The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"A man who picks a cat up by the tail learns something which he can learn in no other way." - Mark Twain
H/T Hrothgar

Quote II

“Wait a second, Mr. Dean has made a cottage industry out of accusing presidents of acting like Richard Nixon. I would like to know how much money he makes based on making these accusations and exploiting them for his own economic benefit.” Rep. Mat Gaetz (R-FL)

Quote III

“These are baseless lies meant to stoke fear in their viewers. It has no place in our public discourse, and anyone amplifying it bears some responsibility for giving it legitimacy it most certainly does not deserve.” TJ Ducklo

Movin' on. Stag Arms has had enough of the State of Connecticut.

After more than 15 years in New Britain Connecticut, AR maker Stag Arms said they are pulling stumps for somewhere with “significant support for the firearms industry.”

The announcement, posted last Friday, said the move is part of the company’s “strategic initiative to significantly improve the overall customer experience.” While the new location has not been selected, Stag says their Board of Directors has “narrowed down the options to a short list of vibrant communities where there is significant support for the firearms industry.”

Why any gun manufacturer based along the eastern seaboard stays is beyond me.

Imagination, curiosity and exploration seem to be things of the past.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Data from US Census Bureau Current Population Survey (CPS). Mover rate measures share of U.S. residents age 1 and older whose place of residence in March was different from their place of residence one year earlier.

A wide range of explanations have been offered to account for these substantial declines in mobility. Many consider the culprit to be the economic crisis, which locked people into declining-value homes; others attribute it to the huge differential in the housing prices in expensive cities. Some economists contend that job opportunities have become similar across places, meaning people are less likely to move for work; others see rising student debt as a key factor that has kept young Americans in their parents’ basements.

Now, a new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York suggests that other, more emotional and psychological factors may be at work. The study uses data from the bank’s Survey of Consumer Expectations to examine the degree to which people’s attachment to their communities affects their willingness and ability to move. To get at this, they use data from the survey (which covers a monthly panel of 1,300 respondents and is nationally representative) to group Americans into the three mobility classes I identified in my book Who’s Your City: “the mobile” who have the means, education, and capability to move to spaces of opportunity; “the stuck” who lack the resources to relocate; and “the rooted” who have the resources to move, but prefer to stay where they are.

The Baby Boomers have not raised their sons well. Millennial dads have pathetic DIY skills compared to baby boomers'

Are dads’ essential DIY skills in decline? According to new research, millennial dads are less capable than their own dads when it comes to everyday DIY fixes, preferring to rely on professional help instead.

A new poll of 1,000 millennial dads and 1,000 baby boomer dads found that when a DIY task needs to be done at home, more than half of millennials prefer to call a professional.

And when it comes to emergency “handiness” scenarios, millennial dads fall short in almost every category.

The ONT normally doesn't cover entertainment news perse... But, if true this could be entertaining on Basic Cable. Justin Bieber vs. Tom Cruse?

Historically, Justin Bieber hasn’t been one to involve himself in too many public feuds. He’s had a few so far this year, though. He had some fake beef with Shawn Mendes, but more real spats with Eminem and a TV host. Oh, and right at the end of 2018, he told Jojo Siwa to burn her car. Now he is adding to that list, as he apparently wants to duke it out with Tom Cruise for unknown reasons.

Last night, he tweeted that he wanted to challenge the actor in a mixed martial arts fight, and asked if UFC president Dana White would host the event, writing, “I wanna challenge Tom Cruise to fight in the octagon. Tom if you dont take this fight your scared and you will never live it down. Who is willing to put on the fight? @danawhite ?”

How to become a morning person.

First things first: Getting up early is not a prerequisite for success. Even though The Wall Street Journal says that 4 a.m. may be the most productive time of the day, the most successful people wake up and start work whenever the (heck) they decide is the best time for them.

That's because the only thing that truly matters is what you accomplish while you work. What time you start, and what time you finish is unimportant. What matters is what you achieve.

But still: Even if you're a committed night owl who loves to wake later in the day and work late into the evening, you may not have that luxury. Maybe you have clients in other time zones. Maybe you run a business that requires you start your day early.

