OK, one more quote.

Quote XXVI

One final observation: Joe Biden had a good four-and-a-half decades before he became history. For others it has been a far shorter reign: In the 2016 race Bernie was the coming man; in the 2018 midterms Beto was the coming man. The Age of Woke accelerates obsolescence. Mark Steyn

Those of you who have followed The ONT over the past few years know that I'm not a big Sen. Mitch McConnell fan. But every once in awhile Cocaine Mitch hits it out of the park.

NBC spent a great amount of time digging through century-old census records to trace McConnell’s history and find the slave owners.

“The two great-great-grandfathers, James McConnell and Richard Daley, owned a total of at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Alabama — all but two of them female, according to the county ‘Slave Schedules’ in the 1850 and 1860 censuses,” NBC reported.

At Tuesday afternoon’s Senate leadership press conference, McConnell was predictably asked about the report.

“You know, I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama,” McConnell said. “We both oppose reparations and we both are the descendants of slave owners.”

We're not saying trees are bad, but you better think twice about planting them.

There are many mysteries in the Amazon. Until recently, one of the most troubling was the vast methane emissions emerging from the rainforest that were observed by satellites but that nobody could find on the ground. Around 20 million tons was simply unaccounted for.

Then Sunitha Pangala, a British postdoc researcher, spent two months traveling the Amazon’s waterways strapping gas-measuring equipment to thousands of trees. She found that trees, especially in the extensive flooded forests, were stimulating methane production in the waterlogged soils and mainlining it into the atmosphere.

We recently covered "Smart Cities" here on The ONT. A city not mentioned was Berkeley, CA. Coal bad, whale oil bad, nuclear bad, and now natural gas bad.

As the United States has begun transitioning away from the use of coal and petroleum as a source of electricity and fuel, natural gas has been viewed as a relatively benign fossil fuel. After all, natural gas produces less carbon dioxide when burned than those other fossil fuels. It remains the energy source in about half of California’s buildings.

But scientists have increasingly warned that methane, the main component of natural gas, is itself a key heat-trapping gas — 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the first twenty years after release, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. In addition to the carbon dioxide created by its burning, the inevitable leaks as natural gas is extracted and shipped, make gas a serious climate threat in its own right.

Something (coal, gas, nuclear, water, etc.) has to be used to make this electricity. Solar and wind alone will not produce enough energy for this country. Electricity just doesn't come out of the wall receptacle. Or grow on trees.

ut he is then seen taking the full blast of the explosion in his face in central Exeter, Devon.

The white supremacist was given an indefinite hospital order at the Old Bailey in London today.

He pleaded guilty to arson and two charges under the Terrorism Act, Plymouth Live says.

The footage, played in court, shows Morgan splash fuel through a window at Exeter Synagogue and, despite getting engulf in flames, he calmly walks away.

Morgan pats his singed head and drives off in a Mercedes Vito van.

People in the U.S have been arguing over gender-neutral bathrooms for years – and opinions appear to still be split. Some people say that it makes them feel uncomfortable, while others say that it provides safety and inclusivity to all. Twitter user @MaryBear_ took to the platform to share her opinion and experience in a gender-inclusive bathroom and people in the comments had divided reactions.

The woman said that she was in the bathroom and two men came in while she was on her way out and that their presence and use of the bathroom made her feel uncomfortable.

A.G. William Barr recused himself from the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Epstein pleaded not guilty in federal court Monday afternoon after federal prosecutors alleged that between 2002 and 2005, the hedge fund manager had “sexually exploited and abused dozens of minor girls at his homes in Manhattan, New York and Palm Beach, Florida, among other locations.”

The legal team that represented Epstein in 2008 included Kirkland & Ellis’s Jay Lefkowitz, former independent counsel Ken Starr, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, former U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis, as well as Roy Black and Gerald Lefcourt.

With Barr recusing himself because of his work at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm, new deputy attorney general, Jeffrey Rosen, would normally be assumed to be taking over the oversight of the case. However, Rosen also once worked at the same law firm.

When Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, a non-profit in Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom, received calls from members of the public saying that they'd spotted an "exotic" orange bird that was unable to fly by the side of the road, they were understandably concerned. Members of the public were able to grab the bird and bring it in to the hospital, where veterinarians started treating the bird and realised that it was a seagull covered in curry.

Tiggywinkles took to Facebook to share photos of the bird, who they're now calling Vinny, short for Vindaloo.

Matthew 25:36 put into practice. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Grand Rapids First announced that the church will be paying off the medical debt of 1,899 families, an amount that totals nearly $2 million. The church partnered with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that purchases medical debt for pennies on the dollar, leaving the debtor with no bills or tax burdens.

"It took a $15,000 donation to help eliminate $1.8 million worth of medical debt that will never be able to be paid by these folks," said Sam Rijfkogel, the lead pastor of the church.

The families will be notified about the gift sometime next week through a letter from RIP Medical Debt. The recipient's identities are unknown, even to the church, because of medical privacy laws.

115 Trumpentwatters amusing again, nice insults for the Brit ambassador, who seems to have earned them. Unfortunately he also incorrectly sez judicial tyranny [my words, but the accurate ones] make elections more important. No, it makes restoration of constitutional sanity more important, in fact critical. Guess what the first step in that is?

In the last decade and change, at least 3 justices [Roberts - oh yes - Scalia, and Alito, I think] have stated in written opinions that the judiciary was courting [heh] repudiation with its outlandish behavior. Of all modern American presidents, Trump certainly leads the very small list of candidates likely to finally do it. But as predicted, his compliance with lawless courts is inviting more and worse, no end in sight.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!)

Trump should just start tweeting the truth, like:

1. Lincoln won the 1860 election without winning the fictitious "national popular vote"

2. Then Lincoln and the Republicans freed the slaves.

3. Then ONLY Republicans voted to allow the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to go to the states for ratification.

4. Then ONLY Republicans voted for the 1871 and 1875 Civil Rights Acts, which outlawed discrimination in the US and desegregated all schools.

5. Congress was flooded with African American Republican Senators and Representatives for the first 20 years after the Civil War, until the Democrats and the KKK (same/same) found ways to intimidate them into not voting and running.

6. Margaret Sanger, the Patron Saint of the Democrats and founder of Planned Parenthood, specifically pushed for legalized abortion as a way of exterminating blacks in America.

7. Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 returned US law to where it was as a result of the 1871 and 1875 Civil Rights Acts, which had been overturned by a racist supreme court in 1883. Democrat governors all over the south shut down school for the entire year to avoid letting black kids attend with whites.

8. A far higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

I am beating a dead horse on this issue, as I've been reading a book by David Barton called American History in Black and White, and the true history I'm reading really is pissing me off. Sorry about that. I just think it is about damned time Republicans called the Dems on the lies they tell about us.

Fuck them. War.

155 Technically, the "4 for $10" implies that four items have to be bought for the $2.50 unit price, but also implies that buying less than four items may incur up to full single item price per item. The "2 for $5" sale just means that you only need to buy two items to meet the $2.50 unit price, and also infers buying items in two's to maintain the $2.50 unit price.

A significant number of seagulls have been eaten, raw, by men adrift at sea.

One got totaled by Dave Winfield. And the Ontario Provincial Police tried to charge him with cruelty to animals.

Seagull stories...Okay. A few years back we were running a USCG Aux patrol on the Detroit River and were in Fighting Island Channel, just off of Mama Juda Island Shoal. The lighted buoys then had wire "deely-bobbers" to keep the birds from crapping on the solar panel. This gull got its leg tangled up in the spring-wire deely-bobber. We got in close to free it because we couldn't leave it like that - wouldn't be right. I ended up putting on heavy gloves, using a flotation cushion as a shield, and wielding the Wiss-snips of Justice, to cut the spring since I couldn't get the gull free.

The last I saw the gull it was floating in the river and drinking deep and plentiful.

She was just a sad pathetic figure and shows the horrors of meth. I really saw the underbelly today. But the defendent DID shoot the guy. Plead to involuntary manslaughter. Killed a man and will only serve maybe 3 years.
Posted by: Jewells45 at July 09, 2019 10:30 PM (dUJdY)

It's always amazing to see real courtroom cases, as opposed to the highly sanitized TV versions. In real life, the witnesses are confused and switch their stories around, the accused perp looks like an angel sitting there all cleaned up, and the victim is somewhere between a saint and thug, depending on who's telling the story. And Juries somehow gotta figure out what actually happened and mete out an appropriate judgment.

