SA is among my least favorite clusters. It used to be a great series, including free breakfast for exhibitors. Now it's just like all the others: pay to get in, park way over there and shut up.

Sweet paprika, too. "Szeged" brand is pretty good. Growing up with mom using McCormick brand, I just figured paprika was for making things look a little more red than they otherwise would be. Good paprika is worth using.

I drove into Calgary Monday afternoon to visit a friend, and make a repair to his car. No sooner do I get off the Duckfoot Trail, than I get behind a Toyota Turkel dawdling along. It signals for a right turn, and pulls into the turning bay, and I accelerate to pass. Then, right flasher still blinking, it darts back into the through lane, and I had to take evasive action. I go three more blocks, turn right myself, and get behind another Toyota, that changes lanes willy-nilly, with no signals at all. Both drivers appeared to be persons of Asianicity.

I was able to retire a little early, too. At first I
missed the stress, and would make up things to be stressed about at
home. After a few years I've gotten over that.
Yeah, it does take some getting used to not having deadlines and such and having to work out a schedule that is all one's own.
I was lucky, DIL got a great job opportunity and the grandson started school 3 months after I retired so I had a ready made "new job". Bestest job ever that pays nada.

I worked in IT, one thing I always reminded myself when things were going wrong was, at least it's not life or death for someone. Probably doesn't someone with patients though.

My carry bag is a canvas US Govt Issue gas mask bag.
It's just wide enough to stand on it's own and narrow enough that I can put it between the cab seat and my calves with no interference.
It holds all my necessary tools, ck book, bill fold, handy wipes, chap stick etc. It's tough, durable and has inside pockets. No worries.

That is called a "J-nut". Stamped out of thin spring steel, and there is an immense variety of them. Some are made to take machine screw threads, and some accept only the coarse threads found on sheet metal screws.
Good hardware stores have assortments of them, but the best selection of such can be found at autobody supply dealers. Those are the stores that sell automotive paint, body filler, and all sorts of tools for the autobody trade.
Incidentally, if any of the 'Rons or 'Ettes have kids that don't want to waste years in college, the autobody trade is pretty damned lucrative.

One of the three main goals of this legislation is to make it easier for dialysis patients to perform home dialysis rather than going to a center. I'm a little uncomfortable with that. I had originally considered home dialysis, but I was pitch forked into starting dialysis with no more preparation than having the fistula created on my left lower arm. I was not happy about this.
I have been going to the dialysis center for over four months now. It has taken some adjustment on my part and theirs. But I have come to the conclusion that the center is a positive.
Half the staff are registered nurses, the other half specially trained technicians. The staff works very hard to make a crappy situation as pleasant as possible. They work even harder to try to eliminate any chance of infection. And I know every member of the staff is capable of handling any emergency that might arise. Nor are they the least bit hesitant about asking someone a little more skilled than they are for help. (I am a particularly hard stick because my one vein curves instead of laying straight.)
As an added benefit, my renal doctor makes rounds at the center once a month, and one of his assistants, a nurse practioner, makes a separate visit on a monthly basis. On a monthly schedule, my blood is drawn for all the information my doctor needs to keep abreast of my condition. All this is done without me having to run to the lab and the doctor.
I'm really not certain doing home dialysis would match all that the center offers. I hope this does not turn into one of those situations where I am eventually forced to do something so vital to my existence.

I decided to replace the 11 year old cloudy headlight assemblies on my civic. (Tried polishing, that didnt work) That required taking off the bumper. The bumper wraps around the front wheel well and to secure it, it has one screw that goes thru a piece of plastic with a hole for the screw. Unfortunately, the end of the plastic broke, so the bumper is no longer secured by the original screw.

Might I offer a (hopefully) constructive alternative?
Rather than "defensive driving" (which, in my opinion, is fine for beginners, but just makes everyone else, slow, dumb and way the hell TOO dependent on JUST the brake pedal.)
The true "skill and safety" option is a High Performance Driving School Weekend.
Bondurant in CA is a good one, Skip Barber Racing School in D/FW another.
They DO have courses at the basic level, which are designed to make the average street driver a superior car "handler".
This means instead of reacting to every damn thing on the road with "brakes", you'll learn the skills to steer HARD around a hazard, or how to accelerate away from an incipient incident, and let it occur behind you, where you're safely away from it.
Yeah, you'll also learn how to apex a curve, and master both increasing and decreasing radius corners (on and off ramp cloverleafs, for example)
Much as I disdain "brakes" above, they're also going to teach you how to REALLY use your brakes, and most importantly, WHEN.
You come away from a weekend course as described, and you're GOING to be one of THE safest drivers on the road.
PERIOD.

Plastic welding, if it is thermoplastic; flexible body filler, backed up by a thin metal or plastic patch, if it is thermosetting plastic.
Thermoplastic: can be heated near or to the melting point, reshaped, and regains its strength once cooled.
Thermosetting plastic: either burns before it melts, or breaks down upon melting.
The aforementioned autobody supply shops have tools and supplies to fix either type of plastic, and both are used in automotive trims and bumpers these days. Their sales people can probably look at your car, and identify which method can be used to fix it.

