Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Oh Yes: Boris Johnson Threatens to Withhold $50 Billion Payment that the UK Supposedly Owes the EU Unless the EU Plays Ball on BrexitSargon of Akkad has long argued that the UK, far from being helpless in the Brexit negotiations, had the high cards -- they supposedly owe the EU $50 billion for whatever reason, and they could just tell the EU they're cancelling the debt, unless the EU starts acting more reasonably. Theresa May refused to even discuss this. Johnson just threatened it. With Trumpian vigor.Boris Johnson, the leading candidate to succeed Theresa May as Britain’s next prime minister, said he would withhold a previously agreed 39 billion pound ($50 billion) Brexit payment until the European Union gives Britain better exit terms. ... "I always thought it was extraordinary that we should agree to write that entire cheque before having a final deal. In getting a good deal, money is a great solvent and a great lubricant," Johnson told the Sunday Times.Make the UK Great Again! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Another example of how the Conservative Party (Tories) and Farage's new Brexit party are wrecking each other, at the moment - there was a recent by-election for a parliamentary seat in a conservative area. Final results - Farage's Brexit Party (iirc) got 30%, the Conservative Party got 21%, and the far left Labor Candidate won the election with only 31% of the vote.
That area has a 51% conservative voting majority, but they've got a far left Member of Parliament for the next 3 years now. And nothing they can do about it. Posted by: Tom Servo ___________ There's a very easy way to fix this, for Tories to simply go with the MAJORITY of the whole country and a majority of conservatives and break away from the EU. Theresa May threw everything away all to try and scuttle Brexit. It just blows my mind, reminds me of Republicans and open borders. Willing to split the party up all for some Koch Bros money. ArthurK's sidebar commentary on Chernobyl misses a few things. Yes, three men were sent to drain the water. It was expected to be a suicide mission, but they miscalculated how much the water would absorb /block. 2 of the 3 are still alive.
As for the hospital procedures, that holds true if the hospital staff know how to handle a nuclear crisis. Apparently in Chernobyl, the victims were not properly decontaminated, due to a lack of training, so did still have radioactive particles in their skin. The Conservative Party is not very conservative by modern US standards. 288 ArthurK's sidebar commentary on Chernobyl misses a few things. Yes, three men were sent to drain the water. It was expected to be a suicide mission, but they miscalculated how much the water would absorb /block. 2 of the 3 are still alive.
And the third died years later from something likely unrelated. Chernobyl was a 'docudrama', it was not history. I mean, 'Apollo 13' was a docudrama, but it was closer to fact than Chernobyl. Chernobyl gets across some of the gist, but the core points: a) It was a poorly-contained reactor design b) The shutdown-power testing they were performing was run by the wrong people at the wrong time c) The first response of the Soviet bureaucracy was "How can we hide this from everyone?" The Soviets fucked up routinely, and sometimes it was hard to tell what we tried to do, what we might have succeeded in doing (the CIA gas-pipeline-software thing), and what they did on their own. But unless we planted a half-dozen guys prepared to die by feigning incompetence (not imponderable, Al-Qaeda did it) and who are now in lead coffins, it's hard to see how we did this one. And given the era, and how Atomkraft-Nein-Danke our European "allies" were (it's not like they Islamkraft-Nein-Danke these days) it would have been self-defeating for us to have a hand in it.
