What an adorable portrait of a little girl playing 'grown-up'. It reminds me, in subject and approach, of the family oriented Scandi artists we've seen here.
Besides capturing the attitude and expression of the girl so well, his use of color for the skin tones and the light coming from the upper left is right on. The detail, both form and color, of the cane back of the chair really caught my eye. My grandparents had a chair like that and I immediately thought of it on seeing this painting. Thanks to CBD. This painting and others Georgios Jakobides did are delightful. Nice way to end the week. Posted by: JTB at July 19, 2019 10:21 AM (bmdz3) 208

165 CNN: Trump Supporters 'Fall In the Category of White Supremacy'
I just think about the folks - just the ones whose videos I've blogged - Diamond & Silk, Amazing Lucas, Brandon Tatum, those two Harris guys, whatzername Candace - who all have suspicious quantities of melanin under their white pointy hoods. Posted by: mindful webworker - click for cat pic at July 19, 2019 10:10 AM (LO5Qy) The real, significant thing about CNN's attack (and the left's of course) - is that they're not attacking Trump for "who he is" or even "what he does" - they are now openly attacking Trump because We support Him, and He supports Us. Of course, that's always been their only real complaint, and we always knew that, but like everything else, it's good to see all the cards on the table. The only reason the Left hates Trump is because they hate Us. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 19, 2019 10:23 AM (V2Yro) 217

He was a rare character actor of those days who could also headline a picture -- The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse and The Sea Wolf and The Woman in the Window were three examples. And is Omar's daddy [father-in-law???] also in the U.S. illegally and perhaps a war criminal?? See the sock link.
The Nur family was well connected in the country led by the Marxist regime. Young Omar went to kindergarten at age four, their family lived in a secure compound in Mogadishu. When the regime was overtaken, the family caught a plane to escape the country. The average GDP per capita in Somalia was only $187 dollars in 2010 twenty years after they fled the country when the regime fell. Obviously, Nur's family was a privileged family. 318 I guess Cats is a really well-done play and quite entertaining but the trailer makes the people look so weird and disturbing. They don't look like cats, they look like half-shaved rats or something. "
I saw cats on stage once, and I loved it! Mainly because I went because the wife wanted to, and we weren't far from the stage, and there was this one dancer who was on stage all the time even though she didn't have any songs, and she was in this skin tight cat suit and she was Very Impressively Built. And danced good too! Yeah that director knew what he was doing. Did I say that I really enjoyed Cats? Posted by: Tom Servo at July 19, 2019 10:52 AM (Kpl3J) 362

The second funniest thing about the SDNY case that got dropped is that all of the potentially damaging info came only from Michael Cohen, backed up nowhere else. Mueller decided to get an easy scalp by charging him with perjury, but oops - you can't make a case against anyone else when your only "witness" is s convicted perjurer.
And now Lanny Davis and Micheal Cohen are pissed, because they just figured out that all of Cohen's lying and scheming and double dealing was all for nothing, except for landing him in jail, and making him an entry in a future political trivia game. Key Largo is a crime movie that should be more exciting than it is. You've got Bogie, Bacall, Barrymore, Robinson in one of his patented gangster roles, Claire Trevor as a beautiful drunk, a hurricane bearing down on them . . . and somehow it can't measure up to Double Indemnity or White Heat or The Maltese Falcon for excitement and tension. Dunno why that is.
I have some dim memory as a kid of a serial in The Saturday Evening Post which featured a lot of these elements. But that would have been in the early Sixties, KL was long before, and I don't think KL was ever a novel. So, somewhere there is another novel, short story, or novelette from the days when the Post printed real fiction, dealing with criminals and a hurricane. Anybody have an idea what it could have been? The moment where Scar tells Simba to run. He sits there until Simba is just out of sight and then tells the hyenas to kill Simba. I mean...I hate the "Why didn't he just?" argument, but that moment is tailor made for it. Why didn't Scar just kill Simba right then and be done with it? Key Largo is a crime movie that should be more exciting than it is. You've got Bogie, Bacall, Barrymore, Robinson in one of his patented gangster roles, Claire Trevor as a beautiful drunk, a hurricane bearing down on them . . . and somehow it can't measure up to Double Indemnity or White Heat or The Maltese Falcon for excitement and tension.
Yeah, its a good movie with some great performances but at no point in the entire film is there any sense of tension or danger. Everyone deep down seems like they are friends Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 19, 2019 11:10 AM (39g3+) Posted by: JT at July 19, 2019 11:10 AM (arJlL) 442

I have some dim memory as a kid of a serial in The Saturday Evening Post which featured a lot of these elements. But that would have been in the early Sixties, KL was long before, and I don't think KL was ever a novel. You're being far too pedantic. In general, this is a device the writers and producers use to get you involved further in the plot. There are many reasons you can read into that part. One is that Scar always has someone doing his dirty work- and in the end that kills him. Don't forget that Scar also said he "wasn't there" as part of his alibi. Killing Simba himself would not work both for he aforementioned and also can complicates his attempt to keep His alibi intact. Posted by: Marcus T at July 19, 2019 11:14 AM (VkWRL) 468
Look I'm sure the new CGI Lion King is fine and great for kids and families and whatever but....it's the single most pointless of the Disney remakes.

Yet another flaw in our post-1965 immigration policies is that the imbalanced immigration flows has now racialized all debates about immigration policy/preferences.
"Send her back" is now supposedly the functional equivalent of hurling a racial epithet, but maybe people should read up on some of the insults hurled at Caribbean-born Alexander Hamilton to see that a preference for not being told how to run your own country by a non-native (even one that literally fought next to George Washington) is not particularly a racial thing. "The Hamburger Fremdenblatt was one of the most important daily newspapers of the 19th and early 20th century in Hamburg. The newspaper was originally published in 1828 list of arriving strangers in Hamburg and appeared from September 24, 1864 Hamburg Hamburger stranger sheet . It came in 1907 in the possession of the publisher Albert Broschek and was expropriated in 1936 by the Nazis. At the beginning of September 1944 she was forcibly merged with the Hamburger Anzeiger and the Hamburg Tageblatt due to the war. The Hamburger Fremdenblatt was distinguished from other newspapers by its unusually large format - so this sheet was immediately noticed among all other newspapers. In addition, the Hamburger Fremdenblatt illustrated as early as the 1920s, many of his articles with large photographs in the copper-plate printing - that was then, when newspapers still predominantly from " lead deserts " (ie almost only from texts) existed, a sensation. . . ."