The ONT appreciates you folks, stay up as late as you want.

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day: 11 Jun 2002
Sir Paul McCartney married Heather Mills at St Salvator Church, Ireland. Guests included Ringo Starr, David Gilmour, Jools Holland and Chrissie Hynde. Heather walked down the aisle clutching a bouquet of 11 'McCartney' roses. Mills had first met McCartney at the Pride of Britain Awards event in London in April 1999, which McCartney had attended to present an award to an animal rights activist. Mills and McCartney separated on 17 May 2006 and when divorced Mills was eventually awarded a lump sum of £16.5m, together with assets of £7.8m.sd via thisdayinmusic.com

Old Hop-A-Long came out of that marriage pretty damn good.

Born on this day: 11 Jun 1949
Frank Beard, American drummer with ZZ Top, who had the 1984 US No.8 & 1985 UK No.16 single 'Legs'. Beard is notable as being the only musician in the band without a long beard, an ironic fact considering his last name. The band has had global album sales in excess of 50 million as of 2014. via thisdayinmusic.com

Blazing Saddles was a movie, not a How-To-Guide. Genius Award Winner.

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - A man was arrested in the early morning hours Saturday after Austin police say he struck two police horses and two mounted officers after an officer told him to stop peeing in public.

Luis Rios Flores, 20, was arrested June 8 and charged with interference with police service animal, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to an arrest affidavit, an officer responded on foot to the 500 block of Neches Street around 2:09 a.m. to an officer urgently requesting back up. When he arrived on scene, he found five APD mounted officers on their horses, two of them detaining Flores by holding him by the arms.

Reliable transportation is an awesome thing to have. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Entrepreneur Mike Than Tun Win, founder of Flymya.com and chief executive of BOD Tech Co, created a non-profit organization called LessWalk which is buying up the bikes and making them suitable for students.

"It's a common sight to see lines and lines of students walking long distances from home to school in rural villages," Than told Tech Crunch. "Some students can walk up to one hour from home to school and the families can hardly afford a simple form of transport like bicycle or motorcycle… a school bus is almost unheard of to the students in rural villages."

It was Alabama's abortion measure, the strictest in the nation, that sparked the most contentious debate of any legislation this session.

During debates in the Legislature, Rolanda Hollis, a Democratic member of the House of Representatives, read a poem to colleagues called "If My Vagina Was a Gun" that she said illustrated Alabama's consistent protection of Second Amendment rights but not abortion rights.

Bobby Singleton, a Senate Democrat, told his Republican colleagues that they had "aborted" and "raped" Alabama by supporting the legislation, which was approved generally along party lines.

74 Most DIY skills were cultivated simply from the fact that people couldn't afford to hire it out.

My car troubleshooting skills for example were honed by the fact that parts are very often unnecessarily replaced. I had little extra money when young, so I learned to make sure a part was bad before buying a new one. It's not unusual for simple faults or defects to mimic major problems either. And learning the basics and some detail helps a lot when you do hire it out. Unscrupulous types are far less likely to try anything sketchy when the customer has a good idea what's what.

I don't have proof but the population today just seems less adventurous. They are less likely to move someplace new for a better opportunity. The stats show it and you also hear it. Someone will explain why they are unhappy where they are but then rattle off why they can't leave. No doubt the reasons are real, but back in the day more people went ahead with the move as there reason for going mean even more.

Look at older teens today that don't get their drivers license and don't want to drive. Look at all the cars with those "be patient, I am a knew driver" stickers. A few decades ago, you would have to be in traction at the hospital to not get your license at 16. And if anyone had one of those stickers on their car, they would have been tarred, feathered, and run out of town.

Youtube has instructional videos for just about anything. I don't have a lift so there are a lot of car repair issues I can't do, but changing a headlight bulb doesn't require a lift, just some instructions on where clips and screws are.

I find it hard to fathom that Generation Juicebox can't figure out how to unclog a toilet...

