The Chess Players - Theo Michael.jpg
The Chess Players
Theo Michael

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

And TheJamesMadison's movie thread will be up later up this evening.

Pic Note

This artist likes the "noir" theme (i.e. guys wearing fedoras) and it shows in a lot of his paintings you can look at on his site.

Easier Problem - White To Play (999)

Goal: White can either force a quick mate or win Black's queen
Hint: The protection given by Black's f7 pawn is mostly illusory

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190615 - Problem 1.jpg
r1b2r2/1q2Qpkp/pp3np1/3p4/3N4/4P3/P3BPPP/R4RK1 w - - 0 1

1.Ne6+ Bxe6

Pretty much forced. If 1...Kh6 or 1...Kg8 then 2.Qxf8#

2.Qxb7 for the win.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190615 - Problem 2.jpg
2kr1r2/p6p/5Pp1/2pP4/1qp2Q1P/7R/PP6/1KR5 w - - 0 1

There are a couple of ways White can win:.

1.Rxc4 Qb6
2.Rb3 Rxd5
3.Rxb6 axb6
4.Qe4 Rfd8
5.f7 Rd1+
6.Kc2 R1d6
7.f8=Q Rxf8
8.Qa8+ Kc7
9.Qxf8 and wins

The second line, which looks kind of like the 1st, starts with

1.Rb3! 1... Qb6 (1...Qa4 2. Rb8+ Kd7 3. Rb7+ Ke8 (3... Kc8 4. Qc7#) 4. Re7#)
(1... cxb3 2. Qxb4 Rxd5)

2.Rxc4 Rxd5
3.Rxb6 axb6
4.Qe4 Rfd8
5.f7 Kc7
6.f8=Q Rxf8
7.Qxd5 Rd8
8.Qe5+

This is the move my app likes, but 8.Qxd8 Kxd8 9.Rf4 is my preferred simplification. Black has no weapons or threats left.

8...Kc6
9.Qe4+ Kc7
10.Kc2 Rd7
11.Ra4 Rd4
12.Qe7+ Kc6
13.Qe6+ Kb7
14.Rxd4 cxd4
15.Qd7+ and wins.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

On the week's busiest shopping day, Target customers are having trouble making purchases.

The problem is reported to be a nationwide register outage.

In a tweet, Target reported that "guests are currently unable to make purchases at Target stores. Our teams are troubleshooting now."

Coinciding with Pride Month, the Discovery Family cartoon series "My Little Pony" has introduced a same-sex couple on the show for the first time.

Activists took to the streets Saturday to hold rallies calling for the impeachment of President Trump, as they seek to pile further pressure on Democratic leaders in Congress to back a push to oust the president.

While protests were being eyed across the country, California seemed to be the main state for the demonstration. The Mercury News reported that more than 140 rallies were expected through Southern California.

A Seattleite in Orlando, in mid-June. I did that once for work. Last minute, boss said that I had to be there the next day, and I found out about 3pm Seattle time. Only suit cleaned and acceptable was a wool suit.

The hotel and rental car were air conditioned, but the parking lot and walk to the client's office were not. It was about 8:15 am and when I arrived, my contact, the senior manager, laughed at me, pointed me to the men's room to clean up before starting, and said not to put on my suit jacket, just do the presentation in my shirt and tie.

Yes, I closed that damned deal. I can still remember the lawn sprinklers watering the grass of the building as I got out of the car, making the parking lot area essentially a sauna. I openly cursed my formerly favorite suit.

52 It just occurred to me, what does "reservoir dogs" mean in Reservoir Dogs?
Posted by: Bandersnatch

Nothing apparently.

Per IMBD:

The title for the film came to Quentin Tarantino via a patron at the now-famous Video Archives. While working there, Tarantino would often recommend little-known titles to customers, and when he suggested Louis Malle's Au Revoir les Enfants (1987), the patron mockingly replied, "I don't want to see no reservoir dogs!" The title is never spoken in the film, however.

84 Problem 2: After 1. Rb3 black has a choice of bad options.
Perhaps best is the QxR trade 1. ... Qxb3 though that won't stop the bleeding for long

If 1... cxb3, 2. Qxb4 loses the Queen outright because black's pawn at c5 is now pinned.

If 1. ... Qa4 or Qa5, then 2. Qb8+ Kd7, 3 Rb7+ sets up a king chase that quickly leads to mate.

Other black Q moves on move 1 lead to immediate capture

A lot has happened in the last few weeks. Yesterday morning I got targeted radiation treatment on the tumor they found in my brain a couple weeks ago, using a robotic device called CyberKnife.

I lay on a table and it moved around, lobbing photon torpedoes at the tumor from different angles. I couldn't see it though, as I had to wear a plastic mask to keep my head still.

The doctor said it went well and thinks that single treatment should kill it. The only side effect I felt yesterday was fatigue, which they said was normal. I went to bed early last night, got a good night's sleep, and woke up today feeling fine, and just finished mowing the lawn with no issues.

Some locales aren't allowing ANY straws. There was a boba tea place up in San Francisco that backed that city's straw ban. Boba tea requires straws to drink properly, but the place had already made arrangements to switch over to edible straws. Unfortunately, it was only after the ban went into effect that the tea place discovered that San Francisco's ban covered *all* straws, and not just plastic ones.

-

Could you imagine what they'd do if they found out trash services in the hinterlands don't give a sh*t about recycling, straws, or whether you mixed your paper with your plastic in the big black garbage bags of trash you take to the dump?

See all those red states? Everyone outside of the cities doesn't give a sh*t because they know no one is paying them for the garbage.

279 Seems like 1. Rxc4 allows more counterplay by black after 1. ... Qa5 than does 1. Rb3, which, as noted, opens up 2. Qb8+ after 1. ... Qa5.

For instance, 1. Rxc4 Qa5, 2. Ra3 Qb6, 3. Rb4 Rxf6 (or 3 Rc3 Rxd5). White still has a very strong position, or course, but black is at least having the prospect of getting one or both rooks into play.
