frankie (5).jpg

(Frankie)

Been lurking since the early days... occasional poster... I'm Sapguy from Dallas.

Everyone knows that the kids always suffer the most in a divorce. Well below is my beloved Finnie who is now with my ex-wife. She is a 12 year old Nova Scotia duck toller mix and a better dog doesn't exist. She lives on the other side of the Country and so I only get pictures of her now and then. I miss throwing the ball for her terribly. She never met a pizza crust she didn't love or a squirrel that she didn't want to catch. I can't think about her without tears...

I couldn't take the silence without her so I found a friend to help me get by. This is Frankie, a miniature Aussie. He loves to play fetch as much as Finnie did, and keeps a constant eye on my every move. Every night he has to get some pets before he will lay down at the foot of the bed... he gives me joy just by being around. God gave us dogs so that we had role models.

Gorgeous animals Sapguy> It's a bummer that you lost custody of Finnie, but Frankie appears to be a special pup.

Thumper and Snowball.jpg

Greetings WF Pet Thread,

You have featured my personal pets, but I thought I would share my work pets: Thumper and Snowball. I work running a school at a residential treatment center for abused boys. About 3 years ago we were trying to decide on a therapy pet for the facility to be used in treatment with the boys. Two years ago our CEO came in one day with 3 baby rabbits - sadly Gizmo, the third bunny, died last year. They were not being used for therapy at all, so we decided to use them to teach the boys job skills. The boys apply for a Bunny Caretaker position, interview, and train to take care of them at night and on weekends. In the past year since my best friend and fellow bunny lover retired, they have become my bunny boys and I have too much fun with them throughout the work week. They are sweet, funny, and loving little fluff balls who just celebrated their 2nd birthday this year on Easter Sunday so they are real Easter Bunnies! Thanks for the Pet Thread - love it as always! - Cindi T.

Not only are they cute and cuddly pets they are also Feel Good Stories. What an awesome idea for the pets and the young men. Thanks so much for sharing!

MH, This is Gunner. 6 year old yellow lab. My youngest son is a hunting enthusiast. He saved up his money to buy Gunner when he was 16. He then trained him to become a push button pheasant-grouse-waterfowl hunting dog as well as a super house dog. I'm really proud of him for how Gunner turned out. Gunner lives with us as his Dad is a senior at university.

Gunner was a little out of sorts last week so we took him in for an exam and blood work. We were thinking Lymes again. We got the news yesterday that it was a super aggressive form of acute Leukemia. Not treatable by chemo. Dogs with this diagnosis typically live days to a few weeks.

My son is coming home Friday and we will put Gunner out of his pain Saturday at 11 am. Our hearts are broken and we will miss him terribly. We will all hold him as he passes. Until then, Gunner always has a person snuggling him or giving him treats.

I'm not sure this is pet thread material or not. It's a downer. But if you want to use it, this is an experience we all share in some way, shape, or form. I mentioned this in comments and there was a cathartic response from several people who went through this sort of thing. Up to you my friend.-Maud'dib

Yeah, it's a downer. But we are pet lovers. And we understand the pain and heartbreak one goes through in these circumstances. Nothing wrong with venting we are the Moron Horde, that's what we are for.

Long time Lurker here. Some months ago I sent you a picture of my black cap conure Hugo Whistler. This is Bronwyn our beautiful Senegal. She was a shy and quiet lady. Hugo is the rowdy one. She was pretty much a one person bird — that person being me. She used to ride on my shoulder while I cooked. But slowly she began to just stay in her cage and only occasionally come out. The short story is that it turned out she had epilepsy. We took her to Cornell where they have a fabulous veterinary school. We got medicine for her and spent a year and a half giving her her medicine and a very nice life. I sat with her on her last day, wanting to be with her when she died. But, she refused to go until I left the room. She’s buried in the garden and there’s a plaque there to commemorate her. It’s very hard losing a companion bird. But she gave us lots of love and lots of joy.

What a colorful and beautiful bird. She had wonderful people taking care of her up to the end. Pets they give so much and expect so little in return. Condolences on your loss.

This photo is from several years back. I can't recall exactly when. I found this back half of a rabbit on top of the dry crap I serve the cats everyday. The one with her back to the camera put it there, apparently as a hint of what she'd prefer to find every morning. The grey cat minding his own business wasn't even tempted to steal the rabbit, as he knew that he'd get beat into the middle of next week if he touched his sister's kill. - Ingrate.

Well, we finally got our technical skills to match. Sorry it has taken so long to post your pet photo. Quite the brunch buffet there. Thanks for the submission.