1. Learn that toilets can't handle EVERYTHING you stuff down there like you try to do in school or restaurant shitters.

2. A plunger can work wonders, so can a bottle of Liquid Plumr. A handheld snake from Home Depot costs less than 10 bucks, a plumber charges much more than that just to show up at your door.

Always did my own tune-ups and oil changes, replaced plug wire and distributor caps (Pro tip: one at a time), generators (yeah, off my lawn), alternators, carbs, heater fans (those are no fun).

I miss being able to do all that stuff. And there's precious little money to pay anyone else to do it anymore. Did find a local handyman to do some plumbing work we've been saving up for two years to get done, tho'. That new sink and disposal is very nice.

I would like to solicit some ideas/advice.

I am single and free as a bird, plus I have a job that I can do from anywhere in the world as long as I have unencumbered internet.

So, I'm thinking of living in a different city for a month (I plan to get a short-term rental), and I would please like to solicit ideas for candidate cities. (Don't have to be in the US.)

Criteria:
- No prohibitive living expenses (so NYC and SF are out)
- Walkable with decent public transportation so I don't have to rent a car for the entire month
- Good culture (theater, orchestra, restaurants, etc.)
- Men of dateable/marriageable age for a 40 year old lady

I'm thinking of doing this next month or maybe late fall. If next month, it can't be a place that's too hot. If fall, it can't be a place that's too cold.

I appreciate your input!

From city records I got on closing I found it only had a few owners with the person who built having it for the majority of the time. I think the original owners and most of the later ones were definitely DIY. There is hardly a straight line or level trim, shelf, cabinet anything. Weird wiring and plumbing everywhere.

On one hand, I wish they had hired professionals for everything that needed done because they were not up to the task. But if everything was perfect it would of been too expensive and we probably would not of been able to buy this house in one of the only good school zones in the area.

159 So, I'm thinking of living in a different city for a month (I plan to get a short-term rental), and I would please like to solicit ideas for candidate cities. (Don't have to be in the US.)

the city of Guanajuato, Mexico.

Outstanding walkable town. Your money will go a very long way. Town has a university and is the seat of government for the state of Guanajuato. You can attend world class symphonies, performance art, see museums and other cultural events for $5-$10.

The drug cartels have not discovered the place. It is a silver mining town that once was the most wealthiest places in the Western hemisphere. There are two surface roads that run in the same direction. All of the other roads are old mining tunnels and are below ground.

The weather is near perfect year round. 70s-80s during the day, upper 50s at night and is at elevation so low humidity.

The things is, everything is stone. the buildings, the walkways, everything. Finding trees or grass is only in the heart of down town.

No flying insects. A place I was staying in had no screens or glass for windows, just open the wooden shutters and enjoy the sounds and smell of the city.

Oh. And very good broadband internet and outstanding food.

172 From the article:
Millennial dads are less likely than their boomer counterparts to be able to change a car tire on the side of the road, unblock a toilet or sink, reset a tripped circuit breaker or even open a stuck pickle jar with their hands.

Of these, the only one that has a somewhat reasonable excuse is changing a tire, mostly because a) the tire iron supplied by the car manufacturer is totally inadequate. You need a cross-bar, which you only find out the first time you try to change a tire; b) the lug nuts are over-torqued/frozen; c) the tire change rate is much lower than shown in _A Christmas Story_.

If you can't do the others, well...

There's a bunch of albums I could say, but I have some rather offbeat tastes in music. I can think of some bands that were seriously underrated like the Dixie Dregs, but they're a musician's band, so that accounts for that. Todd Rundgren is pretty underrated, not sure why. But he's off my listening list since he's a raving leftard who hates PDT and can't stand anyone being free, for some weird reason. Fuck him.

Posted by: BackwardsBoy - #Progressivism=Socialism at June 11, 2019 10:47 PM (HaL55)

180 everyone is different. Lots of very successful white collar/military types enjoy working with their hands and solving problems. When they fix a car or sink, it gives them satisfaction. People that live in the country often have to do these things because so many issues pop up or they don't want to spend the cash. If nothing else, just knowing how to fix a problem will make it less likely you get ripped off by someone you hire.

