Ilhan Omar Filed Taxes Jointly With a Man Who Was Not Her Husband, While Legally Married to Another Man

The Washington Examiner:A report released by the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board shows that Rep. Ilhan Omar broke federal tax law by filing her taxes jointly with a man to whom she was not legally married. The Thursday report found that Omar filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 with Ahmed Hirsi, her current husband, whom she did not legally marry until 2018. The Minnesota Democrat had originally married Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002, but the couple separated in 2008. Omar then legally married another man, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009. The two divorced according to their faith tradition in 2011, but Omar did not legally end the divorce until 2017.
Omar got back together with Hirsi, her first husband, in 2012 but they were not legally married and eligible to file taxes together until 2018. The finding by the Minnesota Campaign Board means Omar tax returns were in violation of federal law.

Since she was first elected to public office in November 2016, Ilhan Omar has rarely avoided the opportunity to talk for public consumption. We happened upon an exception to the rule back in 2016 in the course of Omar’s campaign for the Minnesota legislature when we learned of Omar's then current marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. At the time she held out Ahmed Hirsi as her husband on her campaign site and elsewhere. We found that Omar had legally married Elmi in 2009 and wondered if he was her brother. Omar remained married to him from 2009 to 2017. Although Omar has three children with Hirsi, Omar never did marry him until last year. When I asked Omar about all this by email in August 2016, she declined to respond in substance and implied that the question reflected bigotry on my part. "There are people who do not want an East African, Muslim woman elected to office and who will follow Donald Trump’s playbook to prevent it," her campaign told me through a criminal lawyer. "Ilhan Omar’s campaign sees your superfluous contentions as one more in a series of attempts to discredit her candidacy." As the story blew up in the local media, Omar treated it as a public relations crisis. She brought in Democratic operative Ben Goldfarb to do the talking on her behalf. The campaign issued a statement that went back to the royal flush of bigotry accusations, decrying the "Trump-style misogyny, racism, anti-immigration rhetoric and Islamophobic division" allegedly motivating questions about her marital status. Omar herself refused then and since to answer questions about her marital history or even who Elmi is if not her brother. ... When Omar refuses to talk, it’s unlike her. Her silence reflects an insoluble problem. This week she's not talking. She's not talking about the unlawful joint tax returns she filed with Hirsi...while married to Elmi. ... Omar and Hirsi never split. Omar's marriage to Elmi was a sham. The illegal Omar/Hirsi joint tax returns reopen a story that Omar has to keep closed. This seems to me highly likely to have something to do with the cat that has reappeared to hold Omar's tongue again this week.

That is what I suspect based on the first couple of excerpts. To get a permanent green card by marriage, you had to stay married to your spouse for at least 2 years. (It maybe more like 3 now.) She was married to Elmi from 2009-2011. Even if he's not her brother, it seems to me it was a sham green card marriage.
I wonder if any of can check to see if Elmi got a big infusion of cash around 2009. (Probably not.) I hear green card marriages go for around 10 grand.

My wife ran into a young kid, like 5-ish, and mom at the pool of the apartment where she lived before we were married.
The kid kept referring to the same guy at the pool as grandpa and as dad.
Turns out that was in fact the case.
I know that you have to be screwed up to be in a situation like that, but do you have to also teach your kid that his dad is actually his grandfather to the extent that he uses both names in public as a toddler?

No.
Minnesota law prohibits marriage to a sibling, and that includes half-brothers, and also adopted brothers.
But the allegations against her are that she committed tax fraud, which she did by filing tax returns as "married" with a man who was not her husband. The other allegation is that she committed immigration fraud, by "marrying" (albeit illegally) a man who is her brother. And she has never offered any reasonable defense to either of those allegations. All she has done instead is scream "islamophobe!" at anybody who questions her.

I have zero problems with Indian arranged marriages. I know several Indians who met their spouses a couple of weeks before the wedding and they are quite happy together. I suspect it's at least partly because they don't have unrealistic romantic expectations and are satisfied to play the husband/wife role.

But if you feel *you* are threatened before anybody is actually threatening you, then you've made yourself into a special condition snowflake. There isn't an argument, really. There's a situation. Do you want to piss someone off who is obviously pissed off, and probably has their reason, or not? Do you like them? Are they worth hearing from? If you think the reactions are inappropriate, confrontation is often the worst way to figure stuff out.
