Bathing is not something these people were conversant in. God forbid a drop of clean, fresh water make contact with their greasy, unwashed for months at a time, 19th century europeaan skin. In the lower-left, there's four people. There's the woman with the parasol and the guy in the gray derby, sitting. Behind them is a guy in a white hat, standing. And, sitting behind him, if you examine the enlarged version, you can clearly see, that little man was... Vincent van Gogh.

Siriusly, on this one, the enlarged version is quite a bit sharper, and seems brighter for it.

If there's any problem with a show like Seinfeld it's that the characters didn't ever actually get any retrobution for the various terrible things they did. Everything worked out fine every episode, regardless of who they screwed over in the previous 30 minutes.

Actually, that's not entirely true, because there was the series finale, but I think the backlash against that episode was that the audience got lost on the fact that the characters actually were despicable people because they were funny.

They died in the plane crash, and the trial is their final judgment.

80 This is such a pleasant scene but that aspect quickly gets lost in trying to see how Monet achieved the image. The ocean water is especially interesting to me because of the many discrete bits of color that seem to blend for an overall effect and indicate movement. The earth tones that make up the land areas are a nice compliment to the gentle sky colors and ocean. I don't know if the curve of the beach is deliberately echoed in the clouds but I think it helps bring the image together.

While Insurrection and the Final Frontier are bad, Into Darkness deserves its own level of Hell. 89 Bloomberg) -- The 14 sailors who died during a fire last week on a nuclear-powered Russian military submarine prevented a "planetary catastrophe," a top naval officer said at their funeral, according to media reports.

Captain Sergei Pavlov, an aide to the commander of Russia's navy, praised the heroism of the men, who died as they battled to stop the fire from spreading in the submersible.

"With their lives, they saved the lives of their colleagues, saved the vessel and prevented a planetary catastrophe," he said at the funeral Sunday attended by the navy chief according to the Fontanka news service.

I didn't watch the show enough to understand a lot of the characters. But that quote pretty much encapsulates your description of him.

That was a dangerous thing to say out loud, IMHO. Electronic peer pressure is a very real thing, as anyone who works in advertising will tell you. If it weren't, they'd be out of a job yesterday.

All the more reason to make absolutely certain that your Bullshit Radar is up and running at peak efficiency all the time. Don't ever turn it off if you can help it and even if a blip just appears to be a speck of dust on the screen, it's worth paying attention to.

While Insurrection and the Final Frontier are bad, Into Darkness deserves its own level of Hell. It craps on the best Star Trek movie ever, completely destroys a great character, AND nukes a fantastic revenge story. If they wanted Khan so bad, they should have turned "Space Seed" itself into a full length movie and picked someone other than Cucumber Rubberband.

Posted by: Kris at July 09, 2019 09:50 AM (OyyDO)

It's bad, but the thing I hate about Into Darkness is that it's a thinly disguised origin story for fucking Al Qaeda. One where you're supposed to feel bad about how Western Civilization essentially created AQ out of fear and hate, and how you're supposed to pity the AQ rank and file who get drawn into a conflict that they had no interest in.

It's the standard Lefty view of AQ put into the Star Trek universe.

154 This is such a pleasant scene but that aspect quickly gets lost in
trying to see how Monet achieved the image. The ocean water is
especially interesting to me because of the many discrete bits of color
that seem to blend for an overall effect and indicate movement. The
earth tones that make up the land areas are a nice compliment to the
gentle sky colors and ocean. I don't know if the curve of the beach is
deliberately echoed in the clouds but I think it helps bring the image
together.

Monet must've had his glasses on when he painted this. It seems more clear than I remember some of his other works being. Embiggened, it looks completely different that the scale on the top of this page.

OR maybe that will get you out of jury duty. Bingo! My wife just got a letter for jury duty. Years back when my daughter was a toddler she got called but they let her off because she had a young child. She didn't even ask, it was the form or something and they saw it and said don't come. My son is just a little guy now yet but this time they won't let her go for that. They don't let you off for too much any more, it's become very hard to be released from jury duty now. (We're in NYS)
In the old days you could get out of jury service much easier, for stuff like having young children or if your boss stated you were vital at work. Stuff like that.
And then if not you could always say something crazy when you got there, like you think we should go back to hanging people or something, or you could act all crazy racist like if the defendant was black you could say you don't like black people, (or insert defendant's race/creed/religion here) etc. That would get you off the jury pretty quick. But they are wise to all that now and of course and I'm told the court is not amused if you try that stuff nowadays.

205 91 George was not a nice or admirable person. He was an angry, scheming, weak person who intentionally poisoned his former boss, accidentally poisoned and killed his fiance, and routinely engaged in lying, cheating and stealing. I think he was a Democrat. NTTAWWT."