I see these white collar suburban dwellers who can't fix a damn thing. The guys they hire make a lot of cash, some even live in the same neighborhood because they can charge so much and no one around can do anything. It works for both of them I guess.

It'd be really easy to answer this with something obscure. The late-career Willie Dixon "Jungle Swing" album, or the eponymous album by a short-lived band called Higher Ground.

Why is this really easy with movies ("Fear of a Black Hat"), and not so easy with albums? Part of it is not knowing, always, what other people appreciated, but part of it is that songs ("If you only could" by Donna The Buffalo) stand out often, albums less often.

OK, enough disclaimers. Mine is: Quah, by Jorma Kaukonen. Pretend the last three songs on it do not exist. Love the album and have listened to it over and over, always stopping at the right point. Everything else I thought of seemed to have a lot of other fans.

Get into the "near downtown" areas of Houston, in nearly any direction. Mid-Town, EaDo (East Downtown), etc.

Downtown Houston has a great underground and tunnel network. Also, some of those "tunnels" are up at the 3rd story level between buildings. You can roam a great deal of downtown, and not have to venture out into the weather.

As much as I *despise* crap like "light rail", Houston's system is sufficiently developed in and around the downtown area, as to be useful.

Timing wise, do Houston in October, and be sure to set a certain weekend aside to attend the TxMoMeet.

There's no shortage of Houston area Morons n' 'Ettes around here. Tap one of us on the shoulder, and any of us would be honored to drive you to the TxMoMeet.

And don't rent a car. Use LYFT. Uber is much the same, but with corporate data breaches, disgruntled employees and other wee problems to sweeten your ride.

For what it's worth, October is a usually a FANTASTIC month of nice weather in the Houston area.

And you're in the 100% best prime area for up and coming, motivated, driven and successful young men in the entire nation.

Oil bidness is good bidness and good FOR bidness, if you catch my drift?

Lotta suit n' tie guys work in the oil bidness downtown, too.

Also. Houston is the most "diverse" large city in the nation. Nowhere else is even close. Most heavily restauranted, too. Even more than NYC, per capita.

And it's not Soy Central....your odds of finding the right kind of guy will be MUCH BETTER here, than about anywhere that fits your criteria.

Symphonies, museums, arts, performance venues EVERY where, never a lack of something to go do or see.

I prefer living 40 miles away, down here in Galveston. But I'm in Houston damn near every day, and it's a good place.

Imagine the 4th largest city in the U.S., and it yet holds the feel of a "big small town".

The community here is real. And the turnout for self-support in Hurricane Harvey was the perfect illustration to prove it.

Come, spend a season here.

You won't regret it.

Lansing MI. Ask around, a couple non-native Morons and 'ettes were just here Saturday, so they can give you a more objective assessment.

It's got a very good bus system for a city its size, is adjacent to one of the least Bolshevik universities in the Big Ten, an airport with regular flights all over (I caught a nonstop to the NoVAMoMe and back with no trouble, and could have any day of the week), and is an hour's drive from Detroit and Grand Rapids. Cost of living is trivial. Housing, at all levels, is very affordable and plentiful. The Broad Art Museum at MSU is OK, but the DIA, an hour away in Detroit, is world-class. My neighborhood has gigabit fiber for $50/month.

We have really awful potholes, though. Our roads are terrible. I can't deny that part.

217 114 So, I'm thinking of living in a different city for a month (I plan to get a short-term rental), and I would please like to solicit ideas for candidate cities.

Posted by: chique d'afrique at June 11, 2019 10:34 PM (9hauA)

Not Portland. Those are not men. Seattle might actually do, in July. The weather would be good. It is breaking down, but maybe not broken yet. Stay in Belltown or a bit north of Pioneer Square or inland a few blocks from there, for good walkability.

Personally, I'd be very tempted by New Orleans, being highly impressed with their food, but I have not had enough exposure to know it so well.