19 I'm very sorry to hear about Gunner. He is beautiful. It's heartbreaking. I am dealing now with when to "pull the plug" on my 13 1/2 year old black lab. Absolutely gorgeous pure bred show dog (I never showed him) with two champion parents. Calmest, most affectionate dog ever. He has severe mobility problems now due to arthritis and throat inflammation which makes breathing difficult. He only gets up now to relieve himself (on our deck) or eat. His vet said as long as he is eating (he is), in not too much pain (he is on pain meds), and not actually pooping or peeing on himself (which she said would upset him greatly), we can just keep going, so that's our plan.

Posted by: Chris not rock at June 15, 2019 03:14 PM (WO0/g)

20 Our Rosie-cakes had to cross the bridge about a month ago. Her kidneys simply stopped, and she was, at long last, a nice skinny dog again, after a life of unmitigated chow-hounding as only a beagle can do. She is immortalized in the Horde Cookbook as the beagle who ate 6 pounds of cheese taters and pork chops after stealing it from the fridge. That included glass shards from the casserole dish she shattered in the process. She also opened the fridge and took a nice 8 lb fish that was marinating so I could smoke it. We would come home from where ever we had gone to find the fridge door open, a smear of grease on the floor, and Rosie looking like she ate a basketball. I personally find it remarkable she lived to be as old as she did, considering her proclivities.

Still, it was very sad when she passed. Life with Rosie-cakes was never boring.

34 Need help. Lily the beagle has once again started eating her own poop. She stopped for 3 years and has started up again. Only reason I can see is because we changed her food. She now is fed a duck blend with much higher protein then the crap Science Diet she had been getting. She has food allergies and we finally found a food that doesn't make her throw up.
We have a basket muzzle on her, actually 2 of them tie wrapped together so that she cannot reach her poop in the yard. We try to clean up after her immediately but do fail on occasion.
Anyone have this problem and have a solution? Due to her food allergies we are hesitant to try any of the additives that can be sprinkled on her food.

40 Amazing pet thread, as always.

Gunner is a beautiful dog. I am so sorry for you and your son Muad 'dib. We lost two dogs in the past three months, and it was awful. We are only now coming out of the depression from it.

Hug your dogs, feed your cats whatever they want, cook with your birds, because each day with them is precious.

As for poop eating, some dogs just do that. Just dog give them kisses when they come in from the yard, smacking their lips. Ask me how I know.

Posted by: Moki at June 15, 2019 03:40 PM (mFoNl)

41 "Man's best friend", in my opinion humanity's greatest accomplishment. Thousands of years of selective breeding creating a bewildering array of forms for countless purposes--even if just to be companions.

And somewhere along the line, I daresay they changed us. For the better.

61 Love the birdie story. Amazing how she waited for her mom to leave so she could move on to the beyond, sparing her mom the pain of watching her go.

I had three budgies, the first beautiful one I got I regretted almost instantly because I saw how morose he was being away from his flock. So I then acquired another beautifully feathered female bird, and when she joined him he perked right up.

Her name was Honey Bird, she passed away and I made a little casket for her and buried her in the animal friend plot at my boyfriend's house. Her beau eventually joined her there. I love birdies so so much but I can't stand to see them caged, that's why I won't get another one, not even the adorable little parrotlets.

He prefers house cat life, periodically going out to get high on the wild catnip that grows all over the farm. I hope he is capable of catching mice this winter, but I have my doubts. He had a severe panic reaction to a paper bag. Dumped here? The vets and shelters have no missing cat reports.

I've learned Jack's is a private club and somehow the Blues players ended up there from an invite of a local. The rookie got to playing "Gloria", went back to the locker room with the bright idea that it should be their fight song, and they went worst to first.

It's that daggone Philly magic, the Blues were sort of the "Rocky Balboa" of the NHL. I'm happy for them.

119 So back to the topic of this thread -

I had a black kitty like the one pictured on the Coffee thread. When she sat on my lap I used to draw her ears back with my hand so she got that crazy look like the kitteh on today's Coffee thread, except it was more extreme because her eyes got super almond-y and alien like. And I used to laugh my fool head off.

My poor kitteh put up with so much, like the time I fashioned a chastity belt for her from a pair of pantyhose that had a tear. I used the toe part, just cut a couple holes in the toe part and slid little kitten's legs through it. She was just a baby.

The panty house were bone colored lace and looked adorable against her black fur. I held her up to admire my handiwork, and laughed and laughed like a loon while the kitteh had this quizzical look like...wtf lady? and.."I have to depend on this lunatic for my upkeep??"

But she survived my antics and was with me for 17 years. Sometimes I dream of her still, it feels like she's still with me when I have those dreams. Can't wait to see her again in the beyond!

