My car troubleshooting skills for example were honed by the fact that parts are very often unnecessarily replaced. I had little extra money when young, so I learned to make sure a part was bad before buying a new one. It's not unusual for simple faults or defects to mimic major problems either. And learning the basics and some detail helps a lot when you do hire it out. Unscrupulous types are far less likely to try anything sketchy when the customer has a good idea what's what.

I don't have proof but the population today just seems less adventurous. They are less likely to move someplace new for a better opportunity. The stats show it and you also hear it. Someone will explain why they are unhappy where they are but then rattle off why they can't leave. No doubt the reasons are real, but back in the day more people went ahead with the move as there reason for going mean even more.
Look at older teens today that don't get their drivers license and don't want to drive. Look at all the cars with those "be patient, I am a knew driver" stickers. A few decades ago, you would have to be in traction at the hospital to not get your license at 16. And if anyone had one of those stickers on their car, they would have been tarred, feathered, and run out of town.

Youtube has instructional videos for just about anything. I don't have a lift so there are a lot of car repair issues I can't do, but changing a headlight bulb doesn't require a lift, just some instructions on where clips and screws are.
I find it hard to fathom that Generation Juicebox can't figure out how to unclog a toilet...
1. Learn that toilets can't handle EVERYTHING you stuff down there like you try to do in school or restaurant shitters.
2. A plunger can work wonders, so can a bottle of Liquid Plumr. A handheld snake from Home Depot costs less than 10 bucks, a plumber charges much more than that just to show up at your door.

I would like to solicit some ideas/advice.
I am single and free as a bird, plus I have a job that I can do from anywhere in the world as long as I have unencumbered internet.
So, I'm thinking of living in a different city for a month (I plan to get a short-term rental), and I would please like to solicit ideas for candidate cities. (Don't have to be in the US.)
Criteria:
- No prohibitive living expenses (so NYC and SF are out)
- Walkable with decent public transportation so I don't have to rent a car for the entire month
- Good culture (theater, orchestra, restaurants, etc.)
- Men of dateable/marriageable age for a 40 year old lady
I'm thinking of doing this next month or maybe late fall. If next month, it can't be a place that's too hot. If fall, it can't be a place that's too cold.
I appreciate your input!

A General handyman who is good can find employment anywhere. I talked to one contractor who was on some kind of network list for odd jobs from everything to apartments and businesses. They would bid on them for stupid money, it sounded like to me. And they would get accepted. Stuff like changing a vent fan or whatever. The only downside it would take quite a while to get paid, they were slow.

It is an art, you need excellent equipment and a painting booth (or equivalent). I found the trick seemed to be mastering the slow steady sweep. I've done a car and an SUV with acceptable results, but there were not show quality!

Outstanding walkable town. Your money will go a very long way. Town has a university and is the seat of government for the state of Guanajuato. You can attend world class symphonies, performance art, see museums and other cultural events for $5-$10.
The drug cartels have not discovered the place. It is a silver mining town that once was the most wealthiest places in the Western hemisphere. There are two surface roads that run in the same direction. All of the other roads are old mining tunnels and are below ground.
The weather is near perfect year round. 70s-80s during the day, upper 50s at night and is at elevation so low humidity.
The things is, everything is stone. the buildings, the walkways, everything. Finding trees or grass is only in the heart of down town.
No flying insects. A place I was staying in had no screens or glass for windows, just open the wooden shutters and enjoy the sounds and smell of the city.
Oh. And very good broadband internet and outstanding food.

Two places come to mind, each with obvious drawbacks. One is the Adirondacks -- Lake Placid should check most of your boxes, nearby Saranac Lake would be considerably cheaper.
My second thought is Tallinn, Estonia. The country prides itself on secure nationwide Internet service. If you go soon, you can enjoy the sun for about 18 hours a day.

Look at Boise. I love the town, yes, it's getting more liberal, but the restaurants and arts scene is lively and new.
Housing is moderately priced. Weather right now is nice. It does get hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. It is a very fit town with miles of bike trails along the river. It's also beautiful.