233 Oooh, sounds intriguing. Would I need to know Spanish? The only words I know are gracias and a couple others.

It would be helpful. There are quite a number of ex-pats who live down there. One Canadian guy I know runs a restaurant and bar down there. Oh my, the food and drink there is some of the best for the buck.

There are troubadours groups who in costume will draw crowds following them along the sidewalks and alleys singing traditional Mexican songs (sort of like a piano bar only with guitars and other stringed instruments and moving). I was staying in a place a couple blocks from downtown and would hear them singing with the crowds until late at night, then around 3AM the roosters around town will kick in. The church bells ring every quarter hour all night - but after a few days you will be able to sleep through all of it.

If invited to go back, I would not hesitate for even one moment.

I was there for a week staying at a friend's home, went to a true cantina (where the urinals are built in to the bar so one doesn't have to lose their seat when its time....) only know some Spanish but there were people there who wanted to be my best friend and we could figure out how to communicate.

For street food, (awesome street tacos) you don't need any Spanish. I was able to get coffee easily, the banks managed to convert currency, the ticket offices didn't care what language I could speak, dittos with every store I went to.

277 I'll tell you how "DIY" works now. I know a young EE, who got a Sears garage vac with a lot of other tools as a gift. He used it a lot for a while, and it quit working. Brush in the motor, of course, and the housing and motor were not designed to be opened. But he is an engineer, and had already worked out some ways around those little screws that aren't supposed to come back out, and the plastic tabs that are meant to snap off. So he opened it up.

Motor is a sealed unit. He used some odd on-line sources to find the purchasing guy at Sears, and nicely shamed him into a contact with the motor company. That guy got a little longer, officer-grade talk about "how we can make this happen" and the real meaning of customer service. The brushes, of course, are worth about a nickel, but are available only by the thousand, from the manufacturer in China. He was up for that.

So he calls the plant in China, and speak Chinese with the manager there. The guy is genuinely bothered that somebody over here is acting like his product is cheap and low-class -- he had not heard this before! -- and so to prove the point, sent an envelope full, probably a lifetime supply, gratis.

After that it only took about 10 minutes to put the brushes in and close up the housing. All good now. This is what a "millennial" has to be able to handle for a simple DIY job. What manly-man men here are up to it?

I thought the Mandarin was a damn nice touch.

281 - Walkable with decent public transportation so I don't have to rent a car for the entire month

One last Chamber of Commerce advertisement for Guanajuato.

When I say it is a walkable town - I mean, there are no garages and very few cars. Everyone walks everywhere. The only time I took a taxi was to get to where we parked the car we used to get from TX to MX.

Literally across the alley was a Baptist Church, 30 feet down hill from the front door was a convenience store. within another 100-200 feet are dozens of restaurants and small shops. 500 - 1000 feet I can get some coffee far better than any Starbucks, plus the bank and the majority of anything I would need. 1500-2000 feet I'm at a museum another 300 feet I'm at one or more concert halls.

Walk up a quarter mile through the tunnel and end up in a MX version of a shopping mall with a huge grocery store anchor.

You will NOT need a car except when its time to leave.

This town is very colonial in its architecture - its required by law to remain that way. Each building is several hundred years old and the floor plans reflect the myriad of changes over the centuries.

Posted by: Can't resist temptation at June 11, 2019 11:06 PM (2DOZq)

Its a matter of positive outlook and being open to the good around you, and shrugging off the bad.

Areas I hate in and around Houston? Sure. The whole I-10 West corridor, out through Katy and it's endless Stepford Wives suburbs, and beyond.

Ditto for Sugarland it it's "oh so twee" brick faced strip centers, full of the same damn franchise stores as anywhere, but forced to comply with that Master Planned Architecture.

All while Highway 6 remains a life-long traffic jam through the heart of the area.

But you get up into the neighborhoods like The Heights, Highlands, or all the warehouses refurbed into Condos in East Downtown, and it's a high standard of living, all around.

Even Montrose, but I have no interest in living in the beating liberal heart of urban Houston.

Yeah, Houston has big city problems. Every big city does.

But Houston does Big City 'bout better than any other Big City out there, and I've been in damn near all of them in the USA.