The last time we lost a dog, I forgot to give here chocolate, too. Still kick myself for that. But she did get a pound of bacon.

We are thinking of taking in a new one, a rescued pug-beagle mix. Question is if her issues are beyond what we can handle. But we'd love to a dog around our pile of sticks at Pooh Corner.

125 Not really a pet story, but it's animal related.

At work, I've recently been moved out of my plush cubicle with lots of desk space to a bull pen in a noisy warehouse where my desk area is now that of a postage stamp. Last week, I found that my drawer o' condiments was raided by a mouse as evidenced by chewed mayo packets and lots of little turds.

I ordered an itty bitty "Havahart" trap and picked it up today for a Monday afternoon deployment. I can dump the critters into some woods near by, though they'll probably find their way back.

That may be a bit overstated.

I've had so many pets, even spent $700.00 on vet care for a poor little box turtle I rescued. But now at my stage in life, I really don't want to commit to owning another creature due to having to clean their poop and then when they dies it's a nightmare of ongoing grief.

So there's pros and cons to owning pets.

Later, I found out that the guy two doors up from me had a friend who lived in Iowa. Iowa's pheasant season starts a week earlier than Nebraska's. The friend had given my neighbor some pheasant wings to use for training neighbor's young German Shorthair.

I only discovered this when neighbor was wondering what had happened to his dog's pheasant wings. Sheesh, I felt dumb for not dealing those wings had come from a pheasant rather than an endangered bird.

How ever did you come up with such an original name???

157 156 I saw a big black bear yesterday here at el-farmo and since I own the land I've decided he qualifies as a pet. Working name is WeaselBear.

Sorry I missed your comment. I was out mowing the backyard.

I don't know how much you need to catch up on. A lot has happened in the last few weeks. Yesterday morning I got targeted radiation treatment on the tumor they found in my brain a couple weeks ago, using a robotic device called CyberKnife.

I lay on a table and it moves around, lobbing photon torpedoes at the tumor from different angles. I couldn't see it though, as I had to wear a plastic mask to keep my head still.

The doctor said it went well and thinks that single treatment should kill it. The only side effect I felt yesterday was fatigue, which they said was normal. I went to bed early last night, got a good night's sleep, and woke up today feeling fine, and just finished mowing the lawn, as I said.

181 The back half of the rabbit was an offering given to you out of respect. You were supposed to eat it!! LOL.She placed it in the food bowl because that it where food goes.
We have 2 cats. One manx, the other, part manx. Very often find back halves of squirrels and gophers at the front door. Not sure why always the back half.
My wife always says, "Good Kitty" and then buries whatever was brought.

Emma is the black and white one. The other is Dusty. Neither is no long with us, unfortunately. Endless stories about those two. Dusty was never known to hunt anything bigger than a worm, when one Saturday morning, he took down a crow. The other crows shrieked and shrieked, absolutely freaking out. He just didn't come home one night last winter.

183 windbag: He just didn't come home one night last winter.

The hours I spent, arguing with the Almighty, after exhausting myself calling and looking for one of our furry friends who just didn't come home.

It's awful.

186 Muad'dib, I'm so sorry for your and your son's loss of Gunner. He was a beauty - may you always remember him as such.
Chris not rock - If you contact me at blackLabsmatterstore at geemail dot com I will send you one of my #BlackLabsMatter ballcaps, featuring my late Lab Duke's smiling mug... no charge. I am sorry you're faced with your Lab's inevitable trip over the bridge... may he go peacefully and find himself in Dog Heaven* pronto.

I've had to put down seven of the eight dogs who have owned me over the last 44 years (got first dog at 16), and it sucked every time. Duke was killed by a car in front of my house four summers ago, due to a dreadful mistake on my part, and I still miss him.

*Dog Heaven, where it's always 70* and sunny yet the mud puddles are full, the water bowls are always full and in the shade, milk bones grow on bushes, and all your old dogs are there having a ball...

190 Muad'dib, so sorry for you and your son. I had to say goodbye to my yorkie (Maggie) about 6 weeks ago, and I'm still busted up. As she passed away I held her close and whispered the names of all the pets I had that went before her: Bonnie, Mollie, Big, Nuke, Bert, Sprocket, Smudge, Peach, Daisy, Owen. I told her she was going to be in good company. I always had a houseful and there were always other pets to share the grief....except for Maggie. Damn, it's really tough. Looking for a rescue next week.

191 I know exactly how much Gunner has enriched your lives and how much you will miss him. He looks just like my lab of 13 years, Buddy. He's a good boy and not long for this world either.
