Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Acosta Press Conference; Livestream AddedHe will offer context for his decision to give Jeffrey Epstein the lightest of slaps on the wrist. The rep billed the appearance as a "general press conference," without elaborating and answering questions about Epstein. Acosta is not expected to resign, an administration official told CNN, but he will further explain the circumstances surrounding the Epstein case. Marc Short, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, also told reporters at the White House that Acosta "will probably be sharing more information with you all." "And as you heard Alex say yesterday, we welcome the fact that there's additional evidence that can be prosecuted, the crimes and atrocities, and certainly should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," he added, according to CNN.People are wondering: Was Epstein blackmailing the DC power elite? It strikes me as quite unlikely that Jeffrey Epstein's motive for allegedly inviting powerful figures from the U.S. and Europe aboard the Lolita Express on a trip to Orgy Island was mere fellowship -- as if they were playing a round of golf together. My dominant hypothesis is that he was video-recording highly illegal and morally reprehensible rapes for use as blackmail material.Or was it all just a matter of having money and influence and the shady "friends" that buys you? Some questions are obvious -- and demand answers. The most compelling one about the 2008 case is 'why did Epstein get such kid gloves treatment?' The most obvious one about the 2019 case is 'why the hell did it take so long?' Wasn't it common knowledge among Manhattan's rich and famous that Epstein was constantly flying young women (some allegedly underage) to his mansion in Palm Beach and his island hideaway? Didn’t people call the Caribbean estate 'orgy island'? Wasn’t his private jet known as 'The Lolita Express'? I'm not saying these should have been hints, but... As blogger David Burge put it, 'It's always the billionaire convicted pedo with private Lolita Express jets to his own orgy island that you least expect'’ Droll but accurate. How did the Department of Justice manage to miss this ongoing scandal for years? The likely answer is that Epstein has lots of rich and powerful friends. As we say in Chicago, 'He knows a guy who knows a guy.' He must have known lots of guys. They were passengers on his planes, visitors at his estates. Was Epstein some kind of asset of US intelligence, gathering blackmail video on foreign leaders? Or maybe US leaders too? I wouldn't put that past the Brennan and Clapper types. "Is the Epstein case going to cause a problem [for confirmation hearings]?" Acosta had been asked. Acosta had explained, breezily, apparently, that back in the day he'd had just one meeting on the Epstein case. He'd cut the non-prosecution deal with one of Epstein's attorneys because he had "been told" to back off, that Epstein was above his pay grade. "I was told Epstein 'belonged to intelligence' and to leave it alone"” he told his interviewers in the Trump transition, who evidently thought that was a sufficient answer and went ahead and hired Acosta. (The Labor Department had no comment when asked about this.)I don't expect anything like that to be mentioned in this press conference, even if it were true. Video stream below. Update: Acosta said something like, when I came onto the case, there was already a deal in place to let Epstein off with no jail time whatsoever and no admission of having committed any sexual offenses; I and my prosecutors pushed to at least get some jail and a plea to soliciting an underage girl. He now says that most of the witnesses against him didn't want to testify against him, because they didn't want to be identified. He's saying that this sort of plea arrangement is common, as prosecutors have to weigh seeking real justice against a sex offender, versus protecting his victims from further humiliation and pain. He's stressing that at least his team got Epstein to admit to a crime that would force him to register as a sex criminal. He now stresses that it's highly unusual that a federal prosecutor would intervene in a state case -- and remember, he's saying the state had already given Epstein a complete pass -- and pointing out that it's big deal that he even got involved at all to get something harsher. Without naming Harvey Weinstein, he points out that some sex offenders are let off with no charges at all. He's pointing out that the female career prosecutor who handled this worked out an odd concession from Epstein: That any victim who came forward to sue him civilly would have her lawyer paid for by Epstein, and that he would have to plead no contest to the suit, agreeing to pay restitution. That career prosecutor did not want to notify potential victims, because Epstein could use knowledge of this deal to say, if they had to go to trial, "The DOJ is basically recruiting witnesses against me via this I-must-pay-restitution agreement. These 'victims' are just coming forward due to the smell of money in the air." So they decided to not notify victims until after Epstein agreed to plead guilty. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Such bullshit. Acosta is a moral cward, and cut a deal with someone who was going to make his life unpleasant. Quick story: When Epstein was being sued civilly, the asshole would call up the girls' lawyer directly on the phone (despite the fact that lawyers can't talk to represented parties) dozens of times, and ask what it would take to make the case go away. Not money to the victims, but a payoff to the lawyer. Epstein is the king of sleaze. He thinks money makes him untouchable, and it is plausible that he may have made some sort of similar back channel deal to the surprisingly ill-suited new Secretary of whatever branch of useless government. By the same token, it was testified that Billy Jeff always had SS backgrounds run on the girls entertaining him to make sure they were of age. BJC is no one's fool. Posted by: Charles Gibson at July 10, 2019 02:33 PM (r0YGN) 47
I have no idea what was going on with the Acosta situation at the time. Epstein was a protected man and the DOJ apparently wanted what he new about organized crime thugs more than they wanted to shut down a perverted child molester.
