Throughout his career, the painter fashioned himself as a brash, profane, and hard-drinking antagonist to New York’s genteel art-world establishment. Beaten to death in the wake of a speakeasy argument is a worthy epitaph.
I was hoping for killed by jealous husbands, but I'm aging out of that. I like the painting. I like the colors. I like the fact that it's boats, because boats are awesome. It's weird that they're all pontooned together. The only way to get to your boat is to step over five others. And if you leave then there's a gap. So it must be some sort of party, an organized event where we're all going to raft up together. It's the kind of day that could end with girls taking their shirts off. Posted by: Captain Hate at June 24, 2019 09:40 AM (y7DUB) It's interesting how many works in museum collections never see the light of day... for various reasons. Usually a museum will keep specific works on a regular rotation. These are the one that give the museum prestige or are guest favorites. Some stay in storage forever because they are so delicate that just bringing them out would damage them. And some just aren't good enough to be shown but were donated by a major patron's great uncle on their mom's cousin's side so they can't get rid of them. It's not actually required that all corgis run to the art thread when it goes up. But whoever stays behind will have a small audience. Which is why, annoying as it may be, we bring forward discussions from previous threads. Like this which I posted last thread: Ardbeg Jun22 ONT#412: So it turns out the story of the crazy lady accusing Trump of rape is a subplot from a 2012 episode of Law and Order SVU, right down to the name of the store: https://transcripts.foreverdreaming.org/viewtopic.php?f=421&t=21659 Posted by: mindful webworker - click for short and tall tales at June 24, 2019 10:01 AM (/IMJl) 111

I had no idea of the range of art work there. The Asian wing was marvelous. I was pleasantly surprised by a set of very early Christian sculptures. I had no idea they were in Cleveland and they were featured in a tour. I was stunned. I had only ever seen them in textbooks. They're spectacular and bigger than I thought. So, I saw a bullfight in Spain, and I unabashedly and non-ironically loved it.
The pageantry of the spectacle. The terrifying reality of a bull at full speed. The physical reality of several men weakening the beast until one man faces it alone in order to stab it in the heart through the back. The actual danger on display. When I usually think of "culture", it's usually about what kind of new spices to put on chicken or what kind of music or dance people do. It's so similar to what I experience that to see a sport so fundamentally different from what I'm used to was amazing. This wasn't men going against each other to see who was stronger. This wasn't one man going up against inanimate nature. This was a man up against a living creature with the very real danger of goring and death (I thought a horse had died at one point). Dolley hates me for enjoying it, but she didn't even go. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Read some Movie Thoughts and Pre-Order Crystal Embers Today! at June 24, 2019 10:16 AM (9cans) 171

Here is a copy of the felony complaint I sent the FBI about MacAleenan:
"I submit the following criminal complaint in compliance with my 18 U.S. Code 1 obligation to report federal felonies to appropriate law enforcement personnel. It was reported in the Washington Examiner on Saturday June 22, 2019 that two former and three current administration officials told the Examiner that Acting DHS Secretary Kevin MacAleenan was the source of the leak in the Washington Post on Friday, June 21, 2019, about the ICE enforcement raid scheduled for Sunday, June 23, 2019 to deport illegal aliens who had been denied sanctuary in the United States. The Examiner story pointed out that very few people were aware of the details of the raid, and that Secretary MacAleenan had traveled on an airplane with the author of the Washington Post leak on Wednesday June 19, 2019. The Examiner story pointed out that the Washington Post leak placed law enforcement personnel at risk, and that Secretary MacAleenan had argued vehemently, behind closed doors, against the scheduled enforcement raid. If the Examiner story is true, it would mean that besides the laws against leaking law enforcement raid information, that Secretary MacAleenan also violated 18 U.S. Code 1324 (A)(iii): "Any person who - ... (iii) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation;" Which carries a penalty of five years in federal prison for each count of violation. Since the scheduled raid expected to round up two thousand illegal Aliens, the potential criminal sentence for Secretary MacAleenan, the author of the Washington Post article - Nick Miroff, and the editors of the Washington Post [for conspiracy to violate 18 U.S. Code 1324 (A)(iii)] comes to ten thousand years in prison. Wasn't that a neat experience? I was mildly skeptical before going to see it, figuring it attracted dumbasses and cocksuckers, but everyone was so happy there it even won me over. Plus while I was waiting, one of the volunteers worked in a local craft brewery so we had a nice conversation. Posted by: Captain Hate at June 24, 2019 10:22 AM (y7DUB) 189