We've got it good in the Houston area. Make the most of it, see the good in it, make the best of it.

Which ain't bad advice for living in Podunk, Podunkia, either.

335 The DIY thing is a combination of factors.

1) More divorced parents and parents who simply paid someone else to do the work meant fewer opportunities to learn by observing

2) Marrying later/living in expensive cities means more often living in apartments. You have fewer opportunities for DIY repairs. Also, the lack of a garage or workspace.

3) Things are either designed to be obsolete by the time that they break, or they're so cheap and cheaply made that it's often easier and just as inexpensive to buy a replacement.

4) DIY in the good old days wasn't always that great. A lot of repairs were shit. Tear up an old house and you can find some weird stuff that was done by inexperienced homeowners.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't know how to do the basics, such as unclog a toilet, perform basic car maintenance, fix a light fixture, etc.

That is very, very nice, and sounds as though it would reward repeat listening as you found more and more of the groove. I have not heard it before, except perhaps live, when I did not know what I was listening to. I've focused more on acoustic Jorma/Tuna. I suppose my equivalent, the song I could listen to every morning for years, would be Genesis.

381 Its the lack of zoning.

I grew up in a medium-sized city in California.

People ran for city council basically to get on the Zoning Committee (which was the entire city council).

Once on the city council, you could wave the Magic Zoning Wand for your family, friends, and contributors, and double the value of a piece of property via a zoning reclassification. (Of course, you had to vote "yes" for all the other rezoning proposals proposed by other city council members.)

This encouraged a certain cynicism about government early in my life.

397 One problem I have with DIY is that most projects are ones I have zero experience with. I would rather know what I am doing.

On the other hand, it's fun to succeed, and usually the worst thing that could happen is I might have to call a pro after all.

I've played the commercial real-estate game. Yes, you can get variances but it takes juice to get meaningful changes.

The biggest scam is the "endangered species" designation which locks up property until the original owner of the worthless property relents and sells to a patient but "connected" developer who will immediately get that designation removed and make millions in the arbitrage.

I suspect these people don't want to move because their social circle is filling emotional needs they would have satisfied with a spouse and/or parents in earlier generations.

If you move away from family they will still be your family and there's always the holiday season to remind you there's nothing like face-to-face interaction. But your friends will start to drift away, and people without a stable family situation don't want that.

When I lived in Santa Barbara someone who didn't want a certain parcel of land developed planted an endangered plant he or she'd dug up somewhere else. Even though the dirt was still loose the all development of that parcel was halted immediately. 412 Youtube has instructional videos for just about anything.

Posted by: kbdabear at June 11, 2019 10:29 PM (0Ntuf)

I did a metric fuckton of car repairs without the use of a lift. I have one now, and like it very much, but it's a convenience, not an absolute necessity.

Change a transmission? Get the vehicle up on good sturdy jack stands, and lie on your back on a creeper or a sheet of cardboard, and do the unbolting.

Before lifts were commonplace, service shops had pits. A big trench in the concrete floor, with a set of stairs going down at one or both ends. Ledge along the sides, so you could board it over with 3X8 planks when not in use. Much quicker to use than a hoist, and the vehicle cannot fall on you, unless you parked it wildly off-center over the pit. Drawbacks? It presents a falling hazard for unwary persons, and gasoline fumes can collect in the pit, and become an explosive mixture.

429 ...someone who didn't want a certain parcel of land developed...

I live in limestone country so caves are EVERYWHERE.

Unfortunately, if a cave is accidentally discovered while digging, the whole process must be shutdown and professional spelunkers are dispatched to investigate the network of caves connected to that one breech.

Guys who build swimming pools occasionally hit caves, quietly and secretly cover up the breech and convince the pool owner that they really don't want a deep-end in their pool.

The city was extending a water pipe from lake Travis that would go under McNeil road on the north side of Austin. They hit a cave. This caused months of delay while spelunkers did their thing. Then there was an even larger delay as the auger they were using to bore out the limestone for the pipe wasn't large enough to drill the larger hole required to put in casing for the water pipe - and they had to wait for a backlogged auger of the correct size was available.