There's a great interview you can find online with Jason Alexander, where he talks about how he figured out how to play George. He said the first 8 or 9 episodes, he couldn't figure out who the character was supposed to be, the role didn't make any sense to him. So he was working on this with Larry David (who mainly wrote George's parts) and he was saying "Look at this part right here! George reacts to this thing in a completely insane way! No one would ever react like that!" And Larry David said "what do you mean? That exact thing happened to me 2 years ago, that's exactly what I did."

And that's when the light bulb went off in Jason Alexander's head, "Ah, George is just a little bit nicer version of Larry David!" And he decided to get to know Larry David as well as he could, and to copy his thinking, and that was how he created George.

"George, does EVERYONE have to like you?" "YES! YES! EVERYONE HAS TO LIKE ME!!! and I don't care what I have to do to them to make that happen!!!!"

now if George were powerful, he'd be a monster, but he's weak, and he's also a coward, which makes all of his nastiness and faux bravado hilarious.

I'm probably in the minority, in that I liked the first few seasons, maybe 1-4, and pretty much hated it after that. I think the characters became caricatures, being placed in more and more absurd situations.

Early on, there was a reality to it, even if slightly exaggerated in several ways. Kramer was an odd neighbor, and did not generally factor into the main story line. George was annoying and angry, but he had some dignity about him. Elaine was fairly normal.

Then they just all cranked it up to 11, and it got boring as hell to me.

How did it descend to trench warfare?

I'm reading Ron Chernow's biography of Grant right now, and what's interesting to me is Grant's restlessness. He had to find ways to move, to attack.

And then I think of Stonewall Jackson who would march his troops dozens of miles in large flanking maneuvers under Lee.

Was there no compulsion in the French of German command for movement?

285 I'm reading Ron Chernow's biography of Grant right now, and what's interesting to me is Grant's restlessness. He had to find ways to move, to attack.

When you look at the legendary geniuses of military history - start with Sun Tzu in the East, who's concurrent with Alexander the Great, and then Julius Caeser, on to Genghis Khan, and Frederick the Great, and Napoleon - you will find that constant movement and maneuver was always their hallmark. Always keep the enemy guessing, always feint, always use misdirection. Getting bogged down in seige warfare, or trench warfare, is one of the most terrible things one can ever to to your own army.

Now even Grant did end up getting bogged down in a siege, around Petersburg and Richmond, but Lee left Grant no choice, and Lee trapped himself and guaranteed the loss of the war with that decision.

In fact, that kind of maneuver warfare was attempted, in the Race to the Sea after The Marne. Both sides tried to go around the others' northern flank until they hit the North Sea coast. But the armies weren't physically capable of moving fast enough to achieve the turned flank that they envisioned.

I was always curious about why WWI was considered the worst of wars. There were the movies that made the case, but I knew that was, at best, a slanted view of the conflict.

I ended up picking up a book about the major national banks through the Great War. The author was a pure-Keynesian and lauded the bankers for dumping the gold standard and taking on fiat money in order to fund the conflict.

I didn't buy his take. Instead, I saw how the gold standard acted as a check on government's worst impulses and that by dumping it, fiat money, instead, allowed government to run well beyond any sort of constitutional or even moral bounds.

F'real.

I sat on a jury for a case of some kid arrested after a football game for some disturbance.

As soon as we got in the deliberation room, we hadn't even all sat down, when the lardly lady who, during the trial, seemed never to have been paying attention, swiftly burst out with, "We all know he's guilty! Let's go home."

Eleven others did our best to ignore her, and actually and sincerely deliberate like we would have others deliberate were we on trial. Lardly went along with whatever others wanted - a model citizen jurist.

Imagine being on a jury of eleven Lardlys!

BTW, folks, if you're called upon to sit in judgment on your fellow citizen, watch out for that multiple-charges trick. Charged with disturbing the peace plus resisting arrest. Juries (like ours) will split the charges (which in hindsight I regretted), and that's how the prosecution wins at least something. Just like they were trying to get Trump on "obstruction" when there was nothing to obstruct.

A. You are not worthless.
B. Use this vibe to your advantage. How, you might ask? Like this: The best interview you ever have will be for a job you don't care if you get or not. So embrace that point of view. Even if you really want that job badly. You will interview much better. Sounds counter-intuitive, and it is, but it's true.
You'll never be so nervous or wound up as when you are interviewing for a job you desperately need or want.

Flip that around. You'll never be so relaxed and confident at an interview as you will be when you think you probably won't get the job, or don't really care if you get it or not. So take that attitude with you next time.

"I'm probably not going to get this job. But what good practice it will be for next time." Be professional but relax, have fun. Be totally honest with the interviewer. Be yourself. Keep that mental angle: What have you got to lose? They'll either hire you or say no. It's not a firing squad. There'll be other good job opps.