My most painful memory of jury duty (I was never impaneled, so there's that) had to do with one particular voir dire session in which 15 or so of us prospective jurors had to wait in a small room to be called out one by one for grilling by the prosecutor and the defense attorney. One guy in the group had been a juror on the infamous 1989 woodchipper murder trial, and he felt a need to regale the rest of us with the details of the medical examiner's findings, including the results of the ME's feeding a frozen pig through a woodchipper for comparison to what was left of the human victim. Being questioned in the courtroom by the lawyers in the present case was a breeze by comparison.

323 No - "the army you have" is not fixed, and beyond your ability to change. The analogy fails completely, past the earliest stages of, say, an administration. Primaries, nominations, elections. Every 2 years.

And this situation is distinctive, if not unique. A president who literally came in and took over a party's nomination from the outside. And, even more importantly, a party that opposes one of the central, if not *the* central, goal of your presidency* - restoring rule of law to borders and immigration.

Guess we'll see. Or maybe we're already seeing.

326 yeah, beef is mostly angus, holsteins are more dairy ... black cows have WHITE milk, there is a supremacy problem here, I'm sure.

There are some designer cows, or various shorthorns ... but angus are dependable breeders ... a neighbor went to angus ... I was there trying to help him get another breed up .. they grow faster maybe, but more trouble with calving. We didn't get her (trying to deliver) up, even with me giving my best pep talk and us tugging ... sad ... angus for the win.

327 "I suspect that Confederate Railroad's music sales will increase over this."

The band's leader, Danny Shirley, is showing far more class in this situation than one would expect from a deplorable racist redneck (sarc):

"As many of you know, we were scheduled to perform at the Illinois State Fair in DuQuoin, Illinois on August 27, along with our friends Restless Heart and Shenandoah. We have since been removed from that show by the Illinois Department of Agriculture because of the name of our band. This was very disappointing as we have played this fair before and enjoyed it very much. The outpouring of support from Confederate Railroad fans, fans of other acts, and the public in general, has been both overwhelming and very much appreciated....

"It has been brought to my attention that several people have asked Restless Heart and Shenandoah to cancel their shows in protest of our cancellations. I have spoken to both acts and encouraged them to perform as scheduled. Live concerts are how we pay our bills and feed our families. I would never want to see another act lose a payday because of this. Please go out to hear these two great bands.

"As I have said many times onstage, I am by no means a saint, but I am a man of faith and I have faith that God will see us through this as well as whatever comes next! Thank you for your support."

360 No - "the army you have" is not fixed, and beyond your ability to change.

364 Quatermass and the Pit was great indeed, but Nigel Kneale did an interesting riff on his premise from that film in The Stone Tape. Plus, the finale of the Quatermass saga (with John Mills in the title role) brought the whole thing to an end with a literal bang, and had some prescient things to say about the dark underside of the Seventies.

Interesting parallels between Kneale and Patrick McGoohan - two UK blokes who brought some amazing depth to the medium of television and both of whom operated from a very firm set of ethical standards and beliefs.

It's a smell thing. I don't like the smell of sh*t, not my own, and definitely not others.

Plus, working in a restaurant/bar, it's never appealing when a customer hears you cannoning out a particularly lively dump moments before you deliver their appetizers.

I think it sort of ruins the mood. I generally avoid eye contact with a guest that I hear blasting a bowl-paster in the men's room when I visit the table. It's even more awkward when they've heard you in there grinding one out.

It's not the worst from the standpoint of being disgusting, but there's one somewhere in the Himalayas (or possibly other mountains, I forget) where there's about a three foot wide trail next to a multi-thousand foot drop, with a rickety-looking crapper cantilevered out over the gorge off the side of the trail. But as a cultural norm - even though some will scoff that it's breaking down on the edges due to the damn younger generation - hard to match Japan for a major country that is incredibly clean. There was a restroom at a teahouse in Takeyama that I half-jokingly said I wanted to move into. It was amazing.

