Acosta Press Conference; Livestream Added
He will offer context for his decision to give Jeffrey Epstein the lightest of slaps on the wrist.
The rep billed the appearance as a "general press conference," without elaborating and answering questions about Epstein. Acosta is not expected to resign, an administration official told CNN, but he will further explain the circumstances surrounding the Epstein case. Marc Short, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, also told reporters at the White House that Acosta "will probably be sharing more information with you all." "And as you heard Alex say yesterday, we welcome the fact that there's additional evidence that can be prosecuted, the crimes and atrocities, and certainly should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," he added, according to CNN.People are wondering: Was Epstein blackmailing the DC power elite?
It strikes me as quite unlikely that Jeffrey Epstein's motive for allegedly inviting powerful figures from the U.S. and Europe aboard the Lolita Express on a trip to Orgy Island was mere fellowship -- as if they were playing a round of golf together. My dominant hypothesis is that he was video-recording highly illegal and morally reprehensible rapes for use as blackmail material.Or was it all just a matter of having money and influence and the shady "friends" that buys you?
Some questions are obvious -- and demand answers. The most compelling one about the 2008 case is 'why did Epstein get such kid gloves treatment?' The most obvious one about the 2019 case is 'why the hell did it take so long?' Wasn't it common knowledge among Manhattan's rich and famous that Epstein was constantly flying young women (some allegedly underage) to his mansion in Palm Beach and his island hideaway? Didn’t people call the Caribbean estate 'orgy island'? Wasn’t his private jet known as 'The Lolita Express'? I'm not saying these should have been hints, but... As blogger David Burge put it, 'It's always the billionaire convicted pedo with private Lolita Express jets to his own orgy island that you least expect'’ Droll but accurate. How did the Department of Justice manage to miss this ongoing scandal for years? The likely answer is that Epstein has lots of rich and powerful friends. As we say in Chicago, 'He knows a guy who knows a guy.' He must have known lots of guys. They were passengers on his planes, visitors at his estates.Was Epstein some kind of asset of US intelligence, gathering blackmail video on foreign leaders? Or maybe US leaders too? I wouldn't put that past the Brennan and Clapper types.
"Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem [for confirmation hearings]?" Acosta had been asked. Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he'd had just one meeting on the Epstein case. He'd cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein's attorneys because he had "been told" to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. "I was told Epstein 'belonged to intelligence' and to leave it alone"” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)I don't expect anything like that to be mentioned in this press conference, even if it were true. Video stream below. Update: Acosta said something like, when I came onto the case, there was already a deal in place to let Epstein off with no jail time whatsoever and no admission of having committed any sexual offenses; I and my prosecutors pushed to at least get some jail and a plea to soliciting an underage girl. He now says that most of the witnesses against him didn't want to testify against him, because they didn't want to be identified. He's saying that this sort of plea arrangement is common, as prosecutors have to weigh seeking real justice against a sex offender, versus protecting his victims from further humiliation and pain. He's stressing that at least his team got Epstein to admit to a crime that would force him to register as a sex criminal. He now stresses that it's highly unusual that a federal prosecutor would intervene in a state case -- and remember, he's saying the state had already given Epstein a complete pass -- and pointing out that it's big deal that he even got involved at all to get something harsher. Without naming Harvey Weinstein, he points out that some sex offenders are let off with no charges at all. He's pointing out that the female career prosecutor who handled this worked out an odd concession from Epstein: That any victim who came forward to sue him civilly would have her lawyer paid for by Epstein, and that he would have to plead no contest to the suit, agreeing to pay restitution. That career prosecutor did not want to notify potential victims, because Epstein could use knowledge of this deal to say, if they had to go to trial, "The DOJ is basically recruiting witnesses against me via this I-must-pay-restitution agreement. These 'victims' are just coming forward due to the smell of money in the air." So they decided to not notify victims until after Epstein agreed to plead guilty.

Such bullshit. Acosta is a moral cward, and cut a deal with someone who was going to make his life unpleasant.
Quick story: When Epstein was being sued civilly, the asshole would call up the girls' lawyer directly on the phone (despite the fact that lawyers can't talk to represented parties) dozens of times, and ask what it would take to make the case go away. Not money to the victims, but a payoff to the lawyer.
Epstein is the king of sleaze. He thinks money makes him untouchable, and it is plausible that he may have made some sort of similar back channel deal to the surprisingly ill-suited new Secretary of whatever branch of useless government.
By the same token, it was testified that Billy Jeff always had SS backgrounds run on the girls entertaining him to make sure they were of age. BJC is no one's fool.