I can think of some bands that were seriously underrated like the Dixie Dregs, but they're a musician's band, so that accounts for that. Todd Rundgren is pretty underrated, not sure why. But he's off my listening list since he's a raving leftard who hates PDT and can't stand anyone being free, for some weird reason. Fuck him.

It'd be really easy to answer this with something obscure. The late-career Willie Dixon "Jungle Swing" album, or the eponymous album by a short-lived band called Higher Ground.
Why is this really easy with movies ("Fear of a Black Hat"), and not so easy with albums? Part of it is not knowing, always, what other people appreciated, but part of it is that songs ("If you only could" by Donna The Buffalo) stand out often, albums less often.
OK, enough disclaimers. Mine is: Quah, by Jorma Kaukonen. Pretend the last three songs on it do not exist. Love the album and have listened to it over and over, always stopping at the right point. Everything else I thought of seemed to have a lot of other fans.

Get into the "near downtown" areas of Houston, in nearly any direction. Mid-Town, EaDo (East Downtown), etc.
Downtown Houston has a great underground and tunnel network. Also, some of those "tunnels" are up at the 3rd story level between buildings. You can roam a great deal of downtown, and not have to venture out into the weather.
As much as I *despise* crap like "light rail", Houston's system is sufficiently developed in and around the downtown area, as to be useful.
Timing wise, do Houston in October, and be sure to set a certain weekend aside to attend the TxMoMeet.
There's no shortage of Houston area Morons n' 'Ettes around here. Tap one of us on the shoulder, and any of us would be honored to drive you to the TxMoMeet.
And don't rent a car. Use LYFT. Uber is much the same, but with corporate data breaches, disgruntled employees and other wee problems to sweeten your ride.
For what it's worth, October is a usually a FANTASTIC month of nice weather in the Houston area.
And you're in the 100% best prime area for up and coming, motivated, driven and successful young men in the entire nation.

Also. Houston is the most "diverse" large city in the nation. Nowhere else is even close. Most heavily restauranted, too. Even more than NYC, per capita.
And it's not Soy Central....your odds of finding the right kind of guy will be MUCH BETTER here, than about anywhere that fits your criteria.
Symphonies, museums, arts, performance venues EVERY where, never a lack of something to go do or see.
I prefer living 40 miles away, down here in Galveston. But I'm in Houston damn near every day, and it's a good place.
Imagine the 4th largest city in the U.S., and it yet holds the feel of a "big small town".
The community here is real. And the turnout for self-support in Hurricane Harvey was the perfect illustration to prove it.
Come, spend a season here.
You won't regret it.

Housing is moderately priced. Weather right now is nice. It does get hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. It is a very fit town with miles of bike trails along the river. It's also beautiful.

Lansing MI. Ask around, a couple non-native Morons and 'ettes were just here Saturday, so they can give you a more objective assessment.
It's got a very good bus system for a city its size, is adjacent to one of the least Bolshevik universities in the Big Ten, an airport with regular flights all over (I caught a nonstop to the NoVAMoMe and back with no trouble, and could have any day of the week), and is an hour's drive from Detroit and Grand Rapids. Cost of living is trivial. Housing, at all levels, is very affordable and plentiful. The Broad Art Museum at MSU is OK, but the DIA, an hour away in Detroit, is world-class. My neighborhood has gigabit fiber for $50/month.
We have really awful potholes, though. Our roads are terrible. I can't deny that part.

I have a staff arborist I found by chance when he was working at a neighbors property. He has done incredible work and is worth watching. I had never seen a tree taken out from the bottom up before but he's done it for me twice now.

Not Portland. Those are not men. Seattle might actually do, in July. The weather would be good. It is breaking down, but maybe not broken yet. Stay in Belltown or a bit north of Pioneer Square or inland a few blocks from there, for good walkability.
Personally, I'd be very tempted by New Orleans, being highly impressed with their food, but I have not had enough exposure to know it so well.

