Tonight's ONT Is Out Of Order

Out of order.png

I had the ONT all written on my iPad. When I went to upload it and make sure the formatting was correct for publication, I stepped right on my iPad.

This was a less effective method of posting than I would have preferred. The iPad still works, but the screen is shattered, and not in a "has-a-few-cracks-but-is-still-functional" way, but a "can't-see-or-do-crap-with-it" way.

There's a good guy in town who can replace the screen, but that doesn't do jack for tonight's content, so I'll go with what I've got at 10, and then add updates as I write them.

Canada

Justin.jpg

Yesterday was America's birthday, but let's not forget that July 1 was Canada Day, so happy belated to our cousins north of the border. However, in Newfoundland, Canada Day is treated as a day of mourning as much as it is of celebration. Do you know why?

July 1, Memorial Day

When I visited Newfoundland, the ferry to the island was named Blue Puttees , which was the name of the regiment that was wiped out at Beaumont Hamel. The regimental motto is "Better than the Best", and indeed, they quite literally gave their all at the Battle of the Somme.

9:15 a.m., July 1, 1916: 758 soldiers and 23 officers begin their advance

9:45 a.m.: 85 per cent of the force is dead, dying or wounded

July 2, 1916: 68 men report for roll call.

The article traces how this disaster may have ultimately cost Newfoundland its independence.

Coincidence? I Think Not!

Just Deserts

A video went viral this week. In it, a young woman took a tub of ice cream out of the freezer at the supermarket, proceeded to lick it, and then put it back in the freezer. Everyone was grossed out by this juvenile bid for attention, but she got it-11 million views. Now it seems that she may get her just deserts:

Woman Who Licked Tub of Ice Cream Faces 20 Years in Jail

You can get the whole story, and watch the video if you want, at the link.

Related: Speaking of viral videos, here's another one that went viral this week that's a lot less gross. Proof that cows will do anything for sax.

Bro Code

Science!

Could cities of the future use the heat from their subways to heat buildings? It's possible.

Engineering heat out of metro tunnels

Kinda neat.

Road Trip!

Ever been on a long road trip? Yeah, me either, but if you do go, here are some games to play to pass the time

That ought to be enough content for one night. Tonight's ONT brought to you by snails:

69 Some of you know exactly what I'm talking about when you have the Same Conversation over-and-over-and-over again with a Parent with dementia.

I'm a very skilled talker and I try to keep things with Dad from getting emotional, but it is unavoidable. He doesn't understand, even when I soft-sell ideas.

...He "can't live with me", or "this" and he thinks his Family is "out to get him".

To make matters worse, my stroke-riddled Mom pokes at him and aggravates him, so I get to deal with the Fallout.

God is Hilariously Awesome! Since I never had children of my own, He granted me "Children that were Just Like Me."... *HAH!*

I think I have put The Temporary Lid on the situation, but I just had to vent a little.

I'll not be taking questions. YES... I have "thought of it" and I'm as out-ahead of "it" as I can possibly be.

Tonight is not the night for inane appeasement of others' questions. I just had to Vent.

-Thank you all for your Prayers. It is in Times Like These that I Feel God's Love.

94 A lot of people don't know, the classic Hawaii-Five-O theme? It had LYRICS.

Here they are, courtesy of qdpsteve:

You see bad things-happ-'nin
Dial Hawaii-Five-O
See a nude man fappin'
dial Hawaii-Five-O
Don't let criminals hurt our new state
Keep Honolulu virtuous and great
When you see crime
Dial Hawaii-Five-O

That man's choked a chicken
Dial Hawaii Five-O
There's men dressed as women
Dial Hawaii Five-O
Thieves, carjackers and perverts will see
There's really nowhere that they can flee
When we catch you
We'll dial Hawaii-Five-O

Someone stunk the restroom
Dial Hawaii Five-O
Beggar's hopped up on shrooms
Dial Hawaii Five-O
Anything that quite pisses you off
Don't let your sense of outrage get soft
Just grab your phone
Dial Hawaii Five-O

Surfers showing buttcrack
Dial Hawaii-Five-O
Hotel staff just talked back
Dial Hawaii-Five-O
If you can't handle stress in your life
Make local cops clean up all the strife
If it bugs you
Dial Hawaii-Five-O

Years ago, my dad had to attend a retreat of sorts (company thing), where they sought to make folks more accessible or something.

One trainer tried to coax my dad into speaking in softer tones, to appear less intimidating when interacting with others.

My dad snorted, "That's not gonna happen, son."

Oh, forgot to mention this, Dad is a Marine with a very strong voice. He sang bass with Barbershop Quartets for decades. When he spoke, we kids hopped to with alacrity.

My speaking voice is not quite as authoritative as his, but I refuse to do the soft-speak up-talking bullshit.