Of course the road stayed torn up through this entire debacle.

433 I'm trying to master car painting. It's one of the most challenging things I have ever done. There have been failures, but I am learning.
Posted by: freaked at June 11, 2019 10:34 PM (UdKB7)

I have painted a few cars with varying results, from really, really bad, to "looks good at 25 feet". The key to a good paint job is the prep work. Laying the paint on with a spray gun is the easiest part, as long as you don't overdo it, and cause a run.

You can get a pretty damned fine paint job at Maaco or Earl Scheib's if you do you own prep, and remove as much of the trim and door handles as possible, and do you own taping, carefully and painstakingly. That's where they cut the corners. Their painters are usually pretty skilled.

Shortly after my wife's cousin bought her father's dairy farm, the gas company wanted to run a gas line under a field. He asked how much they'd pay (it's common they pay so much a foot), they said nothing, this is where the houses are going, and pulled out a development plan. He said Lol get fucked, no he actually said "not in my lifetime". Now years later, he's getting close to retiring, and has plans to sell the farm to the Amish family that milks for him in emergency situations and his once a year three day vacation. So yes, the utility companies and whoever was planning this development since the early 1980s can LOL get f*cked.

458 I've never painted a car, but once did a repaint on a Honda CX-500 motorcycle.

Rattle cans.

But, I did the prep, the priming, wet sanding, base coat, more wet sanding, clear coat, more wet sanding and followed by three grades of compound going down to a 4000 grit equivalent.

Shone like a new penny, and lasted till it's next owner scratched it all to hell with a 3rd rate tank bag with no real protection for the tank.

Hardest part of it all, was the spray enamel (not laquer) clear coat. (all coats were enamel, btw).

That Krylon Clear Enamel runs faster than a hen-party's tears watching the Hallmark Channel.

It took three coats of clear to have enough built up to final wet-sand and polish down to a shine.

That worked OK for a bike's tank and sidecovers.

I've heard of folks doing a whole car with rattlecans. And I mean good, pro-result grade stuff, not ghetto.

The amount of work involved in that would be simply mind-boggling.

470 The defense against zoning changes are deed restrictions and HOA CCR's.

So, of course, the State of Oregon is moving to usurp those restrictions - it's already decided that HOA's can't ban solar panels, and is currently considering a bill that would allow duplexes and four-plexes to be built anywhere where single-family houses can be built.

You moved into a neighborhood because the HOA CCR's limited development to single-family houses?

Tough - a developer can now build a four-plex on either side of you, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Compressor would run, but no chilling happened. Zilch. So, I tore it to pieces, which was quite a task. Used an air chisel to cut the top and all 4 sides apart, yielding some nice flat sheet metal, once I burned the urethane foam off it. Found out why the R12 had leaked out: they used 1/4" steel line as the condenser and evaporator coils, wrapped around the outer and inner skins, respectively. It had rusted through. Bye, bye, Freon.

I did not pay, and I will not pay.

The brakes were nice, but I didn't need 'em, and the truck only had a couple more years left anyway.

You'd think I was a saint for all the nasty names I didn't call that SOB.

Well, I don't see anyone but I don't doubt that there's some in the sound of my voice.

I have an old fishing buddy who's taken up wildlife photography. There are a lot of similarities between the two in the need for reconnaissance and stealth and the limited sharing of secrets. This guy has zeroed in on some amazing stuff, coyote families, fox families, and particularly various owls.

One of his owl trees was in a stand of trees that all got cut down today. He just put up pictures of cut down trees. They don't look like anything, just wood.

He said Lol get fucked, no he actually said "not in my lifetime". Now years later, he's getting close to retiring, and has plans to sell the farm to the Amish family that milks for him in emergency situations and his once a year three day vacation. Basically, yes. Compute times of transit for various moons to determine longitude (time).

There was a confusing issue with accuracy, until it was understood that the varying Earth-Jupiter distance was a factor. This lead to the first understanding of the speed of light.