It would be helpful. There are quite a number of ex-pats who live down there. One Canadian guy I know runs a restaurant and bar down there. Oh my, the food and drink there is some of the best for the buck.
There are troubadours groups who in costume will draw crowds following them along the sidewalks and alleys singing traditional Mexican songs (sort of like a piano bar only with guitars and other stringed instruments and moving). I was staying in a place a couple blocks from downtown and would hear them singing with the crowds until late at night, then around 3AM the roosters around town will kick in. The church bells ring every quarter hour all night - but after a few days you will be able to sleep through all of it.
If invited to go back, I would not hesitate for even one moment.
I was there for a week staying at a friend's home, went to a true cantina (where the urinals are built in to the bar so one doesn't have to lose their seat when its time....) only know some Spanish but there were people there who wanted to be my best friend and we could figure out how to communicate.
For street food, (awesome street tacos) you don't need any Spanish. I was able to get coffee easily, the banks managed to convert currency, the ticket offices didn't care what language I could speak, dittos with every store I went to.

No, I wouldn't count airports either. But don't rule out Detroit either; "Detroit" just means "Everything between Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, and Ann Arbor". There are some very nice communities in the suburbs there and lots of museums and music venues.

I saw them in '77 up in Huntspatch, of all places. Their first ever tour, IIRC. Great show, crappy venue for acoustics. They called it "The Boom-arena" over the PA. This was before the Von Braun Civic Center was built.
I just discovered a new "musician's band" in The Aristocrats (like I just found them last week). Power trio of absolute monster players. They're coming down here in August and I'd like to go see them live.

Motor is a sealed unit. He used some odd on-line sources to find the purchasing guy at Sears, and nicely shamed him into a contact with the motor company. That guy got a little longer, officer-grade talk about "how we can make this happen" and the real meaning of customer service. The brushes, of course, are worth about a nickel, but are available only by the thousand, from the manufacturer in China. He was up for that.
So he calls the plant in China, and speak Chinese with the manager there. The guy is genuinely bothered that somebody over here is acting like his product is cheap and low-class -- he had not heard this before! -- and so to prove the point, sent an envelope full, probably a lifetime supply, gratis.
After that it only took about 10 minutes to put the brushes in and close up the housing. All good now. This is what a "millennial" has to be able to handle for a simple DIY job. What manly-man men here are up to it?

Raises hand, Kinda. I'll buy tools for one-off jobs, but not expensive ones. In this case Harbor Freight is your friend. And their tools can actually be pretty good. Bought a hammer drill to install foundation bolts. $70 on sale. Couldn't rent one for less than that. Actually ended up using it on other projects... Same with a pneumatic floor nailer I bought for $90.

One last Chamber of Commerce advertisement for Guanajuato.
When I say it is a walkable town - I mean, there are no garages and very few cars. Everyone walks everywhere. The only time I took a taxi was to get to where we parked the car we used to get from TX to MX.
Literally across the alley was a Baptist Church, 30 feet down hill from the front door was a convenience store. within another 100-200 feet are dozens of restaurants and small shops. 500 - 1000 feet I can get some coffee far better than any Starbucks, plus the bank and the majority of anything I would need. 1500-2000 feet I'm at a museum another 300 feet I'm at one or more concert halls.
Walk up a quarter mile through the tunnel and end up in a MX version of a shopping mall with a huge grocery store anchor.
You will NOT need a car except when its time to leave.

Another cool small city, sort of under the radar is Bend, OR. Beautiful setting, lots of outdoorsy stuff. I'm guessing lots of outdoorsy dudes around as well, skiers, hikers, rafters, etc. No sales tax in OR.

nice town. Also, what I would do is go for someplace very different than where I lived. Say, if you live in the South or East Coast, try Scottsdale or Tuscon Arizona or another town in that area. Obviously the time of year makes a difference. Don't go there in the Summer, or Houston either.