Hi Dunc -
Trip was great, finger is healing, no Vol. II as of this time. Also, I go back to the eye doctor late this afternoon to see what's what with my corneal ulcer. The museum has had a series of inspired directors that have done excellent balancing acts of adhering to the timeless beauty of art while not triggering the usual suspects. I know the musical director and he does a superb job of presenting cutting edge talent. Posted by: Captain Hate at June 24, 2019 10:15 AM (y7DUB) That is such a delicate balancing act. Our local gallery sold off all its works more than 300 years old to focus on Modernism/PostModernism almost exclusively. It caused quite the ruckus around here. Saw one of the works at the Met about a year later. So at least their going to good places. I believe Cleveland got a beautiful Gandharan Buddha. Posted by: Kris at June 24, 2019 10:23 AM (OyyDO) 195

Captain, it really was. I had seem a couple of them before at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh - they aren't all winners, but the ones that work really work. Only downside is with the crowds you only get 30 to 45 seconds inside of them - some of them would be great to just sit and relax in for 5 or 10 minutes.

Looks like Woodstock 50 is an unmitigated mess. One investor pulled out and took his $18 million with him. When they missed the final payment for the Watkins Glen racetrack venue, the raceway pulled out leaving them with no site. Now, they can't sell tickets. Meanwhile, there is another event at the original Bethel Woods location (not called "Woodstock" for legal reasons) featuring Ringo Starr, John Fogerty and Santana. Incidentally, Fogerty and Santana were slated to also play at Woodstock 50.

One more thing about the Cleveland museum. When my Hatettes were young tykes, Mrs H enrolled them in Saturday classes there which was a bargain just from a materials standpoint. Since the museum is off the beaten path with Case Western surrounding part of it, they offered classes for adults. One of the instructors, Barbara Kraska I think was her name, was earthily outstanding in urging people to get as close as possible to paintings to figure out how they did what they did in the Impressionist room. Plus she gave entertaining. Recently I ran across a folder of the work I did in the attic and was impressed by how, good isn't the right word, non inept it was.

Not easy, because you DO want what you THOUGHT you had. Both daughter and the unmarried son have had their respective sweeties dump them this Spring. The "you're lucky, that person was crazy (especially to dump you)" reality does not immediately ameliorate the "I thought we had something real going on" hurt. TSA can be very confusing...At ORD I got in the wrong line and ended up going through the regular line with my suitcase, and carry on. (I have pre -check). It all went through even though stuff in my almost checked bag went through with stuff that shouldn't be in it. It was Sunday later pm and the line was long. They were yelling at everyone to keep moving. But I got through, and did a gate check for the bag. Never happen at a smaller airport with far less hassle.

And the gunner said, "Ay, ay," but the seamen made reply: "We have children, we have wives, And the Lord hath spared our lives. A few points about filing a felony complaint with the FBI:
1. 18 U.S. Code 1 requires any person having knowledge of the commission of a federal felony to report it to federal law enforcement. It does not say anything about how you came to have that knowledge - but it is a federal felony for you to fail to report your knowledge. 2. When you file a complaint with federal law enforcement the rest of the process is secret - even were you to ask the FBI about the progress of your complaint - they won't tell you anything. The case only becomes public at the point of an unsealed Grand Jury indictment or of an arrest as a result of a sealed indictment. 3. The FBI is required by law to investigate good faith complaints. 4. The problem is not the FBI - so much as it is the U.S. Attorneys - who aren't prosecuting obvious felonies that a first year law student would win against Perry Mason for the defense. I have to weigh in on the latest Trump accuser. Anyone in the Manhattan fashion/magazine industry could look at that picture and label the time of year and the year. Every woman in that industry wears black all the time, but in late spring it would be linen and sheer stockings. That coat was fall. And anyone who chooses to be pictured in a Donna Karan coat is wearing one from the current collection, and will know exactly what year that collection was.

Maybe Palp hasn't posted in forever because he told a recount of his accident that included shattering both legs, yet was able to hold the "illegal" that hit him at gun point until the police arrived. Then, rather than being arrested for pointing a gun at the presumed illegal ( how would he know the person was an illegal?) he said that he had a great bonding experience with the cop at the accident scene over the make/model of his fire arm.
A great story, though. Posted by: slowdown at June 24, 2019 11:01 AM (E+yET) 374

We took our 2007 Volvo XC90 up through east Texas on 92 octane premium gas. The 200 mile trip revealed gas mileage of 19.25 mpg. Gassed up at a marina that sold ethanol free regular 87 octane and on the trip back home we got 23.5 mpg. That's a 22% increase with lower octane. The Cleveland Museum general collection is always free admission. Only (expensive) traveling exhibitions carry a charge. A fantastic gift.
The other thing I like about this museum is the broad collection, because you can grab a little exposure to many areas of art, many people like the depth of the Asian and sculpture collections. The museum even has a beautiful Sargent they bought in the last year or two and a couple of Turners. You know, if you like that sort of thing.