And the story from the 2OO4 [?] World Cup in France. Algeria [?] vs. Japan. Facility is divided, euro-anti-hooligan-lager-lout style, between the 2 sides. Cleaning crew comes in - finds the Japanese side spotless - so they nap in the stands, taking time to jeer their colleagues across the field who labored all night to clean the augean stables. Kind of the perfect illustration. I recall others.

444 I think you will find in most cases, the store will sell you one for $2.50, no problem at all. Those offers are intended to induce you to stock up on staples.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 09, 2019 11:46 PM (abNpZ)

You've got strange stores up there. 4 for $10 means 1 goes for $3. Otherwise, what's the point of the "deal".

Most people get really ticked off if a store advertises a bulk sale for the same price as the individual. It's not proper business to do that.

For a while I shared many people's dislike of McConnell. But after a while, I began to think the old boy is pretty damn smart. With a very slim majority, he's managed to jam up a lot of Democratic BS. And keeping Garland off the Supreme Court was a thing of beauty. Listening to Schumer and Pelosi sputter and choke warmed the cockles of my heart. Plus, he's managed to put a lot of conservative judges into the federal system during his reign as Senate Majority Leader, judges who are going to screw up the De m agenda as much as liberal judges have screwed up conservatives.

496 481 - very well-said! Good point on Colin Wilson - I see some parallels with him and Aldous Huxley, but he definitely took an approach to the liminal that corresponds to the genre that you mention. Houellebecq may be someone to add to the mix, given his take on Lovecraft, but he seems to be animated more by nihilism and the current state of French politics and culture.

498 I grew up in Phoenix in the 70's, and I loved it - still do. Was just reminiscing about it the other day. How do you get through the summers? Well, just about everyone had a pool, by 1 in the afternoon, you're in somebodies pool, hang out, have snacks, by 7 or so time to get cleaned up and have supper. Did that just about every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

and once you get older, the pools just get bigger and better, and have things like hidden bars behind the waterfall and all that stuff.

The heated seats were both nice in the middle of the night with your feet on the cold tile of the hotel bathroom and also slightly disturbing because of the 'Grandma was here' memory it triggered.

For low tech, in a Hibachi bar there was a very nice porcelain... squatting toilet (I am not sure of the term.) Immaculately clean, but essentially a porcelain hole in the ground.

Posted by: Surfperch

Back in the '90s, the city of Berkeley mandated recycling bins for every home. So the city ordered about 50,000 bins from some manufacturer, with the city name and logo embossed on them.

They arrived. Every single bin had the municipal logo and the word "Berkeley" as requested, but underneath it -- on every single bin -- was the "town motto":

"Heart of the Green Valley."

However, there was a major problem: That's not the town motto. In fact, the town doesn't have a motto. And Berkeley is not in a "green valley," much less the heart of one.

Not wanting to waste 50,000 misprinted recycling bins, the city duly distributed them to every home in the city -- where they are still in use to this day at most homes.

Everywhere you go in town, you'll see people's "Heart of the Green Valley" bins.

Almost as a joke, people sarcastically now think of it as the town motto.

To this day, no one has any idea where the phrase came from or how it ended up being embossed on every single bin. One of the all-time great municipal blunders.

If you're not "cheating" then you're not fighting to win.

And I am an incredibly, horribly, awfully and bloodily cheating sonofabitch in a fight.

Funny how they quit fighting when you bite off their eyebrow or bend their fingers at 90 degrees or crush their larynx or what have you.

Take your fight lessons from face tearing chimps, or don't enter the fray in the first place.

Bunch of leftists actually attacked a government agency and got to the 6th floor of the building before the cops literally beat them back. So far I have not seen any condemnation. https://tinyurl.com/y63fyn27

To be honest, every piece that I was able to find is of a style and condition that it may go to the new house with us.

The old furniture was very old, and not in good shape at all.

But I have found myself being very fortunate on this quest for what was originally intended to be a ' Find used stuff cheap, and re-donate it before we move' plan.

And why is it only for the first twenty years?