If someone wanted to do real damage to civil society, adulterating food or water is very, very doable. ARs got nothing on this for causing terror and sowing the kind of mistrust that eats away at the trust that makes civilization possible. One of my college girlfriend's did the baby talk thing in a weirdly romantic way until I spoke up and WTF'd her one day. I hate to be that guy, but in retrospect, I assume any young woman who talks like that had dysfunctional relationships with one or more of her male relatives.

"In the prevailing optimism, the resources of the Exchequer were believed to be limitless. The public debt of the island, accumulated over a century, was in twelve years more than doubled; its assets dissipated by improvident administration; the people misled into the acceptance of false standards; and the country sunk in waste and extravagance. The onset of the world depression found the island with no reserves, its primary industry neglected and its credit exhausted. At the first wind of adversity, its elaborate pretensions collapsed like a house of cards. The glowing visions of a new Utopia were dispelled with cruel suddenness by the cold realities of national insolvency, and today a disillusioned and bewildered people, deprived in many parts of the country of all hopes of earning a livelihood, are haunted by the grim specters of pauperism and starvation."

Judge should:

1) Force Google to show the ice cream licking video to any future employers or boyfriends who search for her name; forever.

2) Distribute her photo to every restaurant within a 100 mile radius and make her worry that no meal she ever eats out will be safe.

I had to look up desert vs desert vs dessert.

Desert as in the hot dry place, and desert island, and to desert something comes from the Latin, desertum, meaning "thing that is abandoned".

The second form, as in just deserts, come from Old French, which I didn't know. The French word is "deserte" which means "worthy to have".

Now, dessert comes from French as well. The word means "last course of a meal", which itself comes from a word that means "to clear the table".

Correct. The SA is further south. The closet 'big' fault to Ridgecrest is the Garland fault.

Up the western side of China Lake are a series of broken faults that look like broken, uncooked spaghetti noodles. That's where tonight's quake happened.

477 Hmm, also in America's Finest City*, but didn't feel a thing. Yesterday's or today's. No pool to serve as a quake detector. Large glass doors rattle, tho, and none of that either [there have been several mysterious big rattles the last 2 years - military claimed no sonic booms, which used to be common in the old days, so mystery intact].

* amazing how few know the slogan was entirely ironic/a joke, done when the GOP convention cancelled in '72 - went to Miami Beach instead - at a time when all but a few in San Diego were entirely content to remain the smallish, quiet, not-famous paradise it was at the time

489 keena, tornadoes have a smaller footprint but are much more violent and deadly, in a modern society, than e-quakes. A "big one" will be very expensive, but not very deadly, most likely. If you're not in an older and/or brick building, or poorly designed high-rise [fire], you'll probably be quite healthy to enjoy the lack of basic services for weeks.

One can still occasionally get a show from the Marines when driving thru Pendleton on the I-5. Not like the old days - full amphibious landings, armored vehicles roaring along both sides of the freeway, choppers flying low over you. But some Ospreys, choppers, armored vehicle convoys, maybe an LCAC or two landing on the beach.

516 Well, that is excellent news! Did they drop the oil pan and check for debris?
They did that when they replaced the oil pump. I dunno if they "checked" for anything, but they put in a new pump and new oil. They did not check the bearings at the time, but they seem to be working fine, so I guess we dodged a bullet there.
My opinion now is that in the first thousand miles all the stuff that had decayed from sitting for so long broke, and once all that was fixed the engine is running like it should.

Was watching it on cable, back east, when a CNN guy was doing a stand-up live report in front of one of the collapsed I-1O overpasses. Much drama. "Year or more" to fix it - and the 1O was one of "the busiest freeways in America", blah blah blah.

Laughed, turned to the person watching with me, and noted that with incentives, the roads would be repaired in weeks. Guess how it turned out.

Posted by: Weirddave at July 06, 2019 12:45 AM (WOsvU)

That's something not to be neglected. When the A/C is not on, the clutch pulley acts as an idler for the serpentine belt. With a serpentine belt system, like all modern vehicles have, every idler and every driven pulley has to be in top shape, or the belt gets thrown, and nothing gets driven. When the A/C compressor and clutch got pooched on my '96 Suburban, I was able to get an "compressor replacement idler", which is just basically an idler wheel of the right size, mounted on an aluminum casting which bolts up in place of the compressor. If such a unit is available for your RV, I'd recommend buying one, and toss it in the toolbox somewhere. That way, if the A/C clutch goes, you can unbolt the compressor, tie it aside, and bolt the idler in its place, and motor on down the road.

596 And i got my tractor fixed today! Had two new hydraulic hoses made for the left side loader lift cylinder. My estimates for length were close enough, and I was able to get both to fit, with some careful pipe bending. I got rid one oddball fitting on the one cross pipe, and brazed on a male flare fitting made from a line plug. And both that brazed joint, and the butt weld I made on the other cross pipe hold pressure. Not.One.Leak. And the re-routed (back to their original configuration, mostly) hoses do not snag any parts as the bucket is raised or lowered. I am real pleased with that. The little loader is a real workhorse for me, and I have come to rely upon it a lot.