I just always seem to be missing or not understanding something.

This town is very colonial in its architecture - its required by law to remain that way. Each building is several hundred years old and the floor plans reflect the myriad of changes over the centuries.
One thing for sure, this town is in no way ADA compliant. The hills/alleys/streets are far too steep for wheel chairs, and those on crutches are doomed.

I was in Montreux for a week last year, but that was for work, so my company paid. Absolutely beautiful, but crazy expensive. I also enjoyed getting lost for a day in Geneva (I think I ended up walking almost 10 miles that day), but it was just for the day.
My company also has a few offices in Europe - but maybe I'll do a month in Europe next year.

Not an expensive one but I bought a drill press to install French hinges on cabinet doors that I bought to replace the existing ones in my kitchen. Doors cost me $2500 compared to over 10k for new cabinets. I gave the press to the guy who helped me after the job was done.

Its a matter of positive outlook and being open to the good around you, and shrugging off the bad.
Areas I hate in and around Houston? Sure. The whole I-10 West corridor, out through Katy and it's endless Stepford Wives suburbs, and beyond.
Ditto for Sugarland it it's "oh so twee" brick faced strip centers, full of the same damn franchise stores as anywhere, but forced to comply with that Master Planned Architecture.
All while Highway 6 remains a life-long traffic jam through the heart of the area.
But you get up into the neighborhoods like The Heights, Highlands, or all the warehouses refurbed into Condos in East Downtown, and it's a high standard of living, all around.
Even Montrose, but I have no interest in living in the beating liberal heart of urban Houston.
Yeah, Houston has big city problems. Every big city does.
But Houston does Big City 'bout better than any other Big City out there, and I've been in damn near all of them in the USA.
We've got it good in the Houston area. Make the most of it, see the good in it, make the best of it.
Which ain't bad advice for living in Podunk, Podunkia, either.

1) More divorced parents and parents who simply paid someone else to do the work meant fewer opportunities to learn by observing
2) Marrying later/living in expensive cities means more often living in apartments. You have fewer opportunities for DIY repairs. Also, the lack of a garage or workspace.
3) Things are either designed to be obsolete by the time that they break, or they're so cheap and cheaply made that it's often easier and just as inexpensive to buy a replacement.
4) DIY in the good old days wasn't always that great. A lot of repairs were shit. Tear up an old house and you can find some weird stuff that was done by inexperienced homeowners.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't know how to do the basics, such as unclog a toilet, perform basic car maintenance, fix a light fixture, etc.

I grew up in a medium-sized city in California.
People ran for city council basically to get on the Zoning Committee (which was the entire city council).
Once on the city council, you could wave the Magic Zoning Wand for your family, friends, and contributors, and double the value of a piece of property via a zoning reclassification. (Of course, you had to vote "yes" for all the other rezoning proposals proposed by other city council members.)
This encouraged a certain cynicism about government early in my life.

I've played the commercial real-estate game. Yes, you can get variances but it takes juice to get meaningful changes.
The biggest scam is the "endangered species" designation which locks up property until the original owner of the worthless property relents and sells to a patient but "connected" developer who will immediately get that designation removed and make millions in the arbitrage.

I suspect these people don't want to move because their social circle is filling emotional needs they would have satisfied with a spouse and/or parents in earlier generations.
If you move away from family they will still be your family and there's always the holiday season to remind you there's nothing like face-to-face interaction. But your friends will start to drift away, and people without a stable family situation don't want that.

When I lived in Santa Barbara someone who didn't want a certain parcel of land developed planted an endangered plant he or she'd dug up somewhere else. Even though the dirt was still loose the all development of that parcel was halted immediately. I don't know if there was a patient developer waiting in the wings, but nobody was able to do anything for at least the ten years I was there.