Best speculation I've seen - Epstein played Pervy Pimp to the Powerful in NYC, and using his photos and info, he'd get them to give him a few million or more to "manage", which meant he parked it in some bank while he took regular cuts off it. Do that for a couple hundred New York millionaires and you can easily afford his lifestyle.
If this is true, he's never had any legitimate income at all - he's never been anything than a high end pimp, operating right out in the open.

I think this is probably true.
It's more of a lot of open secrets and everyone goes along, and close ranks to defend when necessary.
I don't think any of those people really, really wanted to turn Epstein in but were too afraid to do it.
Even when Cory Feldman told his story and dropped huge hints its not like anyone from that world supported his story. No one comes forward about stuff like this.

I don't like Acosta for other reasons (even before this, I thought he was Deep State) but on this issue, it looks like he's got his bases covered. I'm not worried about Trump. He cooperated against Epstein more than anyone. He's not threatened by this. Right now the knives are out for someone who well deserves it, and I'm not one to care about partisanship where true evil is being punished.
As for "jail" time, that's laughable. Epstein built his own wing at the PB jail, and was only there to sleep. It was not jail in any sense of the term.

The kind without clients. So that shoud say enough. The point is the details of the plea agreement. Acosta's rationale is simply not credible, as Ken White notes. The evidence was overwhelming and damning. The problem was that Epstein was playing hardball. Going after prosecutors and their families to dig up dirt, full court press on discovery, etc. Rich asshole tactics. Acosta folded like a cheap suit because he didn't like the pressure.

So, he was passionately in favor of SJWs contacting their victims' employers, trying the pressure employers to fire the person judged guilty of Wrongspeak. He said they had every legal right to do that -- which, they do.
But a legal right shouldn't always be exercised.
Anyway, I said, 'yes, they have a right to do that, and we also have a right to call THEIR employers and get THEM fired, pointing out that they are lunatic troublemakers who will almost certainly cause huge problems at their company."
And then popehat tells me, no way, no one should do that.
I asked, "Why," as one does, when speaking with someone who just said that leftwing SJWs have the right and DUTY to try to get Wrongspeakers they don't like fired, and yet now objects when I suggest using the same tactic -- calling employers to pressure them to fire the witch-chunters -- and now he's telling me that that is deeply corrosive our social cohesion and destructive of free speech rights.
This is of course absurd, especially for a lawyer. You cannot announce one principle for your SJW allies and then say "but you can't use that same tactic against my SJW allies." People do this all the time, of course, but this nonsense is supposed to be trained out of you as a lawyer. Even though lawyers ALSO do this all the tme -- they always argue for inconsistent application of rules on behalf of a client -- they're at least supposed to dress it up and DISTINGUISH this case from the other, and pretend they're not aruging for a different rule depending on personal allegiance.
But he didn't dress it up. He just kept flatly asserting that it was NOT a destructive of free speech for SJWs to try to get their enemies fired, but that it WAS destructive of free speech for me (or anyone else) to call up SJWs' bosses and get them fired.
I repeatedly pointed out that he was just applying different rules according to whether he liked the witch-hunters in either case, and he just kept repeating the same thing. He pretty much just said, "But we need these good liberals to silence you evil conservatives, and you just have to accept it."
I was flabberghasted. I can only repeat: I expect this sort of twitter stupidity from twitter users, but LAWYERS are supposed to have this trained out of them by halfway through their first year.
He wasn't even dressing it up! He just believes SJWs Uber Alles and he will not HEAR of using SJW tactics against them.

He's pointing out that the female career prosecutor who handled this worked out an odd concession from Epstein: That any victim who came forward to sue him civilly would have her lawyer paid for by Epstein, and that he would have to plead no contest to the suit, agreeing to pay restitution. That career prosecutor did not want to notify potential victims, because Epstein could use knowledge of this deal to say, if they had to go to trial, "The DOJ is basically recruiting witnesses against me via this I-must-pay-restitution agreement. These 'victims' are just coming forward due to the smell of money in the air." So they decided to not notify victims until after Epstein agreed to plead guilty.
Oh, I see now. That's utter horseshit. The "paid for by Epstein" garbage fails to note how the "deal" was limited in value and meant the lawyer inherently had a conflict in the case. There's a reason lawyers do this kind of work on contingency. That "deal" was more of Epstein trying to control his victoims, nothing more.