But there was really more to it than that, right? Clinton was still St. Bill back then, and Hillary still had a perceived political future of her own. So naturally the press swept all this under the rug at the time because it was hitting to close to home for their venerated icons and a presidential aspirant. This basically looks like a preview of the Dem-friendly DOJ we've come to know and despise over the past few years. And now Epstein is going to be prosecuted by James Comey's daughter?! Interesting... from VanityFair piece "HE SAID NOT TO TELL ANYONE": HOW TRUMP KEPT TABS ON JEFFREY EPSTEIN ...Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, who would later go to prison in part for his role in these hush money schemes, was in the room when Pecker sat down. Pecker, he later told me, used to send him articles and issues before they were published so that he and Trump could read them. After the meeting Trump called in Sam Nunberg, then a Trump Organization employee, who saw Pecker leaving Trump's office. "Michael was sitting in there when I came in, and the issue of the National Enquirer with the pictures of Prince Andrew was on his desk," Nunberg recalled. "He said not to tell anyone, but that Pecker had just been there and had brought the issue with him. Trump said that Pecker had told him that the pictures of Clinton that Epstein had from his island were worse." (Cohen, speaking by phone from the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, corroborated Nunberg's version of the events, though he declined to add any additional information about the meeting.) he was recording everyone Posted by: artisanal 'ette at July 10, 2019 02:36 PM (vEIlU) 82

In terms of investigating or prosecuting Epstein, not one thing is different today than was the case every single day between the 2008 plea agreement and now.
Part of the Bush, all of the Obama, and part of the Trump administration passed without anyone doing anything. However, intelligence, being not very smart, allowed Epstein to get the goods on the predilections of very powerful people in Washington, people whom intelligence has to answer to, so, Epstein was able to turn the tables and continue on his merry way. What really amazes me is that it's coming out that NO ONE knows (officially) how Epstein made his money. He's always claimed "trading", but now it looks nobody has any evidence of him actually doing that at all.
Best speculation I've seen - Epstein played Pervy Pimp to the Powerful in NYC, and using his photos and info, he'd get them to give him a few million or more to "manage", which meant he parked it in some bank while he took regular cuts off it. Do that for a couple hundred New York millionaires and you can easily afford his lifestyle. If this is true, he's never had any legitimate income at all - he's never been anything than a high end pimp, operating right out in the open. and to go back to another theme of mine - I believe that the FBI has ALWAYS known this. Evidence of heinous crimes involving the Clintons was alleged to be found thereon. This is why Comey had to reopen the investigation. To refresh your memories, the NYPD was pushing to have the evidence they'd found on Anthony Weiner's laptop computer made public, or at least investigated. Evidence of heinous crimes involving the Clintons was alleged to be found thereon. This is why Comey had to reopen the investigation.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch threatened to bring additional charges against additional police officers in the NYPD related to the Eric Garner scandal/death if they didn't shut up about the laptop evidence. They did. Then Comey covered all that evidence up, and closed the reopened investigation. >>>He really did go nuts with TDS.
he was already shit before that. So, he was passionately in favor of SJWs contacting their victims' employers, trying the pressure employers to fire the person judged guilty of Wrongspeak. He said they had every legal right to do that -- which, they do. But a legal right shouldn't always be exercised. Anyway, I said, 'yes, they have a right to do that, and we also have a right to call THEIR employers and get THEM fired, pointing out that they are lunatic troublemakers who will almost certainly cause huge problems at their company." And then popehat tells me, no way, no one should do that. I asked, "Why," as one does, when speaking with someone who just said that leftwing SJWs have the right and DUTY to try to get Wrongspeakers they don't like fired, and yet now objects when I suggest using the same tactic -- calling employers to pressure them to fire the witch-chunters -- and now he's telling me that that is deeply corrosive our social cohesion and destructive of free speech rights. This is of course absurd, especially for a lawyer. You cannot announce one principle for your SJW allies and then say "but you can't use that same tactic against my SJW allies." People do this all the time, of course, but this nonsense is supposed to be trained out of you as a lawyer. Even though lawyers ALSO do this all the tme -- they always argue for inconsistent application of rules on behalf of a client -- they're at least supposed to dress it up and DISTINGUISH this case from the other, and pretend they're not aruging for a different rule depending on personal allegiance. But he didn't dress it up. He just kept flatly asserting that it was NOT a destructive of free speech for SJWs to try to get their enemies fired, but that it WAS destructive of free speech for me (or anyone else) to call up SJWs' bosses and get them fired. I repeatedly pointed out that he was just applying different rules according to whether he liked the witch-hunters in either case, and he just kept repeating the same thing. He pretty much just said, "But we need these good liberals to silence you evil conservatives, and you just have to accept it." I was flabberghasted. I can only repeat: I expect this sort of twitter stupidity from twitter users, but LAWYERS are supposed to have this trained out of them by halfway through their first year. Popehat was nuts long before Trump. This is the ass who brays on and on about the First Amendment, but thinks the state ought to be able to ruin bakers and photographers who refuse to do what they are told. There's very little daylight between his legal opinions and his policy preferences, which tells you what you need to know about his "expertise." The law often constrains, requires outcomes one doesn't like. So if someone is always explaining how the law supports their preferences, you're getting advocacy, not sober advice. It appears that the left has realized that logical thought is harmful to their goals and they have had it excised from law school curricula. That's why we get all he insane decisions we get. You can't look at those decisions (and they have gotten so much worse) and think that anyone in law has any sort of logical abilities left. Lawyers were always known to be scum. Constitutional derailment update: 2nd district court now doing donuts in SCOTUS's front yard on travel EO, claiming "new" issues/questions in play. Thus, Trump's "victory" [upholding a long-mooted by the calendar executive action that was obviously entirely lawful and beyond the jurisdiction of any court] was even emptier and more damaging than it first looked.