I did a metric fuckton of car repairs without the use of a lift. I have one now, and like it very much, but it's a convenience, not an absolute necessity.
Change a transmission? Get the vehicle up on good sturdy jack stands, and lie on your back on a creeper or a sheet of cardboard, and do the unbolting.
Before lifts were commonplace, service shops had pits. A big trench in the concrete floor, with a set of stairs going down at one or both ends. Ledge along the sides, so you could board it over with 3X8 planks when not in use. Much quicker to use than a hoist, and the vehicle cannot fall on you, unless you parked it wildly off-center over the pit. Drawbacks? It presents a falling hazard for unwary persons, and gasoline fumes can collect in the pit, and become an explosive mixture.

I live in limestone country so caves are EVERYWHERE.
Unfortunately, if a cave is accidentally discovered while digging, the whole process must be shutdown and professional spelunkers are dispatched to investigate the network of caves connected to that one breech.
Guys who build swimming pools occasionally hit caves, quietly and secretly cover up the breech and convince the pool owner that they really don't want a deep-end in their pool.
The city was extending a water pipe from lake Travis that would go under McNeil road on the north side of Austin. They hit a cave. This caused months of delay while spelunkers did their thing. Then there was an even larger delay as the auger they were using to bore out the limestone for the pipe wasn't large enough to drill the larger hole required to put in casing for the water pipe - and they had to wait for a backlogged auger of the correct size was available.
Of course the road stayed torn up through this entire debacle.

I have painted a few cars with varying results, from really, really bad, to "looks good at 25 feet". The key to a good paint job is the prep work. Laying the paint on with a spray gun is the easiest part, as long as you don't overdo it, and cause a run.
You can get a pretty damned fine paint job at Maaco or Earl Scheib's if you do you own prep, and remove as much of the trim and door handles as possible, and do you own taping, carefully and painstakingly. That's where they cut the corners. Their painters are usually pretty skilled.

Shortly after my wife's cousin bought her father's dairy farm, the gas company wanted to run a gas line under a field. He asked how much they'd pay (it's common they pay so much a foot), they said nothing, this is where the houses are going, and pulled out a development plan. He said Lol get fucked, no he actually said "not in my lifetime". Now years later, he's getting close to retiring, and has plans to sell the farm to the Amish family that milks for him in emergency situations and his once a year three day vacation. So yes, the utility companies and whoever was planning this development since the early 1980s can LOL get f*cked.

Hahaha. Vee Monroe (if you know Sh0e you probably know Vee) flushed a bunch of that stuff down his toilet and the downstairs neighbor's bathtub started filling up with raw sewage. He pretended it was all a big mystery.
Of course, he's living in an apartment built when Romania was under communism, so who knows what the plumbing is like.

Rattle cans.
But, I did the prep, the priming, wet sanding, base coat, more wet sanding, clear coat, more wet sanding and followed by three grades of compound going down to a 4000 grit equivalent.
Shone like a new penny, and lasted till it's next owner scratched it all to hell with a 3rd rate tank bag with no real protection for the tank.
Hardest part of it all, was the spray enamel (not laquer) clear coat. (all coats were enamel, btw).
That Krylon Clear Enamel runs faster than a hen-party's tears watching the Hallmark Channel.
It took three coats of clear to have enough built up to final wet-sand and polish down to a shine.
That worked OK for a bike's tank and sidecovers.
I've heard of folks doing a whole car with rattlecans. And I mean good, pro-result grade stuff, not ghetto.
The amount of work involved in that would be simply mind-boggling.

I have repaired my share of shop vacs. Yes, indeed. Talk about an appliance that is not amenable to repair, look no further than a chest freezer. I had one that was dead. Compressor would run, but no chilling happened. Zilch. So, I tore it to pieces, which was quite a task. Used an air chisel to cut the top and all 4 sides apart, yielding some nice flat sheet metal, once I burned the urethane foam off it. Found out why the R12 had leaked out: they used 1/4" steel line as the condenser and evaporator coils, wrapped around the outer and inner skins, respectively. It had rusted through. Bye, bye, Freon.
Got about 2 pounds of copper out of the damned thing, and some sheet steel. And it was a full day's work to get that.

