The best menus account for the psychological theory known as the “paradox of choice,” which says that the more options we have, the more anxiety we feel. The golden number? Someone here (and I can't remember who) posted that he had asked his kids to write him a letter every Father's Day, and he kept copies of them all and read the old ones on Father's Day.
I thought this was such a neat idea, I told my son and daughter in law about this today. They said they had a similar, more high tech plan. They had created a GMail account for each of their two sons and sent them notes and photos of key events as they were growing up. At some point, they will give the sons "their" passwords and they will be able to go back and see an overview of the highlights of their young lives. I basically like the idea, but I decided to not get into the Goolag monitoring of all emails today.

Flat on my back w/lower back pain. Been bugging me all week since my backpacking trip last week; thought it was getting better then just today it really kicked in. Don't think it was the backpacking that did it, but rather the drive home.
Instapundit had an Amazon link today for a TENS device. Anyone have experience using those for back pain?

I've been having some weird knee issues that are actually some sort of muscle issue rather than a bone issue. A friend in the medical field recommended a 70% solution of DMSO and it's amazing. It's the only thing that makes it feel better.

I'm not sure how this works since the students don't owe the debt to the government. I guess the government just tells the creditors to "fuck off" on behalf of the loser students.

My son loves his dad so much. He knows what a good man he is. And it is actually his stepfather. His biological dad died before he was born. My husband and I started going out when the boy was 6 weeks old and we married when he was 6 months. I often joke that he only married me to get the boy.
In 39 years, my husband never said "Do something about your son", I never said "Leave him alone, he's not yours", and our son never said "You're not my real Dad."
And someday, the boy's "real" dad is gonna be saying to my husband "Thank you for taking such good care of my son."

A lot of this are people who went to college, got some sort of "progressive" degree, and think that they deserve a lot more money and a lot more power than they have. Just look at all these peasants who make a lot more money than they do, despite the fact that they have never read Foucault.
You're working in a miserable job for a miserable salary at a "progressive" nonprofit, and you think: "I have a masters degree in sociology! I deserve a lot more than this!" Bonus points if you have $100,000 in student loans outstanding.
They support socialism, because they think that they will get a lot more money and power if they government runs everything than under the current system.
They're probably right.

I don't think you are using envy in its true sense. You are jealous of people who fish more than once a week, maybe. You don't envy them.
My definitions are pretty simple:
Greed is an insatiable desire for something. Not necessarily bad, often leading to good outcomes.
Envy is wanting what someone has - specifically. Not wanting to be like them (to work towards that) but wanting their shit and their life without having to do anything for it ... just because you think you should have it, or even worse, just not wanting them to have it. Someone who is envious of another's house might very well just burn down their house since, "If I can't have it, neither can you." That is the very foundation of socialism.
Jealousy is feeling bad towards someone because they have something you want for yourself, but not wanting to take it from them, just being pissed that they have it and you don't.
Socialism is pure envy. Socialism has nothing to do with greed, at all. For those in power, socialism is about total control of the masses and everything in society - which is very intoxicating stuff for most douchebags and assholes.

Cairo just arrived Friday evening from Ohio. He is about seven years old, weighs 3 or 4 pounds, and is all black with huge green eyes. I accidentally called him "Oscar" a few times and he didn't complain so... he might be Oscar now. I don't know. It just seemed like his name.
Lydia is a fifty pound brown tabby marshmallow with ears who just wants to bury her nose in that sweet sweet catbutt, if Oscar weren't so stressed by circumstances and not receptive to having his personal space invaded right now. She tries to greet him, gets hissed at, and makes confused pathetic little mrrping sounds because she's not sure what to do.
It's an evolving situation.

Random subject - I finished season 3 of The Grand Tour today. Last episode had an announcement that the show would not be continuing in its current format as a studio show, but would be periodic road trip specials.
Bummer. I enjoyed watching the guys away from the BBC shackles.

Thanks. Full resolution is much more so, of course. That view was a wonderful payoff after 10+ miles of hiking (split into two legs because we got a late start on day one).
Thanks for the pain advice. Unfortunately our 3 year old, $2K refrigerator is out of commission so we took all non-perishable items out of the garage freezer to make room for the stuff from the useless fridge. I should be able to squeeze a cold pack back in there but it'll be a few hours before it's frozen...

My wife's pop had Alzheimer's. He passed away a decade ago. Some of the symptoms seem similar, but there are also stark differences. Brain ailments, for obvious reasons, can be wildly different.
Best I can do is visit often, and hug him hard.

I read about a German rapid hole digger used in WW2. Source: Rockets, Missiles and Space Travel by Willy Ley, a 1960s edition I think.
The purpose was to dig holes for a particular type if antitank mine. A sharpened metal rod about an inch in diameter would be stuck in the ground vertically. A small short-duration high-thrust rocket mounted on top would drive the rod into the ground. A length of prima-cord would be detonated in the hole made by the rod, resulting in a cylindrical hole about 10 inches in diameter. Sounds like a post hole digger to me.

