Spotify wants a refund.
As major music streaming services appeal a royalty rate decision, Spotify is taking things one step further: The world's biggest streaming music service is reportedly seeking a refund for overpayments made to songwriters and publishers last year, Music Business Worldwide reported. Last year, a royalty rate-setting panel in the US, called the Copyright Royalty Board, ruled that a particular kind of royalty paid to songwriters and publishers should rise 44% or more for 2018 through 2022. The board finalized that rate -- called a mechanical royalty -- earlier this year. Then streaming services like Spotify, Amazon, Google and Pandora appealed the payment increases in March. Now Spotify is saying it paid too much last year and wants a refund, according to Music Business Worldwide.

The National Rifle Association has a mess on its hands.
The NRA, The New York Lawsuit, Ollie North, And Chris Cox The news yesterday regarding the National Rifle Association was headlined by a story in the New York Times that said Chris Cox, head of the NRA-ILA, was suspended and put on administrative leave. This followed a late Wednesday filing in New York Supreme Court (the trial level courts in that state) in which the NRA sought a declaratory judgment that Ollie North was not entitled to his legal expenses as a director of the NRA. Also suspended was Scott Christman who served as Cox's deputy chief of staff at the NRA-ILA. Both Cox and Christman are accused along with NRA Board member and former Congressman Dan Boren of participating in a failed "coup" attempt orchestrated by Ackerman McQueen and Ollie North. Cox vehemently denies this.
“The allegations against me are offensive and patently false,” Cox said. “For over 24 years I have been a loyal and effective leader in this organization. My efforts have always been focused on serving the members of the National Rifle Association, and I will continue to focus all of my energy on carrying out our core mission of defending the Second Amendment.”

The N.R.A. on Tuesday also severed all business with its estranged advertising firm, Ackerman McQueen, which operates NRATV, the N.R.A.’s live broadcasting media arm, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times. While NRATV may continue to air past content, its live broadcasting will end and its on-air personalities — Ackerman employees including Dana Loesch — will no longer be the public faces of the N.R.A. It remained unclear whether the N.R.A. might try to hire some of those employees, but there was no indication it was negotiating to do so.

Part of my public education was that the US didn't have a culture and other cultures were better.
Actually I probably had a few years of American culture taught in schools before that happened. But... I can almost remember the shift, I think it was around 4th grade. After that any positive American culture was learned from family.
And I don't regret getting my degree but I do regret my daughter getting hers. That's when she went off the rails.

You're in CA, so maybe it costs more, but that's expensive for cremation. They actually charge by pound. It costs me more to cremate dogs that I have had than it cost my sister to cremate an infant that passed.

My kid was upset today that kids at her day camp were taking about how Trump is putting them in danger. These are 6-8 year old who obviously have no clue about anything Trump does or doesn't do, but just parrot their idiot lib parents.
Liberals have destroyed every fucking thing imaginable. Even 6 and 7 year old kids now can't spend a day having fun at camp without politics infecting it.
This shit really pissed me off. And no the counsellors didn't have anything to do with it if you're wondering. It's apparently the kids on their own.

He would regale us with stories of pre-Castro Cuba.. he was a funny little guy..

I see similar info graphics on facebook from time to time as some kind of rallying cry to raise the minimum wage. As of the price of housing wouldnt just go up as well, and fewer people would have those jobs.
But the real question is why should the MINIMUM wage get you a MEDIAN house? That makes no sense. Who is going to live in a below average house? Or those don't exist in lake wobegone? Comparing a median wage to a median rent makes sense.

Don't get all the love for "Hurt" by J.C. I suppose it's poignant & all that, and perhaps a good capstone on an incredible life & career, but musically it doesn't do much for me.
All the kids these days think Disturbd's cover of "Sound of Silence" is the bee's knees, but I find it over-wrought. S&G's original is more powerful, without trying to be.
Hendrix's version of "Watchtower" is superior, IMHO, to Dylan's original. I think there may be consensus on that. But then I'm not a big Dylan fan.
Speaking of cover artists owning a song, Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" is the classic example. Are the countless other versions of that song covers of Buckley's version, or of Cohen's original? As a bonus, here's a nice version by Over The Rhine: https://youtu.be/sbZVzultvFs
"Turn the Page" by Metallica is about on par with Seeger's original.
Again, not a Dylan fan, but I will concede that Dylan's original "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is better than Guns 'n' Roses' cover.
Prefer Cowboy Junkies' cover of "Sweet Jane" to the Velvet Underground's.
Then there are the acts that do nothing but covers. Postmodern Jukebox puts unique spins on their covers, but to me it just seems gimmicky. Great displays of talent and ingenuity (with a little eye candy), but few of their songs would I consider listening to as music per se.
Anyway, that's my worthless opinion, for what it's not worth. Hope y'all are having a fine evening.