They had a darn good chronometer, and the moons of Jupiter would confirm their position and chronometer solutions. It (the clock) had to be wound, was dropped in the water, and essentially abused for a period of years. By occupying one location for winter months they took repeated observations and refined their work.

561 I'll jump in on the album conversations.

Good concept albums:

Alan Parsons Project: Tales of Mystery and Imagination (an album using E.A. Poe's stories as a baseline);

Fairport Convention: John 'Babbacombe' Lee (an album telling the story of John Lee, a real person who was sentenced to be hanged and they tried three times; after the third failure he was given a reprieve because not being able to hang him was an 'Act of God'; also has the 'Sailor's Alphabet' song which put the letters of the alphabet into rhyme);

Spirit: The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (just a good rollicking album);

Albums with no bad song on them:

Humble Pie: Smokin' (one of my personal favorites);

Deep Purple: Machine Head (even though Deep Purple had been around for a few albums, this one put them on the map and there's not one bad cut there);

REO Speedwagon: REO II (another solid, no bad cut, rock and roll album);

Aerosmith: Aerosmith (their first, although 'Get Your Wings' is also very good; their first album had the hit 'Dream On' which only became a hit after the release of their third album, 'Toys In The Attic' a few years later);

Foghat: 'Energized' (a really good album perfect for rollin' down the highway);

Tommy Bolin: 'Teaser' (one of the most underrated albums; a very strong first solo effort from a guy who played in some big bands, The James Gang and Deep Purple, as well as studio work on some good jazz albums by jazz drummers Alphonse Mouzon and the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 'Spectrum' album by Billy Cobham).

590 The Nixon/Nazi cottage industries are just getting older and more tiring.

On the air it takes Progressives about 7 to 15 minutes to call PDT worse than Nixon or call PDT supporter Nazis (when you hear nationalist or national socialist it is just their cute way of saying Nazi). In written form it is usually the 3rd or 4th paragraph. It took Mueller until the 4th para in section to to say that this could not be done as a traditional legal investigation.

I imagine most of them leak a little pee when they hear PDT speak or read the lastest twitface posting. When you see Nadler, or Pelosi, or Biden just keep the happy thought in your head they are sitting in their own piss while pissing and moaning about PDT.

675 They should have shot their wad (not a vulgar term) in 1997.

Why, it's almost like having a well rounded education and passing familiarity of how basic human tools work is a useful and valuable thing in relation to the rest of a person's life.

621 LOL. Nadless nadler is still beating the "meuller will testify to his committee" dead horse. He claims they are in negotiations with meuller and he expects him to testify by the end of summer. and is he doesn't he will subpoena him and compel his testimony.

With his pants pulled up to his midsection, Nadler resembles Humpty Dumpty.

Yes our last POTUS election polls were off
Clinton only won the popular vote by less than 3%
Whereas in 2018 they underestimated by quite a bit how many seats the Dems would pick up in the (peoples) House
Trump's own internal polls do show weakness

681 Many millennial dads reported not owning a cordless drill (46%), a stepladder (49%), a set of screwdrivers (38%) or even a hammer (32 percent)

Dang. I can see why socialism is becoming more popular. These men literally can't take care of themselves.

(Almost half don't own a $10 set of screwdrivers FFS)

OK. I don't own a cordless drill, a step ladder, or a set of screwdrivers. I do own a corded drill and several hand drills, including a couple braces and bits and a Miller's Fall "eggbeater" drill, and a bunch of non-matched screwdrivers, including a couple I made myself from scratch...Don't need or have the room to store a ladder.

So under those rules I'd be just another useless, toolless millennial, despite having a basic blacksmithing setup, a descent set of traditional hand-tools for furniture making, and the tools for carving rifle stocks as well as bowls, spoons, etc. Also spent four and a half years doing tile for a living.

683 "...the person that had took a bull by the tail once had learnt sixty or seventy times as much as a person that hadn't, and said a person that started in to carry a cat home by the tail was getting knowledge that was always going to be useful to him, and warn't ever going to grow dim or doubtful." -- Mark Twain, 'Tom Sawyer Abroad'
