What really is going on is that Trump is currently negotiating a bi-lateral trade agreement with Japan (#1 economy and the #3 economy on the planet). At the same time, Trump is positioning with China and NK in both trade and nuclear disarmament. Both of these issues effect Japan immensely and both tie into the security of Japan militarily and economically.
In short, timing is everything. You get a better deal if the cards fall in the proper order. There's nothing wrong with getting a few ancillary items squared away before the big cards fall. Which is what he's doing.

Just for context, we forget that except for the US and a few other large nations that have managed to develop and maintain truly professional armies, that's a pretty good description of every army that does exist in the world, or that has ever existed in the world. For many countries, the Army is where murderess and thieves and rapists on the run go to hide out for awhile. Let's call it what it is -- the white / mestizo ruling and middle class are more than happy for the mostly indigenous lower class to leave. They have huge issues in a lot of the indigenous communities with incredibly high illiteracy rates, where people speak their tribal language, can barely speak / read or write in spanish (much less english), have low education rates, and dis-proportionally draw on their limited public welfare programs.

We've never really needed Middle eastern oil. We have always* (usually, there are ups and downs in outputs) had enough for our usage in our neighborhood, between Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, and of course, ourselves.
We just took over the middle east problem at some point (cough Suez Canal Crisis cough) and decided it was our place in the world to keep the worlds oceans safe and navigable after WWII when the British threw in the towel on that role.

Just ask the Mormon church for some of their hygiene kits they make for third world countries. Do you know how many church activities I've been to where we assemble those pro bono? About ten years ago, I knew a guy who came here legally (actual asylum, went through the process, etc.)
His problem was that the Army fell into arrears on pay, and his unit leadership decided to start doing Cartel work. The guys who weren't down with that up and deserted to the US.
So I think it's pretty fluid. And I can't imagine it's anything but worse today.

The kid (23 yrs old I think), driving a 3/4 ton truck with a good sized gooseneck trailer crosses the center line colliding with a line of motorcycles riding in staggered formation. Wipes out the bikes riding on the outside - hitting 10 bikes, killing 7 people.MA and NH state police go to arrest him for negligent homicide and they find what they believe to be packets of heroin at his house. Then we learn he had a DWI a few months ago and a less than stellar driving record prior to that.One of the two women killed was in early 40s, lost her 4yr old son to cancer 10yrs ago, her husband to cancer a couple years after that. Was just getting life back together. Just started dating a guy whose bike she was a passenger of.

In other, long ago forums, I remember commenting and discussing this issue. What always came up was the strength at the time of the Pro-Arabists, who believed the US could block the USSR by cementing very strong ties with the Arab World. They were behind the very strong alliance with Pakistan, which basically drove India into the USSR's sphere for 40 years. (India originally tried to make alliance with America in the 50's, Ike's State Department blew them off and decided to arm Pakistan instead)
It also was an extremely anti-Israel State Dep't, always seeking to undercut them. Probably the real reason why the Liberty got "accidentally" blown up at the start of the 6 day war. They had good reason to believe we'd call up the Egyptians and tell them that a surprise attack was on the way.

Yeah, but we didn't know that at the time. Recall that this was the time of the Bandung Conference, and many thought that the Third World was up for grabs.
Also, a lot of people - including most notably the Soviets - had thought Israel was going to go Red because Jews and socialism and all that. That's why the USSR did not block independence for Israel in the Security Council.
So I imagine the reasoning was that if Israel could be pulled out of the Soviet orbit, maybe some other countries could be, too.
But a rank showing of imperialism - as in Suez, or France in Indochina - undercut those efforts by hitting a sore point with the "non-aligned nations."
(To the commenter above: there is no Fourth World. The First World was the developed countries, the Second World was the Communist countries, the Third World was everything else.)

Way way back in the day, some buddies of mine decided it would be a great idea to drink their way through Mexico.
They thoroughly cleaned the car before leaving, knowing full well that getting busted in Mexico for drugs was a bad thing.
On the border, their car was torn apart by the border guards and the guards found a bit of a roach they'd missed in a back seat ash tray.
The Mordita? Cops wanted $80 and my buddies talked them down to $40, I think it was. Both hilarious and appalling at the same time.

Sooo many people from the bottom to the top in Mexico are on the cartels payroll that it's really hard to get anything done, or know who to trust.
Short of sending US troops in, I don't know how much we can really do from our side of the border, to be honest.

Our friends lived in Mexico City for a while (husband was transferred there by an American company) and they knew to take lots of cash with them wherever they went because if they were stopped by police, their only option was to bribe them. Or else they could go to a Mexican jail for some trumped-up charge.

Yeah, the crystal ball was not working well back in the 1950s.
It actually wasn't such a bad decision at the time. We were at daggers draw with Red China, India was halfway in the bag with the USSR, and we wanted a counterbalance geopolitically. Pakistan at the juncture was the most pro-American of the countries in the region (Iran had almost gone commie under Mossadegh, until he was overthrown in a coup by the CIA and MI6, so Iran was a question mark politically).
Also, at that time, radical Islam was not the thing it has become since. So looking to Pakistan as a counterweight, while not ideal, was not a ludicrous thing to do.

Ehhh... it's more than that. North Indians are Persian by blood (well, mixed), and the Persians (who renamed their country "Iran" which is Farsi for "Aryan") were precursors to the Nordics, and, idk -- somehow in the Nazi racial theory, India was superior to most other people.
