spices, then triple wrap it and put it in a full cycle in the dish washer.. no soap!
Perfectly steamed!

A guy I met fishing wrote a book called "Reeling in Russia". He's a journalist and the hook was going to be that he'd travel across Russia and because it's so vast he was going to find unspoiled waters and unschooled fish all the way across.

What he found was mining tailings and leaking petroleum pipelines and basically no fish across 11 time zones.

86 pro tip, if you're into grilling/smoking/cooking skin on feesh filets on planks.

save a bunch of money, and go to the local Home Despot, Lowes, whatever or a generic lumber yard, and buy one or more raw cedar 6' fence planks.

measure the length of fillet/s, after rinsing with fresh, not tap water, patting dry and placing on a platter, skin down, into a thin slick of the cooking oil of your choice.

wild salmon needs teasing, not seasoning, so a tad of key lime juice or other to taste, then light dustings of whatever speaks to your taste buds.

then measure length of fillet/s. if small, top to bottom, you might be able to cook side by side on the plank.

cut off a length of fense plank as needed, rinse with fresh water after knocking off the saw dust.

when fire is ready, transfer feesh to plank, then place plank in cooker. direct, indirect and smoker all w*rk. direct cooks fastest, but is the easiest to over cook, and, at the price of fresh/wild, who wants that?

salmon is done when you start seeing opaque white dots on the filet surface. remove plank from fire.

you can serve from the plank, or transfer to a platter if you wanna be all that.

when done, throw skin the the local animals, and the used plank into the kindling pile for next winter.

unused cedar plank portions can go there too, or into closets to help keep moths out of mama's sweaters, when the fishing season is over.

you're welcome.

92 irongrampa mentioned how exciting it is to take fish on a top water lure. Gotta agree. I've had a few bass hit a spinner during the retrieve so it was both exciting and unexpected. 96 My game of choice is smallmouth bass, and I'm definitely in the "active" category. I have some (maybe peculiar) preferences: always use lures, never live bait; never fish from a boat; strongly prefer rivers streams to lakes and ponds. Some folks try to tell me I'm doing it wrong, but how can it be wrong to fish the way *I* want? It makes me happy.

186 Fresh water fish called stripers or white bass where I've been in Wisconsin.

There is a striped bass/white bass hybrid called wipers which are stocked in fresh waters. There are also actual striped bass (morone saxatilis) which are adapted to fresh water, but they're really a saltwater* fish.

*back in the 1200 baud days I tried to put "saltwater flyfishing" on my AOL profile and it said I couldn't use the letters t w a t in that order.

189 I"m glad I"m home. Every time there's a blackout in NYC, my first thought is terrorism.
Or imagine sitting in Madison Square Garden watching a concert and suddenly all the lights go out, wondering if it's the home version of Bataclan. Or in a completely darkened Times Square, which already has had several terrorist attack attempts. Or sitting in a dark subway car for an hour trying to get home from work.
I don't get the NYC hate some of the posters here have. It's Ace"s hometown, too.

For less than what??? I've been here since 2007. I've seen nothing remotely banworthy and I've got a damn good meter for this shit. Not my house though.

They are exactly the same.

Posted by: mikeyG at July 13, 2019 10:08 PM (bYyHA)

I didn't really say otherwise. But they haven't always been the same. NYC was built in large part by people who love this country.

204 I met a woman during a more recent blackout who was stuck on a subway for an hour with her baby in a stroller. She had to climb go a ladder with the stroller to get out. And 62,000 customers doesn't mean individuals, it means buildings, so it's hundreds of thousands of people.

It may not seem proportional that if some cities sneeze the rest of the country catches cold but TBH, NYC is a financial, entertainment and tourist center, too, so there are people all over the US who are worried about their relatives visiting or living in NYC.
Think about it. Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, Times Square, Lincoln Center, Broadway theaters - all those places suddenly dark. First thing a lot of people think of is where's the bomb or where's the shooter or is this a rehearsal for an attack. It's damned scary.

Posted by: vivi at July 13, 2019 10:21 PM (11H2y)

205 209 - there are plenty of people who voted for trump in NYC and even Manhattan. It's like being a Christian in Imperial Rome, but we're here. And we're native NY'ers for the most part, the old school New Yorkers.

209 Found two nice Garcia fishing poles w/ Mitchell reels along the shore of a lake pretty far up in Alberta, Canada - let them set there for four days. Saw not a soul other than my family in all that time. The lake was at the base of a very rugged looking mountain range. Incredibly beautiful and serene. That was 1968.

I used that rod/reel for 20 years.

Then one day I left it sitting on a dock at Lake Berryessa. I loved that thing. Never did care much for the later reels and poles. I tried to love them, but it never worked out between us.