Thanks BZ. That's what I'm hoping. The TENS Insty linked to is less than $30 so I might as well give it a try. I did have TENS done, as part of physical therapy, before my surgeries. But there's nothing TENS or PT is going to do for you when the nucleus pulppsus is extruded from you disk like thick toothpaste and wraps itself around your sciatic nerve.

I did that too. I bought a case each of 60, 75, and 100 watt bulbs.

Thanks BZ. That's what I'm hoping. The TENS Insty linked to is less than $30 so I might as well give it a try. I did have TENS done, as part of physical therapy, before my surgeries. But there's nothing TENS or PT is going to do for you when the nucleus pulppsus is extruded from you disk like thick toothpaste and wraps itself around your sciatic nerve.
Actually, PT and TENS will help. They won't fix the underlying problem, but they'll help keep you functional until it's time for surgery. I have the same thing as you do in both my neck and back. I'd rather have surgery, but in the mean time, they do help. They just aren't a cure all. But, they do help.

I got interested in "envy" vs "jealousy" and looked it up. The two ring very different to my ears. It turns out, in modern usage, the former is morphing into the latter, sort of like "infer" vs "imply". And that drives me crazy.
Anyway, "envy" means one resents, begrudges something of another. One wants it for oneself and despises the other for having it. That is envy.
Here's what "Modern American Usage" by Garner says:

Jealousy is properly restricted to contexts involving emotional rivalry; envy is used more broadly of resentful contemplation of a more fortunate person.

Admiring what another has and wanting something similar for oneself is not envy. Envy is resenting and begrudging that person for having it.

I'll tell you what wi'll cure your back problems real freaking quick break your f****** ankle! The pain from that will override the pain from your back issues promise happened to me. And before that I discussed pain with one of the docs and he said there is actually a scientific proven Theory that's the nerves are overridden by the most pain and others are in a gated. I've never heard that until I brought it up to him curious if any of you others have heard that.

They didn't help for me. That was 20 years ago. Nucleus pulposus is very irritating to nerves, apparently. I could not function, period. Surgery was the only option, and it worked miracles. Second time, 10 years ago, it was "only" a herniated disc, not ruptured lke the first time. (BTW first was L4/L5, second was L5/S1). That time, actually, PT provided some pain relief - not much - but doc decided to do surgery after first PT session b/c I started to have paralysis in my toes & didn't want to risk permanent nerve damage. That time surgery was minimally invasive and again, miraculous. Pain was gone immediately, but it took a few months for the paralysis to go away.

It's a shame because even the LEDs in the cheap ones would last for years and years if they didn't try to push so much current through them to get that last lumen of light. If you run any of these LEDs at 85% capacity they will basically burn forever.
I would note that incandescents running on DC can burn for years and years (decades) too.
I would say that I've had generally good experiences with the LEDs I have, so far (though it's only been a few years so we're not even close to the time required to really know). The only bulbs that I had serious problems with were some little ceiling light halogen replacements that burnt out pretty quickly.
Now, the halogens I had in there used to burn out quickly, too, and I think there was a problem with the fixture ... but still, the LEDs disappointed me, there. But it turned out that the LEDs I bought were actually guaranteed and I wrote the company and they sent me out a new 4-pack.

Did have a great time. But the water was high and cold from the snow melt so I only fished for about 1/2 hour before giving up. Someone willing to plumb the depths with a nymph and split shot might have found some fish but I don't swing that way.
Discovered our sleeping pads weren't up to the task so after the second night we decided to bug out one day early. Will definitely be backpacking again but will be equipped with better sleeping pads, less food, and less stuff in general (my pack was ~40#, son's was 25-30). But the ribeye steaks and cold beers on the first night were worth the extra weight.
I mentioned here before the trip that this was my first backpacking experience in ~30 years, and my son's first ever (he's 19). Looking forward to many more.

One of the interesting things about the Green New Deal is that the masks are coming off - earlier, environmental rhetoric claimed that, although that you'll have to make a few changes to your lifestyle, your standard of living would improve: You'll get to bike to work! You'll be able to walk to the store! You'll live in a vibrant urban neighborhood, instead of a soulless dehumanizing suburb!
Now, they are increasingly admitting that you're going to be a lot poorer - unless you are in the nomenklatura, you'll never fly in a plane again. You'll never own a car again. You might be able to eat meat once in awhile on special occasions, but otherwise you won't be able to afford it. You'll have to live in a small apartment within walking distance of a mass transit stop, because that is the only way to get around, other than a bicycle.
The idea that a Somali village is some sort of ecological model that we should be emulating is absurd, and should be terrifying anyone who would like to keep a First World lifestyle.
And remember, a Democratic US Senator and Representative were sitting there listening to this, doubtless nodding along as this guy talked.

Not a trick elbow, but I overdid it and have a touch of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). Last time it was the left elbow and it took over a year to clear up. This time isn't nearly as bad, but I won't put any strain on it until it's better.