But it's pretty clear that Trump and his WH cannot conceive of any course other than complying with lawless judicial tyranny and caprice. Fraught is one of those very curious words like
wrought. They sound like they should be past participles. OK, what hath God wrought is past for what did he wreak, but you don't wreak iron. And it bothers me because there's a straight line through (durch) almost all of our silent "gh" words -- night (Nacht), eight (acht), freight (Fracht), slaughter (Schlacht) -- and German, but I can't come up with anything for fraught or wrought. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 10, 2019 03:28 PM (fuK7c) hm? I always thought it was freaks that got all fraught. Posted by: Acoholic Asshole Shut In at July 10, 2019 03:31 PM (CPk08) 509

Bullshit. Acosta absolutely does need to apologize to them. He got his plea deal through because he failed to inform the victims about the sentencing hearing as required by federal law. Acosta shut them out on purpose so the judge would approve the deal.

Trump's Secretary of Labor was the US Attorney in Miami 10 years ago and he intervened in a state case against pedophile Democrat Jeffrey Epstein because the Florida prosecutors were going to broom the case and, instead, he made sure Epstein was charged with a felony and did jail time and registered as a sex offender even though the case probably wouldn't have resulted in a conviction if it went to trial because the victims didn't want to testify! Trump is totally done now! Posted by: Our Corrupt Media at July 10, 2019 03:29 PM (4Eo4+) WE MUST IMPEACH TRUMP TO PUNISH THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION!!! Posted by: Flawless Male Logic at July 10, 2019 03:46 PM (TAmPV) 527
Oh, I see now. That's utter horseshit. The "paid for by Epstein" garbage fails to note how the "deal" was limited in value and meant the lawyer inherently had a conflict in the case. There's a reason lawyers do this kind of work on contingency. That "deal" was more of Epstein trying to control his victoims, nothing more. Garbage, top to bottom. And failing to notify the victims is a violation of federal law, period. So Acosta is saying that this prosecutor knowingly violated federal statute protecting crime victims to secure this deal. A criminal and ethical offense. Classy. Posted by: imp at July 10, 2019 03:50 PM (w+Z9D) 530

One of the Power Line guys noted a while back that Acosta has wanted to be a federal district judge.
This plea was negotiated in late 2007 and the first half of 2008, when it was still likely Hillary would get the nomination, and probably win an election against a GOP nominee in a country with Bush fatigue. So taking care of a Friend of Bill (and Bubba himself) would have been rewarded with a judgeship by a grateful President Hillary. Posted by: Wethal at July 10, 2019 04:11 PM (3RspO) I'm actually a bit floored by Acosta's point that a guilty plea and any jail time was better than nothing. Considering how the Weinstein and Spacey trial are going, I can't say I'm surprised anymore. Anything short of "charges dropped, saul good, maaaan" is better than what was at the state level, and won't exactly win brownie points with the Clintons. Who? Who told Acosta that? He can't pawn off the responsibility for that evil plea deal onto the passive tense, if he wants out of his responsibility, he has to put a bigger name on the hook. Posted by: Rather Not at July 10, 2019 04:59 PM (oPogG) 540
Question from the audience - who was Acosta working for when these deals were made? Obama. And who in the Obama administration might have an interest in shutting this up and shutting it down? For example, a future presidential candidate who's husband was all over this shit?
When the press doesn't hold democrats accountable, it bits them in the ass. I find it funny that trump hires an Obama guy, and when this comes up, it is trump's fault. Posted by: Inspector Kemp at July 10, 2019 05:02 PM (VPvxh) 541