Had one particular asshole try that on me a couple of years ago. Yes, I could have replaced the gas tank on the old truck myself, in the winter, outside, but I'll be damned if I was going to. Naturally, the dude replaced my brakes and then tried to charge me for it. His excuse was that he wanted to be sure I was safe. Because, you know, girl, or something.
I did not pay, and I will not pay.
The brakes were nice, but I didn't need 'em, and the truck only had a couple more years left anyway.

Well, I don't see anyone but I don't doubt that there's some in the sound of my voice.
I have an old fishing buddy who's taken up wildlife photography. There are a lot of similarities between the two in the need for reconnaissance and stealth and the limited sharing of secrets. This guy has zeroed in on some amazing stuff, coyote families, fox families, and particularly various owls.
One of his owl trees was in a stand of trees that all got cut down today. He just put up pictures of cut down trees. They don't look like anything, just wood.

We were visiting friends in their new home in South Carolina for several days when I noticed that their kitchen ceiling light didn't come on.
Quick trip to Lowes +20 minutes with simple tools, and the new ballast was in and running. Total cost was under twenty bucks for the ballast.
Mrs VIA told me yesterday that her office condo repair guy just replaced a ballast in the office.

I've never considered it at all, but a jack-of-all-trades business would probably do really well these days. Heck, a retired old grandpa who showed up in overalls and a beard would probably have to turn work down.
Ceiling fans, doorknobs, food disposals, putting cheap furniture together, and all those other little jobs = big money

RE: Millennials and tools/work. I am happy to report that my youngest girl (ex AD Navy, now reservist) changes her cars oil and wrenches on it. The youngest boy will be a journeyman electrician by this time next year. The oldest boy (just off AD as a Jarhead) will be an electricians apprentice in July. The oldest girl however, probably cannot operate a ratchet so she married up and simply pays to have work done.

The guy was a smart politician. He governed VA as a moderate because the R's ran the legislature. He became popular, won a Senate seat, and gave VA Kaine. He was smart about the whole thing, he knew he could use his fake moderate legacy to get lefties in power. Now the VA Dems win every statewide race, all of them. And now Warner doesn't need to pretend anything.

BUT.......when somebody wants to charge me an outrageous amount to perform a task that I can do myself, and usually too a higher degree of quality..
it just frosts my ass to pay them.
Plus in an emergency, it's good to have those skills in your back pocket.

I did that to 6 fixtures out in the garage (one yet to go). Got rid of the annoying hum. I did, however, manage to slice my thumb open pretty good on the housing. I've found that pretty much all of my projects around the house demand a blood sacrifice.

Like it or not, social media isn't going away any time soon. FB and Twitter need to be held accountable for stifling free speech and their patrons need to be to be subject to libel and slander laws. Alternatively, a punch in the mouth for a few key agitators could solve a few problems too.

Me neither. Just the other day I read about record hiring by Companies, over 5,000,000 people were hired in April in the US and in the very same article they are sounding the death knell for the economy because only 75,000 new jobs were added last month.
It's like these so called experts are trying to make the economy tank on purpose.

they fear a FED rate cut. They want the economy to tank to make sure Trump loses. If we have inflation, the fed can raise rates and slow the economy and stock market down.

Same here. I have no problem using professionals because that $600 timing belt job isn't going to break my budget anymore, and time is luxury.

OK. I don't own a cordless drill, a step ladder, or a set of screwdrivers. I do own a corded drill and several hand drills, including a couple braces and bits and a Miller's Fall "eggbeater" drill, and a bunch of non-matched screwdrivers, including a couple I made myself from scratch...Don't need or have the room to store a ladder.
So under those rules I'd be just another useless, toolless millennial, despite having a basic blacksmithing setup, a descent set of traditional hand-tools for furniture making, and the tools for carving rifle stocks as well as bowls, spoons, etc. Also spent four and a half years doing tile for a living.
