Had some coffee, cleaned up the kitchen, did some yardwork. Mom showed up to visit around noon, we devised a plan of attack for the garden, then went to Meijer and got stuff for dinner. Started the charcoal with some newspaper and an air compressor, then had steaks with sesame asparagus. Neighbor saw mom's car in the driveway and stopped by after dinner for a visit. She just left. In between, I've been here.
Very nice day all around. I hope all yours were pleasant as well. Posted by: hogmartin at July 04, 2019 09:56 PM (t+qrx) 23

Our 4th of July plans went to heck. My son's in laws were due to arrive for a 2 week visit at noon tomorrow. The kids were gonna spend today finishing up yard work, house cleaning, prepping the guest room and shopping to make sure they had favorite food stashes for the in laws. I was making pulled pork, coleslaw etc., for the kids to come over and have a leisurely meal when they were done.
The in laws texted at 9pm yesterday and said "We decided to leave a day early. We're in Chelsea now. Be at your house in an hour." Who the hell does that?! Son came by today and picked up some of the stuff I made to take home for a lunch for everyone and as he finished telling me the story we looked at each other and said simultaneously "How rude". An hour early, sure, fine. A day early, OK just let me know. 2 days early with zero warning, you're rude. Posted by: cfo mom at July 04, 2019 10:04 PM (RfzVr) 55

I was at a picnic given by the church organist. A friend of hers was there, a former fifth grade teacher who knows a lot about history. He was very interesting, but is a proponent of the idea that Hitler escaped the war to live in Argentina and doubles of he and Eva Braun were in place in the bunker. I really had before. never met anyone who seriously believed this.

Don't get me wrong: I really love the Fourth of July. It's always been one of my favorite holidays since I was a kid riding my decorated bicycle in the town parade. But having to sit up with a terrified pup until two in the morning is the pits. Already it's sounding like the opening barrage of the Battle of Stalingrad. Give it another hour, and Stalingrad at its worst will seem like the ultimate in peace and tranquility.

Stuff like the below is why I enjoy reading Quora. :-) * * * How can we get rid of Trump as soon as possible? by Anthony Cady, studied at Grossmont College Answered 1h ago Dear Diary, Trump makes me soooo mad! How dare he celebrate this county's birthday. Why can't republicans become progressive and hate America too? It's not fair! Trump has to go because yesterday he hurt my feelings and I don't even know what he did! http://thezman.com/wordpress/?p=17987 Posted by: Duncanthrax His equating Ngo's reporting on the panifa protest as the equivalent of "someone walk(ing) into a biker club and ...challenging the bikers on their home turf, no one would be shocked if the bikers beat the crap out of the idiot" is bullshit. Went down the road to a park party today, a great big circle of vendors forming a food court, tons of seating, two outdoor stages for live music, excellent bluegrass playing when we were there.
Adjacent the food court was a carnival set up on a big open grass lot, all the spin rides, shooting galleries, fun house, all from a Chicago outfit called Windy City Amusements. Many people there, a nice mix of young and old, plenty of stars and stripes on hats, shirts, pants. This being McHenry county, IL, almost all were white, which reflects the demographics of this far NW suburban area. The county with a population of 300,000 has 11 percent hispanic, and that group is almost entirely Mexican in origin. The latinos come to the adjacent beachfront park on weekends in large family groups for cookouts, socializing, and beer and boombox music, and today was no exception. When we walked by the beach park to get to the festival across the street, there were probably 100 latinos at the beach park. But at the festival across the road, hardly any. The few that were there were at the section where all the amusements were set up. No latinos at the big food court area and table dining, and none watching and listening to the live music on two stages. Segregation, still alive and kicking, right here in far NW Chicagoland. Turns out that damn thing was trying to cut fiber optic cables. They got the sub back to port pretty quickly after the accident, so it doesn't sound as if it was cutting cables in international waters.. On the other hand, they were clearly up to something - rumor has it that two of the fourteen dead were Heroes of the Russian Federation (the successor to the Heroes of the Soviet Union), which is Russia's highest decoration (they give it to civilians as well as military). http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=382110#c30985054 One was of my brother, who, despite our father's careful instructions on fireworks safety, held on to a Roman candle which, of course, exploded in his hand and Dad had to drive him to the hospital. Only tonight, well over a half-century later, do I find out from Mom that oldest brother had been encouraged to defy Dad's fireworks safety instructions by our family doctor! (The man about whom Mom has so often said, it's a wonder any of us survived. Actually, Dad didn't.) Posted by: mindful webworker - click me and win! at July 04, 2019 11:04 PM (CJOtA) 237