Trust me, this works.

I wholly agree. Fiat money is the root of most of our economic ills. It's a scam used to run up debts and devalue them with incessant inflation. Gold backed money may fluctuate in value with metal prices, but you have to be responsible with it because you can't just make more.

308 How did it descend to trench warfare?

I'm reading Ron Chernow's biography of Grant right now, and what's interesting to me is Grant's restlessness. He had to find ways to move, to attack.

And then I think of Stonewall Jackson who would march his troops dozens of miles in large flanking maneuvers under Lee.

Was there no compulsion in the French of German command for movement?

310 283 I don't think that Kramer was a horrible person. He marched to his own drummer, and often tried, but failed, to help others: for instance, he invited smokers that had been kicked out of restaurants to hang out at his place, but then suffered skin failure as a result, he gave some leftovers to a homeless guy, who then stole his Tupperware, etc. Kramer liked to help the humans, but no good deed goes unpunished.
Posted by: josephistan at July 09, 2019 10:27 AM (7HtZB)

I'll grant that the ways in which Kramer were bad are less obvious than the rest of them, but he's still bad.

He's a terrible neighbor with no respect for privacy. He routinely acts in reckless and dangerous ways to those around him and his primary source of income appears to be payouts from nuisance lawsuits. He's also completely hedonistic and completely lacking in any self restraint or long term goals.

342 I'm very tempted to go off onto long digressions about how WWI degenerated into trench warfare AND about the generalship of US Grant.

The casualties of the early part of the war, when there was some movement, were staggering. Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousand lost in single battles. Most of them French, because the French generals sucked ass. (they didn't even have shovels for their infantry) Technology had outstripped 19th century tactics but the Europeans hadn't been paying attention to what we learned and went through during the Civil War. They hunkered down out of a need to get away from machine guns and high explosives. The one army that had a doctrine of maneuver, the German, stood on the defensive while they fought the Russians.

As for Grant, he was a good general but uneven. Sometimes he'd get oddly hands-off, possibly because he didn't know the army and the subordinates well. But hey, even Stonewall Jackson would go into weird funks or fugue states, like during the Seven Days. The fog of war is sometimes in the general's mind.

I think I can make the case it was the worst of all wars, because of the consequences. It's still common to talk about the many consequences of WW2, but that war itself was just one of the consequences of WW1.

All the problems in the Middle East, which are now building up to maybe even a nuclear confrontation? Thanks to WW1, before then the region had been mostly quiet for 4 centuries.

Communism and all of its byproducts? Thank WW1.

Nazism and all of its byproducts? Thank WW1.

Death of European confidence and European Civilization? Thank WW1.

You describe why it works well, but I'm surprised because the movie is inherently silly at its core. And yet, it still manages to connect emotionally. That's a very strong achievement on the part of the writer/director.

From what I understand, Galaxy Quest was written more as a drama than a comedy, so the dramatic elements were there from the script stage. When they changed direction in editing (I think it was in editing, might have been earlier) to go with more of a comedy, they kept in enough of the dramatic elements to keep the movie working while providing the whole film with a decidedly lighter tone. It ends up working really well that the light tone of the first 2/3 of the movie endears us to the characters and then when it gets more serious in the end, the audience is willing to keep on the journey despite the shift in tone.

The director, Dean Parisot, is directing Bill and Ted 3, by the way.

I've always hoped for an R-rated cut to get released on home video.

Though, I have a feeling it would be the exact same movie with some dirty words here and there.

Labor secretary gets an office, a car and a receptionist? Probably COLA as well?

Well people, I'll take one for the team here. I volunteer as tribute! Unlike the current labor secretary, I have actually engaged in labor as a means of procuring my livelihood, so you could argue that I'm already overqualified.

445 My favorite Kramer episode is the one where he goes into Jerry's apartment funny and the audience cheers.
-----------
Kramer? :

“I sense great vulnerability. A man-child crying out for love. An innocent orphan in the post-modern world.”

“I see a parasite. A sexually depraved miscreant who is seeking only to gratify his basest and most immediate urges.”

“His struggle is man's struggle. He lifts my spirit.”

“He is a loathsome, offensive brute. Yet I can’t look away.”

“He transcends time and space.”

“He sickens me.”

“I love it.”

“Me too.”

451 You describe why it works well, but I'm surprised because the movie is inherently silly at its core. And yet, it still manages to connect emotionally. That's a very strong achievement on the part of the writer/director.

Well, salvation is not dependent on one's social status.

Also arguing against slavery in 30 AD Roman Empire might have gotten him whacked even faster than he was anyway. And while yes, that was an essential part of his mission, he also needed it to happen *after* he'd gotten his message out and built an organization.