Marrian Ann Zambrano pleaded no contest this week to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay $303 in court costs.
Court costs? She didn't even go to court. Bullshit.
The article is pretty funny, though:
As detailed in an arrest report, the victim told police that Zambrano, who appeared intoxicated, approached him outside of the R.J. Gator's restaurant and "grabbed him by his 'crotch' and began touching him in that area." The man told cops that it felt like Zambrano "was trying to lower his pants" during the 7:45 PM encounter.
Zambrano, the man said, was also "trying to dance on him, during which time she rubbed her breasts and body against his person." Mid-grind, Zambrano asked the man "to come home with her," police reported. The victim, who declined Zambrano's invitation, said she also hugged him, kissed his neck, and whispered in his ear.

Last night somebody was talking about couldn't play videos on their browsers. Someone suggested Chrome, but whoever it was (Jim?) didn't want to run anything with Google's spyware.
Well, there are actually two flavors of the browser, Chrome and then Chromium. The latter is the open source browser, and the former is Google's proprietary build of that code base.
Chromium is actually what many Linux distros use by default, although there's Linux versions of Chrome proper.
Chromium still has some Google hooks in it, and there is a fork of it that is completely "un-Googled", or de-Googled.
Here is Woolyss, which maintains links to the latest builds of these Chromium forks:

There are 64 and 32 bit Windows binaries, but Mac binaries. Make sure to get the "Marmaduke" fork, which will say "unGoogled".
All the Google hooks have been removed, and you've otherwise got the Chrome browser.

Sadly, about the only thing I really remember from that was the incredibly in-depth article, several pages long, from a 1970-something issue of Road and Track, and wondering why we didn't get this kind of technical detail in run-of-the-mill car magazines anymore.

Well, they call them DC3's in civilian service. I have ridden in one. That airline also has a DC6 4-engine job in service. I saw it fly out of Norman Wells, NWT one time with a load of drilling equipment. Had to fly downstream (north) a ways, make a big U-turn, and then fly south a long way up the valley to get altitude.
One of the owners of that company is an old-car guy, and I saw him in May at the Red Deer Swap meet. Got briefly introduced.

You're in Phoenix, iirc. About 5 or 6 years ago I was driving through Southern Az, mining country, somewhere near Globe or Miami, on the back highway, drove by a little airstrip out there in the middle of nowhere. There were 3 DC-3's sitting at that strip, and they looked serviceable. (The DC-3 just being a civilian model C-47). They're probably still there.

In 1923, a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London named Frederick Stanley Mockford was asked to come up with a word that would indicate distress and one that would be easily understood by all pilots and ground staff in case of emergency. The word 'help' was obviously not an option since it is a word that's being used in normal, everyday conversations.
Because Mockford was mainly dealing with the traffic between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, France he had both English and French in mind. That's why, he proposed the unique word 'Mayday' that derives from the French expression venez m'aider (come help me) but also sounds like an English word.

My daily driver is a 32 year old Ramcharger. It has no rust (never sees road salt) and has all the bells and whistles you could ask for.
I can afford a new truck, but nothing out there appeals so it will be the Dodge until I can't drive anymore or it gets totaled.
We have a Camry for our transportation module (wife's car) that's 18 I bought 2 years old. Don't like it, it's too small for me, perfect for her.
However, I would unhesitatingly recommend a Camry to anyone. Superb vehicle, ours still gets 36mpg highway and 23 around town.

"Roger" was "phonetic" for "R" (received and understood". In radio communication, a "spelling alphabet" (often mistakenly called a "phonetic alphabet) is used to avoid confusion between similarly sounding letters. In the previously used US spelling alphabet, R was Roger, which in radio voice procedure means "Received". While in the current spelling alphabet (NATO), R is now Romeo, Roger has remained the response meaning "received" in radio voice procedure. In the US military, it is common to reply to another's assertion with "Roger that", meaning: "I agree".

Probably for radio silence reasons - though again I thought I read that they lacked radios in most planes - the first wave of Japanese planes was supposed to have its final approach order [which type of aircraft went in first] determined by Fuchida's judgement of whether they'd achieved surprise. Which he would signal by firing one, or two, flares at a given point along the way. He f**ked it up - forget, think he wasn't sure that his single flare was seen, so he shot another .... oops, 2 flares instead of one. Close to that, anyway.*
AOP, yeah, 1923 seems early to develop protocols for radio, but maybe on the busiest route, between 2 leading aviation countries, it happened.
* As with lots of Fuchida's versions of big events, there seem to be iffy elements, and confusion.