Ouch! At least it should be covered by insurance. My area of Alberta has a bad record for hail. My house took a real beating in '06, I think it was. Roof and siding both effectively destroyed. I got the insurance settlement, and kicked in some more money, and went for a steel roof, and stucco exterior for both house and garage. Low maintenance.

614 Check out this map comparing four moderate-sized earthquakes in various parts of the country:

https://preview.tinyurl.com/y6t2jbd9

Because of differences in geology, an East Coast quake is felt over a vastly larger area than a comparable West Coast quake. Because California is so broken up by faults, even a large quake is only felt over a fairly small area.

This is why it's a good idea to submit a "Did You Feel It?" report on the USGS website even for a small quake. The more data points they get, the more detailed maps they can make. And you're doing your part for Science!

My roof is called a "standing-rib" roof. Continuous metal sheets from ridge to eaves. Took the old asphalt shingles off first. It's dark green. I think it looks fine. You see some big-dollar fancy rural homes with that sort of roofing around here. Snow slides off it. And if there is a range fire, well, there's nothing to burn. Steel roof: nothing to ignite; stucco walls: nothing to ignite. It would take a hot, sustained fire to get the studs in the wall burning.

623 I happen to think wood is better than anything but steel. It takes sustained heat to set wood windows on fire, and then there's the burn-through time. I happen to love wood windows. Said by someone who's evacuated many times- even once from where he'd been evacuated to.

The snow sliding off can be entertaining. Sometimes it comes off like an avalanche. Stucco would certainly protect better than vinyl siding.

Normally that would not even be a consideration, but the neighbor across the street was a little too enthusiastic about celebrating the 4th. He apparently invited everybody he knew to his place for fireworks. This morning the street was badly littered with refuse from the shells.

My neighbor, a Ranger vet with a couple tours in Afghanistan, had 5 to six hours of misery. Sometimes people have no idea of the misery they cause.

rumor has it this one was unusually shallow and therefore more energy went into the surface.

667 612 We had hail damage too. The insurance company agreed to replace the roof.
I sprang for the extra dollars to replace the shingles with a metal roof.
Some metal roofs look like they belong on farm sheds. But the roof I got looks like regular shingles, and it is much more durable. Better is better.
Anyway, this is just to say that metal roofs can actually be attractive.
Oh wait, there is a downside. The shingles can't be walked on. So much for roof Christmas decorations.
Posted by: Delurk Ergo Sum at July 06, 2019 01:24 AM (zeg3

I like metal roofing, even the old stuff. I think it's more attractive than the red tile for some reason. Maybe it reminds me of beach houses?

Posted by: wasbrenette at July 06, 2019 02:50 AM (Vhkmw)

670 Earthquake insurance is quite the racket. Up here, it's not always available, depending upon where you built. I could probably get it for this place, since it was here in 1962 (pre 1964 quake) and seems to have done just fine. But my last place? No f'in way. In the November quake, part of the foundation sank six inches, another part about 4 inches, and believe me when I tell you that place will never be level.

And the price of insurance is astronomical, and they will only pay about 60% of replacement cost. So, no thanks. We will rely upon savings and elbow grease.

687 Welp, it's both good and bad. My mom asks me the same question 12 times an hour. I can answer any old thing. Doesn't much matter. She still thinks she is in charge, and I have yet to disabuse her of that thought.

On the other hand, she has forgotten most of what she was mad about, so she's not quite as nasty as she once was. She is still quite sure I am an imbecile and can't take care of myself, let alone the family I have, or her, or the rest of the family I routinely look after. I'm so damned dumb I stuck around to look after her, after all.

I suspect I will also go senile at some point, and I just hope I'm not half the pain in the ass she can be, but then, I will still be someone's mom, and he will still be my kid.

That darned fourth commandment.

Posted by: tcn in AK at July 06, 2019 03:38 AM (vVOK2)

688 The same questions over and over have come to be the easy part for me.

Lately, it's the insane ideas mom has about stuff. There is no convincing her. I'm the "stupidest person" for not knowing ...whatever it is. Her lack of being able to come up with the correct words often leads to more confusion.

I'm finding that for her, the slide downhill seems to level off for a short time, then starts again at a quicker pace.

Posted by: My life is insanity at July 06, 2019 03:59 AM (Z/jzm)

689 She was always the kindest, sweetheart of a mom. Her personality changes have surprised me. Sometimes she is downright rude to me, and my son (who stays with her when I'm not here.) Her filter is mostly gone. Yet, my younger brother she fawns over.

When my wife's aunt was in assisted living, with beginnings of dementia, she would hang out with another lady that was a little more so. When we would visit and sit with the aunt in the day room, my job was to keep the other lady occupied with what conversation I could. She would ask the same questions every 5 minutes, usually weather related, so I made a game of it.
How many times can I answer the same question differently, but still mostly true.