With that done, I was rid of all the unneeded steel on the underside of the old truck deck. I put some copper napthenate wood preservative in my little garden sprayer, and soaked down the underside of the planks.
Then I drilled a pair of 7/16" hole through the flanges of two of the steel channel cross-ribs, and the plank deck itself, and drove 7/16" bolts through the holes.
Then I used the tractor to flop it over. I bolted two short lengths of chain to the protruding bolts, laid the loader bucket down between the two chains, and chained up to them, using the grab hooks on the bucket and a length of chain with grab hooks.
I was then able to easily pick up the deck flat-wise with the loader bucket, and slowly drive it to where i will use it. It's now staged on the ground about 4 yards short of where it will be placed.
Then I did some shoveling and concrete-breaking to get the 6X6 that will hold up the door end of the ramp settled down into the ground about an inch so the sliding door of the shop will clear the ramp, and drove some pins into the ground to mark where I have to cut the sod to make a trench for the far end of the ramp to settle into, so its top is flush with the ground.
By that time, I was getting tired, and a T-storm was rumbling around, and it was commencing to rain, so I called it a day.
This time tomorrow, I should have a substantial access ramp to my other shop door.

That's correct. I wonder if the exact size is critical? I know it's essentially a thrust pivot under the vertical axis of a tone arm. Does the ball sit in a dimple on its underside, with a hard flat on the pivot above, or is it between two hard flats, with its sideways movement constrained by the bushing?
Dimple might forgive a slightly wrong size ball. Two hard flats, not so much.

One song that had covers that were really different was CSN's Wooden Ships. Jefferson Airplane did a version. But the version that really came out of nowhere was Ides of March's version; Ides of March is best known for 'Vehicle'. 'Wooden Ships' with a horn section.
Another good cover is Foghat's version of 'Honey Hush', originally by Big Joe Turner.

That ought to work with any ball close to 7/32, as long as it's not too big to fit in the well. A really small one might roll to one side, and not find the dimple, but +/- about 10 thou should not matter.
I remember having a really, really old RCA turntable, 1920's era, that used a ball thrust bearing like that under the cast-iron platter. As a kid, I could stand on it, and go round, at 78 RPM. Well, until I got bucked off. It was direct drive, with a synchronous clock-style motor employing a brass disc as a rotor, surrounded by massive coils.

WRT all the various state abortion laws being passed in anticipation of Roe being overturned.... I think the "unlimited abortion until birth" laws being passed in states like NY, IL, etc. are really bailout programs for an industry these states have deemed "too big to fail". Abortion rates have been dropping for years and numerous surgical abortion clinics have gone out of business long before the latest round of more restrictive laws in some states. There are many reasons for this but I suspect the #1 reason is that the Baby Boomer generation is now past childbearing age and there aren't as many women getting pregnant--either by design or by accident. Plus, surgical abortion is quickly being superseded by "morning after pills" and other measures that don't involve a trip to an abortuary. The surgical abortion industry is actually dying out and this recent push to promote it as a good thing is just a desperate attempt to prop it up as long as possible....

Had I not dealt with customers on a face-to-face basis for nearly sixteen years, I might have taken-up the "opportunities" presented by my Brother and one of my Best Friends in that industry.
The industry is bought-and-sold all the time and Management is treated like waste.
My stomach is sick for my Brother's situation this morning, as it directly relates to my own mental health. Without that "kid" relieving me once-a-week and helping with doctors appointments, I would fold.

Can you give a good reason why a 45-year-old who got his greed ramped up by cable TV "house-flipping" shows should be able to walk away from his unsustainable debt, while an 18 year old who was indoctrinated from birth by his parents, teachers, and every other authority figure that he HAD to have a college education shouldn't?

While I wouldn't support outright forgiveness of student loans, I would support making them dischargeable in bankruptcy, the same as every other loan (including other government loans, such as VA, FHA, and SBA loans).