The wife and I were forced to take a detour through the small town of Stewartsville, MN on our way to an Independence Day party. Imagine a sunny afternoon, 4 PM or so, and the sidewalks bordering "Main Street" lined with folding chairs and coolers in anticipation of a parade scheduled to take place around 8:30 or so. That was the scene in Stewartsville this afternoon. And btw, we spotted only one person anywhere near the parade route, and he was desperately seeking a few square feet of unclaimed sidewalk space to stake a claim to take in the night's festivities. Absolutely no worries that any unattended property would be stolen or vandalized. That America still exists. For how much longer is anyone's guess.

Really loved seeing the fireworks shows tonight. Have to say, from my balcony I saw more and greater fireworks shows from all over Dallas and the suburbs than I have seen in decades. Even saw tons of people setting off their own fireworks in private neighborhoods and apartment complexes, in numbers I have never, ever seen. It was beautiful. Watching children staring wide-eyed at the night sky, laughing and cheering and screaming for more, was an absolute delight. Seeing children and their parents celebrating America's founding really gives me some degree of hope for the future. I was raised by patriots, and their love of country completely nullified my Leftist teachers' attempts to make me hate America.

The Pledge was a fascist oath under Bellamy; Americans were to pledge fealty to the unrestricted Union. Woodrow Wilson showed Americans what an unrestricted Union would look like. Apparently untrue. A Portland police lieutenant saw a milkshake that he thought had the consistency and smell of quick-drying cement, but there is no evidence that it was thrown at anyone. The pro-Antifa types in Portland are running around screaming how they've been maligned by the milkshake rumor. They are trying to distract from the fact that Rose City Antifa beat three people badly enough to go to the hospital, including Andy Ngo, who was admitted to the hospital with a brain bleed. "at the very end he says that two states nave been added since he learned the pledge and two words "under God" were added to the pledge. I'm not sure what to make of that."
The exact wording of the Pledge has changed several times since it was composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892. Bellamy's original version was: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." A couple of tweaks were made in the 1920s -- changing "my Flag" to "the flag of the United States of America" -- then "under God" was added in 1954. We had an old blacksmith come and give a talk when I was in high school. One of the stories he told was about when he first got one of those new-fangled automobiles (I think a Model T). The big problem in the winter was that the oil of that day would basically turn to vaseline when it got cold, making it impossible to crank start the car (even for a blacksmith... he was an old man when I saw him, but the dude was still pretty buff). So, he'd take a blowtorch (a genuine old-time blowtorch... kerosene, manually pumped up with compressed air), crawl under the thing, and heat the oil pan for a while until the oil got thin enough to turn the crank. Douglass was originally of the belief that the Constitution was illegitimate since it supported slavery. This was a popular belief in Abolitionist circles.
He was brought around, at least in part, by Lysander Spooner's essay The Unconstitutionality of Slavery, which pointed out that the only elements that supposedly supported slavery were twisted in language and legal theory, and that if taken as a contract (instead of with what we now call penumbras and whatnot) it should say what it means. Wordy man, but it boils down to: IF a group of men draw up a contract and then later admit that they intended to do something else, but they knew that the language would be rejected by those ratifying it, should we go by what is written or what after the fact they claim to be what was intended to be, in secret? Spooner later felt his original conclusion was not correct because he came to believe that no government could be forced to abide by a mere document, and went full Anarchist, however I find his argument to be compelling. So the crowd in DC was huge and very diverse. I would say it was
50-50 majority and minority (as the Dems view things). The MAGA hats were everywhere and they were evenly distributed throughout the crowd. They fly bys were great and very inspiring. Everyone enjoyed them. My only complaint was the fireworks display threw up way too much smoke. I hope this wasn't the case fore everyone, from every angle, because from the Mall area between the Washington Monument and the Capitol, it was like someone popped smoke about half way through the show. Again, the crowd was large and positive. I expect the fake news to lie;because it works. The thing I will never understand about NJ is how they let 2a and even knife rights get trampled. But if you don't have the numbers, what can you do?