Interesting thing, in both documentary footage and contemporary movie and TV productions, jeeps are very prominent in portrayals of Soviet operations on the eastern front. Gotta find some good sources and histories on quantities provided via Lend-Lease. And hmm, not even sure what the Russians called them - probably "dzheep". And I've already told the true story a few times about seeing the American-made jeep trailer/caisson being used to hold a big tank of kvas [beverage] in a park in Leningrad in the 7Os. Kind of the Russian version of Filipino jeepneys.

You know the profile of the "door" cutaway on the more well-known 1/4 ton "Jeep" that we all know and love?
Picture a typical Dodge truck hood, fender and nose from that era.
On the bodywork though, that "cutaway" was the same for the driver's row and repeated on the rear passenger row.
And some kind of "bustle" type open carrier behind the rear seat, extending down to the rear bumper.
They called that a "Jeep", and simply carried the nomenclature forward to the Willys variant.
Late thirties, very early '40s, in General Issue, it predated the Willys by nearly a full decade.
Simple as that, and that IS the history of the term.
I've read far too extensively on this to persuade me otherwise.

I got interested in "jeep". The G.P. theory is a common one, but it is dubious. You can read detailed explanation debunking.
"Jeep" was used as far back as WWI, before it came to mean the famous WWII vehicle.
There was a cartoon character in the '30s called Eugene the Jeep, who had extradimensional powers that allowed him to go anywhere. All he said was "Jeep". "Jeep, jeep, jeep." So Jeep means something that could go anywhere.
Anyway, jeep was used as far back as WWI and a common meaning was some new recruit or person of untested mettle. Military mechanics began to use to mean a new, untested vehicle. It was somewhat pejorative.
And then the Eugene the Jeep character came out.
There are other accounts of vehicles called jeeps during this period.
So that's likely how the vehicle we know today became to be called *the* jeep.

I have a book of recollections of Canadian flyers from WWII. One story concerned the crew of a bomber (possibly more than one) that hit a target in Norway, and because of German fighter activity, went on to land in northern Russia. They were met on the unimproved airstrip by Russian soldiers in a Jeep. One of the crew could speak a little Russian, and he remarked on the good fortune that America was now sending Jeeps to Russia. CV was the common designation for an aircraft carrier. The E was probably the designation for escort, or a small carrier. They were also called jeep carriers because they were smaller and more agile than a fleet carrier. They carried a smaller complement of aircraft and were mostly used as support platforms.

That is why I went with, basically "etym. unknown" or "disputed", for "Jeep". I have read a number of serious books and magazine articles about them, and I don't think I have found one that makes a serious claim that one of the possible origins is right, and all the others wrong.
I am guessing perhaps all the origin stories played a role, and there was some sort of preference cascade that made "Jeep" the common name for the vehicle. I believe the term "blitz buggy" was in vogue for a very short time.
And even today, that little trailer with a "fifth wheel" on it, used to link one semi-trailer behind another? a "jeep trailer".

IIRC, Leyte Gulf was the only major naval battle where the US was stuck with only Jeep Carriers for defense, since Halsey had taken all the main carriers 1,000 miles away to chase a Japanese decoy fleet. The US should have lost that battle, but due to some incredible heroics on the US side (and bad decisions on the Japanese side) they didn't.

Good question. When did the first Ski-Doo appear? Early 1950's? DAF cars had CVT's around then, too. And the belt drive in the snowmobiles is more of a torque converter than anything else. You cannot directly control it in any way.

Rhomboid is right. It's not the muzzle flash that he's talking about. It's the colored flash from the impact of the shell. Yellow red green were the primary colors for the shells. Let's say that the forward battery fired red dyed shells and the aft battery fired yellow. Your first salvo the red dyed shells were 50 yards short and the yellow dyed shells were 50 yards long. Then you could fire for effect in the middle.

It looks strange as can be, and it works amazingly well. The only thing it doesn't do well is sidehills. Because the castered front wheels want to "fall" downhill, I have to do a constant shuffle between right tiller and left tiller to keep it moving parallel to the slope, which is a swale in my case.

I just got an update from them that with the latest firmware update, they now support AI human recognition, in order to cut down on false notifications due to other moving objects in the field of view.
Gotta tell you.
For the price, one really can't beat them for low tech security.

The one nut that they haven't cracked at that price point is a web based control panel for using a laptop or computer.
Everything is done using their smartphone app.
Which is actually rather simple to use.
I don't do anything with Alexa, or any of that other stuff, just simple the setting available with the smart phone app.

Which is why I use them in areas where I am not concerned with eavesdropping and such.
Like rear basement, monitoring the external entrance door.
Same with the ones watching the back yard, and overwatch on where Mrs VIA keeps her Vespa parked in the rear yard.

Amazon has several aftermarket weather resistant housings for them as well.
I usually use the command hook, velcro picture strips to mount the metal disk on the window frame under the awning overhang.
And the camera itself is light enough that they will stay right where you put the strips.
And removal of the strips when done is painless and easy with no damage to the mounting surfaces.
